@jgallant I'm pretty sure you helped making r/PlaceHearts become /rPlacehFarts
Hi everyone, any idea why launching GTAVLauncher.exe for starting the GTAV using Nvidia NSight HUD v5.2 crashes after 10 seconds or so? Here's the screenshots superuser.com/questions/1195165/…
DH.
DH.
No idea and this is for Game Development, for gaming there is Arqade
DH.
DH.
Except if you are trying to mod GTA, but in any case I wouldn't see why you would use NSight tho...
To see how they lay out the textures
@MonaJalal Don't they have some kind of anti-cheat? I'd assume that would get in the way a bit
DH.
DH.
01:45
It's not my strong point, so I can't complain if she is trying to use that for modding and stuff
Yeah, they're probably detecting the debugger or attached process and crashing intentionally
02:12
@MickLH I want to use NSight for frame analaysis and seeing depth map/shader map/texture/ and stuff in the gbuffer. I don't want to use NSight for modding.
the game itself suggests me to be started by NSight when I right click on it
is there a chatroom for gaming.stackexchange.com ?
also I hope this is not very unrelated but I don't know how to attach a game to Visual Studio Graphics Debugger stackoverflow.com/questions/43196408/… do you know how can it be done?
I downloaded Nvidia NSIGHT from here developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-nsight-visual-studio-edition
The game isn't suggesting to be started by NSight.
NSight itself adds that option to all programs.

@Tyyppi_77 What's crackin
user92578
just woke up
me too haha
user92578
bunch of resolution-related issues left to fix for today, I'll try to smash through most of them today
2 hour nap... should give me enough energy for another 6 hours of coding til 2am
Fun
user92578
lol cool

