UBUNTU. WHAT PART OF KILL THE INSTALLER DON"T YOU UNDERSTAND?!
man, this is the part of askubuntu's rep system that confuses me: give a technical answer like this askubuntu.com/questions/96357/… and you get 1 vote, pretend your a firefox settings specialist and give a lame answer like this askubuntu.com/questions/97176/… and there's ppl upvoting like if their lifes depended on it!
That's the way things are on the Internet, unfortunately.
jrg
jrg
Yeah, unfortunately.
well, lets hope the firefox answer attracts another 1000s of users ;)
00:10
there. +1
@rlemon lol, its really not the repo, its the spirits of the votes if you catch my drift (but thx)
jrg
jrg
already found a weird UI bug in precise
i know :P i read the answer and it inspired me
jrg
jrg
@rlemon what was the about:whatever that jorge mentioned with the easter egg?
wish I lived in the US for the Linux conventions :(
jrg
jrg
00:13
I'm not at the Linux con.
about:robot[s?] or something
i tried but it didn't work.
jrg
jrg
just watched the live feed. :P
yeah, i can't replicate it here on my unity 5.0
about:robots
razorjack.net/quicksand this is pretty slick if you ask me
jrg
jrg
he must have been ruinning something special....... :P
00:14
alt+f2 "about:robots"
worked for me now. i forgot the s
jrg
jrg
oh, alt-f2.
i was just trying normal dash. :P
lol clever.
its not even a unity easter egg. its a firefox one. :P
no overlay scrollbars in firefox yet. :(
jrg
jrg
Guess I was slow to realize it. :p
Is precise faster? It seems like it is.
Sorry. I was just excited. :/
@jrg its placebo ;)
00:26
He wasn't that active. And I just accidentally found him on AU. In any case, we should be excited anyway. :D
jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira heh.
Seems faster yeah
@jrg I don't know. I too feel the same. I think it is because of Unity 5?
jrg
jrg
WE WE WE SO EXCITED, WE SO EXCITED WE SO EXCITED, WE GOT THE CRAZY GREEN BIRD GUY ON ASK UBUNTU
im not there yet, then again I dont use twitter! (<<<< there, I said it!)
jrg
jrg
00:28
yeah, the livecd seems about as snappy as my 11.10 install. :P
jrg
jrg
It was tabled, not dead.
while SOPA might be dead, what people don't understand is that the lobbyists who got it this far in the first place are paid BIG BUCKS to do it
and the politicians are also paid (illegally) to pass stuff like this.
serious? and I was thinking that they were honest living man....
jrg
jrg
As I pointed out earlier:
Dear IT community: please continue working on ways to hack around SOPA, because odds are it will eventually become law under another name.
and meyer is right
i read maddox's blog post and that guy influenced my thoughts :/
jrg
jrg
00:31
it will become law. its just a matter of how soon.
maddox is blocked here, its supposedly an "adult" domain. :S
but if it does straightaway, people would be more aware than later.
jrg
jrg
exactly.
so SOPA/PIPA are on hold
i give the US another 6 months, tops.
and then, after that, we feel the effects of our new police state under the NDAA, and we have a revolt in another 10. </end-political-rantage>
i hate the politics messing with normal life.
the problem is people either know too much or they don't know anything.
jrg
jrg
in other (on-topic!) news, is it safe to click "skip" in the installer while you're at "removing conflicting operating system files" when you did a wipe of the partition before you pressed install?
it doesn't sound like a good idea.
jrg
jrg
00:35
ok i won't do it then
@jrg it starts with a big banner saying "I hope SOPA passes."
jrg
jrg
also, apparently didrocks is working on a unity config tool - +50 rep to the person who finds it and adds that to the unity config question
@BrunoPereira thanks, i'm reading it now.
@jrg translate.google.com/… (expletive-filled) :D
jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira the part where he says "they (MPAA) lied" is the part about "losing 2 million jobs but only employing a few hundred thousand", right?
@rlemon oh, you did not!
@jrg I cannot say if true or precise
00:41
blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/01/20/… - looks like Microsoft finally copied mobile broadband off Network Manager and added up nice bells and whistles
jrg
jrg
Ok, was just trying to figure it out. thanks
@jokerdino i'm going to skip the conflicting OS files part because its been ~10+ minutes with no progress. :P
in that case, you got no choice! :P
@BrunoPereira What did I do?
jrg
jrg
of course the skip button just sits there and stares at me. :P
@rlemon nothing, saw a pic and reminded of you ;)
00:46
:O!!!
i do like unicorns.... not as much as him apparently.
jrg
jrg
before I start a bounty on this, is it a dupe? - askubuntu.com/questions/70146/…
@jrg def not a dupe I think
jrg
jrg
also, just to make sure i'm asking for the right answer here,
"I have dual monitor,s, I'd like to have different wallpapers for each of them", right?
should be something like "twin view different wallpaper" so it does not create confusion with multi X servers
jrg
jrg
Direct quote from an email from Al Franken (US Senator): "...millions of Americans whos livelihoods rely on strong protections for intellectual property: middle-class workers - most of them union workers in all 50 states..."
I see how it is Mr. Franken. You won't step on the unions to protect freedom. I see how it is.
@jokerdino so, i killed the installer and started over
and then i didn't set /home up on another partition, so its happy now

I do not understand the downvote, so I blame it on @jrg.

