and no problem about it being late, been a bit busy myself. sometimes to just not notice things.

@LordofTime I was actually obsessing over it for a while while away, and I couldn't get WiFi.

izx
@JorgeCastro I think that's being charitable -- and is the exception rather than the rule. An experienced user with ~150 questions and that accept rate probably means he's either asking incredibly difficult questions, or he's not following up, whether to clarify and work with the answerers to make an answer acceptable to him or simply to return and look at the posted answers to consider if any are acceptable.

@ObsessiveFOSS ah, well don't worry about it
i'll be without wifi for a week anyways
unless i pay insane amounts of money
(no coffee shops with free wifi at the beach!)

@LordofTime I was just at Cape Cod...

nice, how was it

" If you see a high percentage, it’s an engaged user, someone who frequently goes back and interacts with their questions after asking.

It is considered good manners to accept answers on your questions, eventually, but accepting answers is not required. In general, an accept rate of 70% or better is quite good, meaning you accept answers on 7 out of 10 questions that you ask."

ouch
@izx so having an accept rate of 96% is even better?

@LordofTime get beyond 100.

@jokerdino no need. the 96% is actually a facade, put in place by the TARDIS. So is my profile.
i have 5000% acceptance rates.

nice work

Q: Account merged, now cannot login to SE chat

msPeachyI am not sure if this is the right place to post this inquiry. In AU, I have an old account with only 1 rep which I have used for about a week. I forgot the password for that account so I then created a new account (this account) which I have been using for almost a month now. My old account w...

@jokerdino @EliahKagan @AnwarShah @Mitch: here's my meta answer to the Q we closed, it's CW'd so feel free to edit/add your opinion/whatever :)

A: This question mistakenly flagged as a duplicate, correct?

izxSince it was closed by five independent votes, I doubt it's an obvious "mistake". As one of the close-voters, here's my reasoning: The how-do-I-forbid-update part was addressed extensively in the linked original from the same user The right thing for the OP to do, IMO, would have been to edit t...

@izx i upvoted it. typing out my thoughts

meta.askubuntu.com/questions/3796/… can just change the chat account or what?

jrg
1:10 PM
@jokerdino it's not that simple...

owie

izx
Now, per that FAQ, if that OP were not just "experienced" but an "an engaged user, someone who frequently goes back and interacts with their questions after asking", we probably wouldn't be in this predicament...

I was wondering about that myself - think the devs may need to get involved - @jrg - agree?

@izx don't sweat it too much..

jrg
@fossfreedom let me try one thing first, then we can move to that.

izx
1:12 PM
@jokerdino Nah, but it still nags my conscience...would hate to have wrongly shut someone up, but at least I'm satisfied he got due process...
So, any thoughts on how popular a PPA pkg providing a Unity modded to remove "Show Desktop" from the alt-tab switcher would be?

@izx do note that it is not HIM that is asking for reopening the question..
@izx i would suggest you submit a patch to make it a configurable option in unity itself

@jokerdino agreed - seem to remember a launchpad bug report on this issue - devs said just that.

aha, let me find that report then

jrg
@fossfreedom ok, i'll go ping Aarthi and ask her to get this issue in front of a developer to work his SQL magic. ;P

Hey @jrg
and

izx

@jokerdino Maybe...but I'd have to learn how to get that to read a gconf setting, for example...probably in a couple of days.

Cya @AmithKK

@izx eh. i want to help out on this

izx
@fossfreedom It literally is a one-line fix (removal, not configurability), so I wonder why the dev's have tagged the bug report "low-priority...we have tons of other things to do" and left it as wishlist...perhaps I'll do it anyway.
@jokerdino For now I have something building to address the current AU bountied Q -- get the source and muck around in a couple of hours?

yeah. for the bounty, just build the modified unity. and then we can go for a patch

1:19 PM
Good afternoon all

... I was reading around on this - that icon appears I think on single monitors but does different stuff on multimonitors - appears on one monitor - doesnt appear on another monitor. So may not be "simple"...

izx
How does submitting patches for possible accept go? Just attach it to the bug report and hope for the best?

I almost never have a need to use the 'Show Desktop' functionality. Having it in the alt-tab means when I attempt to quickly alt-tab, I sometimes wind up activating this unwanted functionality. Please add an option (configurable via CCSM, gconf, config files, whatever) to remove this entry from the alt-tab switcher.
Unity
Wishlist / Triaged
@izx make a bzr branch and propose it
well, me or LOT can do that bit as we have bug triager status on LP
additionally, i can nag at the devs in the IRC channel

izx
@fossfreedom Well, when someone says "I want it out of my switcher no matter what" I take them at face value :p (but someone testing it out on multimon would be good)
@jrg Tee hee hee!

