How exactly does this duck duck go thing work?

jrg
it searches the search engines
it doesn't track
it's perl.

ah, interesting.

jrg
it uses !bang stuff for awesome searching.

interesting.

@Seth yeah I wonder if in the future it'd be possible to dual boot Ubuntu Phone OS and Firefox OS on smartphones, it'd be fun to have the freedom you have on the desktop to switch between the two

jrg
he runs off ubuntu, last i checked.

@Oyibo that would be interesting.. I personally don't like Firefox's OS though
@jrg who?

jrg
@Seth duckduckgo.
instead of bsd.

got it.

jrg
9:04 PM
(well, moving from bsd to ubuntu)

@Seth I prefer Ubuntu's obviously for the aesthetics, but as the saying goes: "Don't judge a book by its cover."-So I'm kind of giving the Firefox OS the benefit of the doubt despite not being particularly impressed by what I've seen of it so far :P

jrg
and that was in 2010, i was reading somewhere (@JorgeCastro might have a link) that he was moving to amazon and full ubuntu.

@Oyibo I've read the book ;)
(most of it)

it's all ubuntu

jrg
ok.

9:07 PM
help.duckduckgo.com/customer/portal/articles/… <-- Still says FreeBSD and Ubuntu, btw.

@Seth :o read it metaphorically-referring to having actually tried out Firefox OS? Or are you pulling my leg and just claiming you have? :P
@Seth ah ok I'll give you that, I hadn't really tried it out online to be honest, wasn't expecting to be able to really XD

@Oyibo I have :)

jrg
@Seth is that a full 1080p display?

@Seth by the way are you a web-developer perchance? :P

jrg
9:09 PM
oh, ghostery.

@jrg just the normal laptop display...

jrg
@Seth ok, interesting.

@Oyibo sorta, kinda, yes.

@jrg I'm guessing so by the resolution, on my laptop I have to scroll like mad when the picture is maximised :D

jrg
@Oyibo heh.

9:10 PM
@Seth thought you might be seeing as having Chromium+Firefox+Opera might be slight overkill for most users :P

@Oyibo actually, I think they updated it recently.
@Oyibo oh, yeah :P

@jrg you happen to have an opinion on 1080p laptops? Coincidentally I'm debating whether it's worth the investment on a 15inch one :P

jrg
@Oyibo i know 5 people with them.
They like them.
I personally have a thinkpad which is 2009 vintage, and I intend to upgrade to a ultrabook and a colo server somewhere in about 8-14 months.

@Oyibo wait for the Acer that is rumored to have more than 1080p
what is greater than 1080p
2560 X 1440 (I dont know)

9:14 PM
Retina Display is a brand name used by Apple for liquid crystal displays which they claim have a high enough pixel density that the human eye is unable to notice pixelation at a typical viewing distance. The term is used for several Apple products, including the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and MacBook Pro. As the typical viewing distance would be different depending on each device's usage, the pixels per inch claimed to be of retina quality can be different for the smallest devices (326, iPhone and iPod Touch), greater than the mid-sized devices (264, iPad) and greater than the larger devic...
maybe?

user19161
Hey @seth!

@jrg try 2005 hp pavilion I'm using for vintage ;) but thanks for the information, I think that over 14 inches they're worth it, otherwise on smaller screens may not really be noticeable (however just an opinion, not based on experience other than seeing some around)

@JacobBlack Hello ;)

user19161
@Seth Haha, I have a lovely new username.

@mojo706 I kind of need a new laptop within the next month unfortunately, though that does sound pretty nice!

9:16 PM
Goes well with your avatar @JacobBlack :P

I think Retina is just a buzz word like "facebook"

@Seth I'm a fan of their displays, but I prefer more customisable hardware, and as such they're quite unflexible :(

maybe, maybe not. shrug
@Oyibo agreed.

@mojo706 well DPI-wise retina displays are quite a bit ahead of the game on laptops (not really on tablets), but I agree they could just have called it any other resolution standard, but as with everything apple makes, buzzwords are key to their appeal ;)

on the matter of Firefox OS @Seth and @Oyibo I am actually rooting for both FirefoxOS and UbuntuPhone. Firefox said said Firefox OS will actually be light.
hence there is a possibility to dual boot

jrg
9:20 PM
Define "light".

@mojo706 So far it is. I want to see the real thing though.

jrg
compared to windows 7, unity is light.
compared to vista, anything is light.
5

lol, star

@jrg lighter than UbuntuPhone

Well, we'll see.
Canonical has done a good job of keeping Unity light.

9:21 PM
I actually attended the FirefoxOS Appday in Nairobi

jrg
oh cool!

