18:00
check it out
that'be some cluster :)
jrg
jrg
there aren't a lot of them right now
Oh god. Well then I have to find some other low priced ARM boards.
I should talk to the Linaro guys.
heh
this is on their ebay user profile:
> Fantastic product, delivered promptly with no problems. Great Seller A++++++ 16-Jan-12 18:58
Such a cluster is something I wanted to do since I was in @jrg age. If I would have been as smart as him back then ... oh boy.
18:03
exactly what I would say if I'd just spent a thousand pounds on a piece of plastic with some chips on it
:D
jrg
jrg
@OctavianDamiean I've wanted to do a cluster for years
just never had the hardware
fun toys
I made a cluster a couple of months ago
with virtual machines ;)
jrg
jrg
well, up until last month I didn't have the hardware to run VMs. ;)
18:05
then I spent two days writing programs for it and decided that it was almost as much fun as it is difficult
jrg
jrg
WAIT. its ARB meeting time.
/me gets on irc
@jrg well I ran it on my single-core 2.2ghz celery processor laptop. they took a second to accept characters from ssh and so on
Wait, what's ARB?
jrg
jrg
@StefanoPalazzo its more to say "I did this" than to have something cool to show
Application Review Board.
if you can script creating the VMs it's not that difficult to set up
@jrg yes exactly
jrg
jrg
Aka, the ubuntu software center overlords.
@jrg is that in #ubuntu-meeting?
jrg
jrg
@ajmitch i don't see any activity going on right now... is #ubuntu-meeting the place?
18:07
@jrg I appear to be the only one around, despite mailing the list earlier in the week
jrg
jrg
i think we might be in the wrong room
it's disappointing
jrg
jrg
:(
And I was getting SO EXCITED.
why?
jrg
jrg
well, because i was actually going to be around for one
18:09
heh
it's really nothing to get excited about :)
I got up especially early on a saturday morning for this :P
jrg
jrg
hey, you're discussing ubuntu tweak.
any time that gets on the table I'm excited
because thats my teams weapon of choice (generally). :P
Except it would have been "we can't approve this, and here's why"
jrg
jrg
well, even that is better than silence
I mostly raised it to clarify what the rules are about such apps
since then it would be pushed into the archive via the normal route
jrg
jrg
i see.
18:24
What error reporting flag do I need (in php) to get something more helpful than this:
Server error
The website encountered an error while retrieving localhost/index.php/inventory. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.
Here are some suggestions:
Reload this web page later.
HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfil the request.
jrg
jrg
YAY. @StefanoPalazzo!!! meeting started!
@rlemon A popper programming language.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
@OctavianDamiean PHP is a proper programming language, if you end up fucking it up you are not a proper programmer (imo) .
but that is the same with any language... except maybe Dart.
shudders
I just can't stand it, that's all. :)
lol, fair enough.
jrg
jrg
18:28
PHP - the perl of the web.
or is perl the PHP of the sysadmin? Hmmm...
Perl shudders even more
PHP suffers from the same problems JS does.. too many hands in the pot trying to abstract layers on top and improve the language.
from it's core, without the bloat, it (like js) is a wonderful language to work with..
I enjoy JavaScript though.
What I enjoy most is Python. It is like eyebalm.
@jrg it's often called the VB of the web
jrg
jrg
@ajmitch Heh.
18:30
because js is client side.. so you either have to include the libs or not use them..
php on the otherhand is shipped with shit like PECL, which blows.
throws Node.js into the room and whistles
jrg
jrg
@ajmitch ubuntu tweak has a button to revert things. (iirc) (I know, i'm not part of the ARB, just offereing some advice)
nodejs! We have a charm for that!
@jrg problem is that it does a whole lot more
jrg
jrg
18:32
I won't be happy until I can write python to write ruby to write coffeescript to write node.js to write my PHP.
@OctavianDamiean nodejs is great.. in a year or so. (albeit it is production ready imo, there are not enough hosting solutions)
PHP \o/
Ewwww!
Yea, I can't wait until node.js get really adopted.
jrg
jrg
so if the repos, gksudo and /etc stuff get removed, UT is "OK"? I mean, i think its supposed to be the kitchen sink that (to some extent) replaces ccsm, the highly dangerous computer janitor, and similar things.
@jrg I don't know how much of it has to be excised
jrg
jrg
18:36
oops. wrong window. or maybe the right one... :P
Hm.
i see.
@StefanoPalazzo Where are you?
I'm currently on the live CD
It says :
ERROR: No private directories found; make sure that your root filesystem is mounted.
Oh I made a mistake, never mind.
@jrg see what I mean about not very exciting? :)
18:53
hi guys
If I want to remove the gnome shell and remain only with Unity, is "sudo apt-get remove gnome-shell" enough?
good evening!
I have 6 main pages..
[dashboard] - [apples] - [oranges] - [bananas] - [fruit] - [help]
dashboard is where the user is taken when they login - think of it as 'home'
all pages have breadcrumbs displayed.. would it make more sense to have
" > dashboard > apples" when on [apples] or
" > apples"
jrg
jrg
19:09
@ajmitch it was so boring i fell asleep.
tbh, after UT was done, i stopped paying attention
I'm almost asleep... :)
jrg
jrg
@bioShark yes
UT? unreal tournament?
jrg
jrg
ubuntu tweak.
tweaking tools come straight from satan!
jrg
jrg
19:12
Says the guy who suggests using dconf/gconf all the time. ;D
Wubi is almost finished installing... not bad.
@bioShark you may want to run sudo apt-get autoremove afterwards
jrg
jrg
that too.
@bioShark also, if you want to get rid of configuration files, you can add the --purge switch to both commands.
gnome-shell installs lots of stuff
jrg
jrg
PURGE ALL THE THINGS.
it's almost as bad as installing a kde application
jrg
jrg
19:13
We're back down to 74% acceptance rate. :\
@jrg whistles
back down?
I thought we went up to 75?
jrg
jrg
typo.
how fast are those stats updated?
jrg
jrg
no clue.
19:15
:S
jrg
jrg
probably every 2-3 hours
should be 74.5%
so there is a chance we have more un answered then we did 2-3 hours ago? (starts looking for own questions not solved)
jrg
jrg
well, keep in mind we're getting 100+ a day
askubuntu.com/questions → 1 - unanswered/newest
jrg
jrg
19:17
however, the page htorque linked to goes down slowly but surely.
i think the answer rate includes closed questions
jrg
jrg
nope
thats the whole point of closing them
it went up when i answered stuff from the list with answers with zero score

