8:01 PM
@Flabricorn morning.
er, afternoon. whatever

8:13 PM
@jrg mateo is here if you're going to ask for that grinch photoshop ;)

jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing oh, didn't see him.

@jrg Morning.
@jrg Or 3:30... whatever.

jrg
@Flabricorn how are things going?

Great, I just put in a new rug and when fitting it under the table, the coffee maker fell and stained the rug. Coffee maker was not damaged.
Also, trying to make pixel art.
@jrg The fruit of this morning's labours. i.imgur.com/blJdp.jpg

jrg
oh well.
pixel art?
@Flabricorn that looks like you.

8:28 PM
@jrg I'm really only upset with the background, the gray doesn't fit.

jrg
yeah
battleship gray sucks

I'm getting photoshop, it's just with anything I do, it's a process.
And Paint.Net is not a pixel art platform.

Hello~

@Mochan Hello!

@Flabricorn Photoshop, ahhh the memories!
o/

8:32 PM
@mochan Good memories?

jrg
@Flabricorn use pinta. ;)

@Flabricorn Yeah :3 I used to love my Photoshop while on Windows~ good times~ (avid artist XD)
Wine won't run Photoship though (FWIW)

@jrg Actually Pinta looks a lot like PDN, but Pixelmator will be my weapon of choice...

@Flabricorn What exactly are you trying to do?

jrg
@Flabricorn ah, yes.

8:36 PM
@mochan Pixel art, learning for GGJ 2013
(Global Game Jam)

jrg
oh, you're doing GGJ?

Is it weird when I look at Flabricorn, I think of Fabicorn == Fabulous Unicorn ? =u=
@Flabricorn Cool :3

@mochan Actually Flabricorn == Fat Unicorn.

@Flabricorn XDDD

@jrg Yup, on the boat this year.

jrg
8:39 PM
@Flabricorn whats the date?

@jrg Sometime in January, dunno the specifics. You should do it.

@Flabricorn I don't know much about it. Do you just... design a game or something?

jrg
@Flabricorn ok, i'll look into it

@Mochan Worldwide (Global) people come together into teams and compete to make an amazing game in 48 hours.

@Flabricorn That's awesome! How many are there in the groups?

8:43 PM
From two to however many people you want! You can also work alone if that's easier.

@Flabricorn that is so hilarious

@AbrahamVanHelpsing It's pretty swell.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Hi~ :3

The game I worked on last year: archive.globalgamejam.org/2012/orbrs
I think there's a prize, but I don't think anyone from where I was were really competing for it. @jrg This was written in CSS3... incredibly clever game. archive.globalgamejam.org/2012/wrrrm

@Flabricorn Cute graphics

8:54 PM
@Mochan Not me, our artist was amazing. abitfrank.com

jrg
@Flabricorn whoa
that's slick

@jrg Everyone on our team was amazing.

@Flabricorn Very nice. I envy her(?)

@Mochan Her, yes, but all the games we saw were pretty swell, the majority was Windows or Mac, I don't think there was one Linux in the airport.

@Flabricorn Wah :( She's an excellent artist

9:01 PM
@Mochan Which is why I'm learning Pixel Art, because I think her art skills bypass "The Sheeps" (Our team name from 2012) game making skills. In which case she will probably not be on our team this year.

@Flabricorn Awesome. Good luck.

@Mochan Thank you.

o/
Man is it ever quiet today.

@GeorgeEdison Quiet as the vacuum of space.

In other news... I have written (yet another) web server in Qt. You can see it here: home.quickmediasolutions.com:8000

9:09 PM
@GeorgeEdison Congrats :)

:P
Hang on, I'll be back in about 30 seconds - I need to plug in another monitor...

I'm going now, see you all :)

@Mochan Goodbye!

jrg
is there anything like the .app format for linux?

Briefly... what is the .app format?

jrg
9:17 PM
the .app format is a spec that apple has
that is basically a folder that ends in .app
has two folders inside it
one something like bin, the other something like share (as in /usr/local/share)

Python has something like that called a "binary distribution".
It's basically an archive containing the package's contents as they would be organized in an actual filesystem.

hulu added a nice new button i really like "watch latest free episode" <-- good idea
/OT

jrg
@GeorgeEdison anything that is language independent?

Some companies just distribute binary installers.

jrg
AND HOW DO THEY CREATE THEM!?

9:27 PM
They probably create them themselves :)

jrg
I know that - HOW?!