1:22 PM
true - would be easier just to suggest using the application switcher instead of the unity switcher.

Q: best web development tools in ubuntu?

MarchosiusI was wondering what is the best web development tools out there? I know about lampp and have this on one of my systems, what I am looking for a great editor. @Mitch: or one of the text editor ones

@JorgeCastro That too

@JamshidHashimi If your modem is DHCP, it will either pass that on OR an internal router will give you a LAN DHCP IP -- why are you setting that interface to static then?

@jrg Good Morning! And what a beautiful morning it is! Especially here in the dark with my computers, all the windows shut and the shades closed.

@izx Thank you so much!

@Mahesh No. I've had my fill of power jargon for life :p Only interested in it if the voltage involved is <=24VDC...

@jrg I lied. I'm not going to open one.

ok, where did Eliah go?

Probably cave-diving ;)

@jrg I'll have you know I'm actually very tan, and @izx that's not a bad idea, I'll order them and have them delivered to me.

jrg
@Flabricorn you'll use amazon.com, like a real bro.

@izx thanks for the 76.54% comment

Or you can order them from the Ubuntu One store, i hear they are going into vitamin supplements. </troll>

@msPeachy glad to know

@jrg Heh, I got a wheely office chair, took out the rug in the room, and now I wheel myself between computers. My laziness just blew away my physical fitness. My only hope now is that my metabolism can handle my diet.

thank you @fossfreedom

Q: Firestarter exits after closing

raul_wI'm using Firestarter on Ubuntu 12.04. I configured Firestarter to run even after closing in the preferences menu. But still it exits after closing. It doesn't minimize to system tray.

OT: Bug?

@LordofTime ... I suspect the guy thinks firestarter is the firewall itself.

@izx AFAIK, skype only needs 1 or 2 .deb files to install, right?

izx
@AnwarShah Well, one proprietary deb is it, yes...

@fossfreedom still a bug

@izx So, I think, tom's OP can only save the file and install it later with sudo dpkg -i skype...deb. Problem solved

1:57 PM
@jrg or really anyone, where is the xorg.conf located?

@AnwarShah yes..
@AnwarShah that's what i said in the comments too

@LordofTime why? - should it minimize? - sounds like its a normal app - it closes when the user says close!

izx
@Flabricorn /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

@fossfreedom it has a "Minimize when closing" feature in it
its been broken in Unity
nobody's filed a bug

brb

1:58 PM
and i also try to dissuade the use of Firestarter
and say gufw instead

@izx Thank you, I would have spent all day looking through /etc/...

@LordofTime that should be the answer then.

jrg
@Flabricorn What izx said.

@msPeachy hi there!

@jokerdino I think, Tom was interested to include an answer for saving .debs from cache and then make a local repo . Though it is not needed. And I think, He didn't understand your comment or doesn't know the fact that, saving skype involves only saving a file, which can easily be reinstalled without creating any local repo.

2:04 PM
I put this into a question but no one responded, but does anyone know how to get this option for the radeon driver working? `Option "ReverseDDC" "boolean"
When BIOS connector informations aren't available, use this option to reverse the mapping of the 2 main DDC ports. Use this if the X server obviously detects the wrong display for each connector. This is typically needed on the Radeon 9600 cards bundled with Apple G5s. The default is off. `

@fossfreedom see my answer there.

@Sathya @izx says I should blame you...

@msPeachy no doubt. blame's always on me

izx
Sigh...looks like this won't be the 10k-month...

@izx Keep editing those posts. You can do it!

2:07 PM
@izx You plan 10k each month !!!

blames @Sathya for PHP not reporting errors back to nginx

blames @Sathya for Indian power-grid failure

izx
@anwar: no, just at least once :)

@izx How much you still need for 10k this month?

izx
@Flab: I wish, I stopped getting reps for edits a long time ago...

2:10 PM
@izx why?

izx
@anwar: 300-ish, I think...

@Flabricorn See this askubuntu.com/users
@msPeachy 2k+ user won't get rep from edits

I am so behind on reputation...
:-(

@izx 30 upvotes?

serial upvoting is detected and reversed by the system, so dont try it. :P

izx
2:12 PM
My real problem is the 200 cap, so no...upvotes won't cut it, need accepts and bounties ;)

@AnwarShah It's just a #, 90% of the work I do on the site doesn't earn me reputation.
4

I am joking..

izx
^^^ what @Jorge said

@JorgeCastro We know you sir.
;P

izx
I'm semi-kidding, so no one go try serial upvoting or anything hazardous!

