Hey, anyone following my twitter stream don't panic - I didn't commit suicide, I just restarted.
Somehow... Unity is using way less memory, everything is faster, expo has clean lines, Clementine is not freezing when I play music, LightDM looks better.... O.o even Gwibber is faster!

dont lie! no one follows you twitter stream :P

@JorgeCastro is this a conspiracy to make Ubuntu 12.04 more awesome than ever before?!
If so, then you and all other related persons must be thanked, immensely!
(Don't try to escape it either)
Okay seriously...
Something is very right with my system, and I need to find out what it is..
The memory leak in Compiz is gone...

is it possible to not have to run the check from A()?? paste.ubuntu.com/835446
damn, my uri and my link titles don't 100% match.. I got fancy with my UI

Account Information is ubiquitous with Information... this is not good.

jrg
5:37 PM
@RolandTaylor 12.04 is awesome.
2
Because I don't know about any compiz mem leaks.

jrg
@RolandTaylor not noticing any gwibber updates and such.
and the open source ATI drivers on 12.04 are being a champ, because it's running on this huge external display with unity 3D no problem. :D

@jrg it's not an update to Gwibber, or Unity, or anything of the sort that made the difference O.o
I didn't even update my kernel :D
I think it's a conspiracy :P (or the cgroups update that I had today).

jrg
You just did a reboot and zapped your RAM. :P

5:43 PM
had a totally awesome idea for the update-manager

Jorge knows the truth, hence why he didn't reply :D...

Does Ubuntu index thumbnails? http://askubuntu.com/questions/102841/does-ubuntu-index-thumbnails #nautilus

If it is possible then it could reduce the update time up to 50%. :)

jrg
@OctavianDamiean explain?

@OctavianDamiean spill the beans...

5:49 PM
We already know what the package dependencies are when there is something to update.

jrg
Yeah...

So, why not group the packages that depend upon each other and download that group first, when that group was downloaded start installing it in the background why the other group gets downloaded.

jrg
So you're talking about a redesign of apt-get.

Right now we download everything and then install whatever we've installed.

jrg
Because apt-get has a .lock file which prevents that

5:51 PM
Well why not.
It just doesn't make sense.

It makes sense to me. (Octavian's idea).
@lovesh welcome.

thanks @RolandTaylor
i have a small prob regarding start and stop of mysql on m ubuntu 10.10

:P
@lovesh What is the problem, in detail?

it used to work well till yesterday but today whenever i start mysql using mysqld_safe as root user it shows `Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
` and then shows `pid ended`

Did you run any updates or make any changes?

6:00 PM
no

Mysql can be a little fickle.

thats why i am puzzled

Oh okay.
Sounds like a bug then.

well it has been running good for 3 months

Sure it's not something else that is causing Mysql to quit like that?

6:03 PM
well i dont think that but what can cause mysql to quit like that?

A couple of things: a bad database (unlikely, but a possibility), a library (like if you updated dependency of MySQL that broke it), or even a hardware issue (like the hard drive having corruption - also unlikely as the cause, but not something to rule out 100%).
I think you need to trace where there was a change made to the system.

ok
well there was no change but i used mysql administrator to connect to a remote database but mysql administrator was installed 1 month ago
@RolandTaylor i have opened the mysql error.log but cant make much out of it. can u help?
it says [ERROR] Can't find messagefile '/usr/share/errmsg.sys'
now its running as super user so it cant be that it does not have right permissions

6:20 PM
I really don't get this unity hate.
I'm sure Unity will improve and get better and faster. Overall, I think Ubuntu is heading the right direction in terms of usability.

Sorry about that.
@lovesh I'm not sure what that error signifies (beyond a missing file). I would suggest you open a question here.
@ErenTantekin True.

@RolandTaylor yes i am doing it on dba.stackexchange becuse its more of a database issue right?

@lovesh it actually is very relevant to this site.

i ll post a link in this chat. thanks for spending your time

@lovesh You should ask here if it is an Ubuntu server/Desktop, and provide a link to the question on dba.se.

6:27 PM
ok
@RolandTaylor here is the link askubuntu.com/questions/102875/…

@lovesh voted and shared.

@RolandTaylor thanks

@lovesh you're welcome.

