can someone comment on this: if I get an external SSD, is Thunderbolt enough faster to be worth the cost over a USB 3 one?
my computer has both usb3 and thunderbolt 2 ports

@Almo Depends on the reasonable output you can get out of that SSD and your usage and which version of Thunderbolt.
USB 3 is 5Gb/s, 3.1 gen2 is 10Gb/s
Thunderbolt 1 is 20Gb/s, 2 is also 20Gb/s, 3 is 40Gb/s

And if that wasn't confusing enough, USB-C ports can carry Thunderbolt signals so it's possible (I don't know if they actually exist) to have a USB-C external drive that supports all of these.
As long as the device and the motherboard support it and the moons of Saturn align perfectly...
@Almo I'm looking at a basic 512GB SSD and "Sequential reads/writes up to 550 / 460 MB/s"
So for this guy any of the above ports/protocol/speeds would be reasonable.
Even the 5Gb/s USB 3.0 would have very little impact. I'd say at worst you'd get 75% of the theoretical SDD speed (which you'd almost never get in practice anyway even if it was plugged directly to SATA)
@Almo The question would be more: Do you prefer to keep your USB 3 ports available, or do you prefer to be able to plug your external HDD to any computer with USB ports?
