00:01
Time to kick your gamedev dreams into high gear :D
yup, pretty much
But first, my resume, and some applications out
I'll be able to squeeze some time into Execute() though, ;)
As long as Factorio doesn't suck it all up. Damn that game is addictive
It really is :P
Jon
Jon
its on my steam wishlist
if anyone wants to buy it for me
Don't get it.
You'll end up like the rest of us.
You're finally productive. Stay at it!
Jon
Jon
anyone own Ultimate Chicken Horse?
00:08
:( I'm at like 215 hrs in Factorio
Jon
Jon
holy fucken hell
139 hours here :P
Jon
Jon
you could have made 2 games
UCH, is that the platformer where you add one piece at a time and let your friend try to beat it?
Jon
Jon
yes
My son has been annoying me to buy it
00:09
heh, cool
I only know if it because they had a really cool video about transition frames
Jon
Jon
ah yeah? link?
looking ...
Jon
Jon
i mean, it looks fun
I will more than likely buy it
Jon
Jon
thx
00:11
I've been looking for that video forever, but I couldn't remember the name of the game
Jon
Jon
lol
simple yet effective
holy fuck his animation machine in unity LOL
Yeah, no kidding
Jon
Jon
Like, i've made intricate animations in unity
Never have I gotten to a state machine that looked like this shit, lol
lol, yeah
It you have all of these intermediate stages like they do in this game I guess it could get complicated eh?
Looks amazing though
Jon
Jon
Yeah, but still
You could use sub-states
this seems really ridiculous
this was a complicated character animation
still maintanable... that screenshot above... shit man that looks like a mess :D
00:22
yeah, it does
Jon
Jon
Gonna get it next week more than likely anyways, i'll let you know if it is good
looks like a decent party game
Isn't UCH from a gamejam though? Things get messy fast :P
hahah, yes, and true
Jon
Jon
true and that is why i have not purchased
but my kid has been really into this damn thing
and quite frankly, when I see a state machine like that
I don't really want to buy it more
Jon
Jon
00:30
given a year, I could make that game amazing
Hey wanna hear a joke?
!false
its funny, cuz its true :P
00:48
This is getting frustrating.
I need to serialize an object to a generic XmlElement. All the different approaches I've used aren't working.
Maybe I need to sleep. It's almost 3 am.
Jon
Jon
smiles are free
a generic xml element... as in a string?
@WilliamMariager what you workin in
easy as pie with C#/.NET
Jon
Jon
yeah man
then use the .NET XMLSerializer I think it's called
Jon
Jon
00:51
i do this shit all the time
what do you need to do, i can help
Yeah, but with strong types.
I have a member of the type "XmlElement". I need to stuff a serialized object into it.
Jon
Jon
lol, in this case I would suggest you write your own serializer
and deserializer
much easier
Yeah, I can make it work with LINQ to XML easily.
But I can't see why it has to be this difficult.
Jon
Jon
doesn't have to be
The code is generated by a Visual Studio tool.
00:53
you sure you want to use XML though?
I figuired it'd work.
I usually use JSON for this shit
@Almo, Not up to me :)
Jon
Jon
personally i don't typically go with built in serializers
ah ok :)
00:54
@Jon Well, the definitions are generated from xsd's, and are made to work with the XmlSerializer. It works great and is fully validated. I just need to figure out this issue. :P
I'll see if I can use a mix tomorrow. Get the typesafe/validated features with a tiny unsafe part to tack it on.
Night!
Sie
Sie
I get the feeling I've angered @Almo.
Have I?
Jon
Jon
@Sie relax he hates everyone equally
Sie
Sie
So do your kids have any interest in game development? Unity would be a great start if they were.
Anyone knows of a Caesar/Caesar II style game? I think I need a fix :| (Steam/windows)
Sie
Sie
01:11
Never heard of it. What's it like?
Okay, time to start doing the fun stuff:-)
Sie
Sie
I will now be internally jealous of you for that fact. Goes back to coding level manager.
