4:00 PM
I intend to build an application that uses AJAX to pass parameters, which in turn (on the server side) dynamically creates either XML or JSON and that is processed by jQuery on the client side to finally output tables and graphs
which would be better for this - XML or JSON?

json is prettier to work with for sure

Ok good night all :P

@jokerdino night

@jokerdino 'night machi

good night @jokerdino

4:01 PM
Ta. 3 pings. :)
o/

:)

@jokerdino have a good night

@aking1012 Cool, will it also be helpful if I intend to put in a export to PDF functionality for the table later on?
or is that HTML's headache?

brb

cough gasp
im back

4:04 PM
@nitstorm tbh, as long as you have the data in the server side model everything is equally complex. if i write an "exporter" for say...json...i would have the opposite "importer" built at the same time. so i do all real operations on the model, not on an exported blob

note to all: never buy latitude laptops

Hello all

@aking1012 Aha!

makes sense right?

@aking1012 Definitely does :) Thanks a ton :)

4:06 PM
np

:)
btw, do you have any bookmarks or links that'll help me build tables out of JSON data?

are you using a toolkit already?

@aking1012 what's that?

what are you using to make charts
sencha has a beautiful charting module

umm, just one sec... I bookmarked it...

@aking1012 I just need something dead simple to implement bar graphs, so I thought of - workshop.rs/jqbargraph

@nitstorm haven't used it, so i couldn't say. but from json to graph should be easy-peasy if you format your json properly

Cool :)
How's Sencha to use?

@AmithKK LOL :P

4:10 PM
@nitstorm the initial learning curve is a bit of a pain, but once you're used to it...it's pure unadulterated glory

ah I see...
Thanks for the help @aking1012 :)

hopefully you finish whatever it is you're working on ;)

I hope for the same thing as well :) Building a headache diary thingy - github.com/nitstorm/darcy-the-headache-diary/tree/devel

headache diary? is that to record what days you have a headache? or a creatively named trouble ticket tracking system...

the first one, track days you have headaches, tries to figure out what triggers them

4:19 PM
bbl

either way would have been interesting. i don't really get headaches unless i skip/skimp on coffee

@aking1012 Nice :)

4:31 PM
Hey guys, tell me if I correct here:

A: Does LibreOffice have an "Outline View" similar to Microsoft 2010?

Roland TaylorI'm not 100% sure what this Outline View is, but I believe you mean the Navigator feature (that's what it's called in LibreOffice), and if it's that, LibreOffice had it first ;) (Microsoft copies too :). To open it, just go to view>navigator or press F5.

idk why he accepted my answer

BBT

@RolandTaylor luke...i am your navigator <-- hilarious

Good Night

night

4:36 PM
@aking1012 lol
So, no one has MS Office 2010?

What is the problem with it?

I've got office 2010, what's needed?

I just need to know if the Outline View is analogous to the Navigator in LibreOffice as I suggested.

Roland give him a vote so that we can talk to him in chat

@RolandTaylor Outline view in 2010 looks like a bulleted list..

4:49 PM
@Anwar you edited her title incorrectly.
It's have, not has
@Mitch Honestly I don't see how that one is useful lol.

@RolandTaylor I agree, but you asked :)

Lol yes I did :P

BRB

I just wanted to know what it is
So I can be sure I have the right think

If i enable outline view, impress quits immediately

4:57 PM
That's a bug.

From somewhere on the web, outline view of MSWord and Navigator of LibreOffice: comments.gmane.org/…

@RolandTaylor you got my email?

@Anwar not yet
I haven't checked for today

oh. ok

No, I have a MAC, but I'm starting to dislike them..

@Takkat those are iPaper

iPaper mini or pro? Looks like pro to me.

@Anwar Did you get my comment?
lol

5:06 PM
im going crazy

i voted it to close as not a real question
@Mitch what comment?

why is apache giving me 403?????
little sucker's driving me insane

About your good answer, I forgot what question now. haha

@Takkat does it come in Black?

Is it deleting virus ... everything from USB disk?

5:10 PM
@RolandTaylor lol :)

I know that bounty is over, but can any one tell me if this is OK. Just so I'll know.

