Hello all, While "aptitude update"-ing, I got the message "C: The package osmos needs to be reinstalled, but can't find archive for it". I tried apt-get clean && autoclean, apt-get -f install -a, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas where I should look further?

Hey, nice to see you!

Q: Should I be using 'sudo' in scripts that I write?

Jimmy LykeI'm setting up a new machine (well actually, an Ubuntu VM) and am trying to write a script to setup a few common things that I use when doing this (Git, curl, vim + janus). So my script looks a bit like this: #setup #!/bin/sh sudo apt-get install git sudo apt-get install curl ... It doesn't ...

jrg
@lazyPower So, I decided to be stupid and write this thing in libreoffice impressions for a rough draft, then change it into a HTML thingy.
And now git doesn't like my HTML files for some reason. I think I compiled git the wrong way. :P
@UbuntuQuestionsonUL Good question. It can stay on U&L.

Q: How do I modify the search index in Ubuntu 11.04?

StephenI'm loving (parts) of this new unity?/ubiquity? interface; in particular the searching with the windows key (just like Windows 7!). But how do I: Tell it what programs I'd like to be able to return Tell it where I'd like file searches to be performed I presume 2 has something to do with inde...

2:21 AM
@jrg uhh
@jrg git doesnt care about the contents of a file, it diffs it regardless
it could be html, xml, json, xaml, crayon-speek, go, c++, python, jython, james-own-language, pictures, binary-executeables, dll's, libraries, lovenotes, its all going to get diffed and versioned the same

good morning!
can you guys help me out? i'm looking for a way to create a file that's exactly 2147483647 bytes large (that's 2 GiB - 1 byte). unfortunately that's to big for the bs parameter of dd and it's also a prime number so i can't use dd's count parameter (creating it byte-wise with dd would take too long). maybe there's a way to truncate a 2GiB file at that size?
@Rinzwind hi

Nope,

so off to japan you go

I work next to MSI Europe :=) No need to go to Japan

7:40 AM
haha
to answer my own question → man truncate

split should be able to do that too?
didn't see you q there >:D Just the "hi"

8:02 AM
funny thing is, that truncate can also extend a file :D
it's like "rm" would also be able to undelete

it can! rm can do that :=)
try it yourself >:D
rm -rf *
rm --undelete *

>:D

how good is your javascripting?

i don't do javascript, just java

Q: terminal transparency, Imagemagick, and X11 root window problem

SardathrionI use Ubuntu Natty, urxvt (with 256 colours), and Imagemagick (display -window root [...]) to set the root window to a picture. When I use the transparency (-tr) option on urxvt, I get the Ubuntu X login screen background (The pink/purple one) and not the image that is currently on the root windo...

@TheX hello

12:15 PM
me no like dash transparency
it's quite hard to find items if you are a desktop icon collector

ahhh! icons on the desktop

usually i try to keep the number below three
but when you do testing...
i could as well use /tmp and then get mad when i lost something :D

I like the number at 0 tbh. Anything over that and I'm doing something wrong
Can you change the opacity of the dash?

my desk is never at zero, so why should my desktop be? :P
nope

heh, I used to use the Desktop for everything then it got really hard to find stuff. So now I force myself to put things in folders

12:18 PM
@MarcoCeppi Are you on unity 3d?

@AmithKK 11.04 3d, yes

i never put important stuff on my desktop

jrg
@lazyPower I compiled git from source. Hence my _

@jrg why would you do that?

jrg
@MarcoCeppi Because I could..?

12:19 PM
oh, okay

jrg
I felt like wasting time. Guess I've gotta un-install it somehow and go with the packaged version. :)

@MarcoCeppi Mhmmm... No idea .. Did it once on 2d

jrg
That your rig?

blush yes
5 year old intel pentium 4 single core clocked at 2.93 Ghz

jrg
Your display is larger than mine. (I think)

12:23 PM
awesome, you can even disable blur in the dash - then above situation gets even worse

jrg
@AmithKK Faster than me. I'm a single core clocked at 1.6 GHZ.

