Paste Ubuntu says: PHP and other Web scripts are not allowed
:O

@Lucio I've pasted JS before, and PHP is in the list... where did you read that?

Pruve by your self: <?php echo "HelloWorld!"; ?>

12:08 AM
You should enter the first PHP call as a comment.. //<?php
security thing..

ah, that makes sense

@Seth You, the PHP guy, what do you prefer, this code A or this code B
unless another one says be so :P

@Lucio em, I'm not really the PHP guy, but I think code 1 is better. Just no <blink> :P
actually, browsers don't support it anymore anyway.

@Seth Yes mine. But yeah, you're right, that statement shouldn't be used anymore, css instead.

@RolandiXor Code Academy just gave me a jQuery badge for doing a Python exercise :3

12:20 AM
That is a great site, I didn't knew it. I love their homepage :P
And it's available in Spanish.. \o/

yeah, its awesome!

Yeah sorry guys, I caught their first message and was about to ban them but then Half Life suddenly occurred. Then I came back and it was worse and I felt bad.

user19161
WTH is that guy suspended till 2026?

@Oli That's OK. Half-Life is necessary. :)
5

@JorgeCastro nice catch, i saw UEFI and went blind

12:46 AM
@Oli Episode 2? :P

@Oli lol

Oli
@JasonBourne It's just a spammer - I could have destroyed them but big bad bans are funny.
@Lucio No, the original Half Life (well, with the HD pack which is non-optional). It was released for Linux yesterday.

@JasonBourne that's the fourth time he has shown up under three different names. He posted at least three spam questions each time.

i'm loving the-dark-mod btw. i really need to fix the cross-building so normal humans that don't compile, rename, softlink to hard coded file-names, and dance widdershins can actually play it

user19161
@Seth Oh, probably a nutcase.

12:48 AM
@Oli Does he have an IP ban now? I'm not sure suspension will fix it, esp. since he's been deleted several times already.
I realize you can't do it...

but we knowz you gots the guyz that can on speed-dial

user19161
There is a nutcase who has created over 100 emails and accounts on ELU.

@JasonBourne yeah, or it might have something to do with another issue we've had here recently, but I don't want to bring that up.

user19161
Once he is detected, mods merge him into the main suspended account.

@Oli Oh, you will have to strive to finish the game, is very long :)

12:50 AM
@JasonBourne oh really? interesting.

guess not :(

12:56 AM
@oli tell me more about this HD pack

I don't see it, but we already have two half life stars...

I just snagged the game on steam last night

Oli
@JorgeCastro It's installed by default if what I'm reading is correct. If you tried to play with the original textures, you'd know about it - it's would be unbearably blocky.

user19161
@Seth Again?

12:57 AM
well I did crank it up to like something x 1080

@JasonBourne yep.

i didn't mean the post. i meant still posting

Glad @Oli is here.

@JorgeCastro Yeah that'll be available once HL2 is out.

user19161
@Seth I am wondering if it is the same guy on ELU.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing yeah, got a new account.
@JasonBourne ah, idk. Did he post movie ads?

user19161
12:59 AM
@Seth No, legitimate questions, but weird in other ways.

Oli
I haven't played it yet but I have played Half Life Source (pretty much the same goal - but much a rawer port to the source engine) and that was fun. People reckon that all four versions of the game are different and like with most things, you get people who like the latest (Black Mesa) and purists who want it warts-and-all (HL, sans HD) and everybody in between.

user19161
Hey anyone is aware of Ubuntu GNOME Remix developments? Its own website still doesn't have anything the last I checked!

Oli
The best thing about the GoldSrc engine being ported is we'll get to play all the addons that never got ported to the Source engine

@JasonBourne last I heard of it was a "its not working" question here.

user19161
@Seth I tried 12.10. It was very unstable. Firefox froze at least three times in a few days.

1:01 AM
@Oli And mods that don't really have equivalents (which might be part of what you mean). For example, TF2 is not the same as TFC. (I like TF2, but it's not the same.)
@JasonBourne Regular 12.10 or GNOME Remix 12.10? (I don't know a lot about GNOME Remix so please forgive me if that is obvious.)

Oli
@EliahKagan Indeed. Fortress Forever was the unofficial TFC port but it was never as good.

user19161
@EliahKagan GNOME Remix 12.10. I don't know much either!

@JasonBourne I use vanilla 12.10, works like a charm. Never touched Gnome remix.
I just sudo apt-get install gnome or gnome-core

user19161
@Seth You mean you install without the desktop at first?

@JasonBourne The Ubuntu GNOME Remix indicates bugs can be reported the same way as on vanilla Ubuntu.

