Q: When I post links to my questions in chat, am I doing it wrong?

Eliah KaganFrom this question I got the strong impression that publicizing questions I've posted, by posting links to them in main chat--provided that it is done in moderation and not, for example, over and over again with the same question--is considered both acceptable and a particularly good way to use c...

I wish there were a way to force submitting quickly upload complaint questions on the site to disclose the ppa. If you can't solve a quickly problem in 24 hours, I don't want to run your package.

jrg
@aking1012 yeah.

@jrg I don't mean specifically that I think quickly is awesome. I mean that if you don't get tired of it after 4 hours and just manually package...

jrg
12:55 AM
Heh.
That only works if you're doing python though.
I do spend 5-6 hours banging my head up against dpkg for my ruby stuff
it really sucks having to write the book on packaging ruby.

THAT I can understand
packaging ruby is a pita

jrg
I mean, it's just another scripting language, this shouldn't be this hard!!
I blame all the python lovers hating on ruby. I should just go use Arch instead. ;P

I think it's about not simplifying things intentionally. If you could just specify $RUBY_SITE/package and forbid binary extensions for "simple", it would be done already. Then you build SEPARATE binary packages that the ones that need binary extensions call as resources.

jrg
Ah, ok.

it's just how i would solve it, surely there are other correct answers

jrg
1:20 AM
I'm going to store my basic packaging on github, that way people can make use of it.

I'm working on a more universal packaging system to sit under debs that works like I talked about the other day to simplify things. If I don't do it, nobody else is going to\
you so didn't need to quote that in AU chat

jrg
@aking1012 have you seen FPM? github.com/jordansissel/fpm
@aking1012 sorry.

np
@jrg that's interesting. bookmarked for later reading when i'm more ready to understand it

Any reason one of these (probably the newer one) shouldn't be closed as a duplicate of the other? While they're different in theory, in terms of how the Update Manager works, and in terms of the answers, they seem to be effectively the same question.

Q: How to stop (or start) update manager from startup

decenterI cannot stop the update manager notifying in the startup. How to disable it from startup? I searched in startup applications, but no update manager is listed. Also not in software sources. I'm using 11.10

Q: How do I make Update Manager stop opening automatically?

user36655Update Manager keeps opening automatically and it's getting very annoying, especially when I'm using Gnome Shell. How do I make it stop?

Hello all
I like to share this with you, I think its interesting. reghardware.com/2012/06/26/extreme_notebook_memory

6:42 AM
@jrg no urgency actually. i can afford to wait for a couple of months even.

6:56 AM
Hello , Good morning everybody
@EliahKagan, Can you look at this askubuntu.com/posts/156311/revisions. I think it's typo for quick edit, should be quickly fixed I thought

@AnwarShah That was definitely a typo of mine. Thx for pointing it out!
@AnwarShah Fixed.

Thanks. I wanted to fix that, But I did not have enough rep and also I did not want to change only a letter. So, I pinged you

8:05 AM
@AnwarShah Thx for pointing it out.

8:57 AM
Anybody knows How can i have a list of all " Bountied " questions in the history of AU?

hmm don't think that might be possible.
it could be available for mods though.

thanks, I am going to ask a question about tag. It is "Creating tag should be more privileged action and also requires approval"?

oh gawd, i got stacktack working on tumblr. i might officially switch to tumblr already.
@AnwarShah hmm while i get your idea, people have a chance to rebut it.
but you should still ask it.
may be on meta.so for more coverage.

thanks. I'll do, Can I get a help with editing ......... (Don't even think it, if you are busy. )

sorta
i should be doing work but i am customizing tumblr :/

9:05 AM
absolutely no idea about this "tumblr"
really interesting one

Q: Why did I earn vote down privilege before 125 reputation score?

Jean-RémyI'm pretty sure, unless I'm unable to show now, that I earn the "Vote Down" privileges before reaching 125 of reputation. Indeed, obtained it at almost 110. I was really proud of myself ( ;) ), seeing notification, and I immediatly went to privileges list. I discovered that I was near 91%, or 93...

