@GeorgeEdison I configured the bug tracker on Ask Ubuntu Troubleshooter, and added the first bug, hope you don't mind.

Great!

I put like a simple statement about how it's in development, so maybe we wouldn't get a lot of "the recipes don't work" bugs

12:32 AM
Okay.

anything new/exciting @GeorgeEdison

I'm trying to get my website to output XML so that the troubleshooter can parse it.
But outputting an "object" as XML is proving difficult.

hm, interesting. full of html code I suppose

hello world.
how goes it.

@TheLordofTime It goes.

12:47 AM
@GeorgeEdison yeah, I've looked into it recently... pretty hard.

any way to use xml as the content, at first and read it into the site, so you have it in the form you want just have to display it, or something

Q: Display xml data into html page

Ashishi want to get data from xml file and display it into html. Which is the best and easiest method to display xml data in html page ?

not sure...

That does it. I give up. No XML from my API.

It's just too difficult.

+1

12:54 AM
I'd rather have my app parse JSON.

--^ that

I've written a rather primitive JSON parser a while back so we can avoid you-know-what.
(You-know-what is this.)

no don't say it!

It ain't much... but it works.

12:55 AM

WAIT A SECOND!
I don't need a JSON parser at all!
I forgot that I am using QtScript - a full JavaScript interpreter.
I can just have the JavaScript interpreter itself parse the JSON!
Why didn't I think of that sooner!

so just transfer the java, and have the app do all the magic?

cool

ok

1:05 AM
oh, by the way, I put a shell script on the recipe site, can we have an "invalid" status for things not in the same language

Eventually, I'd like to have the website itself attempt to verify that what you've uploaded is valid JavaScript.

oh, that would be good as well

But for now, it's great that you put that there since now we can test the error handling :)

maybe a "recipe builder" That asks for information about what the recipe is, and what command would be ran that can do the basic outline of the JavaScript. Although once a lot are made there will be enough examples to figure out, and the simple ones already done...

jrg
@Flabricorn we still on track for next saturday?

1:18 AM
@GeorgeEdison do you need a armhf build of nitroshare, I compiled a version to use on my raspberry pi, and cubieboard (because of no ppa's in debian, and missing things in ubuntu-ports for linaro)

Not at this point, thanks.
I don't really have any ARM hardware I can use at the moment.

@mateo_salta: isn't a ppa not that different from a regular repo?

kind-of I suppose, ran across this, blog.anantshri.info/howto-add-ppa-in-debian

lol
yup
all that does is add a line to sources.lst ;p

well I think the other problem is that one of them didn't have either qjson or qtxml in the repo...

user19161
1:29 AM
Hi @jrg is that you in the picture?

@JasonBourne it's his face :)

user19161
@mateo_salta I can't be certain...

just not the rest of him...

jrg
it's my face, yes.

well most of it, I added a mustache.

jrg
1:36 AM
well, true.

@JasonBourne You like math?

user19161
@Seth Yes, and I like Seth too.

lol
for i in {1..10} do xdotool click 4; sleep 1; done

That script runs when button 4 is pressed, but the script also calls button 4.

user19161
Don't know any programming.

@jrg Yes, next Saturday, this time we shan't postpone again.

1:49 AM
errg, gotta go for now.

user19161
@Seth Bye, good night!

@JasonBourne I'll explain what I meant as soon as I can.

jrg
@Flabricorn ok. just sent an email, reply back when you get the chance with times.

@jrg Want a google invite with the times?

jrg
@Flabricorn sure

2:04 AM
What's wrong with this JSON???
{"items": [{"code": "#!/bin/bash\r\n#This script says Something\r\nay='echo'\r\n$ay Something", "description": "[no description]", "title": "Say Something", "safety": "unsafe", "user": "mateo_salta", "id": 4, "permissions": []}]}
I'm getting parse errors when I attempt to load it.

