Q: Can we reopen the question about restarting the Tor browser?

Eliah KaganThis is a question about how to restart the Tor browser: Restart Tor Browser after closing The OP's motivation for wanting to do so is a bug. This question, however, is not a bug report. The bug is not that the browser won't restart. Answers to this question would help anyone who wants to res...

how do you escape actual backticks in a command you are trying to backtick quote?

idk. i'ld just indent it by 4 and call it a day

Q: How do I escape backticks in a backticks command?

BuZZ-dEEI found: "How do I escape backticks in a comment?", but I want to escape backticks, if I use backticks to format code in an answer. The following doesn't work: `sudo update-initramfs -v -u -k \`uname -r\`` The result is this: sudo update-initramfs -v -u -k \uname -r`` Desired goal, but with...

^-- this what you're looking for?

yes. i think it is.

yea, thanks... can't indent by 4 in a comment

Q: How do I escape backticks in a comment?

ændrükI want to be able to post this as a comment: FYI, code formatting is done with backticks, e.g. `sudo vi /boot/grub/menu.lst`. But as you can see, it doesn't come out quite right...

anyway... BBT. :)

user19161
Hey guys, Matt Damon is here.

:():
it's an indifferent spider staring at you

@gertvdijk That's not a replacement for indenting by four. That's not about making backticks appear inside a code block, it's about making them appear outside a code block.

1:37 AM
@EliahKagan - that comment is def pure epic
the starred one, not the one you just made

@AbrahamVanHelpsing did you see the EVE online buzz?
about the largest battle EVER.
and how they destroyed about 24K USD in online equipment?

no. i don't get to be in gamershpere atm
linkify it plz

@AbrahamVanHelpsing This one? Yes. It is.

meowderated. made me smile even though i shouldn't have.
@jrg we ALL know that reddit always wins...but yeah

Estimated ISK (EVE’s in-game currency) cost in damages are still being calculated, but early totals reach beyond 700 billion for both sides combined.
That’s around $24,000, depending on the value of ISK at any given time,

See, that's why I don't trade in game currency. It can inflate as quickly as US currency.

jrg
yeah

I wanted to be smart and keep Qt 5.0 installed in my home directory... but it looks like I'll have to install it to /usr/local.

you mean you don't have a bajillion chroots on your system?

jrg
i've never been able to get a clean chroot setup jussstttt right.
i know a guy who did lxc containers

oh, @AbrahamVanHelpsing. did my first potentially-a-security-problem disclosure today.
found a way to grant myself infinite karma on a reddit-like site.
feels good man, feels good. ;P

@jrg i'm a no more free bugs kind of guy, but i take your point

jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing true, but it was still fun.

definitely. i want to get in to hardware...badly. i think firmware is a fig leaf that needs to go away.
can't find a good "progression" to get there though. you either got an EE degree for programming ICs and your goal is to write software on a locked platform or you're at the other end. seems to me there should be a progression.

Guys, someone needs help here: askubuntu.com/questions/249255/…

@vasa1 Everyone who asks a question "needs help"
no need to announce that here.
also, chat's usually dead around this hour

@TheLordofTime Announcing a question that you're wondering if anyone can help with is generally fine. (Unless you join chat, drop the link, and then leave right after, of course.)
@vasa1 I'm not sure anyone can help until the OP addresses your comment. The command gcompris should exist if the package is installed.

@EliahKagan, I've never used "make", etc as OP seems to have done. Is it possible that the system isn't "seeing" the program because the apt-get route wasn't taken? As I said, I don't know the technical aspects.

6:17 AM
@vasa1 Oh. Yes. The OP did build from source. Let's see...
I have commented.

@EliahKagan, thanks! Saw that.

WTF. I had a very nice answer posted and now the user removed his Question... answer GONE!?
"This question was voluntarily removed by its author."

its back with a comment

@fossfreedom yeah I see it, thanks.

I think they deleted it because sed isn't the tool they need and they realized it. They wanted to replace lines containing strings, not strings as they occur according to the question.

good hypothesis - lets see what the OP says.

I'm working on a script that automatically configures and installs lamp so I need to uncomment two lines in phpmyadmin conf file to accept nopasswd login via the web interface. — pyn 3 mins ago
@pyn Consider using tools designed specifically for deploying applications instead: Puppet, Juju, Chef, etc. Writing your own scripts to deploy applications is usually reinventing wheels and/or axles. — gertvdijk 2 mins ago

neither do I - but its his call if he wishes to delete this again.