YouTubers are all freaking out now that their ad revenue moneys is gone
Maybe you shouldn't build your entire source of income off a company like YouTube?
I always said what if YouTube just decided to stop paying?
All these people would end up having to find something else to do to survive
that's how life is
what if your employer goes belly up?
what if Steam said "sorry, no more games for anyone"
@jgallant That's what sponsors are for. Only the smaller channels and the ones that love burning bridges will be affected by this.
embrace an opportunity, but have an exit plan (or expect it to end), nothing's guaranteed it's gonna last forever
@JohnHamilton Sounds like the most system-ish propagandaey response ever
I think this is an attack on the power some YouTubers have over mainstream media
10:03
Basically you just said he's a terrorist if he doesn't remember where he was on 9/11
They hitjobbed pewdiepie a couple of weeks ago
YouTube doesn't provide actual value, it just wastes your time. It shouldn't be making money anyways.
Now they are attacking the entire platform
YouTube is tv 2.0
It provides value to a lot of people
I thought we all realized TV is bad already
There's life and stuff, you know? We have better technology than ever before, you can go anywhere in the world overnight.
Are you not entertained?
10:06
You can eat anything you've ever wanted to try
With whose money?
You can talk to anyone anywhere
Fuck YouTube... real life.
Youtube is the cheapest entertainment there is, that's why it's popular
But then what man child will I look up to?
cheapest = cheapest
10:07
you can still have a meal with cheap ingredients
That's not how I like to live life personally
I can get all the michelin-star-grade food for very cheap and in large quantities if I learned to cook it myself
And what the fuck is up with tutorials with a music track drowning out what they are saying?
How stupid can you be?
lol people need to hide from their own voice
That you sit there and tell others how to do things properly when you clearly are incapable of it
10:09
Did you watch new rick and morty?
Yeah lol
The only reason I saved you part was amazing
He's a spy. Kill him. I'm gonna go take a shit.
I'm gonna get that sauce Morty even if it takes me burp 9 more seasons Morty
So yeah I just googled how to adjust volume level in Adobe premier
It's literally an option under Clip, music, adjust gain
But this video wad the top result
I think McDonalds might even bring the sauce back
Do you guys think one minute with no sign of life is a good time to kill the connection?
It feels plenty safe against walking through bad reception, but would it be a pain to wait 1 full minute for someone to lag out if they crash?
Is 30 seconds too aggressive? Is it still too long??
10:18
depends on the situation
Depends on the game too
@MickLH If you were on the table, how many seconds would you want?
depends on the amount of szechuan sauce you have in reserve.
I wouldn't want a friend of mine to get dropped off an RTS if at all possible, but if it was something like rainbow 6, even 10 seconds is too many seconds
Ohh are we talking about game connections lol
10:19
I assumed we were, I'm not sure
i thought this was about speed dating
The technically feasible limit before the reliability scheme starts to fall apart is somewhere between 30 minutes and a few hours
As in, if someone tripped over the Ethernet cable but plugged it back in 2 hours later the game shouldn't drop the connection
But then if someone crashes they will be "lagging" status for hours
message pop up to client "Are you still there?"
"Well are you?"
"No?"
"Okay then... BUH BYEEEE"
What kind of a game system are we talking about?
hmm I could flip that over to the other side, since we wouldn't get the message back when the stream is interrupted, we could ask "Are they still there?"
10:24
in the technical side of things we call that a heartbeat
the issue I'm concerned with is when no packets at all get through though
after no sign of life for a while, when do you cut it off and say the socket is dead?
Let the client send packets every 15 seconds saying "I'm alive!"
If you have four or more packets missing, kill it
Assume they are dead unless they can prove otherwise.
That really is dependent on the game though
That's already handled, I've invented something I call a Governer function that deals with that much more robustly
10:26
So what genre is the game in then?
is the governer some kind of robot with weapons?>
My current game is a shooting game lol, but I don't want to have to re-write the netcode for stuff anymore, I'm making it a reusable lib
So, like I said the dropout time is really dependent on the game, if it's a shooting game 5+ seconds is a good time to drop people
otherwise they will be lagging up the server and that's not fun for anybody
I'm hesitant to go shorter than 30 seconds though
I'd even consider 3 seconds as a dropping point
10:29
I've seen the real life causes of 20 seconds of 100% packet loss in a row
Is it more lobby based?
It's your friend tripping over the cable, not something you'd want to end the game over
Sounds like you need a "reconnect" function in there
drop the person, keep the game going, let the person be "in the game but not active" for a while
and they can reconnect sometime later
I'm looking for pros and cons really
CivVI doesn't have that function and it just completely breaks the game for me because I sometimes end up having to replay 3-4 turns
rainbow six for example, lets players reconnect to ranked games but you get dropped after a while in casual for good
10:32
I see two options: Stay connected forever and deal with dead sockets, or drop the connection asap and deal with reconnecting.
Take the latter imho
I'm looking for solid pros and cons to evaluate
it'll be better for the user experience because 1 guy who lags and has to be dropped won't interfere with other people's gameplay
Stay connected forever really simplifies the game logic because then one player is one player
How gamebreaking is it if say 2 people disconnect though? game has teams?
or an entire LAN team of 5 gets disconnected, is the game gonna keep going?
10:34
@JohnHamilton One person lagging out will inevitable effect everyone's game, but either way it can be dealt with pretty well, so this pro applies to both options.
i'd say 30 seconds is a long time for no response.
ideally you'd let the player rejoin if he lost connection
if a client does not response within 30 seconds, fuck himn
@ChrisMcFarland This is exactly hitting on the hard problems
I mean if it's a ranked game then tough cookies, unless the other team chose to pause
but if you've got team auto-balancing
deadweight makes the still-connected players unhappy
Yeah and even 30 seconds is a bit lengthy to wait for the came to collapse
Yet 30 is uncomfortably short for dealing with real world issues
I'd rather keep trying for 1 minute, but offer the players a vote-end within 5 seconds
Voting is good
Sometimes people are friendly
10:40
or something at least, it would ruin the game to lose a chunk of one team
but if someone camps for 5 seconds and walks their laptop to another room, through a no WiFi reception zone, that would suck to have game over from doing that
It seems like something is in direct conflict and it's bothering the fuck out of me
Ok there's an elegant solution but it's nothing to do with timing and networking
If I just use "press a button to respawn" then I can ignore it if they go silent on their inputs
Worst case scenario they lag out and stand still until they die, then wait dead until they reconnect
I loved the old Counter-Strike lag sound, the water splashing
made zero sense as to why that sound was chosen, but was good
11:25
Approved for release
obviously, gotta beat you to the store so I can say neeeeneeerrrrr i got two games and you don't
then. when you release tallowmere 2 -- i'll have picross touch color already up -- and i'll be like hahahahaha i have 3 games and you only have 2
11:48
I might as well quit now
I was hoping I'd have enough content to justify some videos and screenshots before Greenlight goes away, but I imagine I'll hit up Steam Direct instead later on
Steam direct will probably be easier to get in from, they seem to be trying to actually better the platform
yeah
I'd happily pay $5k if they decide to make it that steep
(sounds like they want that to be recoverable though at least)
Seems like they're trying to involve the community more instead of filtering the games that can get in
yeah it sounds good
5K would suck for people that just want to make games for people for free
11:55
yeah, what would be the deciding factor behind that then though?
Valve doesn't want to decide
@jgallant if they want to make a game for people for free then they don't need to be on a store front
I think it is going to be more scrutinized -- where they will request studios to registers formally
And yeah the price is going to restrict hobbyist from being a part of the mix
They are running a store and they are noticing it getting flooded with shit -- and are responding accordingly

