Jon
Jon
21:00
smart man :)
He got two life sentences
so hopefully he enjoyed it while he could
if he was manufacturing lsd, i'm sure he did
I personally, think LSD is very a very important discovery
what it does to the human mind, is just ... undescribable
possibly a view into dementia
a deterioration of reality
I wonder how useful it is to science, or how much they're even allowed to study the stuff...
so not that smart ... you'd think he could afford to break out of prison
I've heard it's extremely difficult to study medical uses of marijuana because of the laws against it
Jon
Jon
the army tested it
i know i've seen some crazy things in my younger days
Jennifer Lawrence Calls Photo Hacking a “Sex Crime”
lawlz
who gives a shit what she calls it
@Jon its not photo hacking if someone guesses your iCrap account password
Jon
Jon
21:12
if I was famous I would definitely not be putting stuff like that on anything related to apple or any other server for that matter
@Jon i love that film :)
Jon
Jon
def one of my faves too haha
hahahahahahaha
The Plague, swipes a diskette from ZeroCool, aka, CrashOverride, containing the code to the virus.
on a skateboard, nontheless
complete crap from a movie buff point of view but awesome for geeks
@Wardy the best part about that whole thing wasn't the whole "don't put private shit on the internet" thing. that's just stupid people being stupid. the best part was the blatant hypocrisy on the part of news organizations calling it horrible and perverted and all that.
Jon
Jon
you know.. that movie created a wave of wannabees
21:16
@Jon So why do you like VS so much?
Jon
Jon
it glamorized the pc nerds that knew how to hack into your email
like huffington post saying the images should all be removed from the internet and everyone who views them should be arrested, when they have a whole page complete dedicated to sideboob shots of celebrities
@Jon lol yeh
or gawker saying the same thing when just a short time earlier it had a sex tape from some male celebrity that they said they wouldn't take down no matter what
Jon
Jon
@AidanMueller it is fast, i've been using it for 173 years
21:17
I am always tempted to type so with to Os in that context.
@IcyDefiance haha yeh
its the celebs fault its on the net in the first place
just because you set a password don't mean its safe
don't get me wrong, hacking is a crime
Jon
Jon
heh. you set the same password across 5 sites.. probably not safe anymore
but once the images are public, trying to stop it will only make them spread more
@Jon It appears as though it doesn't accurately compile numbers.
21:18
i don't even have my address or anything like thato n my facebook account
Jon
Jon
specially if your name is titty mcgee
most people post geolocated status updates
that's just retarded
Jon
Jon
All it takes is a sys admin at a topsite
@Jon What's so bad about Code::Blocks?
Jon
Jon
I never said anything bad about code::blocks
21:19
lol I've seen a few people theorizing that the leak came from the NSA
Jon
Jon
I just said I would never give up visual studio
Pip
Pip
@Noctrine Thanks for the notification!
they were maybe 80% joking, but there's that question, it's totally possible...
Jon
Jon
Someone from a topsite.. probably something like facebook, looked up celebs
then realized that their icloud passwords were the same
then jerked off for a bit
@Jon What exactly are you using that tree thingy for?
Jon
Jon
21:20
then leaked what he got when he was bored
Pip
Pip
@AidanMueller Code::Blocks < VS
Jon
Jon
@AidanMueller in my game
well if i ever lose all my data I know who i'll ask for a backup ...
Is it part of the editor?
Jon
Jon
naw
i just posted the leaf particle picture
21:21
@Pip VS !openSource
Pip
Pip
VS is awesome tho <3
Pip
Pip
awesome
Jon
Jon
what skycolor do you like more?
Pip
Pip
much progress :D
Jon
Jon
21:21
Pip
Pip
Ooh, definitely the second
Jon
Jon
yeah me too
Jon
Jon
makes the trees cleaner
@AidanMueller why is open source so important for people ?
Jon
Jon
21:23
open source means that if something breaks, I can fix it myself.
I run the monogame source code alongside my project
the second seems to have a gradient where it gets a little lighter at the bottom
open source from what i've seen mostly results in crappy unfinished projects with so little funding that they are rarely actually both useful and bug free
I like that gradient a lot more than the lighter overall color
though I'm not sure it would look as nice on the first screenshot
so overall, yeah, second one is nicer
@Jon So did you come up with the tree algorithm?
Pip
Pip
yep
21:23
@Jon why when if its not someone else has to fix it for you
@IcyDefiance The laws aren't the same for the people doing testing on behalf of the government.
Jon
Jon
@AidanMueller it is a paper.. I have the link if you are interested
@Wardy Not always. What about blender?
I would rather report a bug to microsoft than worry about fixing .Net
@AidanMueller I agree there are exceptions to the rule
Jon
Jon
I spent a good two weeks studying and writing the algorithm in C#
21:24
@Jon That's ok. Just curious.
