Jon
Jon
00:29
Whoa
Is that a shoe thread?
00:44
Krita is awesome
@NaCl Photoshop is awesome :P
Photoshop is not free as in freedom
ik but it's pretty worth it when it comes with the CC bundle :D
if you're a student, you get ALL the adobe software for 30$ a month :)
tho Krita is much better than Gimp shudders
free as in freedom, not free as in free beer
I don't mind paying for software
oh derp lol in that case I gotta look at Krita
00:53
If you got Photoshop, it'll probably be much better
Photoshop is superior, no doubt here
01:06
But its way easier to do something with than with gimp
I really dislike gimp's interface
Sie
Sie
This SphereCast is behaving very weirdly. It only seems to work when I'm at a certain distance but from it but not within it.
photoshop's interface pissed me off while gimp's just made sense right away... but gimp doesn't have many features. if you want to do anything fancy like digital painting, gimp just can't do it.
Sie
Sie
Anyone have any ideas?
@IcyDefiance I'm the opposite. I guess it depends which you learned first. I started off with Photoshop and then Gimp. Gimp's seemed backwards to me.
I know it's not quite as feature rich but I actually really like Paint.NET nowadays and so far it fits my [basic] needs.
I would agree, but I didn't really "learn" gimp. I just looked at the tools that were there and started using them. to even see all the tools in photoshop you first have to learn that the toolbar buttons are actually menus, not just buttons. and that isn't obvious. I had to use google just to find the damn fill tool.
the entire photoshop experience is like that. no part of the interface works how you would expect. once you know it then sure, it's usable, but you'll be using google a lot or taking a college course on it before you can use it effectively.
Jon
Jon
as someone who started with photoshop... gimp sucks
Sie
Sie
01:15
Ya. I like GIMP and now that I'm getting into game development (and before then) I've stopped pirating tools. So I've been trying to get better acquainted to free tools.
GIMP ARGH
gimp is very powerful if you know the drill
especially with it's scripting-thing
gimp has a horrible interface
yeah
lol well all I can say is I didn't have to use google to find gimp's fill tool :P
Sie
Sie
01:22
I didn't have to use Google to find MS Paint's fill tool either.
Doesn't make both interfaces less horrible
Sie
Sie
Here is an old abandoned (and what I assume was burnt down at some point) house that I snapped some pictures of. Pretty cool but the photos are a bit muddy since my camera is shite.
Ok very muddy. It almost looks like these are water paintings... :/

1 hour later…
02:25
Inkscape to the rescue!
Sie
Sie
Meh.
Anyone know how to draw a spherecast in the editor? Trying to debug this damned thing.
Never mind found it.
I'm curious how that looks like
Mind uploading a gif?
Sie
Sie
Ya just a minute.
@NaCl As it turns out not terribly interesting but here you go: gfycat.com/FamiliarDearIndianelephant. Note the rigid body constraints.
Nice, thank you!
Sie
Sie
02:47
No problem.
Sie
Sie
03:14
Ugh... Well as much as I want to keep on working on levels. I suppose I should start making a main menu, pause menu, and make sure compatibility between VR and traditional setups is still at peace. Bleh I hate this part. Oh well.

