Somehow the default sort order in open dialogues has changed to be sorted by Modified. It's changed in all programs, not just a specific one.
This forces me to reach for the mouse and click the Name column every time I open a file (maybe I'm nitpicking but this gets annoying...).

@RolandTaylor: ok I can offer u space on my owncloud, however I can't guarantee security (though I didn't have problem) neither can I guarantee connectivity -- I keep playing/testing with that server so sometimes it goes down for 2/3 days
I want to develop a little application and I want to add events to the calendar of the Gnome panel clock. How does it work? Is there a D-Bus Interface I can use? Or can I directly access the evolution-data-server?
My situation: I'm stuck with a VPS which I have no physical access to. The VPS currently runs Ubuntu 9.04 and I'd like to upgrade to 10.04.
How would I go about doing this? (A fresh install would be fine. I have a complete backup of the server.)

It's getting to be that time (actually, it's about a month later than I'd hoped but still!), API V2.0 is shaping up and we're spending more and more time on UI polish rather than functionality.
So let's get this beta started.
What I'm looking for right now are people interested in pre-release a...
I've read about how source-based linux distros like Gentoo and Arch can have considerable performance increases when compared to pre-built distros like Ubuntu because they install from source with optimizations for your particular system. Is is possible to build Ubuntu from source to get the same...
I wish it was possible to ring up your ISP and have them reverse the upstream/downstream rates on your connection for a set period of time. I could really do with doing an off-site online backup but 40gigs of photos would take over 4 days on my connection. If I could flip things over it would take under 5 hours.

After reading that question and all its answers, I got a headache.
do u know how to go to location in nautilus (Go --> Location) but old nautilus allowed me to simply double click on top (where current location is displayed) and put address there
If I type sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade I can only see that the kernel packages are kept back, and not installed. As the screenshot shows.
If I then start the update manager I can install the kernel, with no problems at all. As the second screenshot shows.
Why is this?...

I did a fresh install of 11.10 shortly after it was released. My laptop's touchpad (a Synaptics touchpad I believe, laptop is an Asus G53SW) had been acting strangely from the beginning. After receiving an answer to this question, I decided to look for other multi-touch gestures, and came across ...

My machine can't play encrypted DVDs on a fresh install. How do I add this capability? Another useful bit of information would be what programs are best for playing DVDs, once I'm able to do so. See the similar question here. Will I be able to play DVD movies from any region?
I'm using ubuntu and any now and then new updates are offered for installation. However I've noticed these updates don't necessarily offer the latest update for any one package, but why?

@rlemon essentially, but a little more basic than a site. A project just allows you to setup different "workspaces" (not like netbeans) where it knows what files you had open and where the parent directory is for the project

@ThomasWard lol i just get peeved when everyone assumes you need to be using a framework to do your development. I do as much vanilla-dev as possible just because i feel more satisfied knowing I have written something of value and is not relying on some heavy framework to run.
Can someone tell me if there is a application or script that can be called from the terminal screen that will bring up the Find Applications or Find Files window that comes up when you click the More Apps an Find Files button in the Dash Home?
Thanks in advance for any comments suggestions.