Don't blame me for letting sit around for 30+ minutes before :P
@jrg It's crossed my mind...
I don't think I could stand against certain other people that are probably going to run.

jrg
go for it.
just write up a somewhat convincing story about how much time you spend cleaning and you've got your foot in the door.

2:37 AM
whelp, there are certain things that need to be done before I can, but I might.

Your encouragement really helps :)

And that's why you don't use a wiki for important pages.

that looks like spam...

@GeorgeEdison I saw one of those on the Btrfs wiki.

Annoying...

I rolled back the page.

4:23 AM
Good!

The server is very very slow.

I'm off to bed. I have created a backlog in the Regulators room, if anyone has time to pop in, it starts here. Thanks!
oh, please leave a comment if you take care of some.

I am bored.
brb

@Seth You pasted the wrong link.

Ah, you're right @Mechanicalsnail. This is the right link. Sorry about that.

4:37 AM
Is the Ubuntu Software Center account the same as the Launchpad OpenID?

probably.

Yes.
@Mechanicalsnail It is also known as the Ubuntu Single Sign on ID.

Q: How can I switch between different audio output hardware using the shell?

Luigi Massa GalleranoI use my laptop with an external monitor which has speakers. When the monitor is attached through HDMI I can switch (using the GUI: Sound Setting --> Hardware) between the normal laptop audio output and the monitor output. I repeat this procedure a lot of time and I started to wonder if I can a...

10:40 AM
@gert
argh

@iGadget o/

@gertvdijk: I could post my latest experiences with the still-very-much-unstable i915 drivers :)
Or this weird problem I'm now experiencing that my laptop (yes, the ProBook 6550b) cannot access any host when connected to my Wifi-N accesspoint (which happens to be the same one used @ Zarafa) :)
Or do you consider those boring Qs as well? :P

Haha. yeah, well, while they're interesting to do research on, I think this site is not fit for bug-report-like questions or plain issues (problems) which can only be solved by step-by-step "helping hand" solutions. It will become ugly like this one: askubuntu.com/questions/237853/…

@iGadget: ugh. are all the video drivers broken? ;p
is currently trying to get the nvidia driver working
same bug also broke anything that uses DKMS

10:58 AM
@gertvdijk true, but then again - it seems to be the policy to use AskUbuntu for this kind of thing according to Apport, since 12.04 is now considered "stable"...
@JourneymanGeek: yes, it's terrible. ATI still sucks, nVidia has issues and the supposedly-best-option-because-they're-so-open Intel is not that much better either. It makes me a little sad to be honest.

@iGadget: this time it seems to be a ubuntu mistake
If I can get this sorted out I can move to the next problem ;p
its not a biggie. not planning to game on this
its just ugh

Good day to you all!
I have a policy/ethics question ;)
What if a question is perfectly answered by someone on a different SE site
what is the recommended course of action?

@GerhardBurger: quote, cite, link back. paraphrase. Improve ;p

Q: Forum for Ubuntu Phone

TheKojuEffectSince Ubuntu phone gonna hit the market very soon, I was wondering if there's gonna be separate forum for Ubuntu phone or AskUbuntu will do the job?

so you're saying copying with proper attribution to the original author is oke (I know it's ok from a legal point of view per the CC license) but this is not frowned upon here?

11:12 AM
hence paraphrasing and improving ;p
copy pasting is bad.
using that as ONE reference and addint to it is goood

:)
oke fair enough
then what if the answer is already perfect (not trying to be annoying here, just genuinely interested ;) )
because I would say "put it in a comment", but that leaves an unanswered question...

11:25 AM
@iGadget Yup, but it's a Q&A site. Not all issues close to bug reports fit into the format. Most of the times this is way better on a discussion forum or a bug report. Anyway, it's just my thought.