5 hours later…
08:01
morning :)
good morning everyone
jó reggelt!
08:17
glad that OnApplicationQuit seems to get called before OnDestroy
09:12
@jon why does steam say that picross was accepted by the community and I cannot find it on the store?
09:32
multithreading with minimal performance loss in the main loop is hard
@Leggy7 because there's things in between greenlight finishing and getting in the store
Probably lots of paperwork for one thing
And greenlight is also for uncompleted projects
09:53
@Leggy7 also just becuase something it greenlit doesn't mean it get's into the store. greenlit merely means if the developer wants, he has access to store
your game might be greenlit but you consider it unfinished, and don't put it
oh so maybe it it has been greenlit recently?
well according to starboard, it was greenlit about last week
Which is not a long time
If I'm not wrong it took @ChrisMcFarland 4-5 months before he added steam api to tallowmere and published the game.
again if I'm not wrong you don't have access to steam api before you get greenlit
I think there's a steam API you can download but I don't know how far that'll get you with out a developer key
DH.
DH.
10:41
There's a lot of Steam API implementations, but you need the product key anyway, so you need to either get greenlit or be an already known studio :P
Hey guys ! What do you think about my game ? I would be very happy for a little feedback ^^ youtu.be/71GGLWBSTPw
11:02
hey, looks like you got some basis to build a nice dungeon crawler @genaray
Thanks man ^^ Do have some ideas what i need to change/ improve ? :)
are you using a game engine to develop this game?
@genaray your health-bar is clipped by the walls, the bars of enemies are not
No, its totally made in java using libgdx. You also can play it in lan with some friends :) Maybe im putting the source code later on github. Thanks tkausl :D Didnt noticed that ^^ Will fix that soon :)
well, think of the basis of a dungeon crawler. what does make a dungeon crawler good to play?
different enemy types, items, inventory, rewards
you are just spoiled for choice :)
and obviously an appealing graphic art, whether it is pixelated or not
11:14
You are right, i really need to add some more enemys and items. Inventory will come later ^^ Thought also about steam works achivements and stuff like that. The problem is i havent got an art artist >.< until now i made everything myself :) Thats also my first game i develop :) Thanks for your help :D
that's fine
important is to endure while you have to show your non-artistic graphic :) I know something about that
luckily I now have my wife doing the dirty job :)
5
DH.
DH.
That sounded so wrong lol
rofl
LOL
whats the dirty job?
graphics, obv :)
11:36
yeah. obv.
hey girlfriend? Wanna do some dirty things?
Wait, I'll open photoshop for you
Jon
Jon
11:49
ask her if she wants to do the dirty job for me too
hate doing it myself
How do people make videos of themselves talking to a camera, and upload it without any shame?
Copious amounts of alcohol?
I'm not even sure how people upload their voice without any shame
Jon
Jon
no, people do it non stop every day sober
Like this for example... she is having a great time talking to herself.
that's a weird world, @jon
but not too much if you think that the nowadays keyword is shop (when it isn't masked as share). everything is a commodity exchange, you too
Sie
Sie
12:55
C++ feels so much clunkier compared to C#.
Not surprising since it is :P
Sie
Sie
Why do people still use it so often? Everything just feels so backwards but then again I learned C# first. I mean I've heard it is somewhat more robust and gives more control at times.
You have a much finer grain of control with C++.
For 99% of projects, it doesn't really matter though.
It's usually just a matter of preference.
And of course, C++ compiles to many platforms, where C# is more limited.
C++ is also possibly more light weight than C#.
Sie
Sie
I may be wrong but isn't Unity's core C++ but it just has a C#/Javascript top layer?
No clue. Unity is a mess, that's about all I know. :P
Sie
Sie
12:59
It's not that bad but like any engine it has it's quirks to work around.
No really, it's a mess. :P
Jon
Jon
its not a mess you dolt
It's not? :D
Carefully structured chaos then?
Jon
Jon
being closed source, it is not really possible to tell
It's not possible to tell that Unity is a mess without the source?
How about the messed up naming conventions and the lack of any decent documentation?
Sie
Sie
13:02
I don't feel as though it's a mess. The documentation is there but ya some of the docs really could use some love.
Jon
Jon
the documentation is left to the community to figure out collectively
lol
Jon
Jon
13:24
Man, so I missed literally every single secret in doom up to now
i kinda wanna restart the whole game now
DH.
DH.
lol
float float_normalized_from_u32( u32 value )
{
u32 exponent = 127;
u32 mantissa = value >> 9;
u32 result = ( exponent << 23 ) | mantissa;
float fresult = *(float*)( &result );
return fresult - 1.0f;
}
What kind of black magic is this
does this solve the problems which modulo has?
for random numbers
@tkausl just what is u32?
13:35
32 bit unsigned int
actually it's pretty much simple code...
uint32/uint32_t
if you know how floats work
i kinda know the basics
tkausl when you post code hit the "fixed font" button
will keep your formatting
13:38
well... there is one thing that I don't understand, and that's why exponent is 127 and not 23
ok... it's not converting directly to float... but normalizing it on the way... what does normalize mean in the context?
was that little fuck supposed to look like yoda?
Sie
Sie
@Almo Not sure. My friend linked it to be a while back and I thought it was funny. I use it on the rare occasion.
He's Dungeon Master from the mid 80s D&D cartoon.
"You will know him by his white hair"
later, they talkin to the bad guy with black hair thinkin "this guy is safe" but he had a white rabbit. They almost got their asses kicked by the guy with a "white hare".
uh yeah
normalized means between 0.0 and 1.0
this function takes a 32bit unsigned int and converts it to a float where 0 is 0.0 and MAX_UINT is 1.0
13:50
@tkausl ok then... I guess the exponent =127 means actually the number is (1 + mantissa) * 2^0
the u32 should lose 9 bits, because float has only 23 positions for mantissa
and finally it's reducing 1 because the number built in the first 3 lines, is actually somewhere between 1-2
remember float is represented as : (1 + mantissa) * 2^(exponent)
well
the only part that actually puzzled me was exponent = 127. I guess it was because I assumed exponent should be written is two's-complement value, which is not the case
(1 + 8,388,607) * (2 ^ 0)
doesn't make sense to me
exponent is written in a way that exp = 0 is basically 2^-127 and exp = 255 means 2 ^ 127
@tkausl it's not like that...
remember the u32 value already has some bits
either being 0 or 1?
yes
but the highest uint should become 1.0f
13:57
the float representation that the guy basically equals to (1 + (u32 / 512))
so if i take 4,294,967,295
don't ask me why... that's how the float works
and right shift it by 9 bits
i get 8,388,607
@tkausl the highest value is not 1... it's missing exactly 2^-23 from 1
Sie
Sie
fml
Yesterday a transformer blew and it fucked our AC up. 85 degrees & 71% humidity and no repairs till Monday as the guy needs a part.
14:01
Questions like these piss me off
You can ask questions like this one. However we expect you to do your homework. You want details from us? Cool, we can give you details! Giving good details is hard work. We expect you to do hard work first. What do you understand of these concepts and why do they confuse you? What did Google tell you that you don't understand? If it's about the usage of the concepts in a library, give links to the specific documentation of the library. — Alexandre Vaillancourt 1 min ago

