02:42
@MickLH I was playing Kerbal Space Program. It's down to 62 C now.
It's a laptop.
When it gets hot, I put a spatula under it to prop it up.
KSP is the game that I was playing that broke my video card.
Cools it down and increases the clock speed.
And it's not really that intense on the video card either...
lolwut
Broke?
@AidanMueller lap-top water boiler?
02:45
Sure.
The boiler powers my CPU.
The CPU heats the boiler.
I knew intel were the kind of bastards the would deny perpetual energy devices while manufacturing them
either gcc really hates template classes inheriting each other, or vc++ is incredibly forgiving. haven't figured out which yet, but either way it's starting to piss me off.
@Jon The gomer just keeps swinging on level 18
@IcyDefiance lol gaem?
maybe I do need a break...
okay just give me a minute
03:00
Level 23 is trolling me. Says I clicked I got 4, but I KNOW that I only clicked 3 times.
gettink ze factorio demo
I love android.
I had this same problem, cause Tyyppi has one of these things
glad I was able to find an answer and send him a new build though
hopefully it will work
03:43
@Jon Good game
Pip
Pip
04:36
@AidanMueller @MickLH the water wouldn't boil until far after the CPU melted, right?
Why would the CPU melt? This is silicon not water.
@IcyDefiance i've won 3 of the last 15 games
Pip
Pip
Wrong wording, I was referring to the CPU overheating failsafes. :P
I think the ~100 degrees wouldn't be enough to boil water
oh wait a sec, I forgot to convert the units
Well, it seems like you could do it if the failsafes were above 100 degrees C
05:17
Can some one explain what i did wrong here for my code:
temp = transform.position.x;
temp -= myValue;
transform.position.x = temp;

This causes the error:
Cannot modify a value type return value of `UnityEngine.Transform.position'. Consider storing the value in a temporary variable

It doesn't make sense, pretty sure i am using a temporary variable here..
@WDUK It looks like the compiler wants you to use a temporary for the whole Vector3 position, not just the .x float
05:51
@WDUK Mick is right. The reason is that position is a property, not a variable. Properties are just syntax sugar for functions, and in this case, it's returning a struct, which means it returns a copy of the original.
In other words, "transform.position.x = temp;" is just setting x on a copy of position, and the C# compiler is nice enough to prohibit that, since it's not doing what you would expect.
@Pip My CPU was running at 103 C.
ah i see thanks for explaining. looks like i was assuming it would be similar to JavaScript's behavior, guess not!
So yes, it could boil.

it's looking really cool Tyyppi
DH.
DH.
it's weird and awesome at the same time
Jon
Jon
this interview is going to encourage another wave of idiots making games
DH.
DH.
it says those fables, like "anyone can make games" and "making games is easy"?
Jon
Jon
11:17
No.. dude took 4 years, made game by himself -- never made a game bevore
Sells 500K copies
used to be a usher at a theatre -- now is millionaire

DH.
DH.
well
at least he said that it costed him 4 years to develop the full game
Jon
Jon
he really did create a pretty cool looking game
DH.
DH.
I didn't check the game yet
Jon
Jon
it doesn't look like a game someone made alone
DH.
DH.
now that I got all set up for my thesis, made the SBS code work for Unity that I need, I think I'll keep drawing some sprites for my game
I need to reduce my distractions lol

i need to buckle down and finish this damn game
Jon
Jon

waiting for my ex to drop off my son
@Jon your ex? you got divorce... sorry I'm asking though
Jon
Jon
Yeah man... my issue right now is I need to take a dump
But if I do, she's gonna get here, and I won't be able to open the door
getting married nowadays, is really silly
In my opinion -- it costs an arm and a leg and for what? so that lawyers can verify that you are together?
Sometimes it is better to not be traditional
DH.
DH.
is getting married that expensive?
Jon
Jon
cost me less than 1000
divorce costs a lot more
Thing is people will mock you if you have a cheap wedding
Your supposed to have this magical day
We got married in our house -- had a huge party in the backyard -- BBQ, tables, music, kegs
Not a typical wedding to say the least.
But I had always been vocal I didn't even want to marry -- did it to make her happy
DH.
DH.
12:14
yeah, even because a lot of girls have that dream in a church
Jon
Jon
Yup... church, and uber expensive wedding dress -- and expensive venue with food
And a ring is supposed to be 3 months salary
DH.
DH.
and if you don't have a house big enough, you will need to rent a place for the party
Jon
Jon
A girl told me this the first time I heard it -- that a diamond engagement ring should be about 3 months salary .. I laughed and she scoffed at me
If a girl expects me to drop 10-12K on a ring -- she can just go find someone else.
DH.
DH.
a lot of girls put their dreams on the material things of a single day
to me I would prefer a lot to not make a party and trip to somewhere that both want
still expensive, but way better