How much mem?
i got 2GB DDR-1(yes DDR 1)

jrg
1GB. And you beat me once again. ;)
Eh, i've got DDR2, but 2GB beats 1GB, even if it's slower RAM.

@jrg Somehow your comp might be just faster than mine
I have a slower pc than you
and i only have one

jrg
I don't count that chromebook as a computer. Can't develop on it, can't sell it, it's like a white elephant.

12:26 PM
@jrg It looks like one too?
@jrg Send it to me :)
HomeBrew

jrg
Doesn't look like it, and if I sell it Google will have my head nailed to it's legal department's wall. :P

@jrg WHY?

@jrg You can install Ubuntu on it :)

@jrg HACK the hell out of the cpu (on install ubuntu)
@MarcoCeppi How dare thy ninja me?

jrg
@AmithKK Because when I signed into it for the first time, it said "sell it, we'll sue you to the moon" - and I don't install Ubuntu on it because the graphics card is a POS. No idea how it handles youtube on ChromeOS, let alone a Ubuntu variant.

12:28 PM
Wayland is a display server protocol for the Linux Operating System and a library implementing that protocol. Wayland provides a method for compositing window managers to communicate directly with applications and to communicate directly with video and input hardware. Applications render graphics to their own buffers, and the window manager becomes the display server, compositing those buffers to form the on-screen display of application windows. This is a simpler and more efficient approach than using a compositing window manager with the X Window System. Background Kristian Høgsber...
@jrg Dont sell it! . just send it to me .... free

jrg
... doesn't work like that.

1:01 PM
@jrg The chromebook has its uses. and you can web dev on it.
you've seen bespin and the other cloud based editors im' sure. they work flawlessly on chrome (As flawlessly as their codebase will allow)

Can you answer this? Ubuntu One Files for Android will not let me log in http://t.co/Jz1qRO9 #android

@MarcoCeppi did you get a good nights rest lastnight?
your status update reminded me of myself, staying up until 3am and waking back up at 6am to go to work.

Yup, full 8 hours of sleep. Felt good

1:37 PM
The music lens in dash does that have a config somewhere? Or does it hard coded default to ~/Music

it uses what you use in banshee afaict
it certainly doesn't default to ~/Music - i have nothing in there :)

ah
should I trust you is the next question >:D

@Rinzwind i would, he's got cookies

cookies O+
hmmm I can't send comments to my own inbox?
pity >:)

@Rinzwind it's not using that setting in banshee

1:45 PM
damn

i meant it uses what's in banshee's database
i see my albums i've imorted from a different partition in the music lense
banshee still points to ~/Music
so that's not it

aha
so banshee has an sqllite db that the music lens checks?
sqlite3 even :=)

Q: How to register downloaded podcast mp3 in Banshee?

DJ01I just upgraded to Natty and trying to start using Banshee instead of Rythmbox. I noticed that Banshee put downloaded podcost under Podcast folder. I have a bunch of previously downloaded podcasts by Rythmbox which I would like to keep. I can move those files easily into Podcast folder for Bansh...

where is ubuntu one hosted??
anyone knows??

@rogcg probably england (ubuntu one is registered in the uk)
but it is a guess ;)

@Rinzwind I mean the servers. they have their own datacenter or they use another, like amazon, etc.
which server??

Like I said... it's probably located in the UK somewhere. But it is a guess.

@Rinzwind amazon??

4:37 PM
U1 is registered in the uk so I'd expect them to host the servers in the UK

@Rinzwind they have their own servers??

dunno if it is amazon. I'd expect they'd host it themself though

@htorque lol it isn't.