Q: Breadcrumbs and selected page

rlemonI have a unique situation (if there is another post here outlining it please link to me so I can remove mine). I have a menubar at the top of my page with six links in it. Each link will take you to a new area within the webapp, and each new area will have a magnitude of sub pages to it. So My f...

but then the numbers don't add up
19:18
I tried posting this in here before and got no responses... now I offer you tidings of images and a main site question.
@jrg closing a question removes it from 'unanswered', so it positively affects the answer rate, but those questions are still used to calculate it.
jrg
jrg
@htorque ... :S
would be cool if we could reach 85% by precise release, because it will drop 10% afterwards. :D
jrg
jrg
so.. are you saying we're not doing anything positive?
we do!
19:21
@rlemon You should checkout my user script for the Android chat room. I bet you'd like it. :D
jrg
jrg
and in fact we are wasting time that we could be using to research answers...? :P
@OctavianDamiean link
@jrg to the system, closing is the same as answering a question (give one answer +1 score)
jrg
jrg
@htorque OH. Ok, i feel so much happier now.
it's just that closed questions count towards the total count
jrg
jrg
19:22
inconsistent system is inconsistent.
@rlemon Link. Works only in the Android room though.
@jrg if we close 50 unanswered questions it's: 1 - (unanswered-50)/newest, when 1 - (unanswered-50)/(newest - 50) would be even cooler.
but afaik only dupes stay on the site forever, right?
jrg
jrg
dupes stay forever.
good, so... let's continue to close!
:-)
Also, it might not be the cleanest JavaScript (I'm still a beginner) but good enough.
19:24
i'm out of votes, by the way. :P
jrg
jrg
i'm out of votes.
:D
@jrg ah :\ did I miss anything interesting?
i went through your list in regulators this morning and then it was like: come back in 18 hours :D
jrg
jrg
@StefanoPalazzo Nope.
not really
@htorque hehe.
too bad (:
19:26
@OctavianDamiean Where did my stars go?
the cursor is funny. :P
Unhide them.
The entire right bar is going to get changed soon.
ahhh, i seee.
lol, I made this monstrosity yesterday gist.github.com/1686228
It'll be shrinkable.
are there any applications out there that can measure how much your computer is pending (power wise)?
0
Q: How to check needed power supply for my PC. Ubuntu 11.10

