Sup Fellas
@AttackingHobo I've been looking at that, but it doesn't seem to be close enough.

2 hours later…

Has anybody used Icedove/Thunderbird?
It's actually really nice.

user92578
06:38
Morning
07:03
Hi there! @Tyyppi_77
@Mr.Alien Hi man! Hows things going?
Haven't seen you here before so it would be great to hear from you if you can.
07:28
@7Blue_Beast7 heya, am doing good, what about you? and yes, I have some major rooms in my favorite list so I login automatically when I trigger Rejoin Favorite Rooms
@Mr.Alien Cool... I am doing good myself. So are you interested in Game Dev or you just moderating the Major Rooms?
I was interested when I was a kid :p things didn't turned out well for me so as of now, just keeping a watch...
@Mr.Alien Hm... what stopped you?
no pc, also I was pushed in a commerce field...
:/
I thought you were going to say math.
07:33
haha nah, I was good at math and science..
Most people throw math in as their excuse for not developing a game :/. Problem is that they worry ahead of themselves and that they don't have well planned out ideas.
I still try to think of some unique gameplay and program with js or similar tech
Well no offense then ^
@Mr.Alien So far python is the easiest to develope games with.
Its what most refer to as Open Source or something like that.
Basically gives you the ability to do whatever you like with the language.
I wanted to make games which are like ummm, say pop(classic) or 8 bit retro types, used to learn c when I was a kid but again, no pc = no use
@Mr.Alien meh....
Classice games are sometimes good but most of the classice games get enhanced graphics.
So they hardly ever look pixelated
07:38
nah we can make the 8 bit type graphics, say like minecraft
@Mr.Alien Well MineCraft is pure Java
Some say that was as far as Java could push for a video game :D
I could sometimes tell what code games are made with.
Skyrim uses all kinds of code including their own game engine.
@Mr.Alien I've been working on my space game.
@7Blue_Beast7 skyrim is huge, but I hate those quests games, and aah, I wanted to make space games too ...
Well I have been playing EVE Online to understand how space and stuff works.
@Mr.Alien I So once I get my ode started I wll need to do things like, AU (Astronomical Units), LY (Light Years), Meters (m), Kilometers (km), and Millimeters (mm)
So if I have to do a lot of math. If someone was to fly a battle ship that weighs this much I would need to let the code calculate its mass, weight, and speed and solve for travel time and how long it will take before it takes off into warp.
08:00
@7Blue_Beast7 so its a simple game or you want to be quiet realistic one, kinda real dynamics?
@Mr.Alien I like space and physics and math. I'd expect my game to be realistic. I want any user or player to feel as if they were in space, lost, don't remember how they ended up in space. All they know is they are lost and that the nature of space plays a huge role against the last bit of human kind
I like Planetary Annihilation type games
rts
@Mr.Alien Rts are alright
Now days browser games hasn't been doing very good lately
else fps, but like Halo
I think some are doing good when canvas rolled in
Hey you mind doing something for me?
Well actually how much drive space you have?
O.O I finished working on my space station!
Now a space ship with gunzzz
08:11
I have 3tb in total
@Mr.Alien Wow!
That s so much space.
most of that is filled, wanna buy some more now
@Mr.Alien Okay.... so is it okay if you download Panda3d for me and install it and then basically find the folder with it already installed and compress it. Then can you send it out to me?
^^ I hate when they get filled up to their necks
@7Blue_Beast7 cool, I dont mind, but whats that actually?
@Mr.Alien Its a 3d game engine for python. I need to use it and tried to install it myself but it somehow want let me open it.
08:15
eh, its just 2 mb, so why not download straight away?
user92578
Memory management is not fun at all :(
@Mr.Alien Could you try and compress it for me though?
@Tyyppi_77 I am having hard time building my space craft
user92578
?
I successfully finished my space station
user92578
HEAP[GunHero.exe]: HEAP: Free Heap block 066D3488 modified at 066D34B8 after it was freed
user92578
08:19
Not fun at all
@Mr.Alien ?
@7Blue_Beast7 so download, then compress the installed files right?
@Mr.Alien Yup.
cool, wait
okay... I will go meditate and focus my Jedi powers.
hehe ^.^
user92578
08:23
ProTip: Code destructors as you code your classes, don't leave the destructors for later. It'll be too messy once you start coding those
What the jedi is a code destructor?
@Tyyppi_77 Wow!
I am randomly using a cube and creating a ship out of one cube.
user92578
You're supposed to de-allocate the memory you have allocated in the class in the destructor
Ack. Foreign Mod.
Did something bad happen here?
user92578
You should pee around here so he would know that this is your area
user92578
I think it's all fine, atleast while I've been here
08:31
@7Blue_Beast7 btw, you want sdk for dev files or the end user ones?
also, am on w7
@Mr.Alien I want the SDK files and it has to be at least version 1.8.1 and on the official site.
@Mr.Alien Yeah I use the same Operating System as you (Windows 7)
Lol ^
Yeah, looks good.
Props to @7Blue_Beast7 for helping / interacting w/ newbies.
@Noctrine Nah... nothing happened. Just some mods watching the room.
Supposedly watching the major rooms.
user92578
The game could use some awesome parallax background scrolling
@Mr.Alien You figure it out yet?
Just in case your lost.
when you are done just shoot me a email at [email protected]
Make sure you zip the installed software and then mail me it as an attachment.
@Mr.Alien You finsihed?
user92578
08:56
testing if my script works...
user92578
no it doesnt...
@7Blue_Beast7 download in progress
and dont think that can be mailable
I will either load on dropbox or I'll upload on my server
I can't scroll down to see your message?
Is there a way to clear room messages?
are you on phone?
gosh, I thought torrent would be fast, this is taking forever
Ping me once if you sent me an email
09:10
yup
user92578
test 123
user92578
damn...
user92578
09:28
Working on a script to make the chat use a dark-theme:
user92578
@Tyyppi_77 pretty easy to accomplish
user92578
It is?
user92578
How?
09:30
are you doing with some browser plugin or script straight away?
user92578
I'm using GreaseMonkey to fire up a JS Script when the page loads
@Tyyppi_77 k wait
user92578
Ah, now it runs on an interval
user92578
Colors also new messages
Just give me a min
@Mr.Alien Hold on
09:41
@Tyyppi_77 obviously didn't refactored, can make a function, just copy paste my code in your browser console and hit enter
document.body.style.background = '#313131';
var messages = document.getElementsByClassName("messages");