@Sie Hmm, basically, a city builder taking place in Antique Rome!
Sie
Sie
@AlexandreVaillancourt Well there are no shortage of city builder games.
Stronghold maybe?
Stronghold is more like AoE, which I suppose is another one you could look at.
Caesar has a somewhat unique style. It's somewhat of a Sim City meets Age of Empires.
It's been a while since I've played them, but I liked them from what I recall.
Jon
Jon
aren't you like 8?
Sie
Sie
Me?
Jon
Jon
yeah
Sie
Sie
01:17
yeah
Sie
Sie
him
Jon
Jon
she?
Sie
Sie
the ward?
Jon
Jon
wizard of ward
01:18
I remember playing Caesar as a teenager, and it seemed like an old game then.
Sie
Sie
Any horror game fans in here? Not like FNAF garbage. Like Amnesia, Penumbra, and games like that.
I don't remember it as being an old game!
Sie
Sie
Earliest one that came out was in '92.
Caesar is a city-building computer game where the player undertakes the role of a Roman governor, building ancient Roman cities. Released in 1992 on the Amiga, ported the next year to Atari ST, PC and Macintosh, the game was similar to SimCity. In addition to similar graphics and user interfaces, it also came with issues of micromanagement, including complicated city-planning requirements such as building the right number of schools, theaters, libraries, bathhouses, and other amenities, within suitable distances of residential areas. == Differences from SimCity == Notable differences of Caesar...
I would just get Caesar 3, amzn.to/1XXOJyQ
Jon
Jon
01:20
@Almo that is in unity :)
Yeah, that fits my timeline. I remember playing it around 2000.
There is a remake of caesar III in the works there!
Yeah, that one.
Sie
Sie
Anyone know of a good clip on or stand up mic? I got one with my new headphones but it sucks.
What I'm doing now is working on my pricing model.
The initial pricing model will be fairly easy, updating it with time will take some careful thought...
Jon
Jon
01:24
here is my mic stand :)
Sie
Sie
I know that is like your pride and joy.
Jon
Jon
yeah man, its amazing
it works so well I am set
thank you rock band
01:40
@Sie haha no
@Jon copy of wizard of wor.
Jon
Jon
yeah lol
Sie
Sie
01:55
cool @almo
Seriously though. Any mic recommendations?
I was gonna recommend this Logitech USB mic I use, works flawlessly + good sound
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Desktop-Microphone-Black-Silver/dp/B00009EHJV
but it looks like it's been discontinued
Err what? Logitech discontinuing products?
Just a guess
out of stock at newegg
jacked up price @ amazon
Jon
Jon
02:14
doesn't look like a good mic either
a good mic has a larger receiving end
Sie
Sie
Yeesh. $150?
I was thinking around $80 max.
Jon
Jon
man this mouse is so good, I don't want to use shit mice anymore
Jon
Jon
O_O
@Sie tonor 35$
Jon
Jon
looks can be deceiving
Sie
Sie
As do the reviews.
Jon
Jon
yeah
what are you gonna record?
Sie
Sie
My beautiful monotone voice of course :P.
I'm going to use it for in game chat and development logs mostly though.
yeah that logitech mic was $20 NZD a few years ago, good for the price
dunno wtf that $150 price tag is doing haha
Sie
Sie
02:28
Usually Amazon undercuts most places online. I usually but from them for the sake of Prime though.
that's the one i have
Jon
Jon
what do you do with it?
voice chat mainly
Jon
Jon
with jay leno?
haha
02:37
@Jon Bedroom producers be like...
@Sie pffff XDK All Day
02:57
Hey just wondering if anyone thought there's any algorithms I should write up implementation guides for, I don't know how much longer I'll be around and I'd like to contribute something.
@MickLH Why will you not be around?
Sie
Sie
ya whats the matter?