2:13 PM
@AnwarShah Oh I see, so only users with less than 20K rep, gets rep for edits...

izx
2k...

@msPeachy no, 2k

@msPeachy less than 2k rep gets +2 per approved edit
once they have edit perms they dont get the rep

oh okay,
and what is edit perms?

I knew this, after getting the 2k actullay. hah
@msPeachy edit privilege without needing approval

2:15 PM
@msPeachy The ability to edit without peer review.

izx
I see someone here just upvoted my two top answers...*please* don't do that (reverse!)

Q: Requesting chat rights for other users

ObsessiveFOSSTime to time, I get a new user that is committed to their problem, and I would like to help, but the comment lists are getting very long, which StackExchange apparently discourages. it won't be reversed if it was from another user right?

wait what?

izx
I mean I was almost talking to myself re the 10k statement; no gratuitous upvotes please!

@izx my message was for @msPeachy

@izx Can you closevote meta.askubuntu.com/q/3612/54298 as an exact duplicate?

izx
If that was you @msP please click the up button again to "reverse" :)

2:20 PM
@AnwarShah yes?

izx
@Obs already done...

@izx :P i am just voting randomly...

izx
You shouldn't...

oh . i got it
5 mins ago, by msPeachy
it won't be reversed if it was from another user right?
You mean if it is from you?

2:22 PM
@izx I read your answer of course and I find it helpful, so why shouldn't I vote?

Answer: Yes, serial upvoting from any user, reversed
@izx answer please

@AnwarShah yes, when izx said someone just upvoted his answer I haven't clicked the upvote button yet, so that must be another person.
How do they determine serial upvoting anyhow?

@msPeachy ok ok
@msPeachy many upvoting in a very small time period. AFAIK

@msPeachy if we told you then those serial upvoters will know when to stop... :P

They may have some other methods too

2:24 PM
lol

@fossfreedom I know it. may be
there was a discussion about this matter. but honestly, I didn't understand that
And still do not know.

Q: How can I schedule a daily reboot which won't hang?

cwdI'm responsible for an older web server. Sometime of the applications / daemons use a lot of memory (Java) and it causes the box to get slow and unresponsive. We're working on building a new box, but until that's complete I've found that rebooting the system daily seems to keep it running smooth....

@fossfreedom was just curious, I never voted for answers from the same user within the same day though
is appropriate to include personal details such as emails or tel nos on a question?

never

2:28 PM
you can edit it out

quickly edit those stuff out
before the search engines grab it

okay, got it.

izx
@msP: I meant upvoting randomly isn't a good idea :)

What I meant in randomly, I search for questions with with high votes and read its answers and vote. I then go to unanswered questions and scan through the answers and vote.

that's a good tactic

2:32 PM
@msPeachy I think, this is OK
What @izx meant is going to his profile and voting.. this is bad.

@msPeachy absolutely not, purge it on sight!

@AnwarShah lol, I admit I did go to his profile, and voted but only once. Will vote again tomorrow.

personal information is BAD
you would never put your bank account number in a bug report, for instance.
unless its a private bug report and you fully expect someone to remove it or find it and remove it

izx
@msP: If you have the time, look for questions that have one or more all zero-voted answers, but one of the answers deserves an upvote -- this helps decrease AUs "unanswered a" rate

@msPeachy no, never

2:35 PM
@LordofTime @Sathya yes, got it. Already edited the question.

Come on! One more closevote needed!

@msPeachy I think, One or two is normal. because, I myself sometimes praise an answer, visit the profiles of his answers /questions and when I find more good answers, I upvote. i think, this is a normal process. But this becomes bad when done intentionally and serially. IMO
@izx ^^ am i right?

@izx Okay, will do that. Anything for AU and you :D

A: Can I install Ubuntu to my 32 GB USB pen drive?

Fernhill Linux ProjectHave a look at this guide and video on my website on installing Ubuntu to a USB drive, it will help you do exactly what you want, and it's very simple.

@izx you realized that you've said "love ya" twice already? :P

o.O

what does persistent install means anyway?

izx
@msP: I vaguely remember something of the sort :P
Persistent means a live USB with a specific amount of space set aside to store stuff, changes, etc. that persists between reboots