1:04 AM
i gave up on gnome forks/remixes and just said openbox ftw. minor composite tweaking issues, but mostly i'm fine

@Seth For GNOME 3? Why not the gnome-shell package?

@JasonBourne never used minimal... would be fun to try..
@EliahKagan I am unaware of the differences between the two.

Not only does the live cd come with the desktop already, it also installs faster.

user19161
Because the disc image is just copied onto the hard disc, rather than the packages being installed one by one.

@Seth gnome-core pulls in a lot more stuff. (Much of it is already installed though, since Unity is also a GNOME desktop.) gnome gives you gnome-core and even more packages.

@EliahKagan I was told the other way around... I'll remember that.

@MarcoCeppi you sound flustrated...am i missing something?

HAH!
even numbers all around!

@JasonBourne no, they have a network installer that will boot minimal and install packages over the network, that's what I meant.

user19161
@JorgeCastro 45 is odd!

true true

1:12 AM
@JasonBourne The freeze is not necessarily related to it being GNOME Remix. Does Firefox freeze or crash? If it freezes (the program is still running, just nothing happens), do you get any messages in the Terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) if you run Firefox there with the command firefox ? Also, what do you get from ps ax | grep -v grep | grep firefox ? If it crashes, you can submit a crash report, though a core dump may contain personal information.

it still feels good though. \o/

user19161
Multiple of 5 throughout!

@JasonBourne Not a developer. But you're welcome! If you post the info here I can try to help you further. (If it becomes a lot of info a new room can be made, but as long as people are OK with it, it can be here in the general room).

Q: Should spam posts be edited, or still just flagged?

Eliah KaganWe've had an upswing of spam recently (hopefully short-lived), and I've noticed a few users editing spam posts to remove links. This has traditionally been considered a wrong approach on Ask Ubuntu. Does that recommendation still hold? Do we flag spam, but not edit it? Or has something changed?...

@jokerdino Indeed, it seems so.

Q: Are user-contributed hyperlinks always nofollow?

Eliah KaganI learned (from Jorge Castro) that links on Ask Ubuntu are nofollow. Thus linking to some page (say, spam) in a post here doesn't increase that page's rank in search engines. Is this the case for links in all user-contributed content? Or are links nofollow only for new users (or users with less ...

Q: How do you tell when a question is a bug?

SethI know questions that are bugs should be closed as off-topic with a comment explaining where to file a report. My question is, how do you tell when a question should be filed as a bug report? For example I saw this question. It looks a lot like a bug to me, but how do I know for sure? Or is...

Q: set gnome classic (no effect) as default

fishcrackerI am wondering is there a possibility that every time I logged in to my Ubuntu, the desktop is set to Gnome Classic (no effect)? It is too redundant to set and choose it in the login every time.

I don't use 12.04, but isn't that default?

Default is Unity-3d

@jokerdino In 12.10 if I log in with one DE that DE becomes the default unless I change it again...

What do you mean by default?
It only remembers what your last session was.

exactly.

3:11 AM
I think there is a way to make it the preferred session though.

@jokerdino You mean for all users, as the default the first time they log on?

Is that for the meta or this current discussion?

@jokerdino I was asking if you were talking about setting the preferred session on Ubuntu's LightDM login screen for all users, as the default the first time they log on. (So this current discussion.)

Per the question I posted, the OP wants to make 'Gnome Classic No Effects' default, I was asking, isn't that last one you use made default?

Ah, I feel silly. I remember there was a way to choose a session but it could very well be in 11.04.

3:23 AM
I was thinking this question might be relevant:
@Seth Yes, the last one used is the default. If it's not, that's probably a bug.
26
Q: How do I change the default session for when using auto-logins?

giowckWhen autologon is active, lightdm will start the Unity 3D session, not the 2D (or any other shell that I want to auto-login to). Is there a way to start the shell I want automatically (autologon)? Anyway, if autologon is disabled, the last used session is launched, and that's fine. I just want ...

@EliahKagan it's 12.04 though, does that change anything? (I've never used 12.04)

Given the dates on the answer, I think we can mark it as duplicate even for 12.04.

@Seth That is not changed, in 12.04, no. The OP's problem is that the available options are Ubuntu and Ubuntu 2D and neither of those is GNOME Classic.

@EliahKagan my understanding is he already has that installed.
I am wondering is there a possibility that every time I logged in to my Ubuntu, the desktop is set to Gnome Classic (no effect)? It is too redundant to set and choose it in the login every time.

Weird.
You dont have to choose it every time if that is what you logged into the previous time.