I'm doing this for learning purposes, to get familiar with bash scripting ( CLI ). — pyn 29 secs ago
@fossfreedom but it's rude to delete Questions already answered, right?

rude is rather strong ... its rather rare to do - but not exceptional. Go with the flow.

@jrg clearly I am NOT on your work list yesterday (LOL). Don't worry, just write one before 19th Feb.

@pyn No problem. I had just posted my answer, thought I'd help you quite a lot, then was very disappointed to see you chose to delete your question along with my answer.
Glad you undeleted it :)

Hmm, I didn't clicked that button.I had to edit posts several times ( pretty bad at writing english ) and maybe this is the reason you have seen them deleted.

@pyn Then it's a mystery as to why it appeared deleted. Maybe a moderator mis-clicked the button and @fossfreedom restored this action then. Editing your post is not a reason for it to be deleted.

3:15 PM
What do we do with Bounty question being an exact duplicate?
close as dupe and have the bounty refunded by a mod?

@gertvdijk huh? no the OP deleted that Q.
@gertvdijk yes - we can do that - the OP needs to agreed its a dupe first though.

lets see what the bounty person says.

@Eliah at around 2AM Eastern US, its not really... useful... to post a question for attention in the chat.
@EliahKagan since almost nobody's here.
anyways, good morning.
although not that it really is a good morning... why do we even use that phrase anyways?

Bloody rep cap again :X

3:27 PM
@gertvdijk if you keep bumping into that ... suggest take a long walk and enjoy the fresh air.

@fossfreedom hehe yeah :) I should!

3:38 PM
@fossfreedom this

@TheLordofTime It worked. :) But I agree it is not generally effective.
And good morning!
(And I don't know why we use it... I'd say to ask on English.SE but this might be more of the anthropology side of linguistics... :)

@Rinzwind - Hi buddy

@LuisAlvarado Why are you posting the same answer as I posted in this q? askubuntu.com/q/249427/88802

I actually did not see you posted that until you mentioned it. I left the page open since I was waiting for OP to answer my question

ah okay. OP now accepted yours I see. He may have expected to be able to accept two answers and didn't mean to unaccept mine

AND just so that lol. Then simply add to your answer "Hope it helps buddy". Maybe he will accept yours again hehe

Q: Can we copy externally hosted screenshots into our answers?

FlimmIf you look at this suggested edit, a user has simply copied the screenshots provided in the linked post, and included them in the answer. The answer is better for it, IMO. However, is this a copyright violation? Or is there no reason to worry about copyright, since these screenshots could very ...

@Seth you there? I just tried your solution and I'd need to ask you a few more questions, the way I've tried it, doesn't seem to be working :'(

Yeah, I'm here

@Seth well firstly to be polite: "hello hope you're having a good day and all" :) but otherwise, the file I need to create is .xmodmap right? Not .xmodmap : touch .xmodmap?

@Oyibo Yeah. I was wondering if I needed to clarify that
you use touch .xmodmap to create the file.

@Seth always clarify with me, I'm not that knowledgeable, sorry XD
yeah I guessed that's all it did, I just created it in Nautilus the graphical way

touch creates files, and files with begining . are hidden.
@Oyibo ah, OK. I will try to edit it better

5:46 PM
yeah no worries, although I feel bad for you, your answer is so researched and good, but it just doesn't seem to be working on my hardware :(

Well, I've never used that program before. Let me research it some more. I might have made a typo.

If you want I'll bounty the question once you've updated your answer to give you at least some sort of credit for your dedicated work

I'll look into it a little later. I've gotta run now.

Also sorry about not trying it out for ages, was on holiday until yesterday

no worries :)

Q: Has the old-style notification bar returned for some purposes?

Eliah KaganFor the first time in a very long while, I saw the old-style notification banner! For quite some time, I've seen more discreet notifications of new answers, appearing within the page itself, just above where I compose my answer. This harkens back to many months ago. user127361After a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 my WLAN would not connect. question about tags - I wanted to remove seemingly superfluous tags from this post but realized that they had been added recently by an "editor". I don't want to quarrel but get my bearings - are they necessary in your opinion?

8:58 PM
those tags are terrible
I'll fix it

@JorgeCastro thx, I could have done it myself too, but that might have led to some kind of "edit battle"

at least the tags should be combined

Q is a fictional character who appears in the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, as well as in related products. In all of these programs, he is played by John de Lancie. The name "Q" also applies to all other individuals of the Q Continuum. Q is said to be omnipotent, and is continually evasive regarding his motivations. His home, the Q Continuum, is accessible to the Q and their guests, and the true nature of it is said to be beyond the comprehension of "lesser beings" such as humans so it is only shown to humans in w...