YolaI want to buy UPS, but don't know parameters. How i can check my hardware for it?

Also load the access tab in the room information.
@rlemon Check this out. :)
19:29
@OctavianDamiean wkr.at got a new design (already down):
That awkward feeling when your Nazi Page is covered by a Soviet Pony. #OpBlitzkrieg @AnonAustria
Awesome. :D
and the site was playing the russian anthem :D
19:38
it's a LOT shittier than I could make it, I can actually remove the button all together but I would need to require some jQuery UI functions/magic to fix the textarea issues.
grumbles about stupid chrome
and I felt a button was a little less obtrusive than loading the elephant that is jQuery UI
@RolandTaylor are you around?
Okay I'll forget what I was going to say for sure. So I'll just write you an email :)
old school
jrg
jrg
Ok, now I have to figure out which 11.10 is the wubi install in GRUB....
i'll have like, a ton of 11.10, wubi, windows and 12.04. :S
Gnome shell purged successfully
Yesterday I have installed ATI 12.1 video driver with your help guys. Since then I have noticed a strange behavior. Every log-our ends up in me not being able to log back in.
I provide my password, the log-in sound plays and the screen is frozen on my wallpaper. Mouse is working.
@bioShark multiple screen?
1 screen
CTRL+ALT + Backspace resets the xserver and puts me back on the login, but any further attempts have the same result
normal restart from the login page results in correct login
19:49
nice grub menu james :D
jrg
jrg
I'll keep you updated via G+ on how this goes.
Thanks. :D
so when accessing the encrypted folder, X crashed and dispayed a mess of log messages on the TTY, then it froze (something like that)
@Bruno Pereira 1 screen
but I gather it basically sort of worked, which is a good start
is my problem worth an AskUbuntu question?
19:53
@bioShark try to get rid of your xorg.conf file and create it again. Also make sure that the open source drivers are not being also loaded.
@Bruno Pereira I guess for recreating xorg.conf I should run "sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf" and "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg". But how to make sure my open source drivers are not also loaded?
jrg
jrg
Ok, so i've encrypted my home dir on that machine, and i'm now on ubuntu
oh my, I just figured out that "bug"
since a few days, all my apps launch maximized
guess what, it was CCSM
jrg
jrg
BLAME CCSM
i was right. :P
and ninjad. :P
there's a setting, "maximize [something]", and I thought it controls the maximize feature when you drag a window to the screen edge, so I set it to 95% or something
I was about to file a bug as well and waste someone's time with that. Jorge may well have a point :D
jrg
jrg
20:10
hehe.
@Bruno Pereira I have run sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg for the reconfiguration, but how do I make sure the open source drivers are not loaded?
jrg
jrg
almost there...
lets see how long this'll take to find it...
jrg
jrg
marco bought another domain huh? :P
` SeaCrow Web Solutions