3:27 AM
that's what I was saying...

Sorry, just had my cup of hot beverage.

@Seth Yeah, you're right, that might not be the OP's problem. I had figured Unity 2D was loading instead of GNOME Classic.
If GNOME Classic is installed, and this user logged on it last time successfully, then it should appear as the default next time, including on 12.04. If it does not, that's a bug. But it might be best to answer this explaining the relevant issues--including the link you commented, explaining the expected behavior, explaining how to install GNOME Fallback if he doesn't have it.
If there are no objections, I think I'll submit such an answer (as CW, so if it turns out it makes sense to close the question as off-topic, people won't be reluctant to close-vote).

@EliahKagan okay, go for it :)
@EliahKagan ah, wait.

Q: gnome-panel where is it

fishcrackerI'm confused, I installed this gnome-panel from the Ubuntu Software Center. After that, I can't seem to locate where can I find it. All I see here in the preferences is this Compiz which I find not in favor of my minimalistic taste. I want to know the location where I can have preferences for the...

that might help us figure this out.
Looks like he installed gnome panel and expects Gnome Classic...

but aren't they pretty much the same thing?

@jokerdino no, they aren't. If you install gnome-panel and run it from a terminal you'll see what I mean.
gnome-panel is just the panel, that's it.

3:35 AM
I know. but I equate them for some reason.

@Seth It seems what's needed is an answer here explaining how to make gnome-panel run automatically.

Oh my, it's Jan 26.
Happy republic day my fellow Indians.

To enumerate, @amithkk, @mahesh and myself.
And another 1.2 billion of us.

@EliahKagan okay, I will add it.

@Seth Thx.
As this doesn't appear to be a bug, I will probably not bothering making my answer CW.

@Seth You were right, SO is filled of trolls. Without intention to offend

3:41 AM
it's a big place.

@Lucio Is there specific trolling that needs flagging? (If so, Regulators might actually be a better place to deal with the specifics, with links and so forth. Even though it's SO and not AU we can probably coordinate flagging of spam/offensive/NAA/NARQ posts there, so long as we don't let it take over Regulators.)

Massive, actually.

@EliahKagan Don't worry about it. It's more an attitude thing..

@Lucio Ah, I see.
@Seth If you add it, please let me know and I'll mention that in my answer on the other question and add a link to your answer (or you can edit my answer to add the link).

Nothing like AU :)

3:45 AM
@EliahKagan just finished.

@Seth Edited.
@iSeth Why recommend installing gnome-shell to get the GNOME Classic session type? It's provided specifically by the gnome-session-fallback package.

@EliahKagan ah, gnome session fallback. I looked for gnome-fallback and couldn't find it. I'll update.

Aw, I have just 200 mb for the rest of the month. I am bailing out.

@Seth Yeah, it's called that because it provides what the GNOME developers consider to be a "fallback" session--the idea being that the primary reason to use it is if there's no graphics acceleration to run GNOME Shell.

see ya @jokerdino :)

3:49 AM
@jokerdino Bye!

@EliahKagan is it still called "Gnome-classic" at the log in screen?

@Seth it's called GNOME Classic in 12.04. I think it's still called that in 12.10 and Raring, but I don't know for sure.

And someone help this guy out.

HardySwiftRelatively new full-time Ubuntu user, but experienced computer user. I'm asking a question that's been asked before, but my specific case seems to be unique. I installed the latest Ubuntu to my laptop in dual-boot mode with Win7. Overall I really like Ubuntu and I'm using it more often than Wind...

@jokerdino good answer. +1
I answered this, but now I think it might be a dupe...

@Seth Yes. But when it's closed, we should ask moderators to merge, as your answer is quite valuable.

4:01 AM
@EliahKagan you think so? I feel gratified :) It was only the work of two minutes...
Also, do you think my answer here needs calcification or reorganizing?

@Seth There's no other graphical answer there. BTW, if you want to put more work in, some file managers give accurate information about used and available space, and I'm pretty sure Nautilus is one of them. You could add that... If not, I'll probably post a separate answer (on the master) answering it.

@EliahKagan Okay, sounds good. Also applicable: askubuntu.com/q/2123/44179
@EliahKagan Nautilus doesn't seem to be too accurate. It says I've got 140 TB of space but only 1.9GB free...

@Seth It seemed pretty good. I've edited it some. Feel free to edit it more of course (or roll back) if you think my edit isn't good or could be improved.
@Seth Sounds like maybe that's not a good way then. What are you checking to get the free space? The device itself?

