Q: "How to tell your grandparent to not come to fetch you with their car?" is on topic?

@Ælis: Morning :) (And GaMen to everyone else :) ) Check out that meta, it is against your recent OP. And I would somewhat agree. The post looked fine to me till I hit the last line of clarifications saying: You think lying isn't an option and you would prefer rather than giving a not real reason a nice way to say "don't drive me because I don't trust your driving ability anymore". But if that's the only possible answer, isn't it in that case nothing but a phrasing request? chinscretch

Morning everyone!

A J
@avazula Good Morning!

Morning AJ :)
how are you today?

A J
@avazula Good and feeling sleepy. What about you?

@AJ about the same :)

6:16 AM
@dhein I have an idea of answer for this but I'm unsure

A J
@avazula How come you're feeling sleepy? :P
You're not sick, are you?

No :) I'm stressed. Last day of work, I don't sleep very well. You know what you leave, not what you'll get in the near future... My brain freaks out a little bit, especially past midnight lol

A J
That can't be a coincidence. Same here. ;)
It happens every other day.

@AJ you're changing jobs too?

A J
@avazula yes, I am also looking for a new job.

6:26 AM
@AJ ooh! Good luck to you then :)

A J
@avazula Thank you. :)

I'll start my new one on Thursday. Yay, vacation hump day!
Do you think I can get unemployment money for one day? lol

@avazula I don't know about France, but over here it's pretty hard to get if you leave your previous job voluntarily :P

@Tinkeringbell oh you're right, I forgot about that :p

A J
6:42 AM
@avazula here you don't get it if total income of your family is good.

@dhein Thanks for the ping :) As for my question being a phrasing request, I'm also interest in the setting (in person vs on the phone, alone in a quiet place or during a regular family meal, etc.. )
Also, if I had ask about nice way to not tell them the truth, then it would have been a phrasing request (IMO)

Pfft. Your question is getting some baad answers @Ælis :(

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, but at least they aren't rude, so that's always that

Yeah... I wonder if we can do anything to make it clearer to new users that they shouldn't bother writing an answer if they can't substantiate it :/

6:58 AM
@Tinkeringbell I suppose you don't have some "notice" (I don't know the name, but it's like the protect one) that would so the trick? Otherwise, I can try putting something at the end of my question

@Ælis I don't have a notice, and I don't think 'the end of a question' is where it's supposed to go... just a sec, I have an idea.
There... there weren't really that much answers in comments, but hey XD No one can see that XD

Ahah x) I hope it will do the trick :p

@Ælis I think it might've done it's trick very well on Rainbacon's HNQ question...
That one had only two answers that weren't backed up.
And only one was posted after the I dropped a similar comment there...

7:39 AM
@Ælis Well, I agree with you, just the last edit kinda makes it look a tiny bit too narrow. But avas meta post made a good point there :) Aaaaand yw :)

8:07 AM
I think my mother gave me her cold last weekend. I'm not feeling very well :/

8:17 AM
@Ælis Ugh. Hope it gets better soon... colds are no fun to have.

Some cold are better than other, but this one comes with headache :/ But yeah, I hope it won't last long

8:33 AM
@Ælis Ugh, those (and the ones where you're coughing until your muscles hurt) are the worst.

@Tinkeringbell Not sure I experience those. But I have experience with the one where you can't stop coughing and feels like you can't breath anymore/are going to throw up and it's definitively awfull
(thankfully I don't have this right now)

@Ælis Oh yeah, that's awful too :P For me, that usually is what gives me the muscle aches :P

8:49 AM
@Tinkeringbell Well then, I guess I don't mind the muscle aches as much as not being able to stop coughing

I feel like coughing
It's just like yawning. You talk about it and yawns

Q: Ambiguous and awkward situation with a coworker/crush

BertholletCONTEXT: I live in France, am 23 and I have had a crush on a coworker (21) for about 6 months and told her so around 1 month and a half ago in no uncertain terms. We had been talking regularly, about personal topics such as family, emotions, our convictions and beliefs, projects for the future, ...