Jon
Jon
I also made a blog post
explains everything there with source code
I thought it was really interesting so I wanted to share
@Wardy What really bugs me is when something is free, but not opensource.
@Jon the US started a new batch of chemical trials of LSD in 2009 - I don't know where they've gone tho
That just doesn't make sense to me.
@AidanMueller why
Pip
Pip
21:25
Whoa this is really nice!
@Wardy Because there is no reason to not make it opensource.
There are all kinds of reasons to not make things open source.
But if it's freeware?
Yes.
Jon
Jon
21:26
I don't want my game open source
@AidanMueller unless you want to give the product away but charge for support
@Wardy projects aren't shitty because they're open source. they're usually just open source because the creator has no desire for profit and therefore can't get the funding to make the project less shitty.
Proprietary code developed by or licensed by a company?
UE4 is open source and has a desire for profit, and therefore it's doubly awesome
@Jon Well for games yes, but for other software.
Jon
Jon
21:27
The tree code I provided is strictly my demo code, and nothing from that point on into the implementation of my engine is included
@IcyDefiance I agree ... but despite my massive over simplification of the issue its the typical in open source software
@IcyDefiance For some definitions of open source.
that said there are some really good examples out there
Jon
Jon
the amount of optimizations I made, makes that demo code crap at this point... I would need to revise the demo
mono is great and blender is a great example of open source that works
Jon
Jon
21:28
I love mono
All i mean by this is that the ideal for open source isn't the norm
Jon
Jon
Xamarin is my future most likely
until then.. monogame :)
@Jon isn't unity based on that ?
@Wardy but it's not a fault of being open source. it's a correlation, not a causation. kind of like black people being disproportionately represented in US prisons.
Jon
Jon
Xamarin are leaders in the mono gaming world
21:29
@IcyDefiance reasonable point I spose
I'm not saying open source is bad ... just that I personally get that bad taste when trying to break in to an open source project
bugs the crap out of me
Jon
Jon
I think unity utilizes xamarin for certain platform builds
this is why when I make my code open source I want it to be a good solid stable state
also I bet closed source projects have a pretty similar ratio of good:shitty projects. they just don't get publicity because "open source more secure omg!" so you never hear about them.
Jon
Jon
a lot of open source projects are shit its all about the support that is put into it
@Wardy I think my top open source software would be:
Blender
Audacity
LMMS
GIMP (actually GIMP kind of sucks. I mean, it's not *terrible*, but I am looking forward to upcoming improvements. More powerful than Paint.NET when you need it though)
21:31
then people can if they want improve on it but I don't expect the community to fix my product because its broken
A lot of projects are shit and it's all about the work put into them
Jon
Jon
monogame has gotten a lot of support over the past few years.. and made it a pretty solid platform to develop on... Xamarin filled in the gaps
Support is a big factor in open source
there has to be a good following
depending on how you define success
if you get into webdev or networking or other server stuff, you'll notice that almost all of the popular tools are open source
almost anything that needs to be really secure is open source
if it's not open source, people don't trust it, which is pretty justifiable
21:35
I'm pretty happy with Audacity
also if it's a hosted service and hosted inside a five eyes country, that's considered a security flaw by a lot of sysadmins
@IcyDefiance generally speaking ... people have had this issue with windows for years
but then look at SSL ... that had a major scare recently and the entire net sits on it
there is something to be said for closed source
that was OpenSSL, an open source implementation of SSL, and the flaw was fixed the instant it was discovered
with a closed source implementation it would have taken months and you'd just have to wait
*cougn*java web applets*cough*
also flash
at least flash fixes things within a week or two instead of months, usually
the Flash updater is also pretty quick
Java updater is a bloody hassle
lol right, java updater makes UAC light up and I always just click no because I don't want to deal with it
21:39
Would you like to install the Ask Toolbar?
Fuck the damned Ask toolbar.
ask still exists?
fuck any downloaded plugin toolbar, for that matter.
I used to see ask toolbar all the time, but now it's the AVG toolbar
that and yahoo
@IcyDefiance If you would update Java you would know the answer to this :P
21:40
hahaha
ok, heading out will talk later :)
Pip
Pip
lol
@SpartanDonut shit, it really has been a long time since I updated java... XD
I think the package manager handles flash updates and stuff in linux Debian.
yep
mint is debian based right?
that's what I had on my laptop until a few days ago
Of all the things that I have loved since I switched, the package manager is one of my favs.
I think so.
It might even be ubuntu based, not sure. But pretty sure it's at least debian based.
21:43
the package manager is great, but only because it allows you to add new locations to download things from.
Pip
Pip
I am pretty sure it has roots in both @AidanMueller
let me find the family tree agian
if ms or apple tried to do the same thing, they wouldn't allow that, and everyone would hate it
I am actually happy with the default repos.
