Reminded me I still haven't gone and tagged those physically based rendering questions... never found a tag wording I was super happy with. The most popular answer had just one vote.
Peanut Butter Rendering?
PB & Jraffics
I have made it my mission to incept it into every dev out there so that every time they see "PBR" they'll think "Peanut Butter Rendering" first.
Maybe I'll put a shader named PBR in my engine and it'll just make everything look like peanut butter no matter what texture or setting you use.
00:15
I would award you Internet Points and a peanut-based candy of your choice for this. :)
Speaking of... [snags a Reese from the trick-or-treaters bowl and struggles to unwrap it with a monster hand]
@StephaneHockenhull That's going to be an Easter Peanut Butter Egg?
01:13
Actually, there'd be only one setting that actually work: the smooth-chunky slider.
01:30
You're making me want to write this shader.

Good lord I need to clean up some old code. It is so bad.
Behold!
using UnityEngine;
using System.Collections;
using UnityEngine.UI;

public class InventoryManager : MonoBehaviour
{

public Rigidbody Cube;
public Rigidbody RectangularPrism;
public Rigidbody TriangularPrism;
public Rigidbody Cone;
public Rigidbody Tourus;
public Rigidbody Token;

public int CubesAmount;
public int RectangularPrismsAmount;
public int TriangularPrismsAmount;
public int ConesAmount;
public int TourusesAmount;

public Text CubesAmountCountText;
public Text RectangularPrismsAmountCountText;
Truth be told I haven't coded anything in like over a year. I think I need to brush up on my C#.
@Sie I think it's common, don't worry :) hehe
02:12
Streak over :P
You'll get your chance again :P
No. it's over. Life will never be the same again. I have reached my peak. The only way is down now.
colours hair black
All is darkness
Darn. I got only 4 / 13.
Sie
Sie
30% tho
02:26
@StephaneHockenhull when I hear PBR I think of the beer
@Sie I only got 1, and that's the Pikachu, and I am not sure if I ever had one in the games....
Not even steam or a YT account?
Sie
Sie
I didn't get that part either.
I don't get why Steam is on the list tho. That's like putting donuts on there.
"goth kid" stereotypes, as perceived by jocks I guess
02:30
@StephaneHockenhull nope
"What do goths like? Anime I guess.. what's an anime? that pikachu thing right?"
@Jimmy Pikachu also could cover the video games, board game, card games, comics, and books
And toys
it's really not indicative of goth/emo tho. at most I've seen 1 out of 10 in gaming groups fitting the goth/emo style :P
Seem they were desperate and reaching to add things to their starter pack...
Also not sure if the far right girl represents the necklace, hair, glasses, facial expression, or all the above
02:38
I guess that's the new goth generation :P
The MLP Twilight goth :D
yah, I think if we're gonna stereotype/caricature, MLP would be more common than pikachu.
Maybe it's a regional trend

@StephaneHockenhull or why pikachu or pencils are on there.

Morning!
user92578
good day
Is peanut butter and banana a thing, outside, like, here..?
user92578
even plain peanut butter isn't a thing here
been a long time since I've had peanut butter on banana
Hehe ok!
@ChrisMcFarland I typically eat banana slices on peanut butter spread on a toast. That's part of my breakfast.
11:50
Yum
I think so, but that could sound awkward at first.
12:12
long as it's not human flesh or domestic pets, you could probably put peanut butter on anything
here is a little networking video I took this evening: youtu.be/Lgneosa5hWk
12:43
You can put it in domestic pets. It's hilarious.
@ChrisMcFarland Nice!
Few things funnier than watching a dog try to get all the PB stuck to the roof of his mouth for 5 minutes then ask for more :D
@ChrisMcFarland oh, cross platform too!
user92578
damn that's fucking awesome Chris
13:16
I've been able to profile the way I wanted yesterday night, but it doesn't work anymore... VS2017 does not collect the data during sampling.
13:48
@StephaneHockenhull I found some cat/peanut butter vids
pretty funny
user92578
Aww yeah, unnecessary member & method comments removed
i thought you had removed a GDSE member and his comments on a method... oh you mean in your code.
user92578
lol yeah