2 hours later…
10:41 AM
@ExtrovertedMainMan Hmm. I'm not too fond of the 'specifically wording/phrasing' part...
Fixed it :P

JAD
@Tinkeringbell smells like RelationshipSE type question to me

@JAD Yeah, kinda...

It's critical to ask a question like "would I be treating this person differently, if they were a man". If the answer is "yes", then it's all on you, the instigator, for correcting the situation. Do not "confront" someone, simply because you have "feelings" for them. Save that for the bars, or wherever you seek out candidates for intimacy. The workplace is not that place -- it is not a hunting ground for horny men. (Or at least it shouldn't be, all evidence to the contrary.) — michael 21 secs ago

It's one of those where the whole story is a bit heavy-handed, and outshining the actual question.

Hey even a bot shouldn't be talked to like that... he has fee... he... eh.... just don't :D
But.... well, I that new post about the awkward situation even on topic? I am not too sure about it. In the core it looks ontopic, but the OP itself looks very broad and unclear prhased about whats being asked for. But yeh dunno, as usual '^.^

anyone here with experience in Javascript and jquery?

@dhein Yeah, I'm kinda... conflicted on it. The actual part in the last paragraph seems on-topic, in that it's about sending a message that OP doesn't want to be used, doesn't want to receive silent treatment except for when he's needed... Then again, like I said, the story there is probably outshining the actual question... :/
@Termatinator Nope, sorry :(

11:14 AM
@Tinkeringbell yeeeeh. :x But also wouldn't it the way it is actually even be different questions? I feel a bit nitpicky on that one, but still

@dhein I'm hoping OP responds to my last comment soon, then I think I can give the post an edit that basically turns it into a question of 'How can I talk with my coworker about her possibly using me when it's suitable for her, but treating me cold and distant otherwise'
(With a condition of: I want her to know I'm not to be used like that', and bonus points for anyone that can work in an approach that allows me to find out why she's doing this') :P

@avazula: done :)

@dhein Thank you. And thanks for the singular they! I really appreciate.

YW :)
I was wondering, does the he she it 's rule apply for singular they too? ^^
would sound weird but grammatically, I'd assume it should apply

@dhein when using "they" and "them", you conjugate in plural ... it was confusing for me too at first but now I believe it sounds much better that way :)

yep, it also is less exhausting when writing and allways having to remember which gender one was actually having. This way I now just dont have to care anymore anyways ^^

I started thinking about it when I saw you talking about it here a few days ago and decided to addapt it :)

11:59 AM
"They" is sort of like "you" - it still retains the grammatical form of being plural, even when it's not. English.

Now I am confused :X

You would write "you are" even if the "you" is only one person. "are" is plural - you don't write "you is". This is because, like "they", "you" used to be plural. Now it's both plural and singular, like "they". (In fact, singular "they" has usages dating further back than singular "you", so... take that, singular "they" deniers.)
(English is confusing. Yeah.)

@ExtrovertedMainMan Okay, pretty massive edit made, what do y'all think?

@Tinkeringbell Sounds good to me :)

(If anyone can come up with a better title, I'm still open for recommendations...)

12:13 PM
@Tinkeringbell Maybe: "How to know if my coworker wants us to be friends or simply coworker?". The "using me" part feels a bit too much HNQ to me
@Tinkeringbell Wow, OP seems to have really appreciated your edit!

ooh, I just posted an answer, I need to make sure it's still valid

@Ælis Aww :D That's certainly nice to read :)

adding to this answer since it is the 'best' one: @dhein you could simply ping the service. The difference between a timeout and a 'can't connect' or rather 'can't reach' will become obvious even to a layman. @Tinkeringbell You should remove all the comment under this question except this one. So that everyone could know that we all are a "bunch of nice fellows" :P