???

just read the question.
@aking1012 you have experience with stacktack on tumblr?
i am trying to figure out how to get ask ubuntu to be stacktacked instead of SO
never mind. figured that out.

9:36 AM
@jokerdino, Nice. Can i ask there and answered from AU?

hmm no, it is just loading what is in AU.
and, that is my tumblr blog.

I see , it is broken now. How? why?

check again. i deleted the post.

I was asking about the spectrum, It is still broken

o.O
the spectrum is always broken.

9:40 AM
But you had an unbroken spectrum

don't be too philosophical. :P
i put a un because someone on wordpress snagged it before me.

thanks, I am creating mine, to see what it is ?
not very serious though, only experience

okay.

I'll use the unbroken word, then

hmm

Q: New tag should require more privilege

Anwar ShahI am a relatively new user in Ask Ubuntu site, which is a subsite of Stack Exchange network. After participating in the Questions and answers in the AU site for a while, I see that, the "tags" are very important in this site. (It is also very important on all SE sites). I often see and feel that,...

My harddisk is dying...

ouch

But my question is already dead.....

@AnwarShah Have you read the answers?

@pl1nk, Yes I have read the answer.

I think that I found a bug in askubuntu.

10:34 AM
What bug?!

Only 1 of the 2 upvotes have been counted in askubuntu.com/questions/155584/…

How you sure about that?

@AnwarShah The answer was posted 2 days ago, here you can see that I get only 1 upvote askubuntu.com/users/48864/pl1nk?tab=reputation

Bounty offered: Moving 11.10 complete system to a new bigger Harddisk http://askubuntu.com/questions/155584/moving-11-10-complete-system-to-a-new-bigger-harddisk?atw=1 #harddrive

10:48 AM
I am unable to see 2 upvotes !

what? the question has two upvotes.

Yes, but in reputation, I failed to find 2 upvotes. strange !
I checked the graph, day by day, but still in dark

hmm weird

do you see 2 votes?

yeah

10:53 AM
@AnwarShah Do you see only 1 vote?

May be he voted up within last 5 mins, and since within 5 mins the user can return vote, it is still unlocked,
@pl1nk, yes i see only 1 votes

But with more rep, @jokerdino can see this

@AnwarShah I can confirm that this upvote is > 5 min.

i see two upvotes ..

10:54 AM
That's why I'm wondering if this is a bug..

in which view can't you not see?

Oh. what a fool i am. I wronged with the rep of question
question have 1 upvote= 5 rep
so, he is upvoted twice
there's no bug

yes.

2nd time

dinner time.

10:58 AM
@pl1nk, are you happy now? your question has got 2 upvotes

Sorry, i was confused with upvotes in questions/answers
answer is voted up +10
question is voted up +5

No need to sorry, It is my 2nd time with same error

:)
@AnwarShah btw, I'm always happy :)

What will you feel when you see your answer is accepted by OP, but he forget to give an upvote!!! OH, it happened to me twice.......grrr

It happens...

11:06 AM
Off, this is hard to accept. I'll propose in meta to add a feature, "Whenever OP accepts, an upvote will be automatically given to the answerer."
because he actually liked the answer, only forgets to upvote

11:22 AM
@AnwarShah there then would be no more Tenacious or Unsung Heroes ;)
The latter being hard to get, because people do tend to upvote :)

@Takkat, thanks, But I do not like those badges much. May be I would like them after having enough rep.
It says Zero score accepted answers: more than 5 and 20% of total. , Oh i don't want to have that

There more rep you will get the more precious become the badges ;)

Why?

Because you don't get them so easily. They usually come like a surprise present. Nice.

hello

11:28 AM
o/

I hate surprises, but unfortunately, I got both :(

here comes the unsung hero ;D

Then let it be. I don't need all of those badges

@Mitch how did you manage that without cheating?

@jokerdino :(

11:29 AM
only need 1 gold badge, that's enough for me

jrg
@Takkat yeah, that's what I thought. Then I went and upvoted him.
@AnwarShah NO. NEED MOAR GOLD BADGES.

lol

figured out how to follow someone on Tumblr without seeing their posts on dash board. bwahahaha

so now all of you are going to take your up-votes back :(, then I don't want those badges

it just gets better.

jrg
11:31 AM
LP is taking forever to upload to a PPA... :(

just kidding...

jrg
@jokerdino how long does it take for launchpad to yell at me that my upload is incorrect?