@GerhardBurger: I guess you can just answer your own question, just as I did with askubuntu.com/questions/247010/…

@i
@iGadget no, it's someone else's question

@GerhardBurger If you are feeling lazy, quote the entire text and add a link to the answer in the other site.
If you have enough time, add a link and paraphrase the answer.

Oke thanks, just wondering if this was not frowned upon
:D

Not often.

11:31 AM
@gertvdijk: Well... I kinda hate discussion forums (hard to find the useful posts between all the cruft), I believe AskUbuntu is much better equiped for problem solving / resolution providing. But there should some kind of 'convert this issue into a bug report' feature IMHO

@iGadget regarding Apport recommending Ask Ubuntu, the xorg maintainer fixed that issue. Apport no longer recommends AU for such things. The right venue is to file bug reports for any issue with graphics card or xorg. If you note that Apport is suggesting the user to use AU for any crash instances, please do file a bug report against Apport in Launchpad.net.
Hm, does that make sense?

@GerhardBurger: I think I would prefer copying the answer over to AskUbuntu, just in case the external link is (re)moved at some point

Oke thank you all for your advice!

@jokerdino ok, will do. So do you have any suggestions on how to attract a dev's attention to an issue such as bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/… ?

The best way is to work on a patch and attach to it.

11:38 AM
oh sure :)

If that is not an option, you got to play the waiting game.

I'll just work on improving my Jedi Coding Skills over the next few decades and then by the time of Ubuntu 24.04 I'll have some wonderful patch ready ;)

That would be so kind of you. :)

Oh I know all about the waiting game... became quite the ace in that one over the years :P

The life time of xorg bugs in Ubuntu is not something that is encouraging. That much I can give to you.
I think there is only one xorg developer and that is Bryce.

11:42 AM
Excactly, Bryce was very helpful at the time of 12.04 being in beta

So, the one developer gives higher priority to the release that is currently in development.

But at some point that stopped and I needed to get my system working
...and the LTS again becomes somewhat of a joke
Too many times already these kind of bugs have outlived the life cycle of my hardware
Example - my first HP laptop - bought in 2005, got usable with Ubuntu around 2010
Same with my EEEpc

What can I say. Not enough manpower.

same with my iPod Touch 16GB which I got as a gift (still not working properly)
yeah it's sad

thats apple's fault - not ubuntu or its devs.

11:49 AM
Do anyone have a list of things that Canonical had its hands on?

Maybe I should just buy Ubuntu Advantage Desktop :)
@fossfreedom: sure it is... but no consumer will accept such an answer

if you believe the press - consumers are walking away from apple ... into samsungs welcoming arms

@fossfreedom and that's an improvement you think? I hear a lot of complaints about Samsung when it comes to providing OSS support

apples and oranges ... slap on ubuntu onto a samsung then you'll be happy :)

@fossfreedom heard anything about the upcoming AU election?

11:55 AM
@fossfreedom Let's hope so. I think it's rather ridiculous that I'm having all kinds of troubles connecting my Ubuntu system to other Linux based systems (i.e. Android devices using MTP, my NAS which has all kinds of issues when using NFS, Samba etc.)

jrg mentioned it ... discussion just starting.

jrg mentioned it? Is that an internal discussion within the mods?

discussion as to what part - if any - we mods should play etc. Dont know any more than that.

Right then.
It seems like I wont be around for the 2-3 weeks that we are having elections.
Probably going home town.

very sad :((

11:59 AM
:P
It could be a good thing for me.

me happy - on the front page of webupd8 ... \o/

yeah. congrats on the new release of coverart browser \o/

WTF... Canonical charges shipping costs when you buy services such as Ubuntu Advantage Desktop. What on earth do they plan to ship? An engineer? :D

are you getting it into debian repo?

@jokerdino Never really thought about that. The sponsor process sounds too time consuming and protracted.