They write an application :)

jrg
because i want to do something similar for a proprietary app i'm developing.

If there is sufficient interest, I might be convinced to start such a project.
Qt for example offers a flexible resource management system that allows applications to embed files and data in the application.

jrg
fpm - fing package management.

9:29 PM
(I think at one point, NSIS was being ported to Linux.)

jrg
let me chart out the tree i want things to look like

base64 or uuencode their components in a shell script and extract them from a bash script...then rename it to .run. seems to be the modus operandi

jrg
(and now i'm just rubber duck debugging)
@AbrahamVanHelpsing .run is a evil, evil EVIL EVIL EVIL FORMAT.

yes. i know. but you asked how they did their own installers

Stick with ELF files.
In fact, this would be perfect for Qt.

jrg
9:30 PM
i spent 1 week (12/hr days) debugging a .run file.

@jrg Sometimes I wonder, if .run is such a terrible format, WHY does it still exist?

jrg
@Flabricorn no clue.

@jrg .bin isn't the greatest either.

jrg
before i gave up and marked the bug "wontfix"

You've inspired me to write something...
Now I just need a name for it...

jrg
9:33 PM
ONEBOX DANGIT

python has a module where you can have an in-memory filesystem and add that to sys.path. works fine for everything that doesn't have binary extensions

9:45 PM
Whoa... 2buntu.com is malfunctioning.

Anyone elseo notice the Download for Ubuntu images are broken?
I just went through and added it to a bunch of answers as per the style guide

A: How to post links that integrate with the Software Center?

Marco Ceppi Volunteers Wanted! Here is a search of posts with "sudo apt-get install" but are missing apps.ubuntu.com links (we filter out "error" and "ppa"). If you want to make a difference for new users, add these buttons to existing questions where appropriate! https://www.google.com/sear...

It's loading for me.

Hm. Maybe cached
I can't get hostmar.co to resolve

which is where it's hosted

9:51 PM
Hmm... it's not loading for me now.
Let me run a traceroute...

Can it be hosted on askubuntu? Do mods get that sort of option?

They could make a request for that.

Here, I uploaded one to one of my own posts i.stack.imgur.com/bXigo.png
so it's hosted through SX
-ish
can't find the smaller one
At least the SX imgur account

@KyleMacey I've reviewed some of your edits. They're good edits, but your summaries don't really help. When you say "Improved Question", we already assume that an edit improves the question. The edits themselves are good.
You can say things like "changes quote to code, punctuation".

Yeah I had for a while
Then I had seen "improved question" on other people's edits
I thought that was the universal

10:00 PM
Those users who do that should be warned in chat if they are around.

Ok, I'll be more diligent

Thanks! They're good edits. I don't deny that.

Thanks. Sorry for slacking a bit.

No problem. Usually it's not a problem but when reviewers glance over suggested edits quickly, it helps to have a good summary.

Understood.

10:04 PM
Anyone know how sudo actually elevates users? The sudo executable itself is run as a regular user. Is it some sort of backend daemon that does these things?

@ObsessiveSSOℲ It's simply a wrapper for the sudo Linux syscall.

Ah. How is this syscall limited to only the sudo executable?

Limited to sudo?
Actually hang on, let me check something...

So I can;t make a little executable that elevates freely. It's sudo(executable) that parses sudoers.

This answer might help explain things:

A: How to works sudo? To build it in Go

Basile StarynkevitchSo you want to re-implement sudo in Go. This is weird. I suggest to study the source code of sudo at first. You need to understand carefully how Unix works at the system level. Did you read a book like Advanced Unix Programming and/or Advanced Linux Programming? Do you understand well the role o...

10:12 PM
@GeorgeEdison You should adapt btrfs-tools and e2fsprogs to use Windows FS interfasec then WinCross them into drivers...
People would find it useful...

Sadly Windows' IFS interface is vastly different from the Linux kernel interface and FUSE.

i think you're moving in the wrong direction obsfos

Probably... I don't know much about Windows IFS... 'twould have been easier on Windows 95...

GUYS. LINUS TORVALDS LIKES KDE. IT'S ALL GOING TO BE OKAY.

10:43 PM
(-.-)

@GeorgeEdison youre biased torwards it QT man! :P

Of course. I make no appologies for promoting Qt - it truly is the best software development platform in existence.

@GeorgeEdison not even saying otherwise :)