Sorry I said something :)

a couple of minutes at most.
It sends you an email if it is accepted or rejected.

jrg
ok, well then this is weird. it's been almost 10 minutes. :(

11:34 AM
that is weird. LP is down may be?

jrg
must just be the mail server, everything else seems to be working.

is it building in your PPA then?
if it is building, then you should be alright.

@Takkat I don't know, it just happened, and I didn't know what they meant at first, but now...

jrg
nope, nothing there.
meh, i'll go have breakfast and then come back and see what is up. :P

good idea :P

jrg
11:37 AM
(pre-food PPA uploads aren't recommended kids. Don't try this at home!)
3

@jrg enjoy breakfast..

jrg
11:52 AM
Ok, 13 minutes later and I still don't have an email.
I think I crashed LP.

not impossible
Folks on webapps are not generous with upvotes.
oh wait, only two view on my Q&A.

jrg
12:08 PM
@jokerdino seems like there was a hiccup with the mail server, they all showed up at once. ;P

@jrg haha, at least you no longer have to be worried now :D

jrg
that was a lot more painful than I wanted.

yay nice

jrg
now to wait for the debs to be published, then I can do the test thing! :D

12:24 PM
good luck with that ;)

jrg
nice vote of confidence. ;)

:P

Hello all

jrg
does a happy dance
Now to figure out how to include my packaging stuff in git...
@AmithKK hi!

bob
hi, I'm having difficulties to do a svn checkout after a apt-get install svn. The error returned is ou delete, 'Password for '(null)' GNOME keyring:'. I have seen on the web that deleted .gnome2/keyrings might be a solution to this issue. Is it safe to delete that folder ?

12:39 PM
@bob, you can move the folder without deleting. either from nautilus or from terminal. then try

bob
yes that's a solution to test whether the solution works. But assuming it solves my problem, and regardless of my problem, is it safe to delete that folder ?

in .gnome2/keyrings i guess there are your gpg keys stored if you created one. If you did not create any gpg key, I think, it is safe

bob
well it did solve my issue. Any idea why it did, by the way ?
I mean, how is that folder related to svn ?

@jrg Git+Cron+bzr+Shell Scripts?

I find clue from your error message, but I do not actually know how this is related to svn, thanks

jrg
12:43 PM
@AmithKK No.
Pound it into the mud people! :P

1:04 PM
all hail the evil i mean, hi!

Hello @LordofTime

how goes it

jrg
Howdy @LordofTime.

one last form standing. finished most others. phew.

1:19 PM
BBL

1:45 PM
Can you answer this? Is there a cataloging software that links with Goodreads? http://askubuntu.com/questions/124255/is-there-a-cataloging-software-that-links-with-goodreads?atw=1 #softwarerecommendation

jrg
@QuestionsFeed ah! Just what I want.

bob
why is it that tab completion on ubuntu across different versions return different results ? As the terminal been enhanced lately ? For example, svn [tab] used to just show a list of files in the current working directory. But with 12/04, it shows a list of svn commands instead (commit, ...)

@bob That's not a terminal specific thing, it's that packages have been updated to include proper tab completion rules

bob
okay, tthen how can I add the proper rules to my 10.04 ?

Can someone tell me what is the policykit "action" for mounting file system

1:55 PM
You can just copy the files from /etc/bash_completion.d

@MarcoCeppi does that also count for zsh tab-completion?

I don't know

now has a new question to ask

it's from the bash-completion package

13 secs ago, by Lord of Time
now has a new question to ask

bob
1:56 PM
@MarcoCeppi so all I have to do is to install bash-completion ?

