09:00
i had made my first game in android canvas
Okk, cool. What was it about ?
it was a card game
Okok..
Released it on the store ?
yes. but its buggy. and laggy
i want to implement this using libgdx
Cool
09:20
Morning
Morning
Morning guys
pheww nobody is here
09:38
Heh hi
I am here, but am just leaving
10:16
yo
@hasherr I've seen the logs and unignored you
just try to be nicer and more down to gd.se's chatroom
there's the douche who just does his job and you laugh at him
and there's the douche who is just depressing even if he's not talking to you
if you want to be one, be like the first
though it's usually a better idea to not be one at all :D
10:32
whatsup
sup endro
you've piqued my interest
what kind of tea is it?
roof
just a regular one
10:35
I think there are several regular teas, depending on where you live
in asia that would be green tea, in uk it would be black I believe
well there is no special name for it
nah
green tea is different
i would go with black
with milk
you can still tell us the name of the plant the tea was made with you know
black and green usually come from the Camellia Sinensis plant
well let me check the plant name from the brand
i usually dont worry much about such stuff
Camellia sinensis
ya same
10:41
what brand is the tea?
tata
oh you live in india
Assam tea comes from your country
(it is also from the Camellia Sinensis plant)
the flavor differs from place to place
they dont usually mention that on the pack
10:43
I normally have my tea with sugar, but sometimes I take my strongest assam & ceylon (comes from sri-lanka, near you) blend
and let it steep for 10+ minutes
and just enjoy the bitter hell that follows
oh so u dont add sugar or milk?
it feels as if I refresh my mouth and can taste everything better after it
@endrohat I do add sugar most of the time, that's what I said
oh ya
also with the strongest u mean?
it's both rich in caffeine and very bitter if left to steep for too long
i add cardamom
10:45
black tea starts becoming bitter after ~2-3 minutes at 90 deg celsius
@radical followed me on github? :D
11:01
also this lol
has anybody played the game "project I.G.I"?
it was my first fps
yes
back when I was 10 or something
it was fun
so many good memories
I don't have any of them though
i hex edited the shit out of it
11:07
I just remember climbing a ladder
and shooting people
it was 10 years ago anyway
11*
(almost)
i play it occasionally now .
its fun
the game looks amazing but they still didn't get the blood to look right
11:54
@AlexM., heh yeah, I did :)
follo'd you back
github is the best social network ever
oh man I spent too much on games... again
hey @radical whats delhi like?
And, I need to speak with @hasherr about something, @grey too
12:13
you need to speak to the youngest users here, both underage
coming from you, that gets me thinking :P
lol noooo radicals the one i need to talk to about that
er... gets you thinking about game dev right!
yeah totally
gamedev
Heh I'm here Mick..
@radical you live in a part of iIndia someone wants me to visit
12:18
Ah.. Just delhi or other places in India too ?
Just delhi
Delhi is a modern city with lot of history. You will probably find it pretty crowded though..
whoa
looks neat
do you have huge malls in delhi?
Very difficult to describe.. Some parts are very old, historical places, very crowded etc. others are newer, well maintained, big malls etc..
so you do have malls
12:23
Yes, lot of malls here. Though they are it doing so well, profit wise
now I want to visit too
Err.. Excuse the typos, typing on ipad
You want to visit all the malls in foreign countries?
welcome to finland then, we have the crappiest malls
12:25
especially if they have big IT shops
and awesome restaurants
Oh, the malls don't have it shops. We have 'software parks' for that
Huge places with lot of companies ..
that's even better
Bangalore is better for IT though.. You can find top companies there.. Not the gaming ones though
I was working in Bangalore for few years
Mick, you can find far better info on the net.. But I can probably answer more specific queries .. :/
what about bookstores with extra stuff, not sure what to call them
in Romania there's a chain of bookstores called "Carturesti" but they sell a lot of other stuff
what extra stuff?
