@AliceD any thoughts about this one? biology.stackexchange.com/q/29759/11652 question on layers of the cortex
05:48
@StanShunpike I do. I have seen the question,of course :), but it's hard to answer. The thing is that the layered cortex is not a model, it is an established neuro anatomical circuitry. It is not a matter of right or wrong.

@StanShunpike I can write up an answer, since it has been unanswered so long. It's an interesting question, but my answer may not be satisfactory.

@StanShunpike Note that you are also very welcome to post an answer (complete or partial) to your own question, if you have read-up on the subject further after posting the question.

@StanShunpike I just found some interesting material :) I'll try to come up with an answer over the weekend.

@AliceD Excellent! Thanks! I also found an interesting article on the subject by Gordon Shepard ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3102215 He's the author of several textbooks including The Synaptic Organization of the Brain and has been a proponent of content-addressable memory approaches to smell.
@WYSIWYG I thought we had settled on The Biosphere as the name. Did that not happen?
16:25
@StanShunpike very soon..
I thought Biodome was good too, but it didn't seem to catch on.
17:08
perhaps The Vesicle ?
Darwin's Playground has been taken (it's a terrible terrible statue outside my workplace)

Is attention an emotion?
I'm a bit confused in my example here
21:26
@Resonating Taken by who/what? If you have a suggestion, why not post an answer to that question?
@FaheemMitha There's a statue called that. I don't have any good suggestions. Certainly none I like more than the biosphere
@Resonating ok, fair enough.
And what is a terrible, terrible statue? Do you have a picture of it?
If it's those green, yellow and red monstrosities, then never mind.
Wow, people get paid to do this? Nice work if you can get it.
Hmm, he's a faculty member at UIC. That seems appropriate - their campus is a monstrosity too.
Oh I'm so glad you hate it. It is those! They're even worse up close. They crack and collect water when it rains.
@Resonating I'm sure you can't be the only person there to hate it. What do your colleagues think?
@FaheemMitha They all hate it too. I'm glad it's not cultural hate but uiversal human hate
21:42
BTW, I remember someone (at UNC) who had visited the UIC campus as a student applicant, and memorably said there were two things you could do there: (1) buy some crack (2) leave.
@Resonating I'm not sure what that means. But Ok.