@jrg no, that was my answer which I deleted
jrg

can someone test it?
i'm not 100% sure it'll "work", i just read the docs and did some greppin'.
brb, precise just finished installing
@jrg testing
jrg
jrg
01:19
@bruno also, you can restore the backup just by moving the .bak file back into place. FYI in case you get stuck in a try.
@jrg I wont, thats the answer I was expecting ;)
jrg
jrg
Um ok?
oh great, my trackpad isn't working in precise right now.
:S
first bug to report this time around! :D
@jrg lol so you started it all over? :)
jrg
jrg
@jokerdino yup
wow, just found a bug report that goes like this:

InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" - Release amd64 (20101007.1)
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10
that guy did two release upgrades.
hes brave
i have done 4 so far.
jrg
jrg
01:32
thats crazy.
i don't know, it still works fine here
jrg
jrg
i have never had a upgrade go well.
10.04 to 10.10 failed miserably - dpkg segged. 10.10 to 11.04 went well, but that was because i did that at alpha 1. :P 11.04 to 11.10 i didn't bother except for the first alpha. after that, i stopped. :P
looks like i am a little lucky then.
jrg
jrg
or maybe i just have bad luck
but i will do a 10.04 to 12.04 upgrade (in a VM) sometime in the next few weeks
01:49
I've added some new examples as well as a source code viewer.

Joni have a Lenovo Y560, and the battery icon in the top right corner always has the lightning bolt like it is charging, even when it isnt being charged. EDIT: this is happening when im not connected to anything, even when my battery is about to die.

I was talking to the author of that question yesterday.

yeah, its not over yet.

It's here! (I hope it works :P)
It will never be over. I'm already planning "Underground DNS"

...it couldn't have an online leaderboard though - user-generated content.
nice idea haha
/me downloading virtual box and 12.04 iso inside Windows 7.
As a first thing moving back to Windows, I changed the task bar to the left and autohid it.
@jokerdino Welcome to the club :) I've been running Windows 8 since September with Ubuntu 11.10 in a VM.
(One version ahead of you on Windows - one version behind for Ubuntu...)
03:44
oh cool.
04:42
finished downloading it. just managed to install it. boo i can only run unity-2d in VMWare.
Does VMWare contain an option for enabling 3D acceleration?
04:57
@jokerdino did you install the guest editions business for vmware?
I've read some interesting articles on Distributed DNS
05:09
@lazyPower I have a question for you about JavaScript projects.
(You work a lot with JavaScript, right?)
yep
Fire away
Great! I've got a bunch of JS files that need to get merged into a single file before minification...
How do you handle this scenario?
(It's kind of like the jQuery source - merge, minify, JSLint, deploy :) )
i usually have an ant build script do it for me -- but the gist is i create a temporary new file -- cat each file sequentially to the temp file -- minify it and then rename the output file
i use Jenkins for this task
Ah, I wondered if there was some automated tool for it.
i have a Continuous Integration server thats hooked into github -- so each commit i make with the flagged message of [#compile] it checks out the source and runs unit tests
the end goal is to have it package them and run automated system deploys to staging
05:12
Ah, I see.
but i'm still a ways away from that since i dont quite understand msdeploy -- its such a horrid tool
Well, the problem for me is that cat is a Unix tool :)
type file1 file2 > file3
type is similar to cat
and my CI server is windows based ;) -- i write .net code -- i dont think theres a way for me to run msbuild reliably on unix
copy /b is another option
my final option presented -- is install native unix tools on your box
I've considered that - I have msys installed for git.
But I kind of want to avoid that since it requires a lot of manual setup (and I might want to automate this down the road).
type file1 file2 ... works great!
then i would write a powershell script or a batch file to do this
05:16
Yup, a batch file is exactly what I'm thinking now.
i'm getting partial to powershell :P
Thanks for helping me, I appreciate it.
Glad I could give back :)
i admire your work George -- you're gonna do great things man.
Thank you.
@lazyPower I don't know anything about that. what is that?
Thanks
NP. it'll make your guest operating system experience much better
supports drag & drop, mouse & graphics acceleration, and general oddity fixes
that and shared folders are nice too. you can mount host folders in the guest operating system
However, i use virtualbox not vmware -- but my school has a vmware server that i've made extensive use of :)
oh wait, virtualbox is not vmware?
i actually have virtual box installed.
VMWare is owned by citrix (? -- needs verification) while Virtual Box is the free Oracle incantation
I got the edition from Oracle..

I encrypted home after install of 11.10. Prior to encryption I was able to use SimpleLightDM manager to change the background @ login. After encryption, the background disappeared. I tried moving the background to another location in the file system outside of home and it didn't work. Sort of trivial stuff, but annoying
@jokerdino Thanks, makes sense. I will try that

we're always so low on flags no a days
@AmithKK That's all a moderator is. We rarely act on our own free will
I've even stopped reading some of the answers flagged. I see 5 people have flagged it and at least one of them left a comment I just delete it and don't even bat an eye

@AmithKK We will find you
The system has ways of detecting suspicious patterns, even if it's not by the same IP.
jrg

@AmithKK they will find you.

@AmithKK how could I improve it?
what bugs have been filed?
@jrg I mean the git structure

jrg

oh. can't really improve it any more than it is

jrg

what i'd probably do though
is try to abstract as much as i could
