21:00
your system seems so much more forgiving (and possibly better)
It's not especially forgiving, but I have no idea how forgiving your system is.
Well as I said, you fail, that's it. Done.
There is no redoing a year.
Oh so you can actually fail?
Yeah.
I thought you said you graduate regardless of your grades.
21:02
Yes, just with awful grades.
Oh, right.
You can get a U, which is "ungraded", which means you were so bad they couldn't give you anything.
That is more forgiving and less forgiving at the same time - more forgiving in the sense that you'll never be forced to redo a year (and redoing a year sucks), but less forgiving in the sense that you're stuck with your grades forever.
Then there's (highest) A*, A, B, C, D, E, F (lowest except for U)
Some people don't even get a U
(I may have misused the word 'grammar school' - it looks like grammar schools are more like private schools)
We simple rate from 1 to 10
Which seems much more precise
21:05
I almost got a U in something :P
Ouch
I'M A GRAMMAR SCHOOL
I took a mock version of the exam, and got a U, was like wtf so I read the criteria, real exam got an A*....slight difference
I have done that a few times as well
@Lokkij what I really don't like is the tiers we have atm
There used to be Foundation, Intermediate and Higher, but they scrapped Intermediate
If you're in foundation, you can get no higher than a C no matter how good you are
and it's not your choice which you go into usually
21:07
Uhh huh?
If you're in higher you can get anything from A* -> C, but if you go below C some boards give you a U
some just give you a D instead if you're lucky
Oh okay. How is your tier chosen?
School chooses it.
Based on your grades?
Once you're declared "stupid", you're pretty screwed
@Lokkij somewhat
what happens is, people are put in the lower sets (the people who aren't expected to do well) and then aren't taught anything from the higher so they have no chance of achieving it
21:09
That seems really weird. Once you're declared stupid you're no longer allowed to improve?
if you plead with the school they might move you into a higher set
it's down to them though
and usually the classes are full so it's hard to move
That just sounds terrible.
Plus, if there are just lots of smart people in your school, you end up in the lower set because there is no room in the higher sets
generally, if you're going to move, you must do it when the year closes ready for next year
Right
once you've started studying the GCSE (the end qualification), I've never seen someone move
some schools start that at age 11
mine started it at age 15 which is apparently considered strange
then again they are a "special" school ...
they failed so hard the government had to intervene
man the more I talk about it the more fucked up it sounds
21:12
The Dutch system does have a similar problem - sometimes really smart kids haven't been recognized as smart when the time comes to choose your level (age ~12), and they get put in the lowest level. This leads to them being extremely unmotivated and possibly even dropping out of school.
you can drop out?
You can move up, but those kids often don't know they're smart and since they have no motivation they don't improve.
yeah
Education is mandatory until age ~16
ah right
21:14
After that.. I'm not sure. Pretty sure you can drop then
Pip
Pip
@OMGtechy what platform are you working with Monogame on?
There may be some additional restrictions until you're 18
@Pip got distracted ... but it was Fedora and Windows
Pip
Pip
hmm
I got annoyed because I couldn't launch MonoDevelop on Fedora
@Lokkij that sounds very much like what just happened here
Pip
Pip
21:14
WindowsGL or Windows, specifically?
@Pip no idea
Pip
Pip
@OMGtechy you using the Fedora package or the package provided by Mono?
the issues were with MonoDevelop not MonoGame
Pip
Pip
Yeah IK
I'm asking about that
@Pip don't think there is a fedora one, since there's no mono either. I had to add the RPM and get the fedora stuff from the Mono folks
Pip
Pip
21:15
hmmmm I have no idea then
thanks anyway :)
Pip
Pip
Huh. I was just having an issue with Monogame needing SDL.dll. I reinstalled the nuget package and it.... works?
Huh
Now I need to write a level editor, damn
:D
This is quite difficult without using programmatically generated terrain
But wait!
