Q: How close is cdebconf able to serve as a drop-in replacement for debconf?

TechZillaMost of the internet information around cdebconf is circa 06`, or I was just unable to find its location. Please mention if recent documentation, or FAQ, is available. Is cdebconf able to serve as a drop-in replacement for debconf? As of 06` it apparently was not, but it's been about 6 years ...

Hey, check out my remaster. It's beta. I need feedback.

@bambuntu The site is taking a long time to load.

It loaded for me after a bit

I'd show you guys what I was working on right now except IIS is completely borked ATM.

@GeorgeEdison want to see what I've been working on?

Certainly.

It's broken for me.

Do you have a Trello account?

Ah, it only works with public boards
otherwise you'd have to log in
Also, it expects a certain patter of list names (at the moment)

Oh, so it's not just anyone?

1:23 AM
anyone can use it
it's still a pretty rough prototype
eventually you'll be able to map List names to statues

2:02 AM
Love the comment on the bottom of strapello page <3

Computer porn

@MarcoCeppi Er... is that thing actually powering Ondina right now?

ha, no it's new hardware for testing 12.04 setups on
It will eventually power one of the Ondina servers, but i'll be safely stored in a rack in the data center

(Providing the cat doesn't step on one of the cords :P)

@fossfreedom I weighed in

Not seen this before, what is "Serial upvoting reversed" ?

Upvoting the same person over and over.
Somebody just lost a load of rep ;)

So someone was stalking me ;p

yep :D
(wasn't me btw)

OK, thanks, it is not a big deal in terms of rep, was 40, was wondering if I had done something wrong

5:04 AM
:P
Trust me, it's worse when someone carefully downvotes your old answers that are perfectly fine, out of malice.
I've had that more than once...

Ouch , that does sound painful
Down votes can seem somewhat whimsical at times
I've seen what I thought were decent answers downvoted w/o explanation
should I edit out the paypal from this question ? askubuntu.com/questions/111352/…

Of course!
Never let a person offer money (always edit it out). It could be a scam, or they could be scammed.

@RolandTaylor @bodhizazen is there a direct link to donate to Ubuntu other than $25?

@daslinkard not that I know of, no.

so $25 is my only option?

Your best bet is to donate how ever much you want to actual individual developers, or even to GNOME.

How do I find these developers?

@daslinkard if you choose to donate directly to Ubuntu as far as I know, but there may be the possibility to negotiate donating more.
@daslinkard you would need to find a project, then find the project's website, and see if the developer has a flattr or similar method.

5:25 AM
People have donated larger amounts in the past, if you are interested, contact canonical

A good place to look is on Planet Ubuntu, since there are a load of developers there.

+1 to donating to projects you use as well

I'm definitely interested...I donated to Mint when I used it.
Now I'm an Ubuntu man

@RolandTaylor so is that why I should get a blog & post to planet ubuntu? :)

@ajmitch yes ;)
Hook up flattr, and you're all set ;)

5:27 AM
if only I knew, I could be rolling in cash!

Well, more like cents, most likely, but yeah :D

maybe enough to pay for a coffee after a few years :)

Yep :D
But at least it would make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside :D

sure

how long until we get ubuntu 2.7 on precise?
through some hacking I was able to get 2.7.3 but that is way more buggy than 2.7.4
i really want at least 2.7.4
i was able to get the mattheas ppa 2.7.3 oneiric version on here though
i hate 2.7.3 cause it can't save the window layout
2.7.4 fixed that problem
i would compile it from source except I think that would not help my dependency problems
anyone know how to get gimp >=2.7.4 on precise?

11:17 AM
so, you are talking about gimp all along?

@JoshuaRobison I think precise will ship with 2.6 still

yeah, precise still has a lower version

of course it does, cause somebody decided that is stable even though 2.7.4 is much nicer and considerably stable

of course someone else might package it in a PPA for you, if you are lucky

@JoshuaRobison you can always use a PPA, if bleeding edge is what you want you can always get it. 2.6 < stable, 2.7 < testing, 2.8 < stable. those are gimp numbers not Ubuntu
Gimp will not be considered stable and ready for release until 2.8

11:50 AM
@BrunoPereira, o k so which ppa will give me >=2.7.4 on precise

Great answer: Why is a LTS release not using the Extended Support Version of Thunderbird? http://askubuntu.com/questions/110139/why-is-a-lts-release-not-using-the-extended-support-version-of-thunderbird/110141?atw=1#110141 #thunderbird

@QuestionsFeed It is answered.

@JoshuaRobison there is none that I know, beta has landed a week or so ago, you are asking too soon. I am just trying to tell you that Gimp 2.7 is considered a test version, that is why it is not in Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu will only upgrade from 2.6 when Gimp 2.8 is out.

asking too soon?? I have had gimp 2.7.4 on my debian box for months now.
with frickelplatz
matthaeus is usually on top of it but really slacking off this time
but like I said , here it is , finally : ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1923311&page=6
i have just installed it
looking nice on precise

11:56 AM

rant is a rant

Latest version of Gimp on Ubuntu Software Center is 2.6.12-1ubuntu1. Why?

9 mins ago, by Bruno Pereira
@JoshuaRobison you can always use a PPA, if bleeding edge is what you want you can always get it. 2.6 < stable, 2.7 < testing, 2.8 < stable. those are gimp numbers not Ubuntu

the question was not which version was available on software center, but how to get gimp >=2.7.4 on precise
since the usuall ppa's do not have it yet, while debian frickelplatz has had it for months for the debian kiddiez

well, now that you have what you have, peace!

12:02 PM
I installed Gimp 2.7.4 with sudo apt-get install gimp command.
But it is not works.