The reason I like it is because of the updates.
So easy to update.
"What's that? Shellshock?"
21:44
wow that is a huge tree
sudo apt-get update
Pip
Pip
Yeah, it is :)
would be better in interactive form
sudo apt-get upgrade
an image is a pain to navigate
21:45
Fixed.
I'm curious if we will see more use of the app store in Windows 10 due to the UI changes
Would be nice to just install Chrome from the app store
things like that
Pip
Pip
@IcyDefiance look how big the debian tree is :P
Also, apparently all things Ubuntu are derived from Debian, Ubuntu is the most major branch of Debian
right, that one I knew
Pip
Pip
mhm
And Mint is a branch of Ubuntu
found it, it's towards the top of the Ubuntu branches
So is chromeOS.
Pip
Pip
21:48
(mint-colored line)
I am a bit surprised by that.
Pip
Pip
I am too, actually
Had to have somewhere to start, I guess
LOL
I am going to make my own distro, and call it oreOS!
about the win10 app store, I don't see it happening unless they also standardize the install and uninstall process for every program, which as a user would be awesome, but as a dev it would be waaay too much work.
"America's favorite OS"
Pip
Pip
21:50
nice
I'll also make a bootloader and call it milk.
And while we're on the subject of sweets, I may as well make it run on the RaspberryPI.
Pip
Pip
Lol
RasPi <3
Has anybody here heard of that new band 1023 megabytes?
No?
Well of course you haven't - they haven't had any gigs yet.
Pip
Pip
wow
just.... wow
unless you use the 1000 MB definition of GB
which is normal enough that GiB was invented to be 1024
user4704
22:04
@SpartanDonut searching the start menu is probably designed to push that
user4704
(when you open the start menu and start typing, you get matches for applications in the app store you can install as well as those already on your machine)
user4704
I find it exceedingly annoying.
I've heard it does that, but haven't seen it yet on my own install. It's strange.
I can see it being nice or really irritating, depending on how it's implemented
I bet I know @hasherr's favorite food: Salted hashes.
And he eats them on a rainbow table.
Oreo are so good
@JoshPetrie When will everyone unmute me finaly?
Ran into these guys at CES - their demo was pretty cool. They'd hooked like Halo up to some motion controls and a few other games. Don't think I'd pay 299+ for the controller tho :\
user4704
@7Blue_Beast7 Don't reply to messages with-unrelated topics please.
I feel like i don't exist. There are only a few who would actually do so in this room right now and ones name begins with A.
user4704
I can't tell you when people will unmute you. That's up to them.
user4704
22:13
Perhaps never.
@JoshPetrie Since when did I become unrelated topic?
hahaaaha what the?
I'll need some incredible, glowing reports from several other people in this chat room before I remove him from my ignore list
and considering he just got suspended for 8 hours yesterday, and a couple days before that was flagging people just for saying they didn't like him...
doesn't look like that'll happen yet
My favorite star treck character are data.
:P
Maybe it should con sidering I need some heavy attention to get you guys to do so
user4704
@7Blue_Beast7 Your question about being unmuted has nothing to do with this message: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/18044192#18044192
Pip
Pip
22:16
@Noctrine looks good for use with the Rift :)
user4704
If you just want to get my attention, just @-mention my name. Don't reply to an unrelated message. It's annoying.
@JoshPetrie Oh I was just clicking on one of your messages to reply to you about something different?
@JoshPetrie Like this?
Pip
Pip
@IcyDefiance you should look at that :/
@7Blue_Beast7 Yes, that is what he means.
user4704
Yup.
22:21
Okay that's what I'll do then instead of replying to messages with something different.
Pip
Pip
In other news: hopefully finishing my magnetometer compass tonight
@Pip What is suppose to do?
Pip
Pip
I heard a ping but there is no message.... wtf?
@Wardy Now THAT is what I have been waiting for :P
(jk)
user4704
@Pip Do you have Pyscho on ignore?
Pip
Pip
but really good job, man
@JoshPetrie yes, but not the SE way; using Blue's script (slightly modified)
user4704
22:30
@Pip That's probably why then.
Pip
Pip
ah
user4704
He pinged you.
@pip you should have said
I had that running before I started on the DX code
Pip
Pip
I was kidding :P
Honestly you have done a fantastic job so far :)
@Noctrine I am not optimistic about their kickstarter attempt. Very cool project, but it doesn't seem compatible with crowdfunding. It's one of those purchase-a-reward kickstarts whose sole goal is to start a profitable business for the developers. Why should anyone want to invest in their success?
22:32
@Pip thx man ... although I think @Jon is doing much better than me :)
Pip
Pip
You are both doing awesome things :)
brb, dogs
@Seth Neither am I, but more because of the number of units they would have to sell at that price point to reach their target.