@Pip witchcraft
Pip
Pip
I can just programmatically generate it then output as the json
oh man it works
I will probably need to write a level editor at some point though
Alright. Next objective: Implement different game states so I can have a menu state and a pause state as well as the current playing states
They're all in the MoonPark.FixMe namespace atm XD
Pip
Pip
21:41
@IcyDefiance I just realized that the GameStateManager in your code is created three times XD
Once in the Game ctor, and twice in Start()
... that moment when something just suddenly works and you have no idea why
Pip
Pip
@KevinvanderVelden I had that happen yesterday when refactoring. It's a nice feeling
No, no not at all
I changed nothing of relevance, why are you working? TELL ME WHY CODE D:
Pip
Pip
My tile flickering issue disappeared when I refactored something totally unrelated. Or at least I thought.
@KevinvanderVelden You misunderstood, I think :)
@Pip you said it is a nice feeling, I say it is the opposite of nice =p
Pip
Pip
21:44
Ah, I think it's good. At least the issue is fixed :)
@IcyDefiance oh, I missed one. A fourth time since one is in Initialize()
XD
Jon
Jon
so your Tiles now hold a reference to your renderer?
It appears that +SourceForge took over the control of the 'GIMP for Windows' account and is now distributing an ads-enabled installer of GIMP. They also locked out original owner of the account, Jernej Simončič, who has been building the Windows versions of GIMP for our project for years.
Pip
Pip
ouch
@Jon yep!
Basically, the TileEngine assigns a renderer to the tile, and the tile takes care of updating itself and the renderer with information whenever the render is attached/detached.
SourceForge is not cool
@Pip mm, are you looking at the RadiantVoid code?
doing stuff like that
Pip
Pip
21:58
@IcyDefiance yeah, I adapted a little bit of the code to my game. :)
Jon
Jon
SourceForge used to be cool... now they are attempting to stay relevant
git essentially killed them
@Pip then I take no responsibility. that thing was hacky as hell and I hadn't even started cleaning it up, lol.
Pip
Pip
lol
I'm fine with that
Seems like Hobo is using Unity now anyway
I'm srtarting to miss playing LoL
well I miss playing anything
downloinading q live right now hoping to get some quake in tomorrow
some of the guys here play quake
new league patch happening tomorrow
jinx nerfed, yellow support item buffed, ryze buffed, and a few utility masteries really buffed
the rest is all pretty minor
22:03
I really like HotS
I liked HotS for like 5 matches and then I hit the limits of strategy that game has to offer, lol
It is working! Mostly
point lights over a maze?
Just some more tweaks and then the combining of the light colours with the actual texture data
@IcyDefiance pretty much, I'm implementing deferred rendering
22:05
This is the output of the light step, there's one more step after that one (which is basically "multiply this buffer by this buffer and send it to the screen"
@IcyDefiance I can't see how league offers any more than it?
Hmm I'm gonna need to make some normals for my texture as well
A thing for tomorrow! For now, bed
I never really liked LoL that much though
DotA 2 was more interesting to me
but HotS really entertains me
league is a lot harder to learn, but there's a lot more to learn. it takes like 300 games to hit level 30 in league and even then most people aren't scratching the surface yet.
meh, I just didn't find it fun, the community sucks IMO
HotS may later get that problem, who knows
22:09
Anyone has any brilliant ideas about this piece of code: http://jsfiddle.net/Jonathan_Ironman/ro9y95b5/24/
It seems horribly inefficient and it's ran 60 times/s
And I still need to add a check so I only hit the first target
@OMGtechy league community does suck. actually riot just cracked down hard on that. they introduced a learning AI to autoban people within 15 minutes of a game ending, if they were toxic and got reported.
2 week ban for the first offense. it's a bit crazy.
well at least they're doing something
@IcyDefiance false
Depending on the severity it's possible to get a 3 day ban I believe
One of the people who reported they got no explanation for their pointless ban actually got an explanation from riot
not what the news post said, I don't think...
Riot agreed that it over banned
Said the account did deserve a ban based on its history but only a shorter ban
and they were going to adjust the weighting of the system accordingly
I could be misremembering perhaps but that's what I'm remembering now xD
22:13
"These harmful communications will be punished with two-week or permanent bans within fifteen minutes of game’s end." http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/player-behavior/new-player-reform-system-heads-testing
but if they're tweaking it still, 3 days might be possible now
I don't really care about that anyway
Pip
Pip
Whoa. You can declare a method or property both protected and internal at the same time
amazing
I think it's a bit over-eager to hand out punishments in the first place. It's banning for things that I would think are just friendly banter, not anything toxic.