@Mitch i haven't seen any comment from you. thanks anyway.
@Mitch honestly i don't know, it seems it is correct one which can remove most of the java.

hey y'all

@msPeachy hi

@msPeachy o/

5:18 PM
@LuisAlvarado hi.

o/

What happened with update-manager?

@msPeachy hey :D

@Anwar yeah wanted to talk to you about it
At least I got an answer for my gf

hi all

5:19 PM
hi my love, the reason the problem happened is because its a beta ^^

@LuisAlvarado what answer?
@LuisAlvarado ha ha.

after an update she did yesterday also it appeared to make the update manager show what was being downloaded

@Anwar it's now software updater in quantal

@msPeachy thanks for the info.
are you on it?

See, now it shows what is being downloaded. nice would also be to add the speed of download.

5:21 PM
@msPeachy you're on Quantal?
@htorque oi

@Anwar I used to.

Nice. what should be done with the question @LuisAlvarado

@RolandTaylor yes before, but I'm on Oneiric now

@Anwar I deleted the question because you were correct, it was an Ubuntu+1 question, although in my little defense I posted because I thought that was the way it was suppose to be.
silly rabbits, I mean me, it was just a small bug

I think, they just linked the button with the old update-manager.
the window is too similar
nice decision to delete

5:26 PM
@msPeachy join the dark side!

Yes... the dark side
we got free cookies here
with... DARK CHOCOLATE!

We have cookies, pie, and guyabano

@RolandTaylor I get disk issues with the 12.xx releases

@msPeachy oh :(

Disk issues like what kind?

5:28 PM
Did you report a bug?

is it something around the lines of "your disk might fail"?

@RolandTaylor yes, I'll stick with Oneiric for now, it's not giving me any problems at all
@LuisAlvarado no, nothing like that

BBL

no such partition on boot, grub rescue, hda disk errors, mostly on boot, unaccessible partitions, very slooow boot time, etc
@RolandTaylor nope

does anyone know of a program like sflowtrend for ubuntu?
for analyzing sflow/netflow data

5:31 PM
@msPeachy you should :O
If not you'll be stuck on old software for too long :(
@jrg ... it wasn't me
HONEST!

jrg
'sup.

@SirCharlo - Typing sflow I got Open Vswitch on the software center. Does that help

@RolandTaylor I see. I'll upgrade on the final release of quantal

@msPeachy you should report a bug though, so that if possible the problem can be fixed before you risk upgrading

@LuisAlvarado not really :S
@LuisAlvarado this is what sflowtrend does

5:34 PM
@msPeachy - I recommend you wait at least a month, month and half before upgrading to 12.10. Because of the performance patches that normally land after a release. About a month after a release is safe to upgrade if you are one of those people that always have upgrading problems.

its monitoring one of our procurve switches
however, its a windows app
id like to have a sort of web version, that runs in ubuntu
but i havent found much yet

let me look for one

i installed nfsen, but the interface is quite disappointing
sFlowTrend has waaay more details too
I can analyse traffic from certain workstations only, or which protocol is using up most of our bandwidth
thats pretty much what id like, except in ubuntu :P

what about Open vSwitch graphical monitoring tool

jrg
pfsense has some stuff in that, it's useful.

jrg
openvswitch isn't exactly what he's looking for... i think.

since it analyses traffic and can do specific workstations

i wasnt aware that vswitch had such a tool, for monitoring existing facilities?
linky?

look there it says a whole bunch of stuff i didnt even know could be done right now in Ubuntu
very updated also, last update came 7 days ago

bed time. good night every one.

5:39 PM
bye peachy

We will miss peachy
she was the best peach in all the chat

@LuisAlvarado yeah but it implies here that vswitch isnt a sflow collector

then you just killed me

and what i need is a collector, as my procurve is doing the agent work

can't find at least one that comes with ubuntu

5:41 PM
updating all my eclipse plug-ins at once. wish me luck

@msPeachy :O

jrg
@aking1012 you're in trouble.

I always miss it when msPeachy leaves lol

@aking1012 fingers crossed

fingers crossed and dancing widdershins during the downloads

5:42 PM
@Anwar check your mail :)

ok 12.10 yelling me to reboot pc
see you guys, sorry @SirCharlo about not finding an answer.