03:13
@JoshPetrie @Byte56 I've removed most of the design tag from questions; there is only one left, and I can't edit it. If you guys feel that it should be cleaned and you can do it, go ahead :)
user4704
@AlexandreVaillancourt I retagged that last one with "multiplayer"
@JoshPetrie Thanks a lot!
@JoshPetrie For that tag, I simply deleted the tag for the on hold and the closed questions, and replaced the tag by something appropriate for those still opened, should I have replaced the tag correctly even on those closed and on hold?
user4704
When removing "bad" tags like that, I only replace it if its the only tag.
user4704
(because a question has to have at least one tag)
user4704
Otherwise I just remove it entirely.
03:19
All right!
Sie
Sie
04:16
I'm really surprised Unity doesn't have a revert to prefab feature (like the editor does).
05:07

Q: Should we merge the 'code-structure' and 'code-design' tags into the 'architecture' tag?

Alexandre VaillancourtIf we consider the description of architecture: How code is structured. [...] And the description of code-structure: Refers to ways of organizing code, so it can be easier to work with. And the description of code-design: (Yeah, there is none. And only 4 open questions.) Shou...

Today my VPS host just broke my servers to where they need physical access to recover then gave me the most inept technical support I've ever experienced. I think I just lost a month's worth of work to a shitty server host.
11:59
Hi
Hey, good morning
It's 9:30 pm heree..haha
Good morning to you too :-)
It's 0500 here, turning into a terrible workday even though it's a holiday weekend haha
haha, are most people here from the US?
Not at all, I'd say the minority of people here are US
Most are Canadian and Central European as far as I've seen
12:03
I'd go for a plurality.
I'm sure there's more people from outside the US here, but I bet the US has the most of any country.
It also kinda depends on the time of day, I'm usually on when it's normal work hours for europeans.
I'm usually not awake when most americans are awake
This is true as well.
I doubt there were many people from the western hemisphere at all 6 hours ago here.
that is unfortunate Matt :(
@ChrisMcFarland The server thing?
12:06
Yeah mate, I'm mostly upset because it's not just my work, it's my work for a client and it's not my fault at all but I'm going to have to take a cut for it.
yikes.
It's just hard to find a good virtualized server provider that has fair pricing and good reliability
I'm here to meet people with the same interest as me and hopefully make some friends.
Well Jeff, from what I've seen, this is an extremely welcoming chat for that
12:08
I've been in this room for almost 2 years now
Really? cool!
How did you evolve to not sleep?
;)
cranked the monitor brightness to 200
That'll do it
Well you see, people these days never stop looking at their technology? ;)
My highest records is 3:00 am
12:11
I hate server hosts, I've paid them a total of $140,000 this year and their support is still terrible
:| :(
Lots of bandwidth? or lots of servers?
At some point I'd love to just build servers and put them in a colocation
Lots of servers with lots of virtualized resources
Bandwidth isn't too expensive
Bandwidth is only 15% of the costs
It's the 800 virtual CPUs that's the big expense
What is your job?
12:14
Honestly, at this point, I've brought so many clients to their service I feel like I should get a cut of the revenue hahah
I dabble in systems programming, IT, security consulting, distributed services scaling, and such for making a living
Game development is my passion, but it doesn't pay the bills
I went to an Industry experience day once, and the guy told me he had been through 4 different companies and they all went bankrupt.
Game development*
I'm thinking of doing Computer Forensics but I dont think i can ding a job like that :(
Game Development is some of the most difficult industries to make any revenue at all, let alone profits
find*
yeah.
Computer forensics is quite fun
It's easier than you'd think
Really?. I dont mind sitting in front of a desktop and such for hours. I have a persistent personality..haha
12:20
Check out some defcon talks, they'll mention a lot of tools and practices of the trade of computer forensics
user92578
I'm watching a GDC talk about RL
Jon
Jon
I know all about computer forensics
oh really?
Not in a sarcastic way
Jon
Jon
Used to decommission fed hardware
had to ensure all data was purged... it was overkill
Was it hard?
