@Dave wait it was still open?! D:

Has anyone here participated in a global game jam?
03:49
@CBredlow not me
sorry for spam guys but I think some of these are adequate to the room x)

Q: How do I ask better questions?

Panda PajamaThis is oversimplifying things, but every day I find myself having thousands of questions, which usually fall into one of these categories: Trivial questions: Stuff that I've probably done before, but I'm just too lazy to remember. I ask google, and the first result shows my answer. This accoun...

08:17
There's a user systematically going through the back catalogue of questions, fixing their grammar and typos and improving the formatting of their code. I can't figure out whether I'm happy they're doing it (because the edits are generally good), or whether I'm annoyed that all these old posts from 2010 are hitting the front page again, displacing any actual new questions that might have been asked..
09:00
isn't the default sort on "newest"
or you just watch the "active"
oh wait I seee, the main page is on 'active', the 'questions' page is on 'newest'
09:43
Right. The edits aren't actually affecting most people's front page yet, I think, because the edits haven't actually been accepted yet. (There were about 40 of them, last I looked). But it's kind of startling to suddenly be greeted by a page of questions dating from 2010, many of which would be closed if they'd been asked today. ;)

Q: How can I have parent-child transform in a component system?

andrewBefore when using inheritance, I could draw all my objects using this recursive function: void Object::innerDraw(sf::RenderTarget& target, sf::RenderStates states) { states.transform *= Object::getTransform(); //translate by this object's position this->Draw(target, states); //dra...

everyone's having nothing but problems with the component system and because of the hype, no one's really suggesting anything else
is that really the kind of thing that should be a part of this community?
10:14
The problem, as with other design patterns, is that people find the pattern first and then try to apply it to a problem
11:00
I've never worked with a strict component system like everyone's talking about. Can't speak to how to architect such a thing. Seems like absurd over-engineering for most projects, to me.

@TrevorPowell from what I've seen, it is exactly that
I've tried to use different variations of it, only to fail miserably by losing interest in updating the code because of the overhead that is added from the system
Greetings. I have an issue that I fear is too general/vague for the main site, and could really benefit from a trained eye. I'm having an issue with 2D sprite movement that is not sufficiently smooth for some reason.
And we're talking javascript game engine.
Anyone who'd like to give it a look, it would be greatly appreciated.
we can't look at it if we don't know where to look
Obviously.
I was looking for volunteers first.
While it's not my code, I have something very similar to mntdn.montaudou.in/games/tutoSpaceInvaders/part3 going on.
The left/right arrow keys are moving the spaceship there 4 pixels each frame, and the end result is rather... odd.
Something is missing to make the motion smooth.
And I'm hoping that someone more trained in such issues could tell what the something is from how the issue looks.
could be some vsync issue
if browser controls framerate, there's probably no way to get rid of this
When you say vsync issue, I imagine you believe it to be missing?
14:18
no
well, sometimes
it all really needs cooperation to work nicely
Cooperation with the...?
game code
if vsync is used, frame time cannot exceed a certain number, so that no frames are skipped
if vsync is not used, delta time must be correctly measured and applied at all times, as well as the interpolation between game states, if it's necessary
since I haven't seen a truly smooth browser game, I'd say that there are some inconsistencies between frames in the rendering engines of browsers
I took a look at the engine's code, and it does attempt to measure the framerate and act accordingly.
But in general I fear that what you say is true and there isn't a sensible standardized solution yet.
yeah, looks like it
I guess I'll just stop obsessing.
14:22
it would also be nice to see a non-browser game for a change :p
the native developer crowd is enjoying full benefits of the hardware :P
It's an easter egg for a site I'm working on :)
So my hands are rather tied.
heh
make a native plug in! people love installing random plugins for easter eggs!
Of course they do :P
@melak47 "free stuff"
that always works (well, kind of)
though I'd prefer a plugin (non-random, though) to the in-browser solutions anytime
(except flash and java, they suck royally)
unity's cool & native client's cool, from what I've seen
14:33
I'd consider Unity, but that would mean I'd have to actually be capable of using it.
I am definitely not there yet.
14:50
for an easter egg, nothing's as good as the native (in-browser) stuff :P
but for anything bigger... unity's quite easy to use

Hello?

@Abe hi?

I'm afraid this isn't even amusing anymore: gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/48211/…
is there an API for retrieving some data from GD.SE?
I'd like to count the amount of ECS questions vs other questions
ah, found one of the smaller problems: gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/entity-system
this definition is just plain wrong
"entity system" shouldn't imply any architecture
"entity system" = "system that revolves around entities" or anything like that
but out of the f**king blue, I see "components" and "systems" (which have some special meaning that isn't even further explained)
not to mention the problem with having something as simple as a tag
tags should be nothing but categories for experts to identify themselves with
so for example, if I add a "direct3d" tag, I'd like to hear the opinion of people who know exactly what "direct3d" is and have quite a lot of experience with it
so by that logic, if I put "entity-system" there, whose attention exactly would I be seeking for?
it isn't a technology, it isn't a toolkit, it isn't a field of research
anyone can pass himself as an expert when it comes to something as intangible as a concept
tl;dr: I don't like such tags and want to see them removed ASAP because of the reasons mentioned above :P
@snake5 there is, but I don't remember where I've seen it
@snake5 maybe this helps data.stackexchange.com/gamedev/queries
heh, this looks exactly like what I want, thanks
heh, I need only two more c++ upvotes to get it's badge

does anyone here know actionscript-3?
@Abe I can't think of anyone.
hmm, something's wrong with the query, I can't seem to be getting all of the results that exist
16:32
@what's wrong?
17:02
@Chunk-e-Yamani it doesn't catch the post I linked to a while back
17:38
our government is something else! remember I couldn't open/use many websites and I had to connect through a VPN connection? today they've announced soon they'll be selling VPN connections themselves!
lol
is that you, Gajoo?
@melak47 seems I've blown my cover :P
@melak47 actually I've wondering how you didn't figure that out sooner?
@Chunk-e-Yamani by not paying attention to chat. I'm very good at that :)
17:49
I'm looking for some online multiplayer competetive games - Xbox 360 or PC. Go!
@ToddersLegrande what genre?
Any genre really. Not CoD or BF3 though
I'm considering just practicing Starcraft 2
But I was interested in potentially trying something new (for me)
@ToddersLegrande try OpenTTD, not so competitive yet not so cooperative either!
OpenTTD has online multiplayer?
yep,
players practically build their own company, but sometimes (almost always) you'll have to fight against other companies to get more benefits.
17:54
Huh
18:29
I think I'm gonna do the SC2 campaign and then try to get better at SC2
Just in time for Heart of the Swarm
19:00
@ToddersLegrande so you didn't like OpenTTD?
Didn't try it
doesnt look like my cup of tea though
not the competetive im looking for anyway
@ToddersLegrande I'm pretty sure it's not.
@ToddersLegrande I personally prefer Turn-Based-Strategies though,
don't like action that much.
19:18
Well I like turned base as well. Love Civ 5
But yeah... for competetive games I'm thinking something more action based
