hello
He is two questions in disguise on a single question

Q: Does wubi need seperate partition? Can I manually allocate space for my home folder?

Samuil AlexandrovI'm using Ubuntu 12.04, but there are some programs like AutoCAD, SolidWorks and Comsol Multyphysics, that can run only on a Windows system ... I decided to reinstall my laptop, so I will install first Windows XP, and than Ubunti 12.04 again ... My first question is: While installing Windows ...

@AnwarShah It seems like it's really one question. The OP could have worded it, "Do I have to do any special partitioning to install a Wubi system? I'm specifically wondering if I have to set up partitions in a special way when installing the host Windows system, and if I should be creating a separate partition for my Ubuntu system's /home folder.)
Strictly speaking it's two questions, but they're highly related and the accepted answer (which is a more detailed version of, "no, you don't have to do anything special") answers both at once. I don't think we need to do anything about this question.
Thanks, I've edited the title. and I am not going to do anything.
We have missed you last 2 days may be ;P
03:44
where do the screenshot stored after i press Alt+prtScR in gnome
Are they in ~/Pictures?
If not this duplicate suggests that this answer may help.
@EliahKagan yes, they are in Pictures. I have many scshots there, that was the reason of confusion
@EliahKagan I think, We had a plan for discuss something? ;P
04:00
@AnwarShah Yes, I believe that's this. I've re-joined the room.

Q: How do I remove Cinnamon?

AlenToday I installed Cinnamon 1.4 but when I log in to it I can't see any panels, just my background image. Can you tell me how to log in to Unity using the terminal and how to remove Cinnamon?

the question is really about login to Unity when autologin is enabled.. removing cinnamon is not a big problem as describing the title
06:23
anybody here?
@jokerdino about the question above
Oh, I see, there is on one in this room
What am i doing here? and why staying here
@AnwarShah bah don't care.
I can't let him own that title!!
06:34
Also want to flag that question
o/
06:48
jokerdino still around here?
See how's the title now

Q: How can I login to Unity to remove cinnamon with autologin enabled?

AlenToday I installed Cinnamon 1.4 but when I log in to it I can't see any panels, just my background image. Can you tell me how to log in to Unity using the terminal and how to remove Cinnamon?

more realistic, isn't it?
It now becomes a half dupe to this question askubuntu.com/q/62833/61218
@jokerdino u around?
sshhh don't ping @jokerdino
@AnwarShah yeah
I didn't ping you. @Mahesh did
@AnwarShah wrong.
@Mahesh sup
07:01
@jokerdino why?
the question wants to remove cinnamon because it is broken
@jokerdino webapps testing pages were updated earlier?
@Mahesh probably. i haven't checked yet
the extension, iirc, was unity webapps extension, which is what got installed.
so, he wants to log out using the terminal and then remove etc etc
07:02
and i marked the test as passed.
what should be the title, because he also need to get to unity to remove that, and the accepted answer shows, the major part of the problem is login to Unity
now, when i checked, it mentions different ones, and now, FF is ok, but i must file a bugfor chromium.
/me in dilemma..
dont know
@AnwarShah what was wrong with the previous title? the instructions are just fine
@Mahesh ok start over and then check if it works
OK.. I thought, there should be something about the autologin option enabled. Ok, i'll rollback
i am guessing they updated packages and then so updated the testing instructions
@AnwarShah those things can be mentioned in the body
you dont have to mention EVERYTHING in the title
07:07
Ok. solved.
I did that, cause, I saw some edits to include more things on title
you would add things if the title sucks
any way, solved now, thanks
@jokerdino u mean purge and re-install?
Good idea. :D
ppa-purge-ing
07:09
yep
I think, we need good titles like this.( asking this as a general suggestion )
you know what, if you are determined to disagree, don't bother asking my opinion
I was really asking your opinion. and I am not determined to disagree. sorry, if that sounds like that
I am asking to be sure that, "We don't need to add more things on titles." Cause i sometimes do add more things.
6 mins ago, by jokerdino
you dont have to mention EVERYTHING in the title
Terrible..
it wants to remove 226 packages.. :/
07:16
o.O
all my 32 bit compatability libraries, wine, and what-not!
and it wants to leave 224 unmetdependencies after that
your problem. good luck
all of which arecaused by the removed packages, which are NOT from that ppa.
okay, i got an idea.
grep apt history, manually purge the installed candidates, try ppa-purge again.
07:18
@jokerdino you said something about "if the title sucks". that was the reason for re-asking. thanks anyway
it wants to remove all of my desktop and GUI
RAGEQUIT
@Mahesh install ubuntu-desktop after that
installing that will fix any of your problem
@AnwarShah ok
We were agree of the dupeness of this question and I also did a close vote. but it is still opened
@AnwarShah there are lots of 404 not found questions. you can hunt them down and close them as dupe when you are bored
the problem is some are very specific to a package. should i also flag and close those?