Registered through: Go Daddy
Domain Name: BLAMECCSM.COM`
GODADDY?!
WHAT.....
;)
Still waiting for the domain partnership to go through :)
jrg
jrg
20:16
Ah.
Sometime end of February we'll be able to offer domain registrations
if anyone is interested... paste.ubuntu.com/819261 breadcrumbs in CI from uri_string()
jrg
jrg
SUCCESS @StefanoPalazzo!!!
:D
Well, that was either 3 hours of awesomeness, or three hours wasted, depends on if it works for Stefano...
(it takes forever to install wubi. *_*)
so can somebody tell me how I can make sure my open source ati drivers are loaded? And I am actually using the official one
@bioShark I kinda busy making food at the moment, I will ping you later just in case to check any progress, sorry :S
20:25
Great answer: What is the equivalent of 'ctrl-alt-delete'? http://askubuntu.com/questions/95192/what-is-the-equivalent-of-ctrl-alt-delete/95202#95202 #process
@Bruno Pereira don't worry I am about to eat as well. Enjoy.
@jrg nice! I'll tell you when I know more
jrg
jrg
Ok.
@jrg did you do anything unusual to get a nautilus windows for the /tmp/ mount?
jrg
jrg
@StefanoPalazzo I didn't try it in nautilus
however, it claims i can't get in
so a gksu nautilus (and a stiff warning) should suffice
i'll update my gist.
@StefanoPalazzo a gksu nautilus works
20:55
ugh... I hate writing breadcrumbs scripts... it's done... I just didn't like writing it
@jrg it should work if you just mount from the actual location of root.disk, without copying it. shouldn't it?
she's on a live CD, so there's no place to copy anything
jrg
jrg
@StefanoPalazzo what do you mean?
@jrg never mind me. I thought your gist said to copy the file somewhere
I guess I'm as confused as that blasted laptop
jrg
jrg
@StefanoPalazzo well, that part was related to the "get the root.disk to a ubuntu machine"
i'll expand on it later and say you can do it via a livecd (in the answer)
@jrg another one: are there any more files other than root.disk in '\ubuntu\disks'?
jrg
jrg
21:02
at least one.
oh my word
she just has one file called "boot", and that's it
jrg
jrg
root.disk, swap.disk and boot/grub.
bbl - have a good night all.
jrg
jrg
oh.... her data might be gone.
but she can get to the log in screen and log in as a guest
?!?!
@rlemon see you :)
jrg
jrg
21:04
thats what i have
that is weird
the files must be somewhere
jrg
jrg
thats the entire contents of my ubuntu dir
What should I do with blameccms.com
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi have it redirect to a search for "ccsm" and "unity" status:closed
I have an idea for that :) it could be a list of bugs in lauchpad, with a field where you can put in a link to a bug report and click "Blame CCSM"
jrg
jrg
21:07
LOL
then add up all the time deltas from "bug created" to now, and display it like this:
jrg
jrg
blameccsm.com redirects to 2buntu.
"CCSM has wasted 82,342,141,644 hours of developer time so far"
jrg
jrg
:D
out of all the people complaining only one person has attempted to help
jrg
jrg
21:09
I just think its a broken, misunderstood and bad tool. :P
well, the thing is, everyone is like omg it's a working tool and amazing
I think "why doesn't canonical just make one that's better" (but then I would, not knowing anything about how difficult it is to make an OS, one like Ubuntu even)
it has 38 commits over the course of /3 years/
that sound like a healthy project?
jrg
jrg
that sounds healthier then a dead man.
but thats not saying much
the AU lens has 49.
21:11
@JorgeCastro do you know what people change in ccsm, why they need it?
or do they just tinker?
so basically, bunch of part time AU people have more activity on a lens than this tool.
jrg
jrg
@StefanoPalazzo at this point i think its all unity related, or fire compiz.
@StefanoPalazzo people want their cubes and flaming windows or whatever crackrock
2
:D
hum
there's a call to action
a tool like CCSM, but one that knows about unity and cares about being ubuntu would surely be a massive hit
and with quickly and python, changing the configuration is child's play
jrg
jrg
myunity? or ubuntu tweak? ;)
21:15
I'd love to see one that's more a kind of configuration program, rather than a "supertweak 2000 0.3 beta enterprise edition"
with green graphics
you know what I mean :)
called "Unity Settings" and looking like any other gnome configuration dialog
it's just gconf flags
pygtk and a little bit o time
okay I'll post a question about this Wubi business. this'll be a weird one
still same issue with my driver. Fail after logout, but works great after a reboot
I may just raise a question
jrg
jrg
@StefanoPalazzo did my solution help?
@jrg we didn't have a chance to try it. the first step is locating root.disk, which is missing
so weird
jrg
jrg
21:22
sudo find / -name 'root.disk'
well, it's like this:
I think I'll do a quick HISTORY or CCSM
you can boot into ubuntu, and log in as a guest
but nothing else, can't even get a TTY
and within windows, there isn't a root.disk file to be found anywhere
jrg
jrg
what the...
exactly :)
jrg
jrg
21:25
you can't load a terminal in the ubuntu (as a guest)
you can, but it's locked down very tightly
jrg
jrg
no su user?
nope. "sudo" doesn't work at all
jrg
jrg
immagonnagocryinacornerathelostofoneofourgreatesttools. :(
@JorgeCastro I like my cubes, flaming windows and whatnot!
21:27
I've spent a few minutes trying all kinds of options, weird stuff like "sudo -u stefano sudo su"
no luck :) that'd be perfect
jrg
jrg
i know, 74% @William
its gone down. and it'll go down a little more over the weekend because i won't be here to push things through. :(
@StefanoPalazzo post that question already, i really want to think of a back door (another one) over the weekend.
:p
Good luck with you and your weekend!
Whats chat reputation?
eg the number that appears when you make 3 or more posts
what does it do
@William it's your combined rep from all SE sites
jrg
jrg
so far, i've got three AU questions to meditate on, about 6 pages of API docs and a back door to get into a wubi install.
21:30
Really?
jrg
jrg
all inside of a weekend. :D
I have 2.7k? Wow!
I feel special again!
jrg
jrg
hehe. ;D
Then again, most of that is the 100 you get for logging in...
I no longer feel special.
It was nice while it lasted.
jrg
jrg
i think it only counts sites with 200+
(like flair)
21:32
It does?
then how does i have 2.7k?
jrg
jrg
i think
let me go join french.se or something