Meta people don't want Halloween masks :(
Typical *Exchange response..
If it's any consolation, I like the idea.
It makes sense though
if you read the top voted answer
Is he saying it's a good idea, but pointless as there isn't enough visitors to make it worthwhile
The responses are mature and fair, I'm just offended by the downvotes.
@nwp Remember I was talking about rearranging the data to perform a costly process over it last week (to reduce the impact of cache misses)? With a lot of iterations, I get an improvement of 12% in time it takes to perform it, but the overhead to convert a data structure to the other takes away a big chunk of it, so overall, I get an improvement of only 2%. Which is interesting, but not really worth to put in the main app as a quick fix.
:(
15:11
@Almo Yeah, I can see why they do it like that, and that's fine. It's just going to bring less joy to the world :P
:D
@ShaunWild Yeah, that's the way it goes I guess. Someone had to ask.
nwp
nwp
@AlexandreVaillancourt Is the project accessible (like on github)?
@nwp No, it's at work and we don't work on public code, unfortunately.
16:11
@JoshPetrie Are technology recommendation questions welcome on GDNet?
It's part of the "how to get started" and these things tend to get stales and be religious / opinion-based
People's tendency of having their own choice of software be validated by other people's usage of it.
user4704
@AlexandreVaillancourt Sure, generally.
@StephaneHockenhull Yeah, that's why they're considered off-topic here, But the question is about gamedev.net, where we often redirect users asking off-topic stuff here :)
@JoshPetrie Ok, thanks!
I have a feeling that this question will be popular.
16:18
anyway, somewhere in the middle of this gradient is where we get good software suggestions:
I use this software because no one uses it and so I'm special and unique <------------> I use this software because I'm smart because everyone uses it so it certainly is the right choice, right? right?
Thankfully there's usually good suggestions among the noise, it's just a lot to sift through :P
@StephaneHockenhull Between the emo and the pop fan :p
@AlexandreVaillancourt I could have sworn we'd answered it before, but haven't found a direct duplicate to flag yet.
@JoshPetrie I guess it should be closed as a duplicate?
@AlexandreVaillancourt I have a great idea to answer this question but it'll have to wait until I'm home :(
16:32
@StephaneHockenhull Does it involve Zelda?
It could involve Zelda but not necessarily.
I just need my camera and my kids box of arts&crafts :P
Oh and a printer
@JoshPetrie I think that question is asking something a bit different, about the architecture of abstracting "which part of the image corresponds to this entity (sprite)" from "what are the pixel contents of the image (texture)" - while the new one looks like a pure terminology clarification, to my reading.
I could google for premade/stock images but I'd rather post original content when I can :P
This sounds amazing. :D
@DMGregory Yeah, thinking about it, I don't think they're duplicate either..
16:38
I think that new question is confusing terms due to some engine's naming of the concepts
Yeah, I get the sense they think textures are a whole new technology that replaced sprites.
Maybe add something about "sprite sheet" and "texture atlas" being synonymous with the only difference being the intended usage of a sprite sheet being to draw sprites but is still a texture atlas.
What do you guys think about tags of that question? Are texture and sprite meta-tags in this case?
sure
It's about textures, sprites, and terminology.
@StephaneHockenhull That one we've had: gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/69895/…
That older question Josh linked falls into a category I'm never sure what to do with: "Yep, your plan sounds sensible... what problem do you need help solving?"
I get the sense sometimes users just want validation or permission to proceed, but I don't know what's a high-quality / useful-to-future-users way to answer that.
17:01
@S.TarıkÇetin Not meta; can a 'texture' texture expert give a decent answer? Sure! What about a 'sprite' expert? That too! At least that's the way I see it.
user4704
@DMGregory Yeah.
@AlexandreVaillancourt Thanks, that's a handy way to frame it. :) I'll keep that in mind.
17:22
@AlexandreVaillancourt How about dr.pepper expert?
@AlexandreVaillancourt Sounds reasonable.
That seems redundant. If you have a doctorate in Pepper, then I think it goes without saying that you're an expert.
@DMGregory That's a way to think about it. The help page says "Tags are a means of connecting experts with questions they will be able to answer by sorting questions into specific, well-defined categories. ". Josh has recently commented on that, though. (Sorry for the double ping.)
2
Not really, you can legally call yourself Dr without a doctorate. Can't call yourself a nurse tho without certification but Dr is fine from what I've looked up.
or if you're like The Orb, you call yourself DR Alex Paterson, and everyone thinks you have a PhD. But his name is "Duncan Alexander Robert Paterson" :D
17:34
I think there's no law in Canada and USA regulating the title itself.
yeah
MD is regulated for sure though :D

Q: Where to purchase multitrack music loops?