Q: This question mistakenly flagged as a duplicate, correct?

Tom BrossmanThis question from an experienced AU member was closed yesterday. I think it was a mistake to close it. The question is clear and the linked duplicate does not fully answer the original. Direct quote from the original: "What I want is not only to forbid the package to update but to save ...

<------------ (always feels boring for several days now)
@AnwarShah actually not a dupe
07:57
hmm..
one is a ppa error and another one is, there is no package in repo
hmm. I answerd to change repo source. a bad one.
yes bad one
it was in my earlier days
thx for the feedback
so, having a wrong answer not deleted is wrong

Anybody here?
How to deal with questions having two parts and both parts individually duplicate to two separate questions?
close it as dupe of first and then insert the link of second one in the dupe box
Referring to the boot splash screen is a duplicate to this one and referring to revert back to lightdm login screen is a duplicate of this questionAnwar Shah 2 mins ago
dupe box means the other options ?
no
the box that is inserted in the question
Oh. editing the question to insert the box?
08:33
Can you check if this is what you said. askubuntu.com/q/129218/61218
no
NOOO!
the auto dupe comment wasn't inserted also.
i said insert it after the question is closed
are you busy?
08:34
you missed the essential part in your answer ;P
fixed now
you don't have to rollback
just manually replace so it does not exist in revisions
i don't expect you to comprehend it. nvr mind
you should have done that before rolling back
and that only works within 5 minutes
@jokerdino which part? (I didn't part)
the manually undoing the edit
so, why you said that? (just manually replace so it does not exist in revisions)
well, just trying my luck
@AnwarShah in case you want to do it in the future
08:41
I knew that, i can edit in 5 mins. but haven't done it until now.
okay good luck
i thought you knew i was talking about the auto insert box when question was closed
and then i thought you wouldn't roll back and just manually replace
well, two mistakes on my part
i knew the second part (though never practiced) but i thought the boxes are auto inserted only by Mods
ok, good that you know the second part
this is the first part - askubuntu.com/revisions/167/6
adding the dupe link box
I saw that boxes sources just before the link. thanks
wait what?
08:47
I mean, i have seen a questions source to see how to format that box
oh okok
next time, if a question is multi dupe, close the question and then add the second link to the box
when i am the first voter, i must wait ? don't i?
so. I must maintain a close voted questions list. thanks
08:50
Is there any other way to see your close voted posts in the system?
you have the list in your profile
ok. ..
got it. I think, the major fault of me is, not exploring the profile completely yet
08:53
You haven't voted yet
well, i don't feel like it
i just managed to not explain something properly thrice to someone now
and that disturbs me

@AnwarShah ok now i get it fully
you suggested edit on that answer last time. it got accepted = you get +2 rep
now, the question got merged ==> same thing as new answer being posted and you editing it after you get the edit priv. so you lose the 2 rep
ok. so, there is no -2 for your question being merged. I was thinking that way after your reply
no, it wasn't

Q: How to find out if Ubuntu is using DHCP

Kevdog777How can I find out if my IP address is DHCP, Fixed or Dynamic? I need to tell my administrator what IP address my VM is using. I know the numbers, but I don't know if it is fixed or not. I have tried: ifconfig and that returned my IP address. Thank you. Edit I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

@izx hehe
Guys - you closed a Q yesterday - can you answer the meta as to why please? meta.askubuntu.com/questions/3795/…

2. how to downgrade skype version

@jokerdino Yes, drafting it right now. Anyone see the irony in an "experienced" ~4k user with a 55% accept rate? <facepalm>
@izx thanks. and o.O
the docs somewhere say that an AR in the middle is totally fine

Q: How does accept rate work?

Troggy What is accept rate? Why doesn't accept rate always appear? How is the accept rate calculated? What does "accepting an answer" mean? How do I do it? Related: How does accepting an answer work? Return to FAQ index