Q: Wubi's root.disk is missing, but you can still log in as a guest - where is the data?

Stefano PalazzoThis laptop is running Windows and Ubuntu, which was installed via Wubi. Ubuntu boots perfectly fine, but you can only log in as a guest. So in order to recover the files, we now need to find root.disk so we can mount it and recover the data using ecryptfs-utils. The file is supposed to be in C...

jrg
jrg
Yeah, i think its combined rep
See yall in 3,4 hrs
bye
21:35
bye
jrg
jrg
posted on G+ @StefanoPalazzo.
Welcome our newest contributor to the Ask Ubuntu Page on Google+, Roland freakin' Taylor!
jrg
jrg
Oh? you trust the old chatroom troll with our community G+ page? ;)
I would repost that as +AU, but I daren't abuse my powers like that (:
jrg
jrg
NOTHING HAPPENED. >_>
21:39
oh that's nice of you to offer a bounty for it
thanks :)
jrg
jrg
you're welcome. seriously.
ok, i've gotta go.
thanks a lot for all your time man. I'm sure we'll figure it out eventually :) See you!
jrg
jrg
i'll talk to you later folks, and if you have close votes, i think i have enough questions for you guys to be happy - they are over here.
you're welcome. :)
cya!
Hi guys... Don't know if anyone has seen this in the UK, but, whilst I am learning a lot of Linux, deep down I am a Windows guy and I have jokes with the networking guy about it... he bought me this today....
thought you guys might enjoy!
Man, I'd so want to get one of those. :(
21:48
how nice is that :)
cool
looks like the nearest shop is in france
If interested, it was a tiny bit (IMHO) over fizzy, but a very deep and nice cola flavour!
I want it just for the can. :D
You know, people already think that I'm a bit strange because almost everything I wear has something with Ubuntu printed on it, if I tell people that I even drink Ubuntu ... well, I don't know how much more nerdy I can get. :D
I get that from only wearing once in a while my maverick t-shit :)
Neard!
21:57
@OctavianDamiean careful, or your next thing may be an Ubuntu Straitjacket!
I would have no problem with that if it has an Ubuntu brandmark or CoF. :P
... if serious, I don't mind buying and shipping... but I don't know rules/regulations though about posting them. and... it would probably get crushed or require so much protection, it would cost a fortune to ship :/