Jon
Jon
12:24
5 pass overwrite, took like 2 hours per drive
Then we shredded them
lol
I'm thinking of getting a computer science degree at Swinburne Uni
lol
Jon
Jon
it is a good field to go into
it should remain relevant for years
unlike some other fields
It should be mentioned that it's fucking fun and pays well and you can fuck around during the boring parts
I asked a police about Computer Forensics and all the cybersecurity jobs at a Career Expo, and she told me they got them sorted. So I was kinda dissapointed.
Jon
Jon
Oh, a job in forensics, good fucken luck with that
those are scarce
12:26
haha
Jon
Jon
doesn't mean you can't do it -- you just need to stand out from the rest of the pack
i've already peaked, so i'm just waiting to die at this point
OH MY GOD. I JUST FIXED THE FUCKING SERVERS AND THEIR IT SUPPORT JUST WIPED ALL OF MY SERVERS KERNELS AND REPLACED THEM WITH A RECOVERY ISO TWO DAYS AFTER MY SUPPORT TICKET WAS REVOKED
Jon
Jon
sounds like a case of the mondays
I...
It's 0500 on a Sunday and this is how they respond
Jon
Jon
12:29
oh well, at least you know what is up
Looks like a need to find a new server provider
Any suggestions?
Jon
Jon
doom sountrack when viewed with spectrum analysis tool
Hail satan
12:33
It's nice, my game is now slowly being controlled by a config file.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Hopefully by the end of today I'll have all of my "magic constants" removed and placed in an XML file.
It's a good thing, because I can set up my tutorial using a different file.
So I can use the tutorial mode without hacking a bunch of functions.
And it'll allow for easier debugging too, I could add a debug mode file that turns on buildings earlier than they would normally show up, for instance.
Jon
Jon
modding support too
just hack the config
Yep, that too.
To each its own
12:37
Any ideas why I cant upload a picture onto here?
Jon
Jon
your points are too low
noob :P
user92578
@JeffTeoh Just post imgur links
StackExchange doesn't want spam accounts uploading russian porn
I just started using this website..ahah
Jon
Jon
aha, you admit you are a noob
12:38
@Jon it's best to own it
Technically I'm a noob
I've had this account for five years but have only really used it lately
Jon
Jon
Member for 7 years, 3 months

muahahahahaha
12:42
I forget how long I've had an account here... Must be 6 or 7 years...
Jon

Jon
Jon
Member for 5 years, 5 months
yeah i looked at your space profile
You beat me by two months
Jon
Jon
you are like on all SE sites.. do you do anything else with your spare time other than SE?
12:44
Make games?
Honestly, there's only a few sites that I regularly check. I've been more active on others in the past.
@Jon aphex twin did one of these
Jon
Jon
cool
That thing is fucking terrifying
Jon
Jon
its a human face, how is it terrifying?
it's pretty ugly
12:48
Uncanny valley
you're just desensitized by all that weird shit you're into
This is the third time today my server provider has forwarded me onto a different IT guy whose first action is to wipe my server's kernel and install a recovery image thus rolling back the last two hours of progress with the last IT guy
Jon
Jon
@MattJensJensen is this with a web service provider?
@Jon I'll just say it, it's Digital Ocean.
Jon
Jon
12:50
ah
I use AWS and Digital Ocean primarily.
They're both monsters
Jon
Jon
dreamhost here
At least AWS gave us $10,000 in credits once
Jon
Jon
??
you guys have how many servers?
Previously about 100 m4.4xlarge instances
Jon
Jon
12:53
interesting. I used to maintain a 300 server farm
It's a stressful job man
Jon
Jon
yes it is.
When everything is going well, no one knows what you do, if something goes slightly wrong, people question the value of your job
Wish you all the best.
You too mate
It'd be cool if someone offered cheap (~$20) bare metal units
Jon
Jon
12:56
stuff goes wrong all the time
In the growing pains of working at a startup I literally didn't sleep for five days straight because we were going down every evening due to massive expansion