4:24 AM
@EliahKagan sorry, was AFK. Yes, I was checking the device itself. There's still no way I could have 140 TB anyway though :P

@Seth Yeah, that probably doesn't belong in the answer then. I wonder if there's a bug report for this...

good question.
thanks for the edit. It's alot better.

Hi

♫ It's Friday! ♫

4:40 AM
@GeorgeEdison - I know you're a Qt guy...any breaking news on Qt5 and the phone preview stuff?

:O
you're right!
totally forgot...

Nope - but funny you should mention Qt5. I'm just compiling the source on this machine right now.

i know you're a Qt expert/fanboi so i thought i should ask that person
and on "it's friday":

Someones know if a js array can be sent to a PHP function? I want to know if is this possible

anything can talk to anything via json/jsonp

4:44 AM
PHP is a server-side scripting language.

hey! I was going to say that @AbrahamVanHelpsing :P

JavaScript is a client-side scripting language.
But... as @AbrahamVanHelpsing was saying... a client-side script can definitely cause server-side code to be invoked.

@GeorgeEdison Yep.

Maybe I should have run 'make' instead of 'make -j3'...

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I don't understand what do you mean.

4:46 AM
all languages have json/jsonp adapters

@Lucio The JavaScript code is being interpreted by the web browser.
The PHP code is being interpreted by the PHP interpreter running on the server.

@GeorgeEdison did you hear there is going to be a mod election in 10 days?

@GeorgeEdison has this. I might have been being a lil snarky

The JavaScript code can make an HTTP request to a PHP script which can then do whatever it wants.
There are also WebSockets, but that's another story for another day.
@Seth Are you going to run?

GE used a buzzword...

4:48 AM
Has anyone here been around long enough to remember FlackBot?

yes
@roland has used it quasi-recently

Roland used it?

@GeorgeEdison I know what you mean. I can send integer or string variables, but I don't know how to send an array.

@GeorgeEdison me run? I don't even have 3k.. I don't think I'd get anywhere :(

It's currently broken. How could he use it?
@Lucio You need to encode it as a JSON string.
@Seth Reputation is a small factor - there are other more important factors.
5

4:50 AM
@GeorgeEdison Oh, now I have an idea. I will search info.. Thanks!

@GeorgeEdison I just remember a nonsensical statement that was comprised of a question, an answer, and a comment or some such

@Lucio Here's an example:
var stuff = [1,2,3,4,5,6];
var json_string = JSON.stringify(stuff);

@GeorgeEdison I guess that's true enough...

You would stand a better chance than you think

Why do I need those on a headless server?

4:54 AM
@GeorgeEdison lol. good question.

maybe some video codec that pulls in hardware encoding/decoding that way?

But the Radeon driver???

@AbrahamVanHelpsing you got my gears turning...

@Seth It's great experience.

@GeorgeEdison Yeah, I'm thinking something pointed at a blanket video driver pseudo-package so they didn't have to check for version numbers etc etc

4:57 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Just as long as it's not taking up a bunch of space on my server.
It's probably easier to just leave it be than mess around with meta-packages while I try to remove it.

./configure --make-my-video-re-encoding-slow && make && make install

Q: C++ Project to contribute

Alwin DossI want to contribute to a C++ project in Ubuntu. Since there are so many applications(different programming languages) I am having trouble finding a simple one to start my journey as a developer. If you guys could suggest me I will keep my research focused to those applications(to begin with)

OT?

i may be in a bit of a mood...sorry if it comes across less funny than i meant it
@Seth yes OT

@AbrahamVanHelpsing no worries :)

While contributions are admirable, this is a QA site. If you really want to contribute specifically to an Ubuntu C++ project, then you should hop on IRC. I'm sure someone on the Ubu or Ubu+1 channels could point you at a package that desperately wants help. Or squash a bug or two on launchpad. — AbrahamVanHelpsing 15 secs ago

nice comment.

@Seth - you may want to keep an eye on bounties or look for a rep-rocket question if you're really concerned about the rep thing

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I'm not too concerned. Just want to get to 3k. I'll keep an eye out though :)
I'm gonna go to bed now.
If someone has time, I've created a small backlog in the Regulators room. It starts here if someone has time to pop in. Thanks!

did my part on that chain. comment but no action on 1 and no action on 1

@GeorgeEdison Thanks, that worked very well. Very useful for my. Then in the PHP code I must process it as a string but good enough.
@Seth night

@Lucio php.is.evil.

5:18 AM
haha, sure, this: count(AbrahamVanHel[php.is.evil.comments]); will return a big integer ;)
I will go to bed also. cya

select * from AHComments WHERE "php.is.evil" IN CommentBody; returns a bajillion rows
