i booted up ubuntu live cd and click on try ubuntu and installed vlc player.Does the installed vlc player will be there if i shutdown and reboot the live usb?

but it looks like there is a "check mark box" on the usb installer tools askubuntu.com/questions/87165/… , or maybe custom like this - help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD/Persistence

Q: Questions about Installing Ubuntu on phones

dobeyThere have been a lot of questions asked recently in the form of How do I install Ubuntu on my $randomphone? I'm not sure Ask Ubuntu is the right forum for the questions. While they fit the general concept of having a direct question, with a presumably direct enough answer, they also seem to be t...

^--- now you can find out when things are ready

Ooh. Looks great so far!

I actually had part of the new site up but it was confusing people since it wasn't ready yet.

@NathanOsman Well it looks great! How close is nitroshare to being stable?

I keep thinking sooner rather than later, but... I'm a bit of a perfectionist :)
That and some architectural changes have slowed things down.

So almost done?

3:48 AM
Well... I'm hoping to have the website done soon.
Not so sure about the app though.
I'm certainly doing the best I can, considering I also work two other part time jobs.

Well I hope it gets done soon :)

Q: Ping IP or URL from different IP with same Ubuntu

rajagenupulahow to ping a IP or URL from different location or IP with same Ubuntu PC . I want access same IP or URL from the same Ubuntu PC but not with same system IP every time . thank you.

Don't know if this has come up community-wise yet, but ... datamation.com/open-source/the-burning-bridges-of-ubuntu.html
@NathanOsman I'm with you on that one. Drained after a day makes you not ready to push hard...then days off are house cleaning and laundry. I have a site about done, but I keep finding minor bugs and other little things.

@hbdgaf saw that yesterday - its clickbait - nothing more the regurgitating old nonsense

Fair enough. It just showed up in my feed.
My response was: Trying to replace something as core as the graphical system is going to be painful. Until they kill server and Xubuntu, I'm still on board. If mir dependency chains break XFCE I'll move to Debian. Plain and simple.

11:31 AM
People worry too much. The change required will be on lightdm - as long as it switches between mir & X correctly all will be ok.

I'm not sure they worry too much. I mean look at the performance spike down between gnome 2 and 3. It's bone-crushing. I know that's what they're trying to fix. I just worry that it won't be done before fracturing all the things.

actually - as far as I can gather - mir/xmir currently works well with XFCE - fixes all tearing issues. That is - assuming you are not in a multimonitor situation

well that's good-ish. at least only something that was half broken is fully broken by the change.

well - they have 11 months to finesse this. Should be time-enough to resolve stuff.

possibly. we'll see.

12:04 PM
@fossfreedom what happens when you get a rejected edit?
@fossfreedom gets the user a message with the reject reason? Because one user keeps posting bad suggested edits..

@Alvar the user doesnt get a notification - they have to look at their profile. What is the user?

Savvy, Thoothukkudi, India
27 6
they should get a message so they know if an edit was bad and the reason for it..
he keeps posting too minor edits ...
like change a "i" to "I", when there's much more that could be done...

ok - let me look

thanks

@Alvar - the system has already taken care of this. No more edits from the user for the next 7 days.

12:13 PM
@fossfreedom okey, thanks. Will this user get a message about this, and why?
beacuse all edits I saw then was too minor

they'll get the message next time they make a suggestion.

Also my meta question, http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/7717/duplicate-question-review-managment

Where can I find people that develop for the Stack exchange network?

The meta will need to be answered by SE devs - they'll be around to answer within a week or so because you've tagged it "bug"
If you are asking about who works for SE - the mug shots are here - stackexchange.com/about/team

mostly wanted to let them know my question exists..

well - no difference now - there was previously when the latter Q title was specifically about upgrading to the 12.04 LTS. @Oli for some reason changed it.

12:22 PM
ok, close them as dupes?
they should probably be merged...

Oli has been pinged ... will have to "answer for his crimes" ;)

haha
damn right!

Afternoon Oli - Alvar was questioning the differences between those two Q's above.