Q: What is the difference between the "Terminalvelocity" and "Acceleration"

Gokul SreenivasanI'm developing a game in libgdx. But I'm confused with the difference between the TerminalVelocity and the Acceleration. Can anyone explain it?

Sie
Sie
What do you guys usually use to get [free] play testers to help out? I know of WIP Wednesday over on /r/GameDev and /r/playmygame.
I tell people here about the game and they usually want to play it
Sie
Sie
@AlexandreVaillancourt Ya looks like a home work question and smells like one too.
that's good for about 5-8 people trying your game
Sie
Sie
Ya. I need to learn how to build in HTML5 and host that.
14:04
you can also send people an APK
or get them on TestFlight
@AlexandreVaillancourt best punishment is to totally ignore. So if they have a problem and put no effert in research, they keep the problem up for the time the get no response
Sie
Sie
At one point some crappy little flash site stole my "game". The "game" they stole was basically a tiny clone of "The Ball" but with some extra features.
@Leggy7 Yeah; unfortunately, some users will answer. Easy rep!
@Sie yeah bastards
Sie
Sie
14:06
IIRC doesn't the rep go away if the question gets deleted?
I have a sitelock on the Cognizer web game, though I'm sure there's a way to get around it
@Sie Yes, but in this case the question will not be deleted. It has answers, it will just get closed.
if it gets closed.
Sie
Sie
Ironically they actually offered to pay me a bit of money (or they implied). They steal my little game and then want to pay me? I basically told them to fuck off.
And I don't think there will be a motive to close it.
Sie
Sie
I put in a close vote myself. It has no business here.
@Almo How does that work? I mean I'd like to at least make their lives a bit harder.
14:08
hang on
I'm guessing they can dig into the code and change the site it looks for, but it's not just a simple copy job anymore
Also, Cognizer has a "Get The App" button on the front page, which links to iOS/Android.
so... even if someone steals it, they have to hack that part out of the game for it not to serve its intended purpose
since my money comes from the app, people stealing the web version isn't so big a deal
@Sie All right, if you feel it should be closed, that's all right :) Community power!
Sie
Sie
@Almo I've thought about obfuscation but it doesn't really feel like it'd be worth the effort.
it's not
someone who wants to steal your game will
if your audience is large enough, some people will pay, and that's how you survive
Sie
Sie
Ya.
security through obscurity is never worth it
14:15
Cognizer's price is high because later games I make and put less effort into will be priced lower.
over time, a pricing scheme will become clear to people who follow my games
like when I make Clixxor again, it will be $1
or maybe even free/ad supported
how much is cognizer?
A tip to help avoid a game from being stolen is to make it client-server
please no
Sie
Sie
@AlexandreVaillancourt Like stream the game kind of?
Ya that sounds like a bad idea kind of. Reminds me of EA.
With their online verification crap with the (newer) Sim City games.
More like you have the game logic run on the server, with the client only displaying it.
14:18
@Leggy7 $3 US
And they still cracked it
Jon
Jon
I glitched doom
Sie
Sie
@Almo Easy there Mr. Warbucks McFatCat.
:D
Jon
Jon
I got stuck inside a wind turbine thing, then I was in between the walls
14:19
Well yeah, but then you make efforts to change/update the content often to encourage users to play to your version instead of theirs.
Sie
Sie
What's that from? Looks like Crysis based on the HUD @Jon.
Jon
Jon
Doom
Sie
Sie
@AlexandreVaillancourt My biggest fear is people won't like the concept like I do. I guess play testing will help me get a better idea of that.
I mean clearly I enjoy it or why else would I be making it?
I couldn't develop something I don't enjoy
14:22
@sie your audience is particular, I guess
thats why I don't want to work for the game industry
Sie
Sie
@Leggy7 I guess puzzle gamers would be attracted to it or at least that's the goal. Basically if you enjoyed games like Portal, The Talos Princaple or maybe The Ball you'd probably like playing The Vertex Whisperer.
@Sie Well if you want to make money from a game, you have to know in advance who's your target audience and how much are they ready to pay for it. If your game is very niche, you should consider it's a pet project and don't expect to make money out of it.
IMHO.
Sie
Sie
@AlexandreVaillancourt Well as I've said before and since day one I'm aiming for the puzzle market. I'm not aiming to make it rich or anything like that but I certainly hope people will like the game and enjoy it. Given the success of games like Portal 1/2, The Ball, The Talos Princaple, The Witness and countless other games I'd say the market is definitely there and I've done some minor sales projections.
I'm mainly focusing on making the best game possible right now though.
Oh, ok, well I'd prototype and have it play-tested :)