hmm, getting 20fps on my crappy laptop
user92578
all though I'm fairly sure that the laptop has an integrated gpu
17:40
@Tyyppi_77 wtf is the 1920x1080 large trading card image for?
user92578
It's the image that opens when you click the trading card
user92578
The smaller one is supposed to be just a "zoomed in" version of the larger one
user92578
Click on one of your trading cards if you're confused
user4704
Do you have cool badge names?
user4704
I hate it when badge names are "Level1" through "Level5."
user92578
17:58
I went with enemy names, not especially cool but better than Level 1 - Level 5
user4704
Yeah.
user4704
Much better.
user92578
I'm sad because you can't award yourself the foil badge :(
user4704
heh
user4704
I would hate to get one of those.
user4704
18:02
It would muck up my completionist OCD.
user4704
I get the level 5 badge for any game I get 100% of the achievements on, and exclusively through profit on trading cards I get for games I won't/can't 100%.
user92578
lol
user4704
If I got a foil card I'd sell it simply because I have no criteria for when I would get that badge that differs from getting any other badge.
user4704
And I would be sad.
user4704
And be forced to make a new Steam account and start all over!
user92578
18:03
:D
user92578
My foil badge is so cool imho, I might have to buy that stuff
I want to make trading cards, but holy shit man its complicated.
emoticons, badges, cards, borders, wtf
the templates they provide are shit
user4704
I honestly don't really see the point of any of it.
user4704
The profile backgrounds, the emotes, the extra friend list entries... it's just... why?
user92578
I didn't even use the templates
user4704
18:08
I sell all of it.
user92578
But yeah it's a lot of assets to make
user92578
It seemed really overwhelming to me too
18:45
Does anyone have any tip for converting gif to webm and keeping the alpha layer?
gif has an alpha layer?
yeah gif does not have an alpha layer
@Almo i don't know if that's the correct term but it can at least have transparency.
you can select one of the colors in the palette to be transparent
@Almo you mean on the gif? or webm? The gif is already transparent, i just need to convert it to webm and keep the transparency. Of if that's not possible, recreate the transparency
I'm not sure how to add transparency to a video anyway, which is why i just wanted to convert
gif does not have a transparency "layer" or an alpha channel. you can select one color in the palette to be transparent. if your webm converter doesn't understand that, then I don't know what to tell you
18:52
ok
there just aren't a lot of tutorial out there on doing alpha in webm, i was hoping someone had done it
@maxple use a yuva mode instead of default yuv modes
for a webm you probably want VP9 codec with yuva420p pixel format
cool except I've not heard of any of those things before unfortunately
@MickLH are those just config options I can pass to the converter?
ok i'll dump this over here too.
@maxple I charge pretty steep hourly, but you could google it yourself!
Considering I know basically nothing about media codecs, it would be financially worth it for me to hire someone for a solution
if it really is so easy then it shouldn't be much
19:06
What drives these assumptions of things being "so easy"?
"google it yourself"
it's all good though
Duh it's all good
Yeah
I gave you a precise pixel format, if a precise answer is not enough then why did you ask at all?
lol this is starting to turn into "the child who does not know enough to ask". I didn't realize that was a pixel output or anything