I put a close vote on one since they looked like dupes, at least to me..

Oli
12:33 PM
About my edit, rev 1 of that question is very different from most of the subsequent revisions.... It was originally about 11.10→12.04... Somewhere along the line somebody added in all sorts of acrobatics about multi-release jumping

I seem to remember we used that Q as the site banner at the 12.04 release.

Oli
That's entirely possible

well there is a higher voted question on the same topic
shouldn't this be closed then?

Oli
This (answer of mine) got flagged as not-an-answer. I'm probably a bit biased to deal with it. What's wrong with it?

nothing wrong with it.

Nope, seems as a valid answer

@Oli he's using flag to say that is wrong...
(look at comment)

anyone see anything wrong with this answer askubuntu.com/a/383207/169736?

I have a minor query, I have configured nagios successfully
and Im accessing it by typing localhost/nagios3 in the browser
where it shows localhost and the remote linux server
is this correct way to do it?

Yes
Thats one of my internship assignments. Although we use Icinga.
Its a pain to configure it :(

Ya it took me a while especially the part where I messed up check_nrpe_1arg!check_all_disks!192.168.0.2

WHahah. that takes me back.

1:16 PM
earlier I gave 192.168.0.1 instead of 192.168.0.2

like 2 weeks ago XD

it gave me so much problem it just keep on giving error
I also have its screenshot :P

ieuw
Icinga looks a hell of a lot nicer

could not complete ssl handshake that took me more time than configuring it
I will look into it thanks

@Tarun, This is how mine looks : define service{
use generic-service ; Name of service template to use
host_name SOMETHING
service_description Disk Space
check_command check_all_disks!20%!10%
}

1:24 PM
@blade19899: ya I have this one configured as well took some help from ubuntu documentation, in that the have configured nrpe-disk check
@blade19899: why to configure nrpe if one can use check_all_disks?

@Tarun, thats what i was wondering also. but, my 'boss' wants me to figure stuuf out by myself :(

@blade19899: same here :P
@blade19899: I need to figure it out as well because this thing made me confuse

1:41 PM
@Tarun Its tricky. But, whit some help and Googl-ing it can be done!
@Tarun, Nagios is your main server, then what is your client? Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS?

@blade19899:Ubuntu

? There are also some games available for Ubuntu. They also have the same discount offer! :)

@blade19899: great :)

And this sale is working against itself... I've been saying I'd buy Prison Architect when it got under £10 (as it now is) but I can't justify it when Skyrim is £3.74. That's a lot of game for a few hundred pennies... Even if it does require Wine.

The funny thing is, am gonna play them once or twice, and never again. unless its 0 A.D.

Oli
Super Meat Boy keeps drawing me back. I've owned it for years and still pick it up for 20 minutes of frustration. Hotline Miami is good for that too.
Thomas Was Alone is a good platformer too. Not the highest replayability but it's also only just over a quid.

i Just duckduckgo Super Meat Boy. Looks like a fun game.

Does anybody know how to download a file using wget when the name is something like xmind-linux-3.4.0.201311050558_amd64.deb and you want the command to be the same regardless of what version of 3.4.* this is?
I want to download files with names such as xmind-linux-3.4.*_amd64.deb
But using wildcards in filenames is not really possible it seems when using wget, but I'd like something like this to work because I want to add it to my CompleteUbuntuSetup.sh.

Q: Using wildcards in wget or curl query

mart1nIs it possible to use wildcards in wget queries when downloading from directories? Basically, I have a site, say, www.download.example.com/dir/version/package.rpm. Howevery, the version directory changes all the time and sometimes contains multiple RPM packages. Is there a single wget query that ...

@jokerdino Thanks, I've seen this tip already. but I can't get this to work. I assume it would work with .deb, but I need to download the file which ends on amd64.deb.
Unfortunately, Xmind does not do it click Google Chrome for example where the 64-bit download always has the same file name: https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb
That would make this so much easier...

where are you downloading xmind from?
it might be possible to setup a PPA that automates your work.

2:55 PM

that might be difficult.