for (var i = 0; i < messages.length; i++) {
    messages[i].style.background = '#515151';
    messages[i].style.borderColor = '#212121';
}

var username = document.getElementsByClassName("username");
for (var i = 0; i < username.length; i++) {
    username[i].style.color = '#fff';
}

var content = document.getElementsByClassName("content");
for (var i = 0; i < content.length; i++) {
    content[i].style.color = '#fff';
user92578
That's pretty much what my script doe
so whats your issue?
@7Blue_Beast7 was uploading to dropbox, now cancelled. .
Try onedrive
user92578
I don't have an issue?
26 mins ago, by Tyyppi_77
damn...
so I thought an issue :)
user92578
09:45
Ah, that was fixed in the sceenshot I posted :D
aah my bad :)
Refreshing browser page
@Mr.Alien Okay
I am on a computer
I can get to a dropbox but can you post drop box link?
10:02
@7Blue_Beast7 should I upload it again? cuz I canceled cuz u said wait, reuploading again
okay
@Mr.Alien Sorry, heavy browser issues.
done, you will get in 8 mins
Okay
@Mr.Alien Wheres the link?
10:25
@Mr.Alien Thx for your hard long work man.
its fine ;)
10:37
@Mr.Alien Panda is a frame work.
So this means Ima have to really size the frames and stuff with math :D
user92578
I don't understand what you mean by that @7Blue_Beast7?
@7Blue_Beast7 i didn't got you, frames has nothing to do with framework
Oh its python code I am speaking of ^
@Mr.Alien No.... noo.... not what I meant lol
I meant resize the windows and stuff.
user92578
Still doesn't make any sense
user92578
Why do you have to resize windows with math?
10:40
Panda is a rame work
Which means its like dealing with GUI
In python its like 20x20 stuff
Nvm you probably have to do it yourself to understand.
user92578
What 20x20?
user92578
@Mr.Alien You got it? Want to explain?
@Tyyppi_77 may be he meant the resolution of the window in which he wants to load his game
user92578
:O
10:43
@Mr.Alien And the size of my window too.
user92578
Why do you have to calculate it with math?
Because if I don't I want have a window LOL
You probably didn't know that Python requires you to do that.
user92578
What does Python require me to do?
user92578
I'm seriously really confused
user92578
Set the window resolution?
10:45
@Tyyppi_77 Dude you are very confused that I don't get how you want me to explain it to you
user92578
What does Python require you to do?
@Tyyppi_77 Doesn't require me to do anything
user92578
To gain what?
I am saying that GUI's in python have to be defined with window sizes to view the whole program
user92578
And by GUI you mean TkInter?
user92578
10:48
Or PyGame?
@Tyyppi_77 Both
PyGame is a Framework like Tkinter
user92578
You don't use size relative to the window size in TkInter
user92578
In PyGame you do, but PyGame is not a framework like TkInter
user92578
PyGame = Games, TkInter = GUIs
user92578
PyGame does not offer you GUI controlls, and TkInter's pure drawing capability is not that great
user92578
10:55
You don't even specify that much sizes in TkInter
@Tyyppi_77 Mhm... you do.
user92578
You just throw the widgets in and let TkInter position and size them correctly
According to the book you guys viewed so long ago the author explains it.
@Tyyppi_77 Your so used to C#
user92578
I HAVE NEVER PROGRAMMED IN C#
user92578
I just looked through my IDE application that I programmed using Python & TkInter, and not once did I set a widgets size in pixels
user92578
10:58
About 2000 lines of code to achieve basic IDE functionality, and not a single size set
Well why do I have to do it!
user92578
You use pixel sizes and positions in PyGame, not in Tk.
user92578
Now what was your problem about Panda? You have to set the window size there?
@Tyyppi_77 I am not sure lol
I am new to it and am about to get started
I'd like to have a small team to help get started
user92578
