LibreOffice? I'm not in the writing mood :S
(and I need to stop thinking out loud)

I'm trying to figure out SSL. Not fun.

it's not so bad.

I'll say that later once the code is written - just not yet :P

it makes a lot more sense if you generate the couple of self signed certs and just use a socket wrapper example from "https from httpsimpleserver" in python. then you've got the basic idea. you can add on client validation if you want after that and you start to get the idea

Right.

12:11 AM
just got a simple python http server+sencha(with some views and buttons)+android+ playing nicely together...i got spoiled by the ease of python+gtk/pygi

yeah...i'm liking sencha in theory, but in application it seems like if you're not using their IDE/builder it's a lot more involved than it could be

Currently how many users are registered in askubuntu ??

Q: How to check that how many users are registered with AU till date?

karthick87I would like to check that how many users are registered with AU so far. A graph which shows from start date to till date will be fine. We are going to conduct a ubuntu workshop for 2 days. I would like to share about the AU support and no of users in AU. Thanks in advance.

Let's see
stackexchange.com/sites#users shows you the total users, including both registered and not registered

there can be unregistered users?

11:43 AM
yeah.

how does one do that?
is it like the people who simply visit the site?

@ShyamK yea something like that.
you just visit the site and ask or answer a question.
on SO however, you need to register to ask a question.

aah... I'm familiar with the SO method only... was not aware of this ^...

yeah. not many know you don't have to register

@jokerdino yeah ... and those guys are a pain in the ***** - forever creating "answers" when they lose their browser cookie.

11:50 AM
@fossfreedom hahah
i like them because they give me free flags :D
but on a serious note, they are quite annoying..
when they lose cookie, they can't even mark the answer as correct or something.

... yeah - I'm forever merging accounts - but they rarely come back to tick that box.

hehe, you are doing a thankless job merging those throwaway accounts. :P
and most of these people have not much of an interest in how things work apparently.

fly-by-merchants ... ban all users...

yay!
or at least make it necessary to register an account like in SO?
that might actually help.

SO doesnt allow unregistered users?

11:55 AM
in SO, you need to register to ask a question.
but free for answering questions though.

wonder if we have a meta? - might be worth asking for the community view

someone should start a meta thread.. looks around

point finger at dino

anyway, i am going off for a while. be back later.
@fossfreedom lol, maybe the weekend.. :/

Q: Is it proper to closevote one's own questions?

ObsessiveFOSSI sometimes run into a situation where I realize my own question is a dupe, or the problem goes away, and I need to vote to close as too localized, or with another close reason. It it proper to closevote my question, or should I flag, wait, or do something else?

6:07 PM
Can you answer this? How to print standard error in red http://askubuntu.com/q/189855?atw=1 #gnometerminal

I have a drive which I used to use as a backup drive on this computer. I removed it prior to upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04 because I was also installing a new GPU which was too big and the extra drive wouldn't fit.

Well now a client is reporting a bug on some 2 year old software I wrote and the sources are on this drive. So I plugged it back in and now, of the two partitions on it, only one will allow me to view/edit the files. The other says there is X amount of data being used but I cannot see anything on the drive.
Any suggestions on tools / techniques on how to proceed?
Ohh it is also probably good to note: the drive ORIGINALLY came from a windows machine - on 11.10 I didn't have to format it or anything the NTFS filesystem just 'ran' (might have done something to it idk. it just worked from the get-go)

hi all

o/ hai @htorque

did anyone try black mesa on ubuntu yet?

negative

6:17 PM
blindly downloading 7gb to find out whether it works or not :D

@rlemon was that partition by any chance encrypted?

S e v e n Gigs??? O.O

@Takkat shouldn't have been I didn't encrypt anything (no home encryption)

@htorque My GPU would burn down to ashes on the intro I guess.
@rlemon only a guess.

6:19 PM
would it make sense that there is a difference in how NTFS is read between 11.10 and 12.04 (I did notice inconsistencies in other drivers between versions)

NTFS did not change. So why should Ubuntu access it differently? Not that I know of any differences from 11.10 to 12.04.

@Takkat it's an old game with new graphics - i hope hope hope it's not too demanding on the GPU :D

New graphix always are.

got a 3840x1080 resolution with an integrated intel gpu :D
if it's more demanding than pac man then it won't run :D

is getting pale of envy

6:22 PM
@Takkat well for example: I was "hacking" my GPU into my box (didn't provide it enough power) and 11.10 didn't care at all that I was doing this (needed dual display and didn't feel like getting a new PSU) however 12.04 demanded that my GPU was at full power before I could use it.

any 50€ graphics card has moar powa

Only if it was new. Mine was €50,- 2 years ago.
But its one of those Nvidias that make no problems.

:D
nvidia. no problems. sure.
:P

However I'm scared to upgrade the drivers ;)
@rlemon can you read your drive from Windows?

the visible partition to Ubuntu is visible to windows - the 'half visible' partition in Ubuntu is not recognized at all under windows XP (haven't tried 7)
hrmm, maybe I can boot from the 11.10 liveCD and see if that reads it

6:26 PM
@rlemon a Windows drive not seen by Windows is bad.

that is the thing - just the one partition. and I'm not sure if having it in the Ubuntu machine mounted for so long did anything to it :s

only an unseen windows drive is a good windows drive. :P

ugh

@htorque No, no - only an unseen Windows is good for a drive :D

well lets try booting into 11.10
brb

6:28 PM
@rlemon did you try chkdsk from Windows?

you have to pay me to use windows! (unfortunately, that's what my employer does :D)

Mine do too :D :D :D
That's the good thing about this OS - you get paid for using it.
Imagine that with Ubuntu!

to be fair, i wouldn't work for free if i could use just ubuntu. :P

lol
Our major company custom software runs in a Suse VM on a Solaris host accessed by terminal from Windows7.

Hello

6:41 PM
o/

I just noticed here on the software centre. The screenshot is from Windows...

roflcopter...what do you expect when they put a pdf editor in software center for 125 USD?

:P
That was my other thought, $125!?!

with all the money you saved not buying a windows license, buy this pdf editor. forget all that export from to pdf and OCR you've been doing for free

Is that seriously on there!?

6:47 PM
no...it isn't. it's just what ran through my head

:P
The italics made me think it was a quote

aaaaaand it crashes.

7 GB can't crash

it turned off my second monitor and set the resolution of the other one to 1024x768 :D

1024x768 wasn't that possible in Half Life already?
<-- admits he didn't play it then because of other fluffy things in mind

7:04 PM
well, i take it as a sign: don't waste your time with games

Fluffy things may be a waste of time too.

:D

all things "may" be a waste of time. it's about what outputs you value. games aren't necessarily a waste if they give you mental release that you need. coding projects aren't a waste if they keep you sharper than you would have been. etc etc

i'll ask you again when you are old :P

;) I think the theory will remain sound, but the outputs I value may change.

7:22 PM
I bet nobody had the power to debug Ubuntu if they were not trained from playing games.
Games are the root of all good.

time for bed, cya