I hate Florida so much. It's so hot.
Why do people keep moving down to this soup aired crap hole?
What about those moving UP from say, Haiti, Cuba, Mexico and the like?
Sie
Sie
Depending on the area I suppose it could be a relative improvement.
DH.
DH.
And how much is hot to you?
Sie
Sie
It's not so much the heat. It's the humidity that kills you down here.
The air feels like damned soup.
14:43
Here, some retired people go to Florida during the winter but the come back here for the spring and summer...
DH.
DH.
It's the same thing in Brazil
Sie
Sie
If it were 85 degrees but 0-10% humidity I'd be happy.

The temperature can go up to 40ºC during the summer, but the "sensation"(IDK the correct term) can get more than 50ºC

Sie

Sheesh. StackOverflow is quite the shit show at the moment.
Am I going to be banned for saying a bad word? @Almo
why is his name italic?
Sie
Sie
Because he is a room owner. He can kick, or temp ban people if I recall correctly.
14:59
@tkausl I think it's because he's a chat mod
@Sie what is your game? have you revealed any content atm?
oh okay
Sie
Sie
@Leggy7 The Vertex Whisperer. It's a game where you manipulate an objects vertices in order to deform it to make different objects and to help you solve puzzles. I started development in Febuary and am happy with my progress thus far. Here is my blog where I typically post bi-weekly to once a month.
I will be posting a small demo for play testing here soonâ„¢ and on Reddit as well.
You just destroyed your trademark claim on the word "soon"
> I will be posting a small demo for play testing here in a soonâ„¢ small time interval, and on Reddit as well.
fix'd
C# room back
god save the queen

What does the queen do for society? God save the scientists.
@Almo Hehe not today, I'm at home today :) Next week?
haha sure man :)
@Sie uh fuck no
:)
@TheMuffinCoder do ittttt
@TheMuffinCoder w00t man! The muffin is back!!
Wow I think SE is down
15:18
yeah, GDSE site seems down
@Sie with "the talos prinacple" you mean "the talos principle"? I noticed you wrote everytime prinacple :) also in your blog
@AlexandreVaillancourt Seems to be the whole SE, crypto is also down
Yeah
I nearly don't need SE to live. I kind of got addicted...
Sie
Sie
@Leggy7 Whoops. Will fix that in a bit.
@Sie by the way it looks interesting. Wanna see some gamplay of puzzle solution via vertex mod
DH.
DH.
15:24
SE seems to be back, at least for me
It's not really back, it's an illusion
Because you know, you can always rely on SE for pulling a fucking rabbit out of the hat when you have some computer problem
everything is an illusion if you want to get technical
Except for the literal "everything", as in the concept not the reality, to be extremely technical
Sie
Sie
If you haven't seen that series you should. Very trippy and not what it appears to be at all.
15:26
Or is it?
user92578
Is an illusion still deceptive enough to be an illusion if precisely the illusory aspect is the expectation?
user92578
also, sup?
ayyyyyy
@Tyyppi_77 I lost the code for GunHero :'(
user92578
weird that you've had some

Just went to wikipedia and this guy is longer than 1 meter
Like if it got on you, you would be sitting there tossing it away over and over like a spool of rope lol
DH.
DH.
How can this thing dig so deep to fit into?
Someone make them evil in a horror theme where they swim up and tie around your arms and legs and drown you
Also make them smart so that when it seems like the protagonist beat it by knowing how to float, it hoops a passing dolphin and it drags him under
Then it leaves you with room for a bad sequel next year where the person wakes up in underwater dolphin atlantis meets saw
DH.
DH.
I would totally see a movie with giant antlions making giant holes eating humans
Well obviously because you would play the game..