12:29
like tea, board games and so on
also they're the only ones who sell Skullcandy headphones
and Moleskines
in Romania
@radical your info was fine for me :)
it really feels like a hipster heaven from this POV
I would never buy skullcandy phones, they have such crappy audio quality
that doesn't help me find a name for the shop tho
let's check google
store / shop, tea, bookstore
@AlexM. sounds like that if you ever visit finland, you might want to visit verkkokauppa.com in Helsinki, Tampere or Oulu
12:32
shrug I guess it's a bookstore
There are some shops here like that.. Bangalore had 'landmark' . But no tea, and you can't sit down and play
@radical yeah they let you play board games here
and also they make tea for you if you want
That sounds really nice
the interiors are always clean and neatly organized
I know one shop in helsinki like that, you can play board games there and paint warhammer figures
12:33
it's really nice to go there yeah
I should move off the ipad now..
Brb
@Lasse is there a big difference between helsinki and the other cities in terms of available shops?
well, yeah
@radical looks good!
around helsinki there lives about a million people
and there are only 5 million in finland total
so it is the largest single area of shopping and such
12:40
nice, old buildings all over
it's like in my city
yeah, helsinki is old city
relatively old
Cluj-Napoca's center:
I was looking to rent an apartment in one of those old buildings
it was funny to see a wooden access staircase
the apartment was great too but it was too small and the owner decided to compensate by building a platform for the bed, on which you could get by using a not very secure-looking staircase
I was too afraid I'd fall down if too sleepy
so I didn't take it
I slept my first years of my childhood in a similar bed
never fell down
I hate heights so I'd be too nervous anyway
AlexM., I feel like visiting your city now!
12:46
:D
I have visited Cluj-Napoca, it was quite hot for a finn
and I heard it gets even hotter in summer
yup, there are cases of old people dying due to the heat
Taxis were so cheap I took one every time I had to go somewhere
Only once I used a bus
my apartment is located on this street (Horea)
there are old buildings pretty much everywhere
cool
12:50
hmm I believe I went on top of that hill
not sure
The closest I got to Romania was Salzburg
I traveled to Germany a long time ago and passed through Hungary and Austria, but I don't remember anything anymore
but Austria is one of the countries that I want to explore as much as possible
Karelian pasty (karjalanpiirakka) is a traditional Finnish dish made from a thin rye crust with a filling of rice. Butter, often mixed with boiled egg (eggbutter or munavoi), is spread over the hot pastries before eating.
this looks good
and oh boy they taste good
especially with munavoi
there's also a variant where potato is used instead of rice, but they are not as good in my opinion
look at the bump mapping on that building
dem bumps
12:59
@Lasse related to Romania being hot
The absolute minimum temperature was −38.5 °C (−37.3 °F), registered near BraÈ™ov in 1942. The absolute maximum temperature was 44.5 °C (112.1 °F), recorded at Ion Sion, Brăila County in 1951.
the average in Bucharest during Summer is ~30 deg C
that absolute minumum is more familiar for finnish people
record high was 43 deg C in July
not that low in here usually, but still
is finland colder than norway or are they similar?
over here , if the temperature goes below 20 C , people take out their sweaters
13:01
norway is directly on the.. uhh.. whatever that warm stream in the atlantic ocean is in english
endrohat, not in northern India
mumbai is hot as hell
The Gulf Stream, together with its northern extension towards Europe, the North Atlantic Drift, is a powerful, warm, and swift Atlantic ocean current that originates at the tip of Florida, and follows the eastern coastlines of the United States and Newfoundland before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The process of western intensification causes the Gulf Stream to be a northward accelerating current off the east coast of North America. At about , it splits in two, with the northern stream crossing to Northern Europe and the southern stream recirculating off West Africa. The Gulf Stream in...
that's it
gulf stream
I have found out that Bitdefender (a Romanian antivirus company) advises its programmers to use yoda conditions because 'it reduces the chance to do a = b instead of a == b'
man it'd be hell to work in such a place
yoda conditions?
13:04
@Lasse so it's warmer?