5:44 PM
that's why i've never be tempted to buy a netbook

netbooks are too small for me :=)
Notebook needs to be 17" at least

jrg
Unfortunately, this means I can't use Unity. D:
(at least on Natty)

you maybe cannot use the dash, but surely ubuntu/unity :P
i open the dash just to check for bugs and bug fixes..
the rest is Super → a few letters of the program i wanna start → enter

jrg
Can't use it at all. Just tried, htop freaked out. :P

@htorque You can change the opacity of the launcher and dash :)

5:59 PM
Could I please throw this question into the chat? I'm having trouble unlocking an encrypted folder and need some help.
@Ceppo talked me through this question and that worked well so I started copying the files from the old encrypted drive to the new unencrypted drive and went to bed. Next morning I noticed that the machine has gone to sleep and the copying didn't finish. I try to repeat the steps but get an error message: "Incorrect wrapping key for file [/home/torben/.ecryptfs/wrapped-passphrase]"
Why is the key now incorrect, when it worked fine yesterday? I'm very sure that I am not making any typo in the 32-char passphrase.
specifically, I get this in the terminal:

sorry not my cup of tea :=)

Enter your login passphrase:
Error: Unwrapping passphrase and inserting into the user session keyring failed [-5]
Info: Check the system log for more information from libecryptfs
ERROR: Your passphrase is incorrect

@MarcoCeppi launcher, yeah, but dash?

I think so, I don't have it installed but you should be able to in Experimental

6:03 PM
@TorbenGundtofteBruun Doesn't your wrapping key change every 24 hours? I think it's time sensitive

@MarcoCeppi I thought it asked me to enter the 32-char passphrase that the old home folder was encrypted with. Do you mean that "wrapping key" is something else -- I don't know what that would be?
It does say "Enter your login passphrase"
but the error message says first "Incorrect wrapping key for file" and then "Error attempting to unwrap passphrase from file"

6:37 PM
still needs some upvotes
go go go!

jrg
+1
If you pass OMG! Ubuntu! in upvotes I'm going to laugh. :D

@TorbenGundtofteBruun Right, the wrapping key is determined by the passphrase - kind of like ssh RSA keys
Huh, we have a Bitcoin.SE

i thought bitcoin were dead already?

Naw, In fact I've been thinking about accepting Bitcoins for Ondina

@MarcoCeppi so my passphrase should work, right? How can I troubleshoot this?

jrg
6:49 PM
bitcoin for Ondina? You're joking. :P

@TorbenGundtofteBruun I'm not sure, how did you originally get your passphrase?

@MarcoCeppi back when I installed the old system and made the encrypted home folder, I got a phrase and wrote it down. It worked yesterday, you recall...

Ah, okay - then yes it should work again.

@MarcoCeppi that's what I thought too, but it fails. I even restarted, and removed the /recovery folders we made, then did all the steps like yesterday. It went well until the passphrase...

Peculiar

7:01 PM
Can you answer this? Caps lock problem http://t.co/TIANn7b #capslock

I will reboot and remove the folders again and try all steps once more, then report back afterward.

7:16 PM
_rebooted, retried_ Nope, still doesn't work. I'm skipping "su - torben" and then "ecryptfs-mount-private" failed with the same error. I tried "su - torben" but got "keyctl_search: Required key not available
Perhaps try the interactive 'ecryptfs-mount-private'"
Regardless, "ecryptfs-mount-private" produces the error: Error: Unwrapping passphrase and inserting into the user session keyring failed [-5]
Info: Check the system log for more information from libecryptfs
ERROR: Your passphrase is incorrect
stumped...

what's in system log?

Sep 8 21:15:02 torben-nettop ecryptfs-insert-wrapped-passphrase-into-keyring: Incorrect wrapping key for file [/home/torben/.ecryptfs/wrapped-passphrase]
Sep 8 21:15:02 torben-nettop ecryptfs-insert-wrapped-passphrase-into-keyring: Error attempting to unwrap passphrase from file [/home/torben/.ecryptfs/wrapped-passphrase]; rc = [-5]

I'm reading some instructions on how to recover the passphrase

we just play this
@htorque wanna make an openweek ad?
you can just reuse the developer week one

after two reboots (gotta check my awful boot time)

8:08 PM
no rush
plenty of time
the links, etc. are on my mail to -devel

ah, those with the ugly logo :P
pyramids? old ubuntu colors? old ubuntu font? BOOO! ;-)

jrg
Ugly. :P

no not that one
use the deleted one in the thread
from developer week

yeah will do

but yeah, that's been on the design backlog (getting a new logo) for like a year
but hey, if you want to redo the official logo I can do that.