I'm kind of afraid to talk at all now, whether I'm angry or not
@Pip yeah, think about what that means :)
just finished deponia...
took me long enough, with a few lookups in walkthrough
23 hours of the game (the complete journey)
:O I bought it on sale a couple days ago, haven't installed it yet
for a dollar, artwork looks cool
22:17
@Chris it's a nice game, though sometimes you really need hints since what you do doesn't make sense at all!
@Chris I've bought it during those sales too
mmm
@Jonathan looks like you're on the right track? Get all enemies that are in the bullet line, find the closest one
I dunno how to do it efficiently in a js game though
Pip
Pip
@OMGtechy yeah. I'm using it :D
awesome :D
Pip
Pip
@IcyDefiance Dota has team voice chat
Can say whatever you want. Others can mute you. It works out well
@Chris Yes it works, but I think it might crash a low end machine :P
Pip
Pip
22:25
if you say anything really horrible people will report you, but the community is really lenient with it :D
riot came up with some reason they don't want to implement that
Pip
Pip
lol why
@Jonathan I have some framerate stutter on my MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz
something something more toxicity
Pip
Pip
we have text as well but the voice is both really good and very useful
22:26
curse voice chat used to be popular for league, but only because they provided jungle camp timers, and then riot added that to the client themselves so now no one uses it anymore
dat pingspam though
can't remember if that's included with muting or not
Pip
Pip
@IcyDefiance lol
@Chris Pingspamming is fun on occasion
ping of shame
Pip
Pip
Also for the fuckwits who do stupid things sometimes at my MMR
only sometimes?
22:27
I admit if I made a mistake, it happens
but I do the mute if they keep going on about it lol
lol yesterday I lost a game because the adc face checked a bush after receiving about 18 caution pings and 2 chat messages saying "it's a bait"
Pip
Pip
I hate my ranked MMR at the moment. I'm calibrating and the only game I've lost so far in solo ranked was because of a person who decided that they wanted mid. I was Zeus, and they sat there and stole farm. Meanwhile, we lost bot tower, he stole runes constantly, and then we lost because we were both underfarmed
@IcyDefiance sigh, humans
Pip
Pip
Yeah :/
God this is BS @IcyDefiance forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/…
I'm currently playing 500-toy pickup
my kid has strewn cards all over the floor and various toys
Pip
Pip
22:30
Nice :D
@IcyDefiance also.... lookee what I found from reddit: i.imgur.com/NuXgs05.jpg
Look for the "Voice Chat" part
MLM
MLM
@Jonathan It looks like you are causing a bunch of "forced synchonous layout". I think you could benefit from keeping track of the ship position internally instead of querying the dom over and over. Also batching your DOM calls when turning the ship, making explosions, etc should help
I think most of the problems with the league community are just because it's so popular. Idiots and trolls always go to the most popular games, and once you're pushing 50 games with afks or trolls, sometimes getting streaks of games with afks or trolls, you just start hating everyone.
Once everyone hates everyone, there's no saving it.
lol
MLM
MLM
@Jonathan Use chromes dev tools timeline to really dive into the bottlenecks. The flame chart view is really nice
22:35
dota, if you fail to ready up during the matchmaking thing when a game pops, you get a 3min wait time before you can queue again to try and find another game.

in-game, if you afk for 5 mins, you get punished and have to play low priority-queue games before you can play with regular players again. serious business
even afking during the hero selection, you lose gold if you take too long
@MLM Lemme check
Jon
Jon
great name.
@Chris league has a low priority queue, but not for afks. that's mainly for people who decline the matchmaker too many times.
they'll straight up ban you if you afk too many times, but that takes some effort to trigger
man, dota, 1 time and you get punished, valve don't take no shit
heh
Jon
Jon
remember that game company that threatened to kill a valve employee?