@Lasse if (null == reference)
a friend of mine likes egyptian braces :/
if (5 == i)
Jon
Jon
if (3 <= hat) { 3 = hat;}
> Northern parts of Norway lie close to the Arctic zone, most of which is covered with ice and snow in winter. However, almost all of Norway's coast remains free of ice and snow throughout the year.[29] Weather systems warmed by the Gulf Stream drift into Northern Europe, also warming the climate behind the Scandinavian mountains.
So yeah, norway could be a bit warmer
but it has more coastline than finland, and the coast goes up to the northern ice sea too
so I'm not sure about the overall average
i wish java had === operator instead of instanceof
13:08
@AlexM. that's ridiculous
I know
I asked the guy what sort of editors they use, and how they compile
don't they tell the compiler to issue maximum warnings?
my compiler says "Hey! Did you really mean to do an assignment there?
Since I don't allow any warnings on my projects, it gets noticed.
yup
speaking of which, it pains me when I download a 3rd party plugin for unity
and it introduces warnings :(
I have to manually suppress them all
oh fuck
there's no excuse for that shit
13:48
On a somewhat related note, Dragonball Z: Battle of Z has proven pretty fun so far
My only complaint would be that the fighting does seem a little shallow / could use a little more depth but its still a good time
i want to learn how to do that air ring thing
how the hell does that even work. fluid mechanics are a mysterious thing.
dolphins do it too
OH SNAP
I absolutely LOVE how it chomps at it right at the end
makes me giggle
OMNOMNOM
14:04
wtf man
I'm not very well informed; were people able to build robots capable of taking the pressure found at the lowest point in the ocean?
I'd so want to see a recording of the bottom of the ocean there
I think so
James Cameron went down there, didn't he?
Obviously he discovered the sunken Titanic
click that to see it
beluga whales blow these rings, too
it must be fun
14:07
and delicious
"Bubble rings and smoke rings are both examples of vortex rings—the physics of which is still under active study in fluid dynamics."
that's some freaky-ass shit man
let's not start a deep physics discussion again haha
++
I need timeout privileges for when the room gets unruly... Oh well
with great privileges comes great responsi... chicks
that's what my aunt used to say
she was a lesbian
its probably true
14:21
@JoshPetrie I have a question for you, but it's not public. Could you email me here [email protected]? It's nothing huge; just not public. :)
14:36
OLLA!
hi bb
Hi Almo!
Do u use IRC?
I wonder if there is game dev IRC channel.
there is, one on afternet, one on freenode
compare to chat.stackexchange.game_dev, which one would you say "better", if either one of them is better (or just different)
I actually haven't used those much, so can't say.
14:43
I have used IRC on a few occasions
I used to be logged in there, but was too busy with other stuff at that time, so, ..
i would prefer this since it links to questions on the site
mostly I was on mono or kernel channels..
I would appreciate some feedback/opinion on IRC(if game-dev related, even better), I am under pressure of using IRC in my class.
in general, irc is great :D on SE, this is pretty much the only good channel that I have found. Most of the opensource devs(non-gamedev) that I know use only IRC
but this is just opinion
not sure if that helps you
14:47
from your experience, IRC, mostly for non-gamedevs?
no no :D I just meant that I have hung out mostly in non-gamedev channels!
aha.
I'm not really a gamedev, i'm a wannabe :D
I remember talking to some people on #gamedev once.. they seemed friendly and helpful
the cocos2d/iOS/Android SE channel is good
the place to avoid is the C++ Lounge.
yeah, that and this, are the two rooms i hang out in
14:49
u so humble. 2.3k ps.
about this room, IMO, there are people with all kinds of backgrounds, but all very passionate, that is the part i like best
and there are people like myself who declare themselves as the game dev, yet struggle with simple shader effect.
heh this editing thing is nice
game developers make games
not shaders
people here are very welcoming :)
14:54
that's right. and I still call myself the game dev
my ego so big. Me make games.
and I also bash newbies for their lack of experience.
really?
Jon
Jon
Once you achieve the title of game dev, everyone else just sucks.
even other game devs suck compared to you.
yes. Very true. It is that I merely notice how better I am inherently.