You really should've programmed something before starting on a 3D game...
user92578
11:04
So are you going to use Panda or PyOgre?
Panda
@Tyyppi_77 I am not reallly into 2d game programming though.
user92578
I don't think you can be into 2D or 3D game programming
user92578
You can have a preference
user92578
That's absolutely fine
user92578
But it's terribly difficult to jump straight into 3D programming
user92578
11:06
Do you know Vectors? Matrices? Entities? ECS-Architectures? Basic Game Architecture? Update vs Event? Rendering?
user92578
Are you familiar with inheritance? Poly-morphism? Classes?
@Tyyppi_77 I know Update vs Events, Very, very basic game Architecture, Classes, Inherritance, and thats it
user92578
And you think you'll be able to do something in 3D with that knowledge? I highly doubt that
@Tyyppi_77 2d isn't any different
user92578
Oh yeah? Have you tried it and you can speak from exprience? Doesn't seem like it
user92578
11:13
2D is different
Yeah because 2d doesn't use Z
Z axis *
Only X, Y
user92578
And you think that's the biggest difference?
No, theres more
Many more
Think about moving a characters joints?
Think about making a cars wheele rotate faster and faster as its speed increases
Think about how hitting the break with the B button will differ if you were driving slow.
Etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.
Ima go to bed
Night all
@Tyyppi_77 cya
user92578
bye
Jon
Jon
11:48
I use z-axis in 2d
aka, drawlayer
user92578
yeah
user92578
12:00
I'm trying to implement parallax scrolling for background but it's resulting in quite derpy and too fast movement
user92578
Any ideas?
user92578
	renderer->SetDrawBatchOffset(-(GetLevelOffset() / 6));
	renderer->Render(m_ParallaxLayer1);
	renderer->SetDrawBatchOffset(-(GetLevelOffset() / 4));
	renderer->Render(m_ParallaxLayer2);
user92578
This is basicaly my code
Jon
Jon
what do you mean too fast?
most the offset slower, including your delta in there
renderer->SetDrawBatchOffset(-(GetLevelOffset() / 60 * elapsed));
user92578
My level has a bit vertical movement, and I'm having trouble figuring that out...
Jon
Jon
12:06
ah
you need to parallax in both directions?
linearWrap a texture on a quad the size of your viewport
then when you move, set the offset inverse to the direction you are moving, or want the parallax to go
user92578
user92578
Jon
Jon
ohhhhh
Yeah, I am implementing something similar... two things
user92578
I wish I had like a linear wrap
Jon
Jon
Set a horizon line
user92578
12:07
but SDL doesn't have that
Jon
Jon
Then put the texture above the line, and color the bottom
user92578
ah
Jon
Jon
or make sure the underside of the horizon line always has something drawn on top fo it
user92578
Since I don't have wrapping I guess I could just make a huuuuge texture of that one piece repeating and a bottom filled
Jon
Jon
12:23
how do i get my user number?
who the hell am i
user92578
It looks quite good with this level:
user92578
Jon
Jon
yeah.. just something
I think you might want to play with the contrast or something
but aside from that looks awesome
user92578
yeah, the colors are off a lot
user92578
for some reason my simple AI for prisoners always leads them straight to spikes or some other form of death
Jon
Jon
12:30
hahaha
you'll figure that out eventually
I had a grenade that did unexplicable loop de loops
I couldn't explain it. the code didn't read anything close to the behavior
I left it in somewhere at some point, but it got lost in revisions
user92578
I actually don't have any pathfinding, so the walking AI is: if (collision) invertMovement();
Jon
Jon
well lol, doy
user92578
Green really doesn't work either:
user92578
Jon
Jon
hmmmm
is that blue fixed?
or is that going to change?
user92578
12:34
The blue is probaly going to change, I'd like to add storm effects and night/day sets