6:47 PM
guys I have a UX question...
considering I have 'breadcrumbs' displayed under the main navbar... Do the individual pages also require titles? I'm speaking about the 'Account Information' header under the breadcrumbs.

I'd say yes.
You may find this site interesting.

ok.. these 'template' pages without real world data always look a little off.

yea i'm on it.

6:50 PM
pretty much if there is a SE site for X and I want to know about X I know about the site :P
SE junkie.

nods
You're not alone. :P

wow, that list proves how nerdy I am....
yours is also quite nerdified.

6:52 PM
O.o
My internet speed has dropped to almost 0...

is it important that the link and the page title line up?

@rlemon yes they do - but anyway, this looks NICE!

@rlemon Huh?

you should push the little grey circles a bit to the left too, they peek out a bit

6:56 PM
sweet!

is it offputting that "Change Username Form" is different than "Change Username"

don't hesitate to add a whole lot of margin to everything, especially vertically
@rlemon it shouldn't say "form" at all - you know it's a form

lol, the 'side menu' does not look so pushed out once you see the entire page.
@StefanoPalazzo ok, these little things mess with my head sometimes.

I try to make these titles conversational
here's one I prepared earlier:
> Help us fix the problem more quickly by categorizing it:
(replaces "Tags:")

@StefanoPalazzo what is this for?

6:59 PM
Tagging I assume?

lol smartass

yes, it's tagging for a bug/issue-tracker

how about...
> Yo, where do you want me to file this crap?

@rlemon <3

7:00 PM
that is for the 'underprivileged' developers.

1 hour ago, by Octavian Damiean
had a totally awesome idea for the update-manager

"Congratulations, I am Prince John the Third and I require your urgent assistance with a tagging transaction" ....

I'd like to know what you think.

@OctavianDamiean I think that exists, but that Ubuntu can't deploy it for some weird reason
let me invalidate my memory-cache and refresh it from the internet-repository

Well I know that it is not a new concept but I just don't understand why it would not work.

7:05 PM
guess I misremembered
@OctavianDamiean it would work, but it would be immensely complex
the best you can do (easily) is concurrently downloading the packages at the start, say 5 at a time
well, "immensely" might be an exaggeration. but it'd be some work

Yea that is true, it would require quite a bit of apt-get to be rewritten.

@OctavianDamiean most of it probably - assuming it's entirely sequential at the moment. you'd have to do the dependency resolution, then schedule some threads, locks to keep them from overtaking each other, and make sure the dependencies can't lie to you
I mean, it might well be that a bunch of packages in debian rely on the sequential-ness of apt-get in order to install properly

MY EYES

7:09 PM
after you're done throwing up from watching the first link... you can sit back and lol over the second.

@MarcoCeppi: Have you ever written anything for WordPress (like a plugin, etc.)?

@GeorgeEdison yeah

Oh good.
@MarcoCeppi Are they picky about coding style?

Nope

7:13 PM
Whew!
Thank you.

@rlemon pffffft! Ruby man, Ruby!

lol

Ok, why does World of Goo not work now?

I can envision a convo between Marco, George, and Jrg.

Marco: Haha... PHP. A snippet and a function, end of story.
Jrg: Yeah? Well I'm wearing shoes, bro.
George: That's cute... but I've got the Qt.

You forgot about Stefano.

7:21 PM
He didn't say anything; Pythons hiss :P

Stefano: Meh ... easy Pythonfu.

lolol

I just wrote this a few minutes ago

Hello @Jake.

    def comment(self, issue, comment):
        ''' add comment bro '''
        doc = self.database.get(issue)
        doc["comments"].append(comment)
        self.database.put(issue, doc)
umad

7:23 PM
:P
You should totally add that as a comment there.

umad bro?
heh

Q: No menu option to "switch user" in Cinnamon desktop

the.midgetThe menu has options to lock the screen, log out and shutdown, but there isn't an option that allows me to switch to a different user. Is there another way to do that or, even better, is there a way to add that option to the global menu? I am using Ubuntu 11.10.

Read the comments...
I'm stumped.
I think I'm gonna go have a drink.

(Apparently, I can also fly, lift trains, and eat more hotdogs than the world champion).

7:25 PM
@RolandTaylor assume sarcasm - link to "how do I report a bug" :)

@StefanoPalazzo good idea :D

Anyone need help with anything btw? Since I'm obligated to fix the world's problems, I'll help everyone after I make North Korea a democracy - brb.
:>

@RolandTaylor thanks!

