I have a NEC powermate p5050 desktop 2gb ram amd turion and nec versa s7100 1gb ram intel core 2 duo
a bit light on ram but shouldn't be two light...
user19161
I run the 32-bits which is supposedly faster since I don't have 4gb ram or do video editing.
jrg
jrg
so your specs are better than mine.
Not sure about the Turion...
user19161
Both are 64-bit processors.
21:03
what speed?
user19161
And I take very good care of them, they look brand new.
I have a intel core 2 duo btw
64bit OSs are faster regardless of how much RAM you have or if you do video editing.
@RolandTaylor that isn't always the case
user19161
@RolandTaylor Really? I show you this post.
21:03
it will only be faster if the software takes advantage of it.
If the software is 64bit as well, then it is faster.

Q: Hardware to install 64-bit OS

Chethan S.If I search on Internet for minimum requirements to install a 64-bit operating system, Microsoft and allied forums recommend 4 GB RAM as the minimum criteria. On the other hand, when I look at Linux communities and say I have Dual Core Processor and 2 GB of RAM they say it's a 64-bit processor an...

@RolandTaylor there, that is better :-P
user19161
So after reading various posts on the internet I decided to stick to 32-bits.
although ubuntu makes it impossible to install 32bit software on a 64bit OS
21:05
@JasperLoy that post didn't prove me wrong :).
user19161
@RolandTaylor I like caleb's answer.
@JasperLoy Up till yesterday, Phoronix had an article on why you should go 64bit.
user19161
@RolandTaylor Show me.
I'll try to dig it up, gimme a sec
21:06
@OctavianDamiean you have never tried to isntall 32 bit deb on 64bit Ubuntu?
@TheX I successfully did.
it will give you some error "32bit software not supported by this architecture" or something like that...
user19161
You just need to install the 32-bit libraries for it to work.
Well not a deb.
21:07
But software.
@TheX not anymore
@RolandTaylor really?
yep
On 12.04, it uses multiarch, so it will just install like nothing happened.
There you go again... showing off and making me feel retarded :P
user19161
@RolandTaylor Well hardware there is 4gb ram. :-)
jrg
jrg
21:09
@RolandTaylor heck, on 11.10 it uses multiarch.
@jrg oh yeah that's true too
user19161
You guys know that when you install acroread on 64-bit ubuntu it is installing the 32-bit version right?
In general, if you don't have more then 3.5 gbs of ram, then you don't need 64bit OS
@JasperLoy yes, but you don't need 4GB RAM to use a 64bit OS
jrg
jrg
and 11.04 started having 64 bit stuff.
user19161
21:11
@RolandTaylor I am just thinking for 2gb ram it might be faster with 32-bit.
And realistically, you should have more than 2GB of RAM if possible, unless your processor cannot support it.
It might, but only for a few operations.
user19161
But I tried both and there is no noticeable difference in speed.
@RolandTaylor clearly the more RAM the better off you are :P
@TheX I don't see why someone who can do better would choose not to, to be honest
@JasperLoy well, fair enough - but one parting shot - 64bit is more secure :)
@RolandTaylor I have a few ideas... like maybe they can't afford computer upgrades like you :-P
21:13
Ha! I won!
@TheX who said I could afford them ;)?
@RolandTaylor I mean not everyone has qaud core processors...
My system came with 4GB of RAM, and still has it...
and 18gbs of ram
@TheX D:! SHOW OFF
I see what you did there...
jrg
jrg
@TheX SHOW OFF D:
21:14
I only have 4 gbs of ram for the record
and a 1tb hard drive...
and a quad core processor...
and more than one desktop...
shhh :-P
hey the other desktop is used for XBMC

Q: The future of meta.stackoverflow and meta.stackexchange

Jeff AtwoodHistorically this site, meta.stackoverflow, has been the place to ask questions about not just Stack Overflow, but the functioning of the entire Stack Exchange (2.0) network, including Area 51 and stackexchange.com. (Yes, there was a meta.stackexchange, but that dealt with the old legacy Stack E...

2
YES!!
21:15
@TheX lol :D the rest of us have to use XBMC on our laptops :(
I mean really, who can afford to dedicate an entire desktop to XBMC...
XBMC does look nice on my tv...
D:
yeah, rub it in.
I have a Zotac for XBMC
it was like $300
21:17
@JorgeCastro joins in the rubbing
XD I love you guys :D
@JorgeCastro I actually can't afford it...
I am just as poor as the next guy...
I have not laughed this much in a long time
the extra desktop was free...
someone gave it to me, because it wasn't working... they rashly went out and bought a new one...
<--- takes note of @jrg's silence
all I had to do was replace the PSU, and add some ram I had laying around...
21:18
(he must be laughing at us mere humans, with our desktops...)
jrg
jrg
Oh heck yes we're going to get meta.SE
@RolandTaylor i'm not laughing.
@jrg I can feel it!
@jrg is a Vulcan... btw...
^tis true!
He will eventually destroy us...
jrg
jrg
21:20
I do not feel emotion. I simply "am".
He killed me once, but fortunately I had an extra life in my pocket.