@LuisAlvarado look at it deeply it may be the last time ;)

seems to have worked. i suppose i'll know by tomorrow...

<-- uncrosses fingers

jrg
Go work for Zypher. :)

5:50 PM
@jrg ty, bookmarked to prep a cover letter

jrg
Let me know if you need a invite to careers.SO, I have some.

i got one courtesy of cross-exchange rep

jrg
sweet.

@LuisAlvarado no problem, thanks for trying! :)

6:09 PM
Any bash scripting gurus here ??
Can anyone help me with this backup script gist.github.com/9414102308d5b4ce6097 I need to take backup of all linux systems (only the files which is in their Desktop) all the linux systems are configured with samba file share.. i need to copy the user files which is in their desktop (/home/operator1/Desktop) and i have to compress it with timestamp say if the ip address is 172.29.34.10 then the files should be compressed and named as TME10date.tar

jrg
oh, i'd just do a puppet cronjob via tar and rsync.
are these the same machines that you've asked for help with in the past?

why are you using two different date formats??

@jrg: i dont think that i have asked help for backup in the past..

jrg
@karthick87 not for backup, for you have asked for linux systems and Desktops.

@jrg: Yes yes
@aking1012 sorry for that i have to comment out the first one

jrg
6:16 PM
so, are these machines managed via puppet?

@jrg: Oops not now, coz recently we have upgraded all these machines :(

jrg
oh. :( that makes it difficult.

but i have setup-ed password less login via ssh
@jrg currently we used to backup like this
#!/bin/sh
#############################
# TMEUB141 #
#############################
cd ..
cd /tmefiles/
smbclient //172.29.34.141/tmefiles "" -N -Tc TMEUB141.tar
exit $exitcode
I would like to simply it using a for loop

Can someone close this

@karthick87 why not something like:
#!/bin/bash

username="domain\user"
password="password"

savepath="/root/backups/"
mountpoint="/mnt/backmeup"

#connect to the share
for addr in 172.29.34.{31..33}
do
  echo $addr
  filename=TME$addr_$(date +%Y-%m-%d).tar
  sharename=//$addr/Desktop
  echo mount.smbfs $sharename $mountpoint -o username=$username,password=$password
  echo tar -cf $savepath$filename $mountpoint
  echo umount /mnt/backmeup
done
echo inserted for testing, but it should probably work okay

@aking1012 what username and password are you referring??

whatever the user and password is for the share

I dont have any username and password for samba share

then modify it for whatever mount options you need to the mount command

jrg
6:34 PM
eek. that's insecure. but ok

what is mountpoint there?? Is that the path of the remote hosts which needs to backed up?? Say "/home/operator1/Desktop/" ?

that script needs a \ in front of the _
anyway...
for address
build filename
build sharename
mount the share so it looks like a local directory
tar it up
unmount it
done

will try it. Thank you :)

@karthick87 it should. don't forget to add the \ so it's \_ not _ ...

6:42 PM
Do you mean here
filename=TME$addr_$(date +%Y-%m-%d).tar

yes

oke
@aking1012 i dont think it will save the backup as TME31date.tar etc..
will it ??

it should. leave the echos in there and see the output
oops, just a sec
172.29.34.31
mount.smbfs //172.29.34.31/Desktop /mnt/backmeup -o username=domain\user,password=password
tar -cf /root/backups/TME31_2012-09-14.tar /mnt/backmeup
umount /mnt/backmeup
172.29.34.32
mount.smbfs //172.29.34.32/Desktop /mnt/backmeup -o username=domain\user,password=password
tar -cf /root/backups/TME32_2012-09-14.tar /mnt/backmeup
umount /mnt/backmeup
172.29.34.33

tar -cf /root/backups/TME33_2012-09-14.tar /mnt/backmeup
from:
#!/bin/bash

username="domain\user"
password="password"

savepath="/root/backups/"
mountpoint="/mnt/backmeup"

#connect to the share
for addr in {31..33}
do
  echo 172.29.34.$addr
  filename=TME$addr\_$(date +%Y-%m-%d).tar
  sharename=//172.29.34.$addr/Desktop
  echo mount.smbfs $sharename $mountpoint -o username=$username,password=$password
  echo tar -cf $savepath$filename $mountpoint
  echo umount /mnt/backmeup
done
okay. done clogging the feed for a while. i'm afk to see about getting an xmpp notifier mini-app finished for android and a my flashcards thing with some more progress

jrg
7:08 PM
@aking1012 if you need testers/another set of eyes on the android app, shoot me an APK.