Q: Convert PNGs to webm video with transparency

sebastianI would like to use avconv to convert a series of PNG images to a WebM video, preserving transparency. I understand that the pixel format used in the output video must support transparency. So I tried: $ avconv -framerate 25 -f image2 -i frames/%03d.png -pix_fmt yuva420p output.webm Unfortunat...

user92578
Looks like a solid starting point
19:25
achievement badges
user92578
Those look awesome
thanks, i think they are pretty decent
very nice jon
19:38
@VarvaraKalinina always nice to have someone around who likes learning new things :)
maybe I shouldn't say "always" but usually lol
user92578
lol
user92578
Is that an insult to the rest of us? ;)
hahaha
nah you guys are awesome
user92578
:D
@Tyyppi_77 what's your rate for damage control operations? :P
user92578
19:48
huh?
20:04
concept art for my next action adventurer
user92578
Great that you labeled the stuff
user92578
For a moment there I was like
user92578
Which one is the stick?
cloud saves working
just ran the game from laptop and lo and behold all the shit is saved
user92578
cool
20:08
who wants a dev key?
beta key sorry
i need some beta testers.
20:49
No one wants to be a beta tester on GORB steam?
@jgallant .
you got steam?
lol serious? everyone has steam even if they hate it
u want a gorb key or not?
jon. send me a gorb key.

is there a linux build or should I fire up the windows machine?
no linux build yet.
Clear Data doesn't work atm apparently
@jgallant It loads and shows one frame the main menu and crashes out on wine
I'll give you an update when I get to my windows 7 machine
oh wait
ok still closes itself even with steam ingame UI disabled
@DH. wake up it's another one
21:43
does anyone know how to increase the max file size in android studio?
21:54
@S.Neut you mean anyone besides this guy who comes up first when I literally just right click the last few words of your message and click Google?

Q: File size exceeds configured limit (2560000), code insight features not available

FlashI am trying to work on a large Javascript file in Jetbrains WebStorm 8 and I am getting a message at the top of the editing window that says: File size exceeds configured limit (2560000). Code insight features not available. How can I increase the 'configured limit' to get access to all fea...

I've seen that smartiepants but that doesn't do the trick for me
@S.Neut You really missed it. The point wasn't the joke you took as an insult, the point was that if you had a specific problem you still never said it (even now) and so how would anyone even know what "max file size" refers to when you haven't even given a wink of context
be careful using sarcasm when you're not talking face to face
also I think we mostly like making and talking about games here, when platform issues come up it's often just complaints lol
but now that you so handily googled my last few words, you have a whole lot of context
21:59
@S.Neut with at best 1/3rd probability...
there's a few equally likely googles I could have copy pasted from there that lead to different contexts
(I check these things because I think it's interesting)
in fact, arguably the canonical would be the entire message, or starting from the "how" forward
...which both lead to completely different topics
you're already asking me to combine psychology and SEO just to understand your query
Interesting - reg = intestin
you seem to be perfectly capable of doing that my friend
don't do that it's annoying and most people aren't gonna bother to reverse engineer your thought cipher lol
I mean do whatever you want but that doesn't motivate me to think about an answer, android studio is basically traumatic memories for me to go to
why is that?
I mean a totally ambiguous question wouldn't fly on the main site, describe your actual issue. I'm just being a nice person pointing out that you don't have to waste your time waiting for an answer without doing that first
also I'm not sure if this is the right channel for that anyways :P
22:11
my fix was a bloody restart...
My brain seemed to forget how computers work for a moment
you mean you forgot how they don't* work :P
you've peeked my curiosity now though, why is android studio traumatic for you?
because that was the tool getting through the financial bad times lol
22:56
hello i have a question, does anyone know a tutorial that teaches to rotate sprite like this but with mouse instead?
Did you check out my mouse sprite rotate tutorial?
u have tutorials?
i didnt knew you made tutorials
@jgallant cant find it here