@Ælis Like that? :P
(I prefer at least leaving my comment up for a while, to remind people to answer the actual question ;) )
I might write up an answer on communication context and reciprocity there tonight, when I have my book... Seems fitting.
@Ælis I've also been thinking about 'how to have a conversation with a coworker about receiving mixed signals that are confusing me'

@Tinkeringbell That sounds better to me, less "clickbaity". And this question will definitively hit HNQ, IMO (so hurry up in writing your answer if you want the maximum of upvote :p )

Nah, I don't write answers for upvotes. Besides, it'll be at least another hour before I can go a pack my bag, then another one and a half or something before I'm home, and then I still have to eat dinner first ;)
I'm also not very sure if this will hit HNQ, as long as no-one upvotes the answers/question we're safe XD
You can make the title edit if you want to :)

@Tinkeringbell Alright, I'll take care of that :)

@Ælis Thank you :) (If you're copy-pasting, don't forget to capitalize the first letter and put in a question mark :P)

12:43 PM
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I must really do everything by myself with you not even able to write something that can be copy-paste as it is! :p

I'm sorry.. I am still at work, you know :P And I think I spent at least 30 minutes on that edit!

@Tinkeringbell Hey, I'm supposed to be working too! And you did an amazing work with this edit. Now, if you really want to use your "I'm at work" excuse, stop chatting with me! :p

Hmmm. Perhaps I should XD
But I don't want too :P
My coworker made this amazing sugary chocolate cake thingy, and shared it... now I had two pieces and I'm not really capable of focussing anymore (Hey look, a squirrel!)

@Tinkeringbell Oh, that sounds nice! Some of my coworkers did bring some Aïd pastry this morning. It was nice, even if I wasn't really hungry

@Ælis Hehehe. I didn't even associate it with Aïd... it also wasn't for that that he brought the cake :P But now I'm going to tease him with that :P

12:50 PM
@Tinkeringbell Don't tease him too much, or else he won't bring you any pastry anymore :p

Hehehe oh, he will :P Baking is one of his outlets ;)

@Tinkeringbell I always believe that people who like cooking are the most useful friends to have :p

Yep! Definitely true, especially as I dislike cooking myself :P

I wonder what people who like cooking find to be the most useful skill for their friend? Maybe being able to help with computers?

@Ælis Doing dishes :P

12:57 PM
@Tinkeringbell Well, my sister does like the fact that I don't mind doing the dishes but hate cooking. When spent some holidays alone together and she was the one cooking when I was the one cleaning. It did work well

@Ælis Yep, I usually make similar agreements with my brother if there's no parents around: Either each cooks for their own, and also cleans their own mess, or I cook and he cleans (we have dishwasher, but he also has to clean the counter)

@Tinkeringbell With my sisters, we never cook for our own. However, we do share the cooking sometimes, like I cook the rice and she cooks the other stuff

@Ælis My brother is a picky eater, so sometimes I make something nice for me and he just heats up a microwave meal :P
If we had to agree on meals for a whole week, we'd have a serious problem (been there, tried that, didn't work).

Well, with my little sister (not the one I went on holidays with) we use to eat on our own every Wednesday. And, since she can be picky + I hate cooking, the Wednesday often ended up just being a pasta day ^^ (with some vegetable already ready to eat)

every day is sandwich day

1:08 PM
Boooooooring :P

You just have to find a way to spice up sandwiches...

peppers?
or apple slices

Like, take a piece of bread. Put a slice of cheese on it. Add garlic. Add tuna. Stick in toaster oven for three and a half minutes. Eat.

@Mithrandir Now that I live on my own, I do tend to have the exact same meal every weekday ^^' (lunch is different from dinner but every diner are the same and every lunch are the same)

Also, our calendar is way neater. The first 6 months are 31 days, the next 5 months are 30, and the last month is 29 or 30, depending on whether it's a leap year

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Then how do you know it's a minus sign and not a n-dashes disguised as a minus sign?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ A minus sign is not an IPS mod in a foot race.

