Not a full answer, but if I want/need to learn something then I ask when it's not urgent (i.e. the tyre, try it out when you don't have a flat tyre). For situation like the smoke alarm, after the first failed attempt by the other person I just don't ask, I do: buy a new alarm, call an electrician etc; as for the "doing dangerous stuff because I can type" person: Most of the time there's nothing to be done. You could try guilt-tripping: "Please don't do it, just for me.", but that's iffy. — Marianne013 2 mins ago