Nice!

and got a chance to use one of their smartphones. It was cool and I won one

@mojo706 one of those --^?

yes one of the smartphones

9:22 PM
Awesome!

to be delivered by late February I hope
to UbuntuPhone who knows the timeline for the SDK on 12.04

anyone heard of the blog?

@mojo706 congratulations on winning it :) likewise I'd like both to make inroads into the mobile market.

@Seth there are some funny articles on the blog

yeah...

9:26 PM
@Seth didn't know the blog, funny though :D

@Oyibo thanks me too

Funny random stuff from SE
My understanding is Sathya started it.

jrg
@mojo706 oh man, that looks like a fun blog.

@mojo706 yeah hehe

9:28 PM
it is

I caught one today...

question is: Is ot wrong to ask that and you are a technician
or the question is wring
@seth what is that?

@mojo706 A question I found XD
@mateo_salta Can I see please?
oh wait. I found it.

@seth that was a troll

9:33 PM
@Seth Want me to submit it?

@FEichinger You can if you want. If I always asked you to submit them you'd get no sleep!
@mateo_salta Nice!

I must not sleep tonight.

oh?

Exam tomorrow and I have to get up around 5 am.
If I do fall asleep, I'll definitely be late.
Sooo... no sleep for me.

@FEichinger Raring wallpaper contest: flickr.com/groups/ringtailwallpaper

9:35 PM
where is @mateo_salta's wallpaper I cannot see it?

@FEichinger I see...

@Seth thanks, they only let you submit one.

@Seth Saw it, yeh. Looking forward to the results already.

Do we get to vote are do the powers that be decide?

jrg
9:36 PM
No sleeping @FEichinger.

> After this deadline the judging panel – once again made up of the previous release’s winning artists’ –

@jrg NO SLEEP. MOAR CAFFEINE!

jrg
YEAH

I am having coffee. Is there Dormans coffee where you are?I digress

I prefer homebrew.

9:38 PM

@mateo_salta looks good

Nah, I'm usually the "cheap, but workin" kind of guy.

jrg
that's some coffee.

There are only two kinds of coffee in Kenya. Dormans and MacCoffee

@mojo706 no Dormans on this side of the globe.

9:39 PM
the rest are either crap
or too expensive for the average Human
@Seth which side is that

@mojo706 MacCoffee? Sounds like the dreaded Mcafee.
2

hehehe

@seth what is there?. You know the best coffee is Kenyan coffee
ok to more serious stuff
anyone here use CinePaint?

Roast wise or store wise?

9:43 PM
store wise
or both

Well, there's Starbucks, Seattle's Best Coffee and Tully's to name a few.
but there is also a lot of family owned kind of ones as well.

whops wrong box. comment forever immortalized.

@Seth I'm guessing Starbucks is nicer over where you are than in europe, I find they're not really special over here :(

Please anyone using CinePaint?

9:51 PM
@Oyibo Where is that? (where you are)

Belgium
how about you?

12 mins ago, by Seth
@mojo706 https://maps.google.com/maps?q=seattle+Washington&client=ubuntu&channel=cs&um=1&‌ie=UTF-8&hl=en&sa=N&tab=wl

hah funny I saw Washington and thought East Coast, how wrong I was...XD

Everyone seems to think that when I say Washington...
its like, "Uh, Washington is waaaaaaay bigger than DC"
shrug

Now I need to know where I can check for updated packages for example libjpeg

9:56 PM
That's because pretty much everywhere outside of the US, DC is primarily called Washington ...

I mean latest update

@FEichinger Guess you'd know XD

I know pretty much noone from outside the US who calls DC, well, DC.

@Seth I've unforunately never had the opportunity to go to the west coast really, so I'm not that aware, apologies :P

Back in school, it took half of my class two years to realize "Oh, there's also a state called Washington!"
After it was first mentioned. In class.

9:58 PM
@Oyibo you don't need to apologize. There's nothing to apologize about ;)

I've always heard of it as Washington DC. Though admittedly there were many americans in the international schools I went to back in the days :P

Those were the same people who knew the southern states as "California, Texas, Miami", for that matter. Yes, Miami.

hehe Miami.

@FEichinger lol 8D

Q: banner: x2665 Your Job

Glock's BulletAbout this banner: &x2665; on a black background will render nothing. (black heart on black background) Wouldn't it be 'nicer' to be replaced with &x2661; (white heart) ?

Really?