@Mithrandir ... XD

@Mithrandir Valid point, for once.
@Ælis The minus sign is actually bigger than an endash, it's the same size as an emdash
The difference is the minus sign doesn't allow for line breaks after it.
@Tinkeringbell Hey I'm the one who comes from a language site, you can't throw that at me
You can throw it at Mith.

Yeah
Rather, Quran.
You'd expect it to be Quran on a 98% Muslim country ;)
But AFAIK there is also a similar verse in Quran.
Yep.

Interestingly, AFAIK, the Arabic یوم (= day) also has both "24-hour" and "age" meanings.
Arabic and Hebrew are of the same roots.

5:18 PM
English does as well, I would argue. Why, back in the day...the good old days...

English is just a bunch of languages stuck together with duct tape.
Flagging Shakespeare for plagiarism

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ That's quite brave to assume that we used something as nice as duct tape to hold our language together

@Rainbacon Adhesive tapes?

I'm not sure it's even tape
It might just be something sticky that they found, like honey or tree sap

Actually, it's just balanced. Precariously.

Interesting data gleaned from the site analytics: Friday is our lowest traffic day of the week.

For Christianity.SE, Saturday usually beats out Friday. Amendment: if I look over a longer period of time (3 months), it's usually Friday or Saturday that's the lowest (and the other is usually the second lowest).

The bot didn't report it here, but this comment is fairly rude
@El'endiaStarman I was surprised, I figured saturday or sunday would be our lowest

Naturally, traffic was a lot higher around Easter.

@Rainbacon Good call! It looks like this has been flagged and removed. Give yourself a pat on the back. :P

Interestingly, thus far our return to HNQ hasn't had a noticable impact on our friday traffic (though it has increased our traffic on all other days)
Well, I guess proportionally it's not as un-noticeable as I thought. +20% or so on Fridays compared to +50% or more on the other days

7:01 PM
@Rainbacon I think that, due to do time zone, we don't have the same data. For me it clearly show that your lowest traffic is on Saturday, shortly follow by Sunday
(my mousse was on the lower dot)

Interesting, I assumed that the data was based on UTC rather than a user's local timezone

@Ælis Should probably clean off your screen then.
> A mousse is a soft prepared food that incorporates air bubbles to give it a light and airy texture.

@El'endiaStarman Oupsi x)

Isn't mousse a French dessert to begin with? :P

I figured that was the reason for the typo. :)

7:06 PM
Also, I'm interested in seeing how the traffic sources data changes over the next few weeks. Right now it's saying that 83% of our traffic comes from search engines. I'm wondering how much that will drop as our stay on HNQ increases.

@scohe001 A "mousse au chocolat" is. Otherwise, "mousse" is more generally used to talk about foam

I'm not sure. He says that he used it to help his nieces become more active, but that doesn't really mean anything in the context of the question of how Ælis can get their grandparents to stop picking them up in a car

Yeah, you're right..it still kinda missed the point of communicating the part about not wanting to drive because it feels dangerous.

The answer acknowledges that it doesn't address that part, but the backup itself does not (in my opinion) give a reader any reason to believe that using that technique will get the grandparents to stop driving

@Rainbacon I think it does actually: OP states that this way, he got around the mom's offer to drive.
As I read the question, that's what Ælis wants, not to have the grandparents to entirely stop driving, but just stop picking them up?

8:46 PM
He didn't really get around the mom's offer to drive, he got the nieces to decline the offer

@Rainbacon Oh, the way I interpreted it, he got asked to ride with mom and nieces...
I mean, it makes no sense to me otherwise XD Why would the nieces walk with you if you weren't going the same place? But I dropped a comment to ask for clarification :)

Idk, I'm finished with work in 6 minutes and my fiancee is waiting outside my office for me. I haven't seen her in almost 2 weeks due to travel, so I can't focus on much else right now

so don't, go enjoy yourself :)

^ That, times a 1000 :P

@Mithrandir That's the plan

9:06 PM
You can't focus on enjoying it?