@jrg will do. somebody here wanted one so they could have some server send their phone a text notification without SMS

jrg
@aking1012 Oh, that'd be useful.
I could have nagios sent to my tablet like that.

@ObsessiveFOSS you read russian?

@SirCharlo And speak it natively. I was born in Russia to a Russian father and a North Vietnamese mother. That's why everyone who knows me thinks I'm communist.

@ObsessiveFOSS we really have a diverse community! :P

Anyone using Freenet?

jrg
what is freenet?

Anonymous internet distributed via peers. Currently I am just testing it to see whether it is viable for actual use.
@jrg -^

jrg
that sounds like TOR.

@jrg Not really. Tor is a way to get through peers to a real website; freenet builds a distributed internet without a set server for each object.

jrg
java based? Hm...
i haven't looked into it

7:58 PM
Let's say I start a blog. Even through Tor, it's on one server, although the request passes through many onion routers. On freenet, it's being passed and thrown about the network, supported like a person being held in the air by a crowd.

jrg
so it is a distributed internet.

Basically. It's a distributed datastore, with files, sites, and even message boards being stored there.
Care to join the Darknet portion? It involves marginal trust in online(and real) acquaintances and can either run just a small network, or make more secure connections to the worldwide network.

8:29 PM
and eclipse lost all the project templates... grr

8:48 PM
Hi all !

9:00 PM
so i found my eclipse problem. an update to the aptana plug-ins (and later the plugin if installed clean) is missing a favicon that it doesn't handle gracefully...so i'm adding a favicon.ico of linux-nvidia

jrg
Nice icon
@ObsessiveFOSS nope, i stay far away from darknets.
besides, for all I know you're my dad, hiding, trying to trick me into doing stuff with his network.

@jrg i'm sorry dave, my accelerated javascript engine is too awesome to let you do that...
okay...the aptana plug-in is now thoroughly broken. i only really used it for pydev anyway...moving on

jrg

Q: Ubuntu Messed up my Grub

ghaschelI have Windows XP Installed, and i have installed Fedora 15, yesterday. Updated it today to 17, and installed Ubuntu. After installing ubuntu, it messed up the grub. Grub wont find fedora anymore. I have tried booting from the Live CD, and installing Boot-Repair. It find a Raid unit, asks for mda...

Can you answer this? How to automatically resize the Dash when screen dimensions change? http://askubuntu.com/q/184281?atw=1 #dash

9:14 PM
@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L you know...i really wish people would stop crying about ubuntu not recognizing fedora...
i mean it's not like it refuses to boot from usb if it finds another OS on your external drive...

jrg
does my answer still work?

yes

jrg
(i replaced my fedora with a 12.10 install)
well, lets dupe 'em then.

from UL?
the only complaints i heard were pebkac about not being able to mount the partition

jrg
just flagged it, now i'll have Mrozek breathing down my neck for at least 3 weeks for clogging up his flags. ;)

9:18 PM
he's in room if you wanted to ping him...

jrg
nah. flags are the proper way to deal with it.

kk. so anyway. reinstalling all the android dev kit stuff now too. if i'm going to do a clean eclipse setup...it's going to be clean. i created an imbalance in the force earlier trying to get an eclipse plug-in update to work

UGT morning
:D

morning

lol I thought its one ofgeneral excited teen language "morninggg"
but then u edited :P

9:25 PM
yes. not a teen. it would take to teens to be my age, or ~4 to equal my level of cynicism

haha
how much time does it take from binary is built on ppa to get to update manager?

jrg
depends. normally about 20-30 minutes for me.

hmm does it depend on ppa itself or is it variable from user to user?