8:11 PM

nah, i'm only good at judging ;P
you can wait quite long for a bootchart to get generated if you don't have bootchart installed :P
tried bootchart2 a couple of days ago - it showed me 650mb/s IO, then i uninstalled it. >:)
16 seconds... better than before, but still not 10 seconds like in natty. :-(

8:26 PM
Really? 16 seconds is too long for you? I didn't realize that your computer double as a race car :P

jrg
I'm used to my Lucid boottime of 10 seconds as well. :P

Well, I guess it kind of matters if you turn your computers off

my badass optimized lucid 7200rpm hdd notebook could do 12 seconds grub to desktop :P
booting with a ssd shouldn't need more than ten seconds.

jrg
Well, I kinda do reboots a lot because of this thing known as "Ubuntu+1"

pft, bleeding edge ninnies :)

8:30 PM
my bootime is fine, it's login time that is a disaster

yeah, not with autologin :D
it's consuming cpu like mad without doing anything, typing in you password/moving the mouse is laggy like hell for the first seconds
all good with the gtk greeter
i don't get what it's doing there
probably procrastination...
so, about the ad. i'd got to rip out the whole middle part - should it just say anything special?

nah
I don't really have a catchy phrase or anything

how about... "Get Involved" ;P

8:51 PM

@MarcoCeppi Heard you got your hosting company up?
Hello to everyone else

9:35 PM
heya Jacob!

jrg
@Rinzwind Hahah...

@Jacob Not quite yet - the launch was delayed for about a week.

we only got 3 q's with bounties? :D

@MarcoCeppi Oh, sounds like fun

Yup, I'm still really excited about :)

9:40 PM
@MarcoCeppi What type of hosting?

@MarcoCeppi Is Ondina going to be finsihed on Saturday? :)

@Alvar I hope so, we'll see.
@Jacob Shared Linux hosting at first

@MarcoCeppi aaaw... that's just annoying...
@MarcoCeppi is really Tuesday-Saturday a week? :D

Good to know! and a good idea! :D

i'm making the get involved less bold

if you want to give me $20k+ then I can have this guaranteed by Saturday. Likewise, I'll make something crappy with the same budget and release tomorrow :)
This gets all the upboats!

@MarcoCeppi I want you to make something that is good enough for you not for anyone else.

it doesn't need all upvotes, just 6 :P
if you wanna edit it, go on - i'm outta ideas

10:01 PM
@MarcoCeppi Starting with 1 Dedicated server I assume?

How do I copy from a Mac OS X partition to my Ubuntu desktop via root access? http://t.co/GjCgjv9 #root

@Jacob Actually, for the private preview release everything is running on AWS EC2 instances. I'm still setting up the data center racks but I have three servers starting off. One's a hot swap, one for internal sites and functions, and one for customers.

@MarcoCeppi You have anyone else helping?

Yes, Stefano is helping when he can with design and python work

@MarcoCeppi anyone on Sysadmining?

10:04 PM
Me

@MarcoCeppi Have fun @3AM :)

heh, been there :)

10:48 PM
mutli-monitor unity is quite a pain :-o
(probably also compiz' fault)
there should be a multi-monitor task force for prickly
buy me a second dell and i'll help! :D

Eek, I'm trapped at work because all the roads have flooded

jrg
@htorque Compiz hates my new Monitor. Mutter and openbox both like it though, so I'm happy. ;)

11:29 PM
it's really shocking. first experience: unity crash on hooking up the monitor. second experience: menus missing on secondary screen. third experience: modal dialogs from a window on one screen popping up on the other screen. awful!
if monitors were free, we wouldn't see such issues. :P
@JorgeCastro heh, that's an ad, no logo :P
good night all
