I agree with the advice to communicate, but to me the second script in your response is way better than the first. She might be sharing these conversations as a courtesy to OP ("I don't want you to think I'm sneaking behind your back") in which case telling her it's unwelcome may cause hurt feelings. Probably better to start by establishing "why" before criticising the behaviour, even gently. — Geoffrey Brent 10 secs ago

I'm going to bend the rules here, because it may ultimately save lives... Whenever someone is non-responsive call an ambulance or take them to a hospital. You have no idea what they've taken or how much they've taken, all you know is that you can't wake them up. Better to error on the side of caution in these situations. Would you rather be the guy who was too cautious and landed someone in jail, or the guy who could have saved a life and didn't? What's going to bother your conscious more? I know that's not a great choice, but "save the life" is always the right answer. — apaul 30 secs ago

Great answer, but I have to disagree with labeling his behavior as narcissism. We (all) react because we are triggered by things from the past. There are simple exercises to distinguish these triggers, my wife and I use them when they seem to pop up. — Jan Doggen 1 min ago

Basically anything that doesn't give a sense of urgency. You can even have a colleague wave at you from their desk but immediately turn back to their monitor instead of holding their gaze at you. Then you can basically wrap up what you were doing and pay attention to them. I found that emails for nonurgent things are the best, you can read them in batches. Nonprogrammers need to be aware that we're putting pieces of puzzles (code) in our heads and a context switch wipes them out, leaving us only with most important conclusions, unable to effectively continue. That was a great pun though :) — Ctrl-C 55 secs ago

@Jon.G "Dogs are not intrinsically dangerous, that is just your opinion." I would disagree with this. Untrained and non-neutered dogs are inherently aggressive and dangerous. Trained, vaccinated, neutered dogs (i.e "modified" dogs we have as pets) are safe. The UK statistics may not apply to his location, and certainly do not apply to stray dogs. — Alexandre Aubrey 1 min ago

Agree. It took me a while to understand that they are better left with their own self-centered conversations rather than interrupt and divert. They are destructive in a sense; because the persons I have mentioned about, have the knack to mislead people with their conversations. The charm they possess is rather interesting. They are instigators and the opposite person would never even realize that they are merely becoming relays of instigators. But, I did divert those conversations eons ago, and I face those death stares now. Was wondering how to deal with it. — Sara 17 secs ago

@Hennes: agreed. That was the problem in XVII century Versailles (Louis XIV times): people were pouring perfume (and sometimes changing shirts, the king at least did that), just almost never bathed. — WoJ 5 secs ago