@jon was playin some more gorb last night. good shit dude.
feels very light
you know how ubi games like AC feel heavy? yours does not have that feel
Jon
Jon
assassin's creed?
i don't know how to take that lol
compliment
AC has great art, weak gameplay
ubi tends to make heavy control systems because they are animaton-driven
Jon
Jon
Yeah, but totally different gamer market, and everything else for that matter, haha
but physics games like yours can feel heavy, too if they're not done right
but you did not make that mistake
all i was saying :)
Jon
Jon
thanks man
13:40
like, you could make it "on click release" and suddenly it would feel shitty
Jon
Jon
i am going to need to make more levels.. I think I am going to add glue and moving platforms (coloured platforms that can be clicked)
hey sounds like a good idea to me
user92578
I didn't actually finish your game, so I'm not sure if you have this already
user92578
But a fan with a wind force could be cool
Jon
Jon
i'm not so sure about that
if anything it will be a trampoline
13:42
is level 29 supposed to be doable in 2 clicks?
says par 4
Jon
Jon
it was.. they are red now
ah ok
Jon
Jon
i had a few levels like that
i tried a couple times and said "wait... duh"
:)
Jon
Jon
i switched the solid color from orange to red

Probably a good idea

Thanks guys!
user92578
It's a lot better than the old listbox
Jon
Jon
14:18
yeah looks awesome
I'm wondering if I should show a level preview for my game
i already have the screenshot and viewer written.
user92578
that could be pretty cool
Jon
Jon
I'd have like 6 per page.
I think it would look better than what I have now
Agree.
It would make finding a level easier for sure...
Jon
Jon
I also think you will need to beat a level before I unlock them all... I"m thinking you need to beat 5 out of 6 to unlock the next 6.. I dunno yet
I think I would require beating, but not at par, a level to advance to the next.
It's a very common schema, and would work well for your game.
DH.
DH.
14:22
that would make sense only if the levels were organized by difficulty
Jon
Jon
my only concern is what if you can't beat a level.. you can't keep playing
I think of your game a similar in difficulty and scope to something like Cut the Rope. You can't skip a level in that game.
They do offer hints, extra tricks, etc, for those cases you are really stuck.
Which you can purchase more of via IAP.
Jon
Jon
might as well write a test menu system.
add shuffling so I can re-organize them easier
14:40
@Jon I think so
allows you to find certain levels later

Q: Images won't appear in my web

MackieWe have a project in our computer class and when I was adding some images, it would not appear when I checked it. Even my background image, it won't appear too. I put my images in the same folder as my website and still...I'm wondering why...

user92578
Something might be wrong with his web
hahah
user92578
what just happened there
user92578

I rolled it back.

the menu disease is spreading!
16:17
@Noctrine that game is awesome... saw some gameplay videos on youtube
Jon
Jon
i don't like having the text there...
The convention would be to somehow include it in the box.
user92578
Yeah that could work
Include everything in the box, in fact.
Top right corner has some space for the level number.
16:22
You could strategically make the background larger to make sure you have empty space.

Q: Add "magic link" for XY Problems

Jim GarrisonComments allow shortcut magic links such as [help] - Link to Help Center [ask] - Link to How to Ask and a dozen or so additional ones. I'd like to see a new one: [xyprob] - Link to http://xyproblem.info

woa
[help] in a comment links to the help page of the site you're on!
no more grabbing the URL and pasting it
user92578
looks good to me
the off-center stars bug me
but it doesn't look "bad"
just seems odd for some reason
user4704
what if they were down the side, vertically?