10:01 PM
lol
@JoshCaswell: a-ha! hidden for the eye, but not from machine... black-hat SEO :P — Glock's Bullet 2 days ago

lol

@Seth well if it reassures you, I'm sure many people think Belgium is a state/district of France XD also I see what you mean about Firefox OS, if its light it'll make inroads, otherwise I think it doesn't bring as much new features as I'd expect, ressembles Android in some aspects
ie. not a game-changer at first glance, but time will tell, I'm sure many users will prefer it to android speed-wise

Q: How do I flag a question with two different questions in it?

DaimyoKirbyI found this question posted by a new user who is having some issues with his new Ubuntu 12.10 installation. He asked two different questions in it, one about no wireless with his Broadcom 4313 (which is a common question on AU), and he can't boot into Ubuntu, only his Windows 7 installation. Ho...

Q: A way to mark an edit as a "minor edit" so it doesn't bump the question

neon_overloadI very frequently go back to my own old answers and re-edit them, but they are mostly only minor edits: Fix typos Improve formatting Change wording if it's misleading Make them more up to date Often I'll do this many, many times if an answer is popular and has existed for quite some time. Ho...

@AskUbuntuMeta HUSH, people are talking.

@jrg gone to bed?

jrg
10:06 PM
@mojo706 no.

@Seth I find it much more disappointing that the post assumes just because the character is called BLACK, it's actually black ... Yes, the edits were all on purpose! :P

@jrg suspiciously silent

@Oyibo Time will tell indeed.

jrg
@mojo706 no, just busy.

@FEichinger Stop editing! lol.

10:07 PM
I recall Android had about 50 apps when it came out

@FEichinger Another one: meta.stackoverflow.com/q/166663/203389
MSO is so funny.

@Seth Why did noone post something like "Wait a sec, I'm writing up an answer right now."

@mojo706 yet it grew so much, reason more to not count out Firefox and Ubuntu ;)

On MSO that'd probably get somewhere around 150 upvotes ....

lol

10:10 PM
@Oyibo true

@Oyibo Yep, I know. I've seen that topic pretty much everywhere.
@Seth We still have those sometimes, I know.

I'm sure @jrg has already seen this, but if you want a good laugh:

Q: Jon Skeet Facts

Bill the LizardI'm looking for Chuck Norris Facts style answers. In case anyone is curious, this question was inspired by Jon's own comment to this question. EDIT: If you're into cryptography, you may enjoy these facts. Now with official sanction from the powers that be!

> When Jon Skeet is on a diet and doesn't eat fast food, all hard disks change from FAT to NTFS.

> When Jon Skeet points to null, null quakes in fear.

10:14 PM
@seth * for that last post ^ lol

hehe

@mojo706 ★
* is an asterisk, not a star.

close enough.

where is the star? @FEichinger
i am actively searching my keyboard

10 pages of answers on that question XD

10:15 PM
for that

@mojo706 U+2605

@mojo706 ctrl+c ★ XD

> Jon Skeet can encode HD video with his toaster.
Jon Skeet can run Visual Studio on his Mac.
Jon Skeet once traveled faster than the speed of light in a vacuum. Then he sped up a bit.

please consider me I have not understood anything
haha

that --^

10:17 PM
hehehe

I'm a bad web developer I know :(

@mojo706 The star is a unicode character at the position 9733 ( = 2605 in hex). You won't find it on your keyboard, cause that only uses the most common characters. But the character exists. Just like a lot of other characters.
I usually find those fancy characters with a short google search for their name. Cause I know a lot of names of those characters ...

now let me try
U + what now
how do I write

U+2605 <-- it no work ed :(

U + 2605
where is star @Seth

10:20 PM
You'll have to copy them from somewhere. Usually, you'd use the HTML parsed version (★ in a .html/.htm/.php/anyotherhtmlparsedpage page turns into that character), or you'd copy it from GUI tables with ALL THE CHARACTERS.
@Seth Won't work by just copying the entity. you'll need to copy the character itself.

★★★★★★
^copy paste

The entity, when entered into the chat, is parsed into ★ because & is turned into & to prevent funny "end of transmission" characters and the such ending up in the middle of code.

And U+2605 is simply a way to name the character by its position.
Cause "BLACK HEART SUIT" is a bit longer than "U+2665" ;)

I am a noob when it comes to that

10:25 PM
Oh well, it takes a while to get the hang of Unicode char fun.
‮I can also write backwards with them.
3

jrg
Go to the sandbox if you're going to do that.
seriously. I enjoy watching this, but use the sandbox.
2

I'm just telling them how to do it, it's not my fault if they try it out here ... and fail! :(

user19161
Hey @jrg LOL.

@FEichinger OK.

jrg
@FEichinger this is amusing to watch. :D

10:27 PM
Btw^

good grief. lol. funny. I see. shrug

shrug

user19161
@Seth You mean grief.

how to add all those

jrg
ok, can some of you guys do me a favor? Visit blog.jamesrgifford.com for me really quick.