A: The future of meta.stackoverflow and meta.stackexchange

George EdisonThis is excellent news and I've been waiting for this to happen for quite some time. However, I do see one huge problem that will need to be addressed in some way: Dead links. Google has indexed millions (well, hundreds of thousands anyway) of pages here on Meta that have been around for years....

Okay seriously, why don't they just flag "The Bridge"?
Meta.SO is dying.
Oh... I see I am too late. Somebody beat me to it :P
He clearly does not care that he killed you and failed...
21:24
Oh, he didn't fail, the Vulcan death grip was highly effective :D
However, I'm not very good at remaining dead...
Yes but he failed to check your pocket for extra lifes...
jrg
jrg
@RolandTaylor Just wait until you see what happens in the serverfault room... thats not really friendly. :P
Almost done backing up my old Ubuntu partition - then it's simply a matter of doing some partitioning >:)
jrg
jrg
no flags, but its not really friendly most of the time.
@TheX lololol
@jrg I guess sysadmins are all sailors ;)
21:31
@RolandTaylor got your house cleaned yet?
jrg
jrg
@RolandTaylor No, just professional IT people.
I hope those aren't my last words :P
@jrg lol you missed the hidden meaning :P
@TheX did what I could lol. Not much to be done really.
...and it's gone!
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison Just don't do partition when half asleep, you'll be fine.
21:32
@RolandTaylor then your house must be cleaner then my pig sty... need to talk to the wife about that...
@jrg I'm okay - it's just barely lunch time here.
jrg
jrg
@RolandTaylor I know what you're talking about.
Ok, good for you then.
Part 2 - resizing an NTFS partition.
[Gulp]
jrg
jrg
stop wimpering and get it over with! :P
@TheX there is room in the basement. Btw I was thinking about getting a dog house...
21:35
Cock the hammer, pull the trigger
Okay - I'm hoping for the best. Restarting with the Live USB installer... stand by...
If I don't make it back, this is the link to the StackApplet 1.6 installer for Windows.
@RolandTaylor why a dog house? there are two rooms in the basement...
@GeorgeEdison StackApplet doesn't work on Windows 8 :-(
21:55
0.0
Its the worst
@TheX Impossible - I just ran it on Windows 8 myself.
Does the installer work?
Do you get any error messages or anything?
I am running Firefox off the LiveCD right now... man that thing's fast!
Launches gparted...
I like stackalert better
You won't when StackApplet is done - it already has more features :)
For example, you can mark items as read even though the API doesn't support that.
(StackApplet keeps track internally of what you've read.)
Done already...? That was fast. Thanks gparted!
Okay, gotta restart again guys. Hopefully everything is safe back in Windows land.
:D windows...
22:08
so, does stackapplet run on windows 8 yet?
:P
@GeorgeEdison did resizing ntfs work? i spend some hours shouting at my computer after trying to do that... :D
best thing: defrag with windows, chkdisk in windows, then resize with gparted and hope for the best (on success, again run chkdisk from windows).
@htorque Yeah, defragmenting beforehand helps.
@htorque It should - I've been doing it.
Let me try installing it with the installer...
Wow... time is ticking... the API contest ends soon and I need StackApplet to work!!!
22:28
ah, time to use a nice batch of 24 close votes. >:)
@TheX: I really need to know why it doesn't work.
boom, out of votes. amazing how rarely i disagree with close votes.
22:44
good night!
@htorque gn!
I need help!!!!
jrg
jrg
23:22
@Allan still need help?
blech, windows failed, leaving me with a wonderful loading loop. I think I'll just shutdown, boot to my recovery CD and do the recovery dance, again. :\
What's up room?

Few changes to the Cleanup...
- Batch size (how many you get at once) is now 5, (was 10)
- Max-open is now 20, (was 30)
- Max-per-day is still 50
- And allocations expire after 3 days (was 7 days)

When is the best time for the chat room?? Meaning, a lot of people on here chatting?
randomly everyday, its just a quiet moment I think
It seems that way when I log in...typically where are the users from? I'm in the U.S. in Alabama...
Netherlands
What time is it for you? 5:55pm here
almost 1 in the morning
23:56
LOL...that could be my other problem....I'm logging in the afternoon for me....but all my other Linux peeps....are asleep
@GeorgeEdison let me try again on another computer

Yeah I don't know where everybody is.. It's usually a bit more busy around this time.
Can you answer this? Alternative printer driver for Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b? http://askubuntu.com/questions/98016/alternative-printer-driver-for-fuji-xerox-docuprint-p205b #printing
Contest ends in 2 minutes.
@TheX Thank you. I also updated the installer, so if you could please be sure to download it again, that would be great.
I downloaded the link you sent before is that the one?