those look nice
I like that better
Jon
Jon
cool
BUT IT'S YOUR GAME :)
Jon
Jon
i'm not a fan of having the par and best looking like buttons
which one is better?
i think #1 is the cleanest i guess
user92578
yeah #1 ftw
DH.
DH.
17:12
I vote for #1
The text in #1 is too small I think.
DH.
DH.
I don't think these are actually the 100% resolution for the ingame images
Fair enough.
Well, give me a sec...
The actual images are higher resolution. I think the goal is to do it on, what, a 4 inch phone?
Jon
Jon
Yeah,
Given that, I think the text in the two right ones is the right size.
I think the layout on the left is best, but I don't know if I'm a fan of the white box...
What would it look like to have the background extend throughout the box?
Jon
Jon
17:20
crowded
I mean leave the boxes where they are, but extend the background.
Jon
Jon
shitty unlock animation ftw
It looks like the lock resizes on the first jump?
Jon
Jon
17:44
little much with the buttons? lol
There... what do you guys think of this?
DH.
DH.
seens good enough for me
Jon
Jon
i think it looks decent for now
Anyone not get the free games for the "Make War Not Love 3" thing? I have an extra key for one giveaway: reddit.com/r/steam_giveaway/comments/49vrt3/…
18:00
@Byte56 so is it worth the disk space?
DH.
DH.
It has Golden Axe, why not?
@Ali.S Renegade Ops is alright, for free.
I didn't even try the others.
You can always hide them from your library if you don't like them :)
Factorio needs to allow queuing research. I keep coming back to the game paused, waiting for the next research project.
They're planning a proper research tree. Maybe it'll come then.
Likely just select the node you want, and it'll get all the prereqs, just like crafting.
Also, you can turn off the pause thing. So the game just continues without anything researching.
I might look into that.
18:08
It's the same way multiplayer handles researching.
It'll just flash at you instead.
Pretty fun in multiplayer though. But it takes a lot more coordination that any other multiplayer game I've seen.
I'd imagine.
If you're all working on the same factory anyway.
It's nice for some things, like, one person handles walls and turrets, someone else works on power and mining, and another does the actual making of things.
I just tore down most of my production line. Got 50 robots and 4 roboports, but everything was messy. Going to make them move around some of the specialized things. I'm thinking I'll keep iron/steel/copper/plastic on belts.
Robots are sweet. Getting the personal robo port thing is really great paired with blueprints.
You just drop a blueprint and the robots build it.
It's fantastic
Sounds awesome. I'm already using bps a lot. Only have 10 builder bots though.
18:13
And great for tearing things up, 'cause they do all that then store the pieces for later construction
50 logistics, 10 building.
But getting them to clear an area of forest is awesome. :P
That game is sooo smooth too. I had thousands of logistics and 100+ builder robots
They did all the expanding of the 3 new roboports themselves. Told them to clear the areas and build the ports and electric poles.
i got the factorio demo last night
not sure I'd have the patience to play it, but it looks like a nice game
Awesomenauts free weekend
I really enjoy it. But it's a game for nerds. :P
18:16
that game is good fun
Tinkering with production lines, optimizing things. :P
I prefer infinifactory for that
I love games where you start with almost nothing and end up building a massive base
Optimization and logistics
I need my games like Byte56 said, where you start with nothing and get large bases.
Moonbase Commander :)
must be played against people though, the AI is bad
18:17
I enjoyed infinifactory a bit, but the non persistence isn't suited for me.
It's on my list
But I'm not buying an games this year :/
Trying to finish my backlog of games...
And be more productive.
I'm going to be trying out trains in Factorio for the first time soon.
anyone know if sending a tip to kotaku about a game if a free code should be sent?
or does that create a conflict of interest?
Trains are pretty fun
Never had the need before, but this time I didn't have a good source for copper, but decided to go with the map anyways.
18:19
Perfect use for trains
@Almo Sending a tip about a game, like asking for a review?
yeah
most places specify, like touch arcade says "send one code only"
kotaku doesn't specify
just says you can contact them or their writers directly
I really need to upgrade the carrying capacity of my robots. :P 1 item is simply not enough.
I'd send a code, for review purposes. Is asking them to pay you for the game much different?
@WilliamMariager Yes, and improving their speed
not sure really
but thanks for input, i'll probably send one
@Byte56 Yeah, they sure are slow in the beginning :P
18:23