@BlueBug All good, that's what keeps me supplied with steady short-term jobs
lol
I am taking physics-simulation class.
Is it viable(starting from knowing only basic linear/rotation momentum) to make basic rigid shape(box,pyramid..etc) based physics engine within 5 month?
Jon
Jon
15:06
no.
LOL, j/k -- you could build a physics engine in a day if you really wanted to.
A realistic one, not so much.
how about, soft body, a towel? Towel simulation.
@BlueBug much much more difficult
Jon
Jon
Soft body is harder -- its the collision response that is difficult, not the collision detection
something like this, no?
how about no collision at all, just the clothe like this.
user92578
15:26
What's up guys?
user92578
singing Why in the world I'm not able to load my OpenGL texture properly?
I'm learning how to interview and evaluate programmers
tricky business :(
Jon
Jon
hint, they all are horrible.
I would try to generate a small texture, simple checkered pattern, in memory, and use that, just to confirm which side the issue lies
user92578
Good code -> Good programmer
user92578
15:32
Bad code -> Bad programmer
user92578
@radical The problem is not in displaying the texture correctly, but in loading it
are you sure? that is the part that i wanted to confirm
if the generated texture works, then the issue is in loading or accessing the raw image.. if it doesn't, then problem with how you pass the data to opengl
user92578
The program doesn't crash so the problem is probably in the passing data to GL
or possibly the shader itself, which can also be fun to debug
@Tyyppi_77 not that simple; there's the social aspect, and since he's going to be doing a project almost alone, he's gotta have good UI skills.
15:36
he is not using shaders, AFAIK
user92578
No way I'm using shaders
user92578
:)
ah. is there any easy lib for adding sound to c++ projects? I feel like adding sound is way harder than graphic programming.
fmod
directsound?
15:39
is directsound MS made?
Jon
Jon
openal?
@BlueBug yes
Jon
Jon
directsound is part of directx
fmod, I tried. It is still too many steps for me. Any even easier lib? Like load(path).play();
Jon
Jon
OpenAL
So what are you doing ? writing in pure c++?
15:42
@MickLH ._o
Jon
Jon
Why don't use use SDL or something?
not pure, but c++. Making opengl game. I just wanted to add BG for last touch. It's taking me forever, however.
Jon
Jon
ah, well OpenAL has similar syntax to OpenGL
doesn't have any insta .play() functions though
user92578
Once again it's almost time for
user92578
15:44
cross out "quit" too. just rage.
it always helps
@Grey ?
4 hours ago, by MickLH
And, I need to speak with @hasherr about something, @grey too
OTL why hadn't anyone make easy load().play() style lib. It's damn sound. I just want to play a music. That's all I want. (sob)
Godot Engine hates buttons that say "OK"
Or you can x
15:47
yeah
blind people click on x
It's kind of weird that they have an X button and then an I see... button both which do the same thing
Lol
for obvious reasons
sometimes I click the x instead, just because it feels like giving a middle finger to the program for not doing what I wanted
and so we go back to that rage thing
> Chain Reaction
I want this as a theme
even though I have no idea what to make lol
or replication
O-o i dont know what i had done but my speakers are screamming in pain instead playing beautiful music
15:53
@BlueBug lol
user92578
Not a fan of metal music?
user92578
lol
hey now, metal screams are not screams of pain. they're screams of power, rage, and general badassery.
said the metal fan
Wow.
Does it mean that my computer is somehow expressing its feelings through my code
15:56
This guy keeps asking Unity questions
I must treat it gently now on
my favorite metal ablum is probably Psalm 69
@IcyDefiance lol you make me feel lame for listening to this right now youtube.com/watch?v=RZuJ_OHBN78 :(
as you should
user92578
Yeah
15:58
yep
:(
I do agree that metal and screaming is a great way to covey emotions though
some emotions can only be conveyed that way actually
user92578
Jon
Jon
@AlexM. you still using godot?
yeah
I'm making a game with orbs
Yes
much support
15:59
hoping to finish it today
very orb
user92578
wow?
Jon
Jon
needs more orbs.