Yeah...maybe they'll find seed money
eh, who knows. maybe it'll work out for them
@JoshPetrie He didn't read my message?
user4704
@7Blue_Beast7 No, he is ignoring you I guess.
22:34
@JoshPetrie But it wasn't even a crazy message :(
user4704
shrug
It was an actual question.
user4704
That's not really my problem.
@JoshPetrie Well yeah... but you could have told him what I said?
So. I do all this client work, to fund game development - but then I now have client work filling all of my time instead of games.
@7Blue_Beast7 We aren't gonna play telephone for you.
user4704
22:37
@7Blue_Beast7 I could have, in theory. But I won't. He's ignoring you for a reason.
@JoshPetrie Who said I'd do something stupid again?
user4704
Nobody did.
@Noctrine Is this a particular occurrence or a general problem?
user4704
He doesn't need a reason to ignore you, so it doesn't matter.
user4704
You have to learn to accept the consequences of your actions.
22:39
@SethBattin For the moment, it's a general problem. A bit of it is good, like I don't have a problem with getting art anymore. But now I have a problem with getting my own code done.
I feel like, it's going to end with me hiring a programmer and becoming some sort of executive producer :|
@JoshPetrie Don't they end?
user4704
@7Blue_Beast7 Some do, some don't.
@JoshPetrie So if he is using Blue's script to ignor me... isn't that hacking?
user4704
No.
user4704
Not in the against-the-rules way you are thinking of, at least.
22:41
@Noctrine I read this last night: http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=23830

It made me feel like a real whiner for ever believing i didn't have enough time or money.
Pip
Pip
@JoshPetrie huh?
@JoshPetrie So how does it even work?
@Pip I can only imagine how this looks to you.
user4704
@Pip tldr you are not breaking rules by using a script (client-side JS I assume?) to ignore users
Pip
Pip
ah
user4704
22:42
@7Blue_Beast7 I have no idea, I don't use it or know anything about it.
Pip
Pip
Yeah, it's client-side js
@Noctrine really funny actually :)
Sounds like the script isn't perfect, if it's letting pings through. Why not use the normal block function?
@JoshPetrie Lol...
Pip
Pip
@SethBattin because I occasionally want to watch Psycho's craziness.... occasionally
@SethBattin With limited actual responsibilities I've got an excess of one or the other. The finding of balance is the part that's difficult. Where some clients will hit me with requests that ruin my timeline - but are also really good for having resources available to me.
Pip
Pip
22:47
And I have it not block him on transcripts, the conversations cutting off were really weird
@Pip good reason
@Pip So What is this thing you working on then?
user4704
I've always found ignoring people to be more trouble than it's worth. Via software at least.
^
I feel like the solution, is to charge more.
user4704
I'd always get curious when I couldn't follow the conversation.
user4704
22:48
Plus I think it's irresponsible as a moderator.
Excellent solution, Noctrine. Supply and demand :)
If an individual user is going to derail the room, one or more people having them on ignore doesn't really do anything for it.
Now as a moderator, individual users ignoring users makes my life so much easier.
Twitter sues US government over ban on disclosing the number of NSLs and FISA orders they receive. blog.twitter.com/2014/…
That blog post moved my empathy, I want to buy their game to support them - but it's not something I'm particularly interested in :\
does anyone recall a question about multi-layer input systems? searching has been fruitless so far
user4704
22:50
@IcyDefiance Huh.
@SethBattin What do you mean?
user4704
One of the first good things I've seen Twitter do recently.
@Josh Twitter thinks it's a violation of free speech to not be able to say how many times the government makes them do stuff.
i can only vaguely remember it, but it was about abstracting the various input layers with an interface, and possibly wrapping that interface in another layer
can't say I've heard anything evil about twitter, other than the tracking they do with the stupid tweet buttons
nothing good either, so I just had no opinion about them as a company
22:51
^ Is that really evil though?
I feel like the barrier for evil is a lot lower these days.
user4704
Oh, they got a bunch of bad PR a while back from being developer-unfriendly.
if the standard for evil is the potential to do evil with gathered information, then everyone is evil
user4704
And various other business-y "monetize the user" things.
@Noctrine ehh, I could make an argument for it being evil, but mostly I just don't want to be tracked
user4704
Not terrible in the grand scheme of things, but always very self-serving.
user4704
22:52
This is decidedly not, which is notable.

Q: Input management techniques in large games

handuelIs there a standard technique for managing input in large games. Currently, in my project, all input handling is done in the game loop, like so: while(SDL_PollEvent(&event)){ switch(event.type){ case SDL_QUIT: exit = 1; break; ...

nailed it
i was thinking of sean's answer
Yeah, that's what I figured.
This is ridiculous.
The 0ad package is half a gig.
Hmm. The windows one is too. I don't remember it taking this long.
