Q: NFS server causes high load even when idle

Giuseppe VacantiI have an Ubuntu (12.04) NFS server that has a high load (larger than 10) even when nothing is running. In detail, the storage is provided by an iSCSI device, on which I have 5 logical volumes (LVM) and some etx4 partitions. Even with all services stopped, and no exports (that is no client traff...

2:12 AM
@jrg are you still around?

jrg
@iSeth sup?
@Flabricorn: long email sent to you.

@jrg I was just wondering what you do about questions flagged as 'too localized'?

jrg
@iSeth close as too localized. (most of the time)

I see my flags marked 'helpful' but nothing happened... at least not yet
nbd just wondering
hrmm, they where about 18 of them

jrg
idk, i can take a look tonight while I'm waiting for Santa at the bottom of the chimney with a flashlight and camera. ;P

2:24 AM
@jrg its ok. (don't be surprised if you catch Snoopy take the cookies)

jrg
nah, i'll take a look. i remember i got really pissed at marco for declining all 5 of my flags in a row once. :P

Wow, that would be discouraging.
they weren't declined, just nothing happened to the question.
(the whole reason I did that was to help raise our answered rate)

@jrg but you got over it...........HOW YA DO'N puppet-boy

@jrg I did it, I passed @RickGreen-Turbo by two. :P

2:45 AM
Oh Hell no...
@iSeth you sure did, Congrats Man
@iSeth I ran out of votes about an hour ago, so take the rest of them too. Blistered all 40 today.

@RickGreen-Turbo :D
I'll keep an eye on them. I know its boring when you run out of votes :(

I know then i go back and start to answer questions
make off-comments and such

I try to answer them when I can. Not many I can do yet.

Here's a pro-forma for ya: Do you have no real question here...its more or less just a post to bitch about the changes in Ubuntu. You didn't do any research before asking and no, there is no excuse for poor English.

haha, yeah, that covers about 80% of them.

2:55 AM
One more: It is preferred if you can post separate questions instead of combining your questions into one. That way, it helps the people answering your question and also others hunting for atleast one of your questions. Thanks!
now thats 90%

oh, I hate it when they don't read the FAQ..
or any other text on the site for that matter

Oh yeah, same questions over and over. No research on the op's part and then a long dissertation about nothing pertaining to the question.

not to mention all the comments on what should have been in the question at the start
it almost enough to make me start pulling hair out !!

yes sir. hoorah!

and then you have to search the site for the dupes... then flag and comment...

3:01 AM
BTW. you been rock'n lately

Q: Where is my boot loader? Installing windows 8 from ubuntu

user1893354So I have ubuntu on live USB and I installed Windows 8 via CD. When installation was done, I restarted without the CD (and went into bios and selected option to boot via hard disk), but nothing happens i.e. I have no boot loader, I just have a blinking cursor forever. So I went back into ubuntu...

This smells of dupe.

I searched, but couldn't put my finger on it.

jrg
Yeah. Came up empty here too.

3:55 AM
@iSeth I thought usb booting was only for the live cd's (which means he needs 256 MB of ram for xubuntu), anyways my pentium 3 setup certainly does not have USB booting capability.

There's something wrong with the motherboard
@mateo_salta -_-

3:57 AM

The thing won't startup
so, I'm back to amith-desktop on integrated graphics

where does it fail?

I don't know
the CPU works

do fans turn on, lights, ect.

The RAM works
Fans and lights turn on
There is no beep from the board
and the Keyboard or Mouse does not light up

3:59 AM
have you swapped power supplies

No VGA output
@mateo_salta That's the only thing I didn't try
But this PSU works on this computer
so, should'nt it work there?

hm, so the PSU is known good.
try unplugging everything(peripheral wise, even CDrom, usb) but the screen and turning it on

Done
still broken

So, people on quantal and raring can use Mechanig from the daily PPA if interested.

You did it! @jokerdino

4:02 AM
Wait, I need to make sure the latest one builds.

Sorry I could not do it

@AmithKK sounds bad...

@mateo_salta They'll replace it

He wrote the setup.py file along with other structural changes.

@jokerdino wow, you did a good job

No, he did the job. I just debianized it.
ok let me go off for breakfast. Let me know if the build fails or something.
And merry Christmas everyone!

Ah, Merry Christmas to everyone

Merry Christmas!

Heyheyheyhey I just found out my tablet as a dual-core Tegra 2 processor! Can I expect an install app like what has been done for the Nexus 7? pleasohplease~

8:40 AM
@Mochan You need to build it :)
I could aid you
I'm a bit busy
:P
> Problems with Tegra2: various important bits such as power management, sound and GL are provided by a user space daemon. This daemon only works with the kernel and X11 it was compiled against. Meaning unless Nvidia provides us with builds, there is no way of ever sensibly supporting this.

@AmithKK What would I need to know to 'build' one? Must I learn a language or have some type of knowledge?

@Mochan You can't
3
you need to be working at nvidia

@AmithKK Never say never //shot
@AmithKK What ever happened to HACK ALL THE THINGS!!! ?

JB reference :?

@AmithKK No, normal reference. But I figured you would suspect that, so I shot myself after saying it.

8:43 AM
@Mochan Well, can you hold the nvidia guy at gunpoint and ask them to make everything open source

@AmithKK Hm. Not a horrible idea. What about it? You and I, to tickets to [insert office's town's name here] and we can destroy nVidia. As Linus once said, "FUCK YOU NVIDIA"
2

@Mochan Check in the Trim Slice sources
@Mochan Nah :P
They probably have something to do with the FBI

@AmithKK Pansy T_T
@AmithKK Hack the FBI, duh.