Q: How to downgrade Nautilus 3 to Nautilus 2.xx?

jasoncruz98I want to use Nautilus Elementary with Ubuntu 11.10, mainly because of the integrated Coverflow effect and Gloobus preview. But I have one problem. Nautilus Elementary is a patch-up for Nautilus 2.xx (whichever version is used in Ubuntu 11.04). This is the link to the tutorial on how to install ...

user26781
I really need Nautilus Elementary 2.32 on my Ubuntu 11.10.

@jasoncruz98 You can't downgrade to Nautilus 2.x since it depends on GNOME2 and GNOME3 is installed on 11.10 and upwards

12:33 PM
i wonder: why does windows call those buttons on the right side 'charms'?

user26781
So, is there a way of removing GNOME 3 and running GNOME 2?

user26781
Would installing Gnome Classic do the trick?

@jasoncruz98 GNOME classic also uses GTK+ 3

haha <3 jorge's comment

12:38 PM
Sigh.

user26781
I am having a heartache?

user26781
I mean heartache.

Oops, wrong place

user26781
No, I mean is there any other way for me to install Nautilus Elementary?

can someone download the tomboy windows installer for me and pass it through dropbox or something?
v1.9.9 if you are going to help. :)

12:41 PM
@jasoncruz98 you had already 2 people answering your question, if your still not happy and have a bit of patience use it and wait a tinny bit more for another answer in the question you posted.

user26781
@BrunoPereira said something in the answer about "You can compile it from source"

@jasoncruz98 that is a no no, I was really trying to discourage you there, use 10.04 or 11.04 instead

user26781
If I wanted to do it, will I be able to do it?

@jasoncruz98 sort answer: no.

@jasoncruz98 The amount of time it would take to compile an old version of Nautilus to run on GTK+3 would far (very far) out weigh the time it took to just install 10.04
like, months

12:44 PM
^ that

Just because GTK+3 is not backwards compatible
Then there's no guartentee that it would even work at the end of all that :)

I have removed the suggestion from the answer, makes really no sense even to speak about it

And then the world ends in Dec 23

In most cases, compiling software isn't a problem, but because of how Nautilus and GTK work together this is one of the corner cases that you can't just "compile an older version"

I would just file a bug against nautilus-elementary and move on with my life.

12:46 PM
@jokerdino is that not the WinRAR trial expiration date?
Elementary will not be further developed

user26781
Thanks very much guys.. I really appreciate it, although I am going to have a grudge on Gloobus Flow and Nautilus Elementary for a very long time.....

@BrunoPereira My Winrar expired already

@jasoncruz98 You could try to contact the author to see if they're updating for GTK+3
it wouldn't surprise me, given a lot of the popular GTK based desktops have all switched to 3

Q: Will Nautilus Elementary be available for 11.10?

ExtenderI'm just used to Nautilus Elementary. Can I install it on Ubuntu 11.10?

Apparently it wont

user26781
what's the difference between UBuntu 11.04 and 11.10?

12:50 PM
11.04 uses GNOME2 and GTK+ 2 libs, 11.10 uses GNOME3 and GTK+ 3 libs

user26781
So, in your opinion, which one is better, Gnome 2 or Gnome 3?

3, but you need something that only exists in 2, so that is not the question here.

user26781
And as i see most applications nowadays run on GTK+3 libs

that is the future, yes

user26781
Will I face a problem running apps on 11.04

12:53 PM
no, mostly everything exists for 11.04 (dont forget updates for it stop this year though)
just dont expect all the latest version of all software to run on it.

user26781
so you're telling me since the latest version of Firefox is running on GTK+3 libs, I won't be able to run ir on Ubuntu 11.04?

I think the issue here is Nautilus running with GTK3 in 11.10 instead of GTK2 as it did, not the other way around

user26781
Will this tutorial work for me if I am running Ubuntu 11.10?

@jasoncruz98 no, that was made in 2010!

user26781
1:17 PM
so if I install ubuntu 11.04 will there be a gnome classic which uses gtk 2 libs?

Hello guys, I downloaded 12 04 beta 1 and it stacks at 'Resizing partition 50%' (it was like this for like 25 mins). What am I supposed to do? Also, is there still the chance to boot from the USB and not directly install ubuntu, but test it first?

user26781
@BrunoPereira if I install Gnome classic on Ubuntu 11.04 will it be GTK 2.0 libs

Quickly is not works on Ubuntu 12.04 beta 1. Why?

@jasoncruz98 we already answered that

1:36 PM
@Oli would like a moment of time

@legospace9876 is it?

i will check later

what command are you trying?

jrg
@BlueXrider Do you need Oli, or will I work for you?

Please answer my question.

@jasoncruz98 gloobus flow is not maintained any longer. I could talk to the developer about bringing it to Marlin, but we will have to wait and see.

I using command: quickly create ubuntu-application my-new-project.

Not sure, it seems to work here

jrg
2:04 PM
@legospace9876 what error (if any) do you get?

probably better to post it on the site, you'll get a faster response from a quickly expert probably

@jrg I go for quantity over quality - eventually I have to get a bite.
@OctavianDamiean once i'm done the usage guide you wanna fork it and revise?
I suck at writing docs.
or anyone who wants a hand in this awesome new project Octavian pushed me on.

I've already forked it, I'll just have to fetch. :)

I can't wait to get the writing out of the way so I can start working on some more code revisions.
then try and get some hype over the library.

Well what's actually left to be done?
In terms of documentation.

2:39 PM
umm... well check out the website. the main page is pretty well done, the usage page is almost done, the demo's page still needs to be done and the about page still needs to be done.
and i'm going to put a page to show the source... if for whatever reason they don't want to goto the github page.
and the entire wiki

wiki just needs to mirror the usage guide, add a few more details in there, then it can be an ever growing document.