@RolandTaylor I heard China has some censorship issues? I only complain because they're starting to spill over into north america.. so, you know... whenever you get around to it. thanks.

7:29 PM
@rlemon fixing

don't they have a new episode of that today?

XD
BTW, I'll also clean up the space junk, while I'm at it...
/extension of joke off
Anyone else having problems with their internet speed on 12.04 after upgrading packages last night?
(Or this morning)

@RolandTaylor Can you do something about Pluto.. now that he is no longer a planet I think we should be compensated for all of the time we spent identifying him as one..

I saw a message saying OMG DON'T UPGRADE TODAY on g+

Q: Internet slow on Ubuntu but not windows

rlemonI have just installed a dual boot windows7 /ubuntu 11.10 and the internet is much slower than windows. I have read the post here and tried the solutions presented and none have worked. Here is what I am dealing with; In Windows my internet is as normal, nice and fast. However in ubuntu on my n...

7:32 PM
@rlemon lol I'll see what I can do :D

11.10 issue but it might help in your efforts to help others.

@StefanoPalazzo that one affects Nvidia graphics drivers (only the closed source drivers) and only with a specific version of eglibc.

oh okay

@rlemon thanks
I'm guessing it might not be a problem with 12.04 but rather my connection, but I am not 100% sure right now (because both my systems are on 12.04 and got updated last night).

what are you seeing? and what kind of nic?
try downgrading your driver.. that was my solution.

7:36 PM
getting a max of around 14Kbps - but the challenge is - two completely different nics and one system also has wireless as an option

or what kind of phone you got... speedtest has an android app.

and it was fine this morning until I restarted
@rlemon s40 :(

qwerty?

(Nokia and their "s40 touch and type" nonsense :P... should be symbian - cause it has a 680Mhz ARM processor!!!)

there are a few s40's listed on my search result.

7:37 PM
X3-02

flash work?

try to speedtest from your phone wifi

I'll give it a shot

it will be slower than desktop obviously.. but should only drop 10-20% depending on your phone.

7:38 PM
@RolandTaylor I've got a problem with one of those maybe you can help?

@StefanoPalazzo sure
@rlemon 1 sec

@RolandTaylor I want to wipe it clean, but I don't know if that'll wipe the map-data as well. I can't find the ovi maps anywhere as a download
nokia seems to have shut down everything to do with Ovi

@StefanoPalazzo do you have Nokia Suite?

I guess I could install it, I've got a windows VM

If you do, you might be able to wipe map-data from there.
Only problem is, Ovi Suite has some quirks with USB on a VM.

7:41 PM
ah, I want to wipe everything except the maps :)

Ohhhh

I tried doing the factory reset from the menu (not the proper hardcore one), but that left me with a pile of email and texts

I think you might be able to do it from Gnokii on Ubuntu, but I'm not 100% since I have not tried that

gwhatnow? fires up the google

lol
it's in software center :P

7:43 PM
oh that looks cool

@rlemon flash doesn't want to work :(... Stupid "flash lite" junk

maybe I can just wipe the text and email there, that'd be all I need. thanks! I'll try that

that sucks..

@StefanoPalazzo this is a Symbian phone btw?

yes, it's a C5

7:44 PM
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
My bro has a C5, and I was going to get one myself :P

it's a lovely phone (has some issues)

You may be able to access the filesystem from Ubuntu using psion (I think that's the name)
Yeah, I wish I had one :P
But the day I went, it was out of stock :(
and my old phone was in urgent need of the trash
:)

@RolandTaylor there's a bit of a hitch with the C5. Since nokia abandoned Ovi, some of the "cloud" stuff doesn't work
like email, calendar, contact syncing, updates for maps, I could go on
damn you nokia

What are you planning to do with that thing?

so the features will still work, just not integrate with Nokia's web services

7:46 PM
Want to sell it?

I'll give it to my dad

I see, what will you get?

once the embarrassing texts are all deleted :D
@OctavianDamiean a "thank you", I hope? ;-)

@StefanoPalazzo it's even worse for me, because the X3-02 is somewhere between smart phone and feature phone :S
@rlemon 12.04 is cleared - the problem is either my ISP or the modem

eh? is that not pretty much the same thing?