ArcaneLightI've seen other questions about where to find royalty-free music available for purchase. But most of these tend to provide a single audio file with every instrument track already blended and mixed together. I'm more interested in the dynamic music route, and would want to download a bundle of aud...

the SO question close vote thing says "or links to off-site resources"
do we also close for these requests?
if so, maybe we should try to get the text of the close vote altered.
user92578
Yes, too broad
@Almo I flageed it for primarily opinion since it could turn into "whcih one is the best?" sort of deal
I'd like it if we had SO's close reason for this. "Questions asking us to recommend or find a book, tool, software library, tutorial or other off-site resource are off-topic for Stack Overflow as they tend to attract opinionated answers and spam. Instead, describe the problem and what has been done so far to solve it. "
21:09
I think we're at our limit for custom close reasons. Maybe it would be worth starting a meta thread on proposed rewordings of our existing custom reasons to try to better address common cases we're seeing?
Aside, I thought I'd already seen a question about where to find multi-track music / stems a month or two ago... not finding it though. (My search-fu may simply be weak today)
22:00
When I want to be able to draw different segments of a string in different colours I can either store the colour-data with the vertices (3byte colour-data per point) or change shader-uniforms for each segment. One is storage-intensive, the other has a big impact on computation-time;; or is there a third alternative?
@DMGregory
Hmmm... a 3rd texture coordinate pointing into a palette ramp?
Sorry, wrong linkl
@Bálint I'd say that's a response backed up with enough evidence to be worth upvoting as an answer. :) — DMGregory 3 hours ago
Ahhh, it's hideous! XD
You know, my "evidence" was opening Wikipedia to make sure I at least get the terminology right
I did a bit of research though, I'll post the answer in a minute
22:04
Haha. What I mean is it wasn't "no, because I say so" - you gave reasons and identified specific issues a solution would need to address.
Oh, right
Thanks
23:14
So it doesn't auto-corner yet?
23:25
Looks like it's in 2017.2 youtube.com/watch?v=Fi9dHD7TTpY Or are there differences between this and what they presented in 2015? I haven't gone through point-by-point yet.
@DMGregory That's some of the features, not all yet though
I'll have to go check myself
does it works with 3D tiles?
@StephaneHockenhull If they implemented it since, then it should
I'd be surprised if it does - promotion I've seen around the feature has been exclusively talking about 2D uses.
But you might be able to hack it to use the 2D editor as a tool to generate the map data to then place your 3D tiles in a corresponding way.
@DMGregory The last video shows the guy using it for 3d
23:30
Oops, I missed it, thanks!
Yeah, oneboxes don't show when it points to a certain time in the video
@Bálint No, that's a flat plane. I mean with 3D tiles for the free-shape vector platforms.
Oh, right
Nope, only 2d
At least I think
It's pretty hard to get the whole feature set from an hour long presentation video
I love that it almost crashes when he puts 100 campfires :P
@StephaneHockenhull It's a tradition in the computing industry to fail miserably at presentations
23:42
Ah the famous USB scanner BSOD shot :D
Ahh, looks like it's working the way I'd mentioned earlier - the built-in stuff is only managing the 2D tilemap, and it's a custom script that's hooking into that API for drawing and then spawning its own 3D prefabs.

Q: Would this question be considered off-topic?

The Mattbat999This question was asked recently, and has seemed to have brought up confusion in Game Development. Though, to me, seems off-topic, there aren't any flag descriptions that actually match to this question. How should this question be dealt with, if there is need for action?

Asked this on meta about that one question that seems off topic, but isn't at the same time

@TheMattbat999 if you paste in the bare question link, it automatically converts to the question title. i prefer to do that because people will see a hundred "this question" links on meta, but active users will already know the question by the title if they get to see it.
where to find X is generally off topic, and it's categorized as "too broad" because evaluating the answers is subjective and the entire question turns into a bunch of links rather than a standalone source of information
23:52
@doppelspooker ok
personally I would have put it under "where to get started" close-reason
it's actually a fairly well-worded and thought-out question I think
just sadly not in scope for this site
@StephaneHockenhull well, as I said in the Meta post, it doesn't really fall under one category of off-topic
There's been a few games that have used "Pure Data" to do their dynamic sound tracks.
@Jimmy it is
23:58
And it's free. So it's kind of like gimp: great value for the price, pay in time you take to learn it :P
