I'm using RHEL and asking a question on AU...I don't know what's on-topic any more

Q: http_proxy - not working with sudo

AmilI am working on RHEL6 behind a proxy at my workplace. In order to make wget and other applications work, I modified my /etc/environment and added definitions for http_proxy, https_proxy, and ftp_proxy. I logged out and back in. As desired, wget works correctly. However, commands like sudo wget ...

:D
This question should be framed.

Yeah, the thing is that not closing things as OT or asking for migration to UL is just fodder for the folks that are crying about there being a separate AU site. I've taken heat before on "general linux questions" being on-topic, but there needs to be a line somewhere...

Exactly.

These blue lines should appear by default when people mention RHEL or Mint or...

mythtv respins or ... ... ...

Cool - you can now log in to any of your remote desktops from a machine running 12.10

lol :P

Well - they introduced the remote account - so it's basically a guest session accessing a remote desktop.

@AskUbuntuMeta sounds like you were talking about God lol
@Takkat my lol was for your message about RHEL and Mint
I saw the remote feature, but I haven't tried it yet
I don't have anything to use it with I don't think

Everything tinted in MS-blue should make people aware they are now off topic here ;)
(my desktop in my office is MS-blue - that's why I hate this color)
(they even blocked changing wallpapers there)

lol
I like blue (it's my fav colour)
But not MS blue

9:21 PM
<-- likes green a lot

@Takkat have you tried running desktops?

What fonts I will install for show this 💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋 http://askubuntu.com/q/189839?atw=1 #fonts

running?

desktops is an app from winternals that lets you run a separate desktop env
and i meant to ask...is that a HAL 9000 reference on the gravatar?

💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋 - anybody sees more than squares here?

@aking1012 sort of yes and no. I made that for my app and liked it.

@Takkat works fine for me
The person didn't need to spam it though

@aking1012 the machines where I worked are totally securely locked down. You also had to sign to not install anything not approved by our IT department... They themed 7 with an XP theme.
^^still work (tomorrow I hope)

oh. i don't think desktops requires an install. iirc it's a portable app

I fixed the above question.

Q: What fonts do I need to install for special characters to work?

EduardoWhat fonts do I need to install on Ubuntu in order to see special characters ( for example)?

9:27 PM
Nice fix but what does 💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋 read?

It's lips

I see - very useful for a lot of things.

pity there's no trollolol unicode character...wait, if there were...hmmmm
grr, i have to make a dozen models in sencha to parse complex json. frameworks to the fail-scue it's like the opposite of re-scue

12.10 is soooo sloooow in Virtual Box - feels like running on an 1/8-core
at least it lets me study how all the desktop animations are done.
Fade in is like 5 steps.
Fade out is like: System program problem detected
Oh - that's new: The application Compiz has closed unexpectedly :/
Nice: Ignore future problems is ticked by default.

9:39 PM
as it should be...

Success!
I managed to get Firefox to talk with my custom SSL server app.

gj

great

It seems like the problem was that I forgot to point Qt to my private key.
Anyway... it works now.

as long as you get to it works!!! that's all that matters right?

9:43 PM
It works in Chrome to so I think we're in business.
@aking1012 That's it exactly.
Next question to answer... should I embed the private key/certificate in the executable or not?

no
public key only

But the server won't work without the private key.
...and the executable will be protected by the same measures as would the private key if it were a separate file.

jrg
embedding stuff is a terrible idea.

i would go with a configuration option where they have to provide a priv key of their own...or a script like openvpn did to generate their own keys with openssl.exe or whatever

jrg
I'm speaking from recent experience.

9:47 PM
i love it when someone compiles a keygenme with the "generator" part still in there and you have a two <-> three byte patch to make it self-key-genning

@aking1012 This is a proprietary application that will likely never be used by anyone other than me.

nvm I just scrolled up

But I see your point.
I should probably have the certificate and keys as separate files and then pass them as command line arguments or something.
That way it becomes easier for me to issue a new key / certificate.

0 A.D. is in the 12.10 repos!

That's awesome.
Downloads should be much quicker now.
(Launchpad can be slow at times.)
Okay. I'll take your word for it.

jrg
9:59 PM
probably shouldn't have disclosed that, but yeah.

Bedtime here - good night all

@GeorgeEdison indeed
@jrg no worries I didn't see.

jrg
10:47 PM
Excellent.