user92578
It's actually the color I use to clear my window buffer
Jon
Jon
check out those colors for fun
matched from the brown in your scene
user92578
Way too desert-like:
user92578
Jon
Jon
12:37
yah thats bad
user92578
This is great, but only works with the blue sky:
user92578
Jon
Jon
Ohhhh
now we got it
user92578
that's blue * (0, 0, 0, 0.1) & blue * (0, 0, 0, 0.2)
Jon
Jon
that's the formula
user92578
12:39
Now how in the world do I shade textures with SDL
user92578
because these are colored in Gimp, but these would be great if they were dynamic with the sky color
Jon
Jon
use a shader
increment the gradient based on y value
user92578
I don't have those
Jon
Jon
you can't do pixel shaders?
user92578
nope
Jon
Jon
12:40
doh.
user92578
yeah
Jon
Jon
hmmm.. you could cpu it
just pass through the color data of the texture
ohh
or better yet.. have a white/gray gradient on it
and just apply the color you want when you draw it
like, isntead of coloring it in gimp... color it when you draw -- just have the mask done in gimp
going out, later
user92578
later, thanks for the help @Jon!
user92578
13:24
For some reason all I'm getting is some random flickering:
user92578
Jon
Jon
14:22
what the?
Can you set the BlendState of your spritebatch draw calls?
make sure you alpha blend them
hmmm
Apparently SDL sucks for rendering alpha transparency
Suppose to be a lot faster in SDL2.0
user92578
It's not alpha, it has something to do with SDL_SetTextureColorMod
Jon
Jon
you are the SDL guy :)
SDL_SetTextureColorMod seems straightforward
user92578
Basicaly what I did was to make the images white in Gimp
user92578
And then I just set the color mod
user92578
My tweet about this is getting a lot of attention :D
Jon
Jon
14:29
to those ugly colors?
user92578
It works well when I set the shade to like red and grey
user92578
that results are what I expected
user92578
Now SDL_SetTextureColorMod doesn't accept alpha values, so how do I change to formula?
user92578
Multiply the values in the color by like 0.2 and 0.1?
Jon
Jon
strange that you would have to set the alpha seperately.
do you set the color on every frame?
SDL_SetTextureColorMod doesn't update texture texels - it saves multiplier colour and raises SDL_MODTEXTURE_COLOR flag. Subsequent RenderCopy on that texture will multiply texels with fixed colour.
user92578
14:34
What does that mean?
user92578
I use the alpha value separately, but I do not use it that much
user92578
Only when fading is required, SDL handles texture transparency by itself
Jon
Jon
it doesn't modify the original texture
not entirely sure what it means
sounds to me like it does some behind the scenes texture manipulations
doesn't really make sense.
When this texture is rendered, during the copy operation each source color channel is modulated by the appropriate color value according to the following formula:

srcC = srcC * (color / 255)
user92578
Got it!
user92578
It probably had something to do with the Color-class I passed to the render description getting deleted
user92578
14:38
that was caused by the fact that you can't implement multiplication operator between pointers in C++
Jon
Jon
ah
user92578
Now I do the multiplication by hand and return a valid pointer, not a reference from a basic class
Jon
Jon
awesome
good stuff man.. Keep posting updates. fun to watch your game evolve.
user92578
thanks, I sure will!
user92578
Jon
Jon
14:39
yes.. so much yes
user92578
Just to test, it works with any color now
Jon
Jon
love that orange
user92578
Really?
Jon
Jon
well i'm biased.. orange is my fav color
user92578
Doesn't really fit the environment colors that well
Jon
Jon
14:39
i think it provides proper contrast
doesn't distract from forreground
user92578
Well now that I look at it it's not that bad actually
Jon
Jon
looks really good
user92578
:)