@AmithKK ~(o__o)~
@AmithKK, why can I not just delete everything on my tablet and just put Ubuntu in it? T____T

8:52 AM
It's not that easy

I know. Why can't it be... ;_;

Merry Christmas, everyone!
8

@GeorgeEdison Merry Christmas

@GeorgeEdison Seasons greetings, @GeorgeEdison!
@AmithKK What do I do...? Lend me your guidance T__T

@Mochan Well... Give me a few minutes

8:59 AM
@GeorgeEdison that was yesterday! :P

@AmithKK Thanks :3
@htorque O.O Where are you?!

I think the term Kernel Panic goes both ways... for the PC ans well as the kernel developer... :(
or noob developers ...:(

@Mochan xmas is celebrated on the 24th in most of europe :P

@Mochan Which tab?

Ubuntu on a tab... I was thinking the same thing yesterday! well, actually I was thinking of a phone but still close

9:08 AM
@htorque O_O
@AmithKK Acer Iconia A500

One thing... Ubuntu is not built for tabs... one would need drivers for the touch input and stuff... is it feasible?

Architecture schmatictecture... I hate it...

@AmithKK No. Seems interesting. But that's 10.10... does that mean 12.10/12.04 will be beyond my wildest dreams?

@Mochan ... ah, I see...

9:45 AM
@ArslanW ?!

@Mochan yep

@jokerdino Shh! Don't be a pessimist. Even though I did kind of ask for it.

Hey, has anyone even talked to Jorge Castro, like, in chat?
@AmithKK -____-

@Mochan yeah once in a while

9:47 AM
@jokerdino Huh. Man, he didn't reply to me. //cries

He won't unless absolutely necessary. Why did you ping him?
btw @AmithKK, are you on 12.10?
or 13.04?

@jokerdino Neither
I want to keep 12.04 till I get the new motherboard to work

dude, you promised to upgrade like 2 months ago.

@jokerdino Yeah, Sorry :(
I have the ISO on my pendrive

@jokerdino He came on chat (probably to mod) and I said "Hi [@]JorgeCastro" but he didn't even "o/"

9:50 AM
that's what I'll run when I reach to kerala
@Mochan He is not a mod

I checked out the chroot link.... one thing... if I try it on my galaxy s2 phone, it should not harm my phone right...? just in case things go bad...

@Mochan haha, he won't respond to that.
> He won't unless absolutely necessary.

@Mochan XD

@AmithKK alright..

4:41 PM
@iSeth there was a script on one of the ubuntu-y websites that grabbed that data
here: webupd8.org/2010/12/launchpad-finally-gets-ppa-usage-stats.html although i'm not sure how well it works

OK, good.
They're still dupes though.

this is true, but there is a "better answer" than "bug"

well, it is a bug. Or rather a feature request, but that script should be mentioned.

yeah. there's a discussion on how to get "real" stats. that's the open bug. as far as general stats, they're available. so i think a perfect answer should probably touch on both. "these are download stats, not unique users" etc etc
also: phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTE2OTY blender now runs on android...huzzah

YAY BLENDER!
starting to think it'd be faster just to toss this file on a USB stick than to move it over the network.

probably would.
I notice that USB 2 transfers are actually faster in a USB 3 port.. which I find interesting.

jrg
yeah, 8MB/s vs 500KB/s. :P

big difference :P
now, how to share a 900MB file with a non-technical person? i.e. no torrent?

jrg
USB stick?

torrent is technical?

5:04 PM
@jokerdino on this occasion yes.

I suppose that means time for nap.

@jrg prob. just mail a cd DVD (its gotta go out of state)
@jokerdino Cya Then!

Wait!! I have an idea... Skydrive has a 300MB upload limit, but if I do it through the software it bypasses that... genius.

jrg
@jokerdino cya.
@iSeth that could work. dropbox would work too.
that was easy. i just plugged in my USB stick, walked downstairs, and was done in about 5 minutes.

5:09 PM
well, I already have Skydrive.. no dropbox
@jrg but now you have to do it again

jrg
@iSeth no.

oh, I thought you where moving a file between two computers.

jrg
yes.

ok, I'm lost.

jrg
moving a file from laptop to server.

5:12 PM
@iSeth dropbox or sendspace

sendspace would work, but I'll just use Skydrive.
if Ubuntu One gave me as much space, I'd switch to that as it has better platform support.

Any 13.04 users out there?
I've got a bug I need to get some confirmation on.

@RolandiXor-TheIceMan if you wait until April/May... :P

No... lol
It needs to be fixed if its a real bug, BEFORE April/May...
It's a pretty annoying one.
What happens is that mp3 files cause music players of any kind to freeze after playing them or when attempting to play them O_o

@RolandiXor-TheIceMan that's a bad bug :/

The worst part is, I can't seem to find the cause O_o
Even strace is silent on it
And even VLC is affected by it lol

that's pretty weird... can you play other audio files?

6:43 PM
Yep
The mp3s play - in most cases, but once they finish the music player sticks
and the only way to kill the player is to use killall -9
:O

O_o

It's weird...
it can switch if I switch manually, but not if it does so automatically D:
Oh well - it's Christmas day so I'm off to do other things
hopefully someone will find this and help me
so I can report the bug against the right package

Ok, @RolandiXor-TheIceMan see you later!