12:03 PM
yay
I got my video driver working

@fossfreedom you're the guy who built coverart browser? Respect... IMHO it should ship by default with Ubuntu

needed to install kernel source, (headers was already installed) then use additional drivers to install the driver.
still can't believe they broke DKMS

@iGadget yep ... :) - thanks

default Rhythmbox is so ugly, I consider it broken :)

... which is why I wrote the plugin... looks much nicer now.

12:07 PM
hmmm... new dependencies with the new release I see?

@fossfreedom You would need to lobby a debian developer. That is the unwritten first step.

@iGadget the key new dependency is python-mutagen - it gives the ID3/FLAC/OGG support for coverart. Very nice.

@fossfreedom ah, marvelous. That's what I wanted to ask you - I noticed most of my embedded coverart was not 'seen' by the last version, so this has been addressed?

Or you can contact the Rhythmbox developers and see what they have to say.

@jokerdino sounds like a good idea - I'll drop a message on the mailing list.
@iGadget if you are in the habit of putting covers in your tracks - then yes, it will retrieve those for you.

12:12 PM
@fossfreedom Good luck. They may or may not play along nicely

@fossfreedom ok great... and do I have to trigger a refresh of some kind? I don't notice much difference after installing the update...

I would probably like it as one of the views supported by Rhythmbox on default.

@jokerdino well I consider that to be an absolute must-have if you want to compete with i.e. iTunes

@iGadget if you have the blank cover symbol (the music icon) - then right click the coverart source and choose "download all covers". If you already have coverart for your albums, it will ignore those.

Wohee :) Things just turned pretty :D
3
Now to find the option to stack compilation albums into 1 item...

12:17 PM
@iGadget highlight all the compilation albums - rightclick and choose properties - fill in the Album Artist with "Various Artists" - it will then collapse under one album cover.

@fossfreedom working like a charm... thank you!
@fossfreedom hmmm this gets me thinking - how hard would it be to implement a detection mechanism for duplicate covers and suggest filling in this value automatically for the user?

dangerous - lets say you have a compilation album called "greatest hits" - lots of compilation albums has that title - how do you figure out which track belongs to which album?

that's why you need to detect duplicate cover art, not titles :)

you also get compilation albums ... disc 1 and disc 2 ... both share the same cover design.

Sure, but you could prompt the user before proceeding. And perhaps add some intelligence i.e. when the tracks are in the same folder, there's a higher probability they're on the same album

12:27 PM
I would rather leave it to the users.

hmm ... raise an issue on our GitHub project page ... we can discuss it further.

ok, will do

@jokerdino ... yes - thats my initial thoughts ... but I'm open to persuasion.

12:38 PM

cheers ... when I get some time I'll throw some ideas at you.

sounds good :)

... also to say ... code-patches also welcome :P

One more question - how do I debug issues with embedded coverart? For example, one of the stacked items just shows no cover art (while the separate tracks did)
Yeah I wish would have coding skills so I could help out more... but unfortunately I'm just an average user with a vivid imagination ;)

raise an issue - email me the track containing the coverart so that I can examine it for you.

12:45 PM
ok, I'll put everything on github. Thanks :)

appears

12:59 PM
@fossfreedom where can I find your email address?

@iGadget home-page - look at the bottom of the README file

I feel kinda stupid here... but I don't see a README file on either github nor launchpad... which are the pages your profile links to :)

github.com/fossfreedom/coverart-browser - scroll to the bottom of the web-page.

righto... found it

1:14 PM
Anyone know the size of Ubuntu One its taking a while to install :(

@mojo706 how far into the installation process are you? I noticed a bogus 'processing' screen (which I still have to file a bug about) where you can simply click 'Next' to continue instantly. Maybe that's what's happening to you right now?

Is it saved as a draft?

@jokerdino Hi, I don't think so. It's asked & answered and I'm done with it. Clicking 'Discard' does not help.

Looks like someone doesn't like you.

Know what, I just tried 'discard draft' again and it worked. Strange. I'm certain I tried that already.

All is well then.