jrg
ppa/update manager - you might have to force UM to check for updates

I did sudo apt-get update / upgrade (if that is what you were referring to)

jrg
9:32 PM
yeah, that's what i was referring to

i get processed in about a half hour from dput per architecture per distribution. after that it's instantly installable if you force the update
so basically what he said points at @jrg

ok I think I just need to wait, e17 ppa broke and I can see ppa itself have newer binaries but I'm not receiving updates yet

oh lord. tell me enlightenment isn't getting popular. it'll be the new rash of questions like we got from cinnamon for a while

haha nah its not -- but try using terminology (I would anytime prefer it over any other terminal emulator)
been using ut under gnome-shell for last 2/3 days and I'm kinda hooked to it

jrg
i like gnome-terminal + byobu.
i have no reason/want to change. :(

9:37 PM
byobu -- only when I'm ssh'ing, I'm always up for checking out new stuff never know what I may like :)

@jrg i like gnome-term and python subprocessing mods as required
so the reason linux distros will eventually pwn underlying market forces:

xiki.org in case if u guys work with webpages and ruby

@wisemonkey that's kind of neat, but i'm more of a python fellow

I need to rip the song thanks @aking1012 :)
@aking1012 sure I just threw it there in case
better its on soundcloud awesome

10:15 PM
Sooo... Notifier.js was in this weeks issue of JavaScript Weekly... which is kinda cool :P

jrg
@rlemon add a license to it, otherwise nobody will use it. :-P
@wisemonkey amithkk was trying to get that working earlier. I need to look into it.

@rlemon nice. and yeah...for some reason people are paranoid about submarine licensing

i dunno GPL or WTFPL

copyleft

tbh I never think about licencing because I never expect ppl to want to use my code . :/

10:20 PM
fair point

jrg
I use MIT/BSD for my stuff.
Speaking of which, I need to look into getting a MIT licensed copy of something... hmm.

google needs to pull all "SDK components" that require auth to download from their checklist in the android SDK manager

jrg
Oh, that annoyed me to no end last week. :-(
its almost all the device manufacturer ones.

@jrg do u mean xiki?

jrg
@wisemonkey Yeah.

10:23 PM
@jrg yeah. i have auth for about half of them...but it shouldn't be in the sdk without a pre-emptive warning to go fetch all your credentials
YEEESSSSS someone does it to the google indexer. makes me smile that someone rate-limits google-crawlers

@jrg I don't do web dev or don't know any framework so its not much helpful to me
I just use terminal part :P
off-topic but does any of u play GW2 ?

10:40 PM
@wisemonkey i don't even know what that is...

A: Is there an easy way to repartition my hard disk?

andrewchuck norris could do it no problem.....

hehe, anyways at that reputation he probably can't comment
I've been flagged for dubious answer when I couldn't comment

@wisemonkey IMHO comments should come before answers. Comments are more trivial, and upvotes on them can gain rep for the first 15 rep or so...

I would think so but its not that way..

10:50 PM
heh...a question has only 18 upvotes, but 2k+ views. doing the math that means only on in every hundred people voted. sad...

@aking1012 Link, please?

Q: Connect WebKit WebView form to a Python callback?

jonobaconI am writing a small Python and WebKit app; I am using WebKit as the UI for my app. What I want to do is to create an interactive element in WebKit (namely a combo box or a set of clickable regions) and when the user interacts with these elements I can call a Python callback to do some processin...

i tried to draw some attention to it with a bounty, but it's for an existing answer

I generally don't upvote if question is not related to me and I just viewed it caused it was somehow in my irrelevant search results or just presented 1st due to update

fair point. it was just one of those things. i wonder what the average view to vote ratio is...

and @aking1012 do u think it belongs to stackoverflow? -- I really have no clue about python / webkit or any of those listed there however seemed like people are responding with code, probably stackoverflow will yield better results?

10:55 PM
@wisemonkey I would sey yes, but it is already being answered here and involved many Ubuntu technologies.

@wisemonkey it has a great answer...and it's python -> quickly -> desktop webapps -> an initiative that ubuntu is supporting see fogger and desktop web-apps

ahh I get it

11:46 PM
ubuntu code tech stuff is ontopic on AU