7:49 PM
Not really
Symbian is officially a Smart Phone OS (can multitask for example, has Qt, etc)
s40 touch and type is like a detuned copy of Symbian :S

I <3 nokia phones, they're just prettier

I want the N9 >:]

you know,
you could probably pick up a used N900 for just a wee bit more than the C5 on ebay
that's running gtk and everything

OK Guys! when you have an add/edit/delete/view option for an item (blog, article, note, links, ect) and each will require a 'view', for separation should I create a separate page for each or just one add/edit/view page with a lot of php checks..

oh yeah!

7:52 PM
@rlemon create a separate page, unless you integrate the functionality somehow. I often just put the content view and edit form beneath each other, hide the form with javascript, and show it when you click the edit button

@StefanoPalazzo Heh, I meant what phone will you buy?

two lines of jquery, 100% customer satisfaction :P

@StefanoPalazzo yea that wont due.. I don't want edit and view on the same page.

@OctavianDamiean oic :D My sister gave me her old iphone a while ago

<div>Item Name: <?php echo isset( $item['name'] ) ? '<input blah blah />' : '<span> blah </span>'; ?> </div> <- this is what i'm trying to avoid..

7:54 PM
@rlemon right. definitely separate pages then. just make sure to use one base css plus separate stylesheets for all your views, then it'll be very easy to maintain
so it'd be "views/page.html" "views/css/page.css" and "assets/base.css"

welp.. looks like it's gonna be
views/blah/add_item.php
views/blah/view_item.php
views/blah/edit_item.php
Im actually quite pleased with my recent CSS code... 99% of it is reusable.. i only need one css file for the most part.
I try for very generic class rules that can be stacked together to create nice effects.

when can we take a look at the site? :)

Ok, what the hell? Flash broke after the last update. :/

@StefanoPalazzo it's for work... but it is/will be open sourced.. so you'll be able to fork it once i'm done.
Shipping / Sales / Inventory management system.

I'll just steal a few things from your design work <3

8:06 PM
lol, have at'er
@StefanoPalazzo gist.github.com/1688928 apple-esk menu bar
I think the only change I added from that version was the shadow.

cool
@rlemon by the way, there is <nav> element that you can use instead of <div class="menu"> (<nav> for navigation, <menu> for controls like "edit", "delete", ...)

never-mind.. apparently I made a lot of changes.
I know.. but I am always hesitant to use new elements until I can be 100% they're going to be picked up by all browsers.
a lot of the HTML5 elements I will not use until IE9 becomes the earliest IE I have to support. (i'm paranoid)

are you supporting IE6? I'm 80% sure they'll work in ie7 if you add "display: block"

@StefanoPalazzo and i'm 100% sure that <div class="menu"> is supported in all versions :P

jrg
Sweet light-themes update - hope that fixes all the problems I've been having lately. :P

8:11 PM
fair enough (:

it's a matter of personal choice.. so I don't have to test/worry I choose the older method.
I would love to use <header> and <footer> tags..
<article> <section>

new blog!
who rocks at nginx and wordpress!

jrg
oooohhhh jekyll.

You know what @JorgeCastro? You're really mean!
I thought that I can catch up on the edits and then I realized that I misread your edit count for this quarter. 1090 edits ... that is sick bro!
2
I was all like, Oh awesome, 109 edits. Five seconds later. FML WTH!?

8:31 PM
Back

@jrg jekyll looks badass

@JorgeCastro edits with a quad core hand-cessor.

I don't know, I guess he has a twin or something.

I was actually ahead of him this quarter... until he logged in!
2

He is the collective.
@BrunoPereira LOL!

8:33 PM
hehe

I was so proud man, 1 full day of editing / sc2 gaming.

1st hour he caught my edits score, 2nd hour he humiliated me by tripling , 3rd one he laughed and showed me the light: "its just a number" he said, "and I, @JorgeCastro am awesome, just like the Kung-Fu Panda!"
^ true story
I stopped caring about the number after this! (actually I do look at it, but try to imagine Jorge is not there)

Can you answer this? Random images appearing in my home dir... Where are they coming from? http://askubuntu.com/questions/17087/random-images-appearing-in-my-home-dir-where-are-they-coming-from #home

If you already thought that this was sick then take a seat now. He has 10,719 revisions in total!