10:28 PM
@mojo706 It's a userscript Seth and I wrote a while back.

@JacobBlack eh, yeah.

@jrg there

Sec, grabbing the link.

user19161
@jrg Yeah it just shows up in the stats, this is well known.

jrg
ok, well that was cool, thanks

10:29 PM
So, why did you need that?

@jrg who is Cleveland?

In order to install it, you'll need a Userscript tool. For Firefox, that'd be GreaseMonkey. (which you should have anyways, if you're using the ProForma Comments Script)

blogspot.com has these stats all the while.

Why not use this instead?

jrg
10:29 PM
@mojo706 cleveland is where I live.
its the nearest "big city".

@OctavianDamiean Because ours is awesome. It adds BUTTONS!

@OctavianDamiean Because @FEichinger and I didn't write it!

@jrg oh ok

@FEichinger YAY for cluttered up UI.

Well, Seth started coding it.
He kinda failed.

jrg
10:30 PM
that, was cool. thanks guys.

I fixed it, and ended up turning into the whole beast it's now.
At first it was only a shrug button.
2

You didn't write it that's right but our BAUCE @GeorgeEdison did. He knows his shit. ;)

jrg
most of us have 1280px displays

*yep*
**@GeorgeEdison is cool**

jrg
with our browser windows at 1024x600.

10:32 PM
I'm buying 2560x1440 as soon as I can afford it.

@FEichinger well, I didn't quite fail, it sorta worked.

@jrg Wow ... I'm ... really odd then.
@Seth Heheh.

Q: I saw something in chat I don't understand

AbrahamVanHelpsingWhat are some of the common chat items? I want to understand what people who are more familiar with other chat clients are trying to say to me.

@FEichinger then I add my own buttons?

@mojo706 You can add your own buttons, yes. Just click the "buttons" button.

@FEichinger Yeah, you did that too.

I want the buttons you have

@Seth Doesn't matter anyways. We got it working. =)

10:42 PM
yep :)
good JS practice for me.

or how do I add buttons

@mojo706 click "Buttons"

Click "buttons" -> Click "Create New"

yes I got to that bit

Tick the checkbox if you want it to send-on-click. First input is the name of the button, second is the code for it.
Then click the checkmark button to save or the cross to discard.

10:44 PM

refreshing your cache kills the buttons. Currently the only way to get rid of them.

I made the star one

@Seth Wrong. You can get rid of them by editing them empty and pressing the cross button ... well, sometimes.

oh

These are the button codes I use.

10:46 PM
I cant delete one mistake also I cant edit

Double click on it in the settings.

Q: Changes to "close as duplicate" (part deux)

David FullertonI feel like we got off on the wrong foot. Due to me being an idiot miscommunication, a partial change snuck out early, and even though we announced it we didn't really explain why we made the change. So let me just start over... We've made some changes to Close as Duplicate. First, some back...

11:23 PM
@Seth oooh interesting

yeah :/
As for having multiple unanswered questions that ask the same thing, what's the problem with that? The problem is, we end up with a cluttered mess of a site and our answer rate goes down. I thought the while point of SE was to not be like a forum, with data/answers spread out over the whole site. If we can't somehow close the unanswered duplicates, we end up like a that. Maybe we shouldn't close them as a duplicate, but they should (in most cases) be closed somehow to keep the site clean. — Seth 26 secs ago

@Seth I want to comment, but not sure:
> Possible duplicate: Changes to “close as duplicate”. Please edit your post instead of reposting it.

@gertvdijk Would work better if the target was unanswered. :P

yeah.

@gertvdijk where do you want to add that?

11:33 PM
@Seth to the "part deux"

well, you might. You can always delete it...

I think I just talked myself into using the Metro theme on my website.

Awesome! Metro is great.

jrg
one more question guys, does this work? jamesrgifford.com
it's not loading here.

Stay tuned for a preview in a few minutes.

jrg
11:44 PM

@jrg Works here.

Awesome!

@jrg works on my end.

jrg

it's the dns server. always is.
oh, now its loading. thanks!

I see.

WHOA! THIS THEME IS AWESOME!

which theme?

Cosmo.
(The Metro-like theme for Bootstrap.)

Ah, that.
Yes it is awesome.

11:52 PM
I'm going to tweak it a bit and then see how it looks.

@GeorgeEdison Are you going to use this on your site? Quick Media Solutions?

Nice.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison whoa, that looks good.

I haven't put it on yet :P

jrg
11:57 PM
i was looking at the demo.

Oh, okay.
Yeah, it needs a few tweaks.