@bob no
@bob bash-completion's been defautl since ever

bob
nah it's already the newest version

@bob it's likely already installed

bob
yes

but 12.04 has 1:1.3-1ubuntu8

1:57 PM
you need to take the files in /etc/bash_completion.d from a newer system
and put that in the older one

bob
so then how can I make it so that svn [tab tab] returns commit ?

if i understand what @Marco meant

either that or have someone backport the newer bash and bash-completion packages

bob
well that's not very efficient, I would rather like to know how they got in the newer system instead

1:58 PM
(don't ask me to, i'll light you all on fire with /dev/hell if you do)
its @Sathya! blame the inconsistencies in bash-completion on @Sathya!

@bob they typically come with the newer packages

bob
so can't I just install the newer packages on 10.04 ?

You could but I don't recommend it

@bob what marco said
not until you've had someone test it

bob
ok

1:59 PM
and rebuild the package for the older version of Ubuntu

It would just be better to upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04

although dont count on that

Or, just copy the bash_completion.d directory over

@MarcoCeppi @bob this

bob
then I'll just stay where I am, frutstated that tab completion doesn't work as well as on 12.04

1:59 PM
@MarcoCeppi @bob or this
wait what? oh nevermind

@LordofTime chblame Sathya:Sathya -R /
4

With new releases comes new suger. Gotta either upgrade to get the new hotness or deal ;)

bob
thanks
oops wrong window

@Sathya sudo chblame --recursive Sathya:Sathya /home/askubuntu/failures/*
:P

.
..
Ask Ubuntu General Room

2:02 PM
........... CRAP!!!!!!!!!
glares evilly at nginx failing

@LordofTime Bob typed "ls" by mistake

@MarcoCeppi ah :P

hmm that reminds me.
why am i not an owner of this room? :P

cause you don't idle enough, and all of the owners are actually here ;p

throws tomatoes at @JourneymanGeek

jrg
2:09 PM
@jokerdino because you're not a moderator? I think adding people to the owner list of "the site room" is something that shouldn't be done lightly...

forks the room.
oh wait, i have done it already.

jrg
i think you've done that three or four times.

goes to Multiverse in rage.

@jokerdino fork: Resource temporarily unavailable

@MarcoCeppi o.O

 Ultraverse

Way-out there version of the General Room

2:11 PM
why.

It just happened.
actually, it is for absolutely off topic stuff.
btw, i am looking for a document that I possibly deleted :/

which is what I thought happened in this room :P

@MarcoCeppi most accurate :P

jrg
that was always my assumption.

bob
how to create a directory d1 and inside it a directory d2 in one command ?

jrg
2:18 PM
@bob I do mkdir -p d1/d2

bob
thanks
I had forgotten what was the p option

@MarcoCeppi and now you see why on some sites I'm called evil... see how quickly /dev/hell and /dev/chaos were unleashed?
:P

well, that was an interesting social experiment
3

it ended as I predicted, with /dev/hell and /dev/chaos

Please, Can anybody help me with this "Is it necessary to learn python before using Quickly"? I want to explore quickly

2:26 PM
:P

@AnwarShah Quickly has several templates, but I think it uses Python for most of them

I feel a little idiotic... Just tried both "locate check_http" and "find / -name "check_http" which both came up blank... I found the file manually in /usr/lib/nagios/plugins - is there a reason why both these commands wouldn't of worked?

@AnwarShah you don't need to know Python, but it helps. Try running quickly tutorial ubuntu-application to get started

@MarcoCeppi, thanks, what you recommend?

Running quickly tutorial ubuntu-application

2:29 PM
@MarcoCeppi this

thanks, you recommend to start quickly before learning python.

returns to the less-evil task of fixing nginx

@AnwarShah Quickly tutorial will go through basic Python.
You'll need to learn it regardless of what you do, but it's nice to learn in tandem

@MarcoCeppi, thanks again. It'll help

2:44 PM
@mateo_salta We can blame the outcome on @Sathya
(yes, i'm still assigning blame :P)

hmm
(removed)
3

pinging @LordofTime and then running away. :P

@Mahesh sees the ping, drags @Mahesh to here, and then slaps with a rubber chicken, then lets go.

@jrg .

jrg
@RolandTaylor .

2:57 PM
And that's all.

@RolandTaylor . lies
hey, it returned a true value... XD

its @George
