I would like to clarify that this answer addresses offensive advances, verbal and otherwise, from people who would do well to be ashamed of their inconsiderate and disrespectful behavior. I.e. they don't care about anyone but themselves, so only something which affects them will supply any motivation to change. Of course, it would be less advisable if the person was socially awkward and simply had no idea how offensive their behavior was; those such people could genuinely care to improve their behavior, and embarrassment could likely cause them to simply withdraw and never learn anything. — can-ned_food 27 secs ago

In my experience, there is very little which will stop a smoker smoking. It's an addiction, and if you can't stand it, the date's not going to go well. I'd just be upfront about it, don't get involved if they smoke. — AJFaraday 8 mins ago

I'll end by answering that, as i think it's terribly wrong: "So the old line that being drunk just shows us the real you is true, and the real you treats women like shareable objects.", no, as you said earlier, alcool takes away our capacity to care what's wrong and what's not (and i completely agree with this), as such your own argument invalidate itself. You can't tell whether or not i think what i say is wrong/right. If i was to say, ofc it's wrong and i know it, it's not something i would say/joke with under normal circonstances. but overall thanks, that was an interesting reading :). — xoxel 1 min ago

+1 for giving an additional perspective. However, I'd like to point out that the premise of the question was not "Close friend is visiting", it specifically was about "people I know (even just passing acquaintances)" (verbatim quote from OP). I don't expect to discuss my relationship (or anything very private) with passing acquaintances. — Flo 42 secs ago

+1 for specifying that it is her decision to make, not yours. @ OP, I would also consider the fact that, while the age may have made a difference in the early part of your relationship, it may not be an issue at all, now that the two of you are getting to know each other, and enjoying each other's physical and virtual company — HeebieJeebies 1 min ago

@AaronF Sorry to hear about your bad experience Aaron. I like to think the ridiculousness of the suggest (wanting to have kids based on a single meal out) plus the way it is delivered (tone of voice, body language and so on) would make it fairly obvious it is being suggested as a joke and hence there would be no awkwardness but YMMV! Know your audience I guess. I don't think I'll ever get you onside for an upvote here but anything I can do to the answer get the downvote reversed? — RyanfaeScotland 27 secs ago

What is it that you hope to achieve? It sounds like your sister is already aware of the impact on her health, as you mentioned she tries to be healthy. Do you want to give your sister advice on how she can improve? Also, do you actually consider her unhealthy, or just heavier than what you see as her ideal weight? Because they are two different things. You say that you're sure she wants to lose some weight, but has she actually told you this? — Fodder 1 min ago

"Also, when I consult my plans with him" ...You indicated it was necessary for you to confirm the details of the plans with him. Is it really? I understand the perceived need for his input including accessibility, but you've known him long enough to have a general idea of his abilities and concerns. If I were in his position I could certainly imagine preferring to just show up someplace and if it's hard to get to, make a new plan, rather than doing the hard investigative work of searching for the information (especially tiresome when its part of your everyday life). — Bryan Krause 1 min ago

This post references the lyrics to the Gotye song "Somebody That I Used To Know" - it indeed makes no sense to respond with "you didn't have to cut me off" if somebody has told you "now, you're just somebody that I used to know" because they are sung by the same character. Not sure if this is really a troll or just humorous effort toward a question. — Bryan Krause 6 secs ago