@Almo You're asking them to do some work for you, you can make that work free to them, or you can ask them to pay you to do that work. I think one of those methods will work better than the other.
I was concerned about "we were given this game, so there's a journalistic conflict of interest"
but i think you're right
I naively thought robots easily replaced belts first time :P
They don't have to accept the game, and can still do the review if they're interested enough to buy the game.
But then I noticed 90% were occupied moving iron/copper just to get the basic production going. :P
@Byte56 true
18:25
Ah yeah, I could never get enough bots to replace my belts carrying raw resources and copper wire.
18:35
@Byte56, How do you clear rocks? Explosives?
@WilliamMariager That works, or just shooting them a lot
Ah, I forgot about target shooting :P I just use Space for enemy shooting.
18:50
Anyone have experience using remote desktop to play games?
I was doing it last night, and it was working great, except the mouse doesn't lock to the center of the screen.
Meaning when playing an FPS, I can only look left and right as far as the mouse moves across the screen.
I wonder if that's a game setting or a RPD setting.
@Byte56, Is it possible to filter storage chests? Mark it so it only gets iron.
heh no clue byte
the FPS i play are twitchy enough to where you wouldn't want to play them remote
@WilliamMariager It seems like you can with the circuit network stuff, but I can't think of how right now
@Almo This was surprisingly smooth game play
But I'm probably just not as good as you, so I didn't notice
Jon
Jon
19:04
@Jon Looking good :D
Jon
Jon
think so?
Yeah that looks great
Jon
Jon
gonna probably add a fast tween between page transitions
I'm a fan of fast transitions, slow ones just make me want to not play the game any more
Jon
Jon
19:06
oh.. i'm talking like 0.1 seconds
just to make it look pretty
@Jon Yeah some games I have played had like a 2 second transition, made me mental
First time doing a larger bus line :P Time will tell if it pays off.
I think I might remove stone/bricks. They're not really used much in automated production.
I ran all my resources in a parallel bus like that, then you just belt off to the sides when you want to spin up a new assembly machine.
Only perhaps for walls, but that's easily handled without the bus.
@Byte56 Yeah, that's the idea, just belt off and have the other belts go underground a bit.
19:10
Furnaces too
Exactly
That's a pretty tight operation, you must have removed a lot of stuff
I might add iron gears to the bus.
Yeah, I uprooted almost everything.
Iron gears are good for the bus. You'll need them to make belts and arms, both required for various science packs
Yeah
Also electronic circuits maybe. They seem to be used a lot as well.
Although they're only .5s to produce
So a local production might suffice.
Although that means I'll have an assembling machine making them almost everywhere.
You'll want those on a belt too
It's going to consume a lot of copper wire
You know about the production window? Pressing 'P'
Yeah, I love it :D
19:20
I feel like the developer and I could be really good friends.
Just based on how they designed the game.
user4704
Stalker.
Whatever Josh. You're the one wearing those tan shorts I like.
user4704
Huh, I thought that window-washer fellow looked familiar.
Join us Josh. Play the Factorio. Love the Factorio.
user4704
19:23
What is this game now?
user4704
Hm.
user4704
I dunno, Banished is still in my queue of builders to play
This game is perfect for the mind of a developer/nerd/engineer
I binge on it every 6 months or so. Since it released on Indiegogo a few years ago.
user4704
I'll check it out when i get home
19:26
I wish there was a simple way to avoid the yellow belt in the circle:
It's only there to make sure the items enter the belt on the right side.
I'd just use a splitter off the main iron belt
The move coal to a separate belt?
I usually do that. Then use long handed inserters to pull into the furnaces.
But, with the water right there, there's not really a point.
Just use a splitter off of both the coal and iron, and T them into the shared belt
Jon
Jon
19:36
Hmm, the review limit per queue per day is 20, right?
@Jon It's starting to look real polished. :)
Jon
Jon
thanks
19:50
hey! is there any SE site for asking question related to concentration and all that stuf
user4704
Like... the old board game?
Is there a badge for review queue votes?
user4704
yeah
Vox Populi and Suffrage?
user4704
Civic Duty, Copy Editor and Electorate are related (across all reviews)
user4704
19:54
Custodian, Reviewer and Steward are per queue.
So Vox Populi and Suffrage are not related to the review queues, then?
user4704
Well, only in that you can cast votes in some review queues
Ok... Well I've been misunderstanding these badges apparently. I'll stop hogging the review queues -- Sorry community.