22:40
riot's waaay more concerned about people saying "fuck you" than about people suiciding into the enemy 20 times and trying to lose
@Jon I remember of it but not any names
and I honestly don't understand why
but meh, I still like the game itself
Jon
Jon
exactly :P
and he like left the company supposedly but then rejoined
Jon
Jon
I remember the event, but not the game or the company.
Jon
Jon
Uber declared illegal in quebec
:(
@MLM Nice tip, thanks. I'll read some more about that part of devtools. I'll rewrite this thing to canvas so the DOM querying shouldn't be an issue then.
Jon
Jon
its actuallky UBERX and not UBER
which apparently doesn't require drivers to have a taxi license.
All I care about, is competition, so the prices go down
a taxi ride is ridiculously pricy
yeah but "omg it's different!"
can't handle change
would disrupt existing business models! noooo
22:43
@Jon I just had a brilliant idea for a new company. FLUBER
it's sad
Jon
Jon
the issue at hand, is that the taxi businesses are putting pressure on government
and government is like.. mmmokay
sucks eh
Where drivers dont require a drivers license at all.
in NZ there's been a small stint about Uber, not really though but yeah, same sort of conservative mentality unfortunately
I haven't needed to hire a ride recently but I have Uber on my phone ready to go
Pip
Pip
22:45
@IcyDefiance in Dota you can report for "Intentional Feeding". Heavy punishment IIRC
Jon
Jon
i'm all for ride sharing
you can report for that in league too but it doesn't seem to do anything
instead I get chat restricted for saying "fuck you" to the guy who was feeding
Pip
Pip
Ouch
seriously I got chat restricted for that. it actually happened.
Are we sure the new system only looks at chat logs?
Jon
Jon
22:46
hmmm..
even if a chat is out of context
chat logs plus a "weight" from any past reports that were valid but not quite worth a ban
it doesn't look at gameplay yet
It's in the works apparently from your link
yeah once that's done it might be nice
who wants to buy me a mousepad! :D
they're like $8 lol
buy your own
Jon
Jon
22:48
i made one out of paper
works great
lol I made a paper one too
but I destroy them while playing CS
Jon
Jon
get better paper
lol
:P
who wants to buy me better paper! :D
Pip
Pip
I have like four sitting in my desk drawer
Jon
Jon
paint canvas could work
Pip
Pip
22:49
how do you not have one?
Jon
Jon
mail me one pip
Pip
Pip
Lol
Newegg gave me a bundle deal for a SteelSeries pad when I bought my mouse
it's like 2x the size of "normal" mouse pads, but otherwise it's the same as any other
Pip
Pip
I have a NOVA one, a plain blue one, and a Zoombak one.
Jon
Jon
remember ball mice?
22:50
@Pip how much do they weigh?
Pip
Pip
not much at all. Like a few oz.
envelope?
lol
Pip
Pip
Could probably do that
Jon
Jon
the guy that invented the mouse -- actually got deodorant with the roller balls, and made a prototype with that
something tells me not to post my address, but to email it to you instead :P
Pip
Pip
22:50
But.... so much effort. I would have to walk to the post office and mail it :/
pffft pip...
that's what the flag on your mailbox is for
Jon
Jon
put the flag up
Load buffer, set flag.
Pip
Pip
But parents be like "What you doing, sending a mouse pad to some random guy from the internets"
XD
Jon
Jon
22:51
lmao
yeah nevermind
Pip
Pip
brb, gotta eat food
Jon
Jon
bbl
@Pip don't you know all internet people are evil and want to kidnap you at some nearby park?
4
even if you're at the post office mailing something to a person in another state, that person in another state will kidnap you at a nearby park, guaranteed
yeah I'm pretty fucked up
if you both use the internet and go outside within the same lifetime, you'll probably be kidnapped
that's just how the world works now
I sound more bitter about that one than I really am, lol. It's really just amusing.
Pip
Pip
23:08
:D
I live about 300 feet from that nearby park. Oh my.
good
Pip
Pip
23:59
Eyy! Stuff is now separated into states!
Doin' the work!