It's such a simple requirement, yet so difficult* to accomplish :/

I imagine a bash expert might provide a solution for your case.

That would be awesome. I'll stay logged in here for a while then. Thanks for trying to help out!

you might be able to screenscrape the version number off the page

3:03 PM
The version number is nowhere on the page except in the download links.

precisely

How would I screenscrape the version number? (I'm not sure what you mean by screenscrape)

try wget -O- http://www.xmind.net/download/linux/ | grep amd64 | cut -d \" -f4
you gotta get that into wget, and I can't rememeber how to do that this time of night

Oh nice, we got the link!
That's already 80% of the job :)

hm
does wgetting the link directly work for you?
;p

Oli
3:16 PM
wget $(python -c "from bs4 import BeautifulSoup; import requests as r; print BeautifulSoup(r.get('http://www.xmind.net/download/linux/').content).select('a.btn-success')[0]['href']")

his solution is prettier

@JourneymanGeek Argh. forbidden...

Oli
You'll need a couple of Python libs (beautifulsoup and requests) but that's how I'd do it.

linkxmind=$(wget -O- xmind.net/download/linux | grep amd64 | cut -d \" -f4)
 wget -c $linkxmind
thats how I would do it in bash

Oli
Yeah regexing is good too

3:17 PM
@Oli's answer might work here
its pythonish tho

Oli
What's wrong with yours?

Wow nice, I'll try these now and understand them later, lol!

@Oli: apparently the site gives a 403 forbidden
@gentmatt: mine's simple ;p

Oli
use a -q in the wget to stop it blurting out progress

@Oli's is elegant
he's basically emulating pressing a button ;p

Oli
3:19 PM
wget $(wget -qO- xmind.net/download/linux | grep -Eo '[^"]+amd64[^"]+')

Still 403. :(

Oli
And no, it's just search the page for the URL by CSS rather than anything else.

maybe its checking the referrer page?

@JourneymanGeek Nice, but also halts at the 403 error.

Oli
3:24 PM
It's a silly user-agent check.
wget --referer xmind.net/download/linux --user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070725 Firefox/2.0.0.6" $(wget -qO- xmind.net/download/linux | grep -Eo '[^"]+amd64[^"]+')
I assume they're blocking wget to stop scripted downloads (didn't they do well).

@Oli I installed the two packages, but this doesn't do it for me. ImportError: No module named bs4

Oli
@gentmatt Forget that. That was me playing code golf. Use the one above.

hah
cute ;p

@Oli Oh yeah, this looks like it works.
You are spoofing the user agent as you request the download, right?

@gentmatt: for all its utter ugliness, every system has wget and grep
yup with --user-agent
and a referring page

Oli
3:28 PM
@gentmatt Yeah. You could repeat that on the internal request too, just as you could preserve cookies between the two requests (if they ever implement session-based checking)... But just the user-agent spoof is enough for now.

Well, thanks for the help guys! I really appreciate it :) @Oli @Journeyman @JourneymanGeek

Oli
The --referer was just there because it was the first thing I checked. It's not required AFAIK.

@Oli Yep, just tried it.

Is it true that Ubuntu 14.04 is using GTK3.8 and Gnome 3.8 components,while it should be using atleast 3.10? Gnome 3.8 was in use since Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail and will be one year old,very old by the time 14.04 is released.

check ubuntu package search
@HEXcube I'ld be careful about saying should be using, but it is using 3.8 packages.ubuntu.com is where you start. hotlinking the page result doesn't work
consider that an LTS needs a solid base, so backported security fixes and everything else stable is probably a better idea than trying to get edge in to an lts...

@ThomasW. If they are, the votes will be invalidated automatically. This can take a little while (overnight?) but it does work if they're really hammering you. If you really want to reverse a vote you can edit the post and then change your vote. A bit kludgey but it works.
But don't give into terrorism. If your vote was for a good reason, let it stand. You've only lost 6 rep so far. I wouldn't worry too much.
And now you're +4.

@Oli I might have screwed up a bit...
