04:35
watched Beast Boy only in Teen-Titans.
05:57
@phantom42 hahhahahha
I was tricked
How many new vigilante arrow adding, i heard 3 Wild dog, Vigilante and Artemis
Looks too messed up
@KutuluMike Are they like power ranger with less creepy villain and plain uniform?

1 hour later…
07:36
Oh god, has anyone seen the new Suicide Squad character posters yet?
which one
?
@AnkitSharma Any of them.
@DrRDizzle that cartoonish one, i love that
Can't see the link
uplaod it here
07:39
There are 9, I'm not doing that.
That's the general aesthetic they all go for though.
I like this one;
But all the character posters are horrible.
@DrRDizzle that one is bleh, cartoon one were better
@DrRDizzle looks good
@AnkitSharma Well there are about 8 more like it, one for each member of the Suicide Squad. And they're all awful.
@DrRDizzle awful i don't think so, good no.
07:44
@AnkitSharma They look like something a Tumblr user would have whipped up in 5 minutes in between episodes of Steven Universe.
But i am too much invested in the film
@DrRDizzle that could have been a good idea
But end result is bleh
By the way, it's worth looking at the progression of the logo for Suicide Squad over time as evidence for the films shifting tone.
I believe that they are from the first, second and third trailer respectively.
@DrRDizzle I don't care if they changed it or not. I am more interested in final product
And i am quite positive and now i even love soundtrack
@AnkitSharma I don't think it's going to be anywhere near as vibrant or fun as the latest marketing would indicate. And I'm worried that the reshoots are going to be really, really obvious.
@AnkitSharma I don't care that they changed it, I care that they are pretending that this has always been the plan when it quite clearly hasn't.
I liked all the trailers from start, so it's fine to me
@DrRDizzle whatever
Lie don't hurt me bad film do
07:51
I think I'm more skeptical of Suicide Squad than most though.
You are always skeptical when it'd DC and too positive when it's MCU
@AnkitSharma Well Warner Bros keep making bad films, while Marvel Studios keep making good ones. Blame Warner Bros, not me.
Also, my skepticism this time comes from having seen a few David Ayer films, not from the fact that it's a DC movie.
@DrRDizzle I have tasted bad from both plates
@DrRDizzle I am judging it from trailers and they are good.
@AnkitSharma But you can't just ignore the previous works of the director. They will obviously tell you what you might be able to expect.
@DrRDizzle I have seen stuff from debut director based on trailer and loved it later on.
08:03
@AnkitSharma Obviously I'm not expecting you to judge a new director on his previous work, dude.

1 hour later…
09:04
@DrRDizzle His precious work is not my cup of tea, so i can't judge it on the basis of the film which i don't follow
@AnkitSharma I don't understand. If you don't like someones previous films, that's a perfectly valid reason to adjust your expectations about their latest film.
@DrRDizzle I don't like the genre not the film
I don't judge the film which i have not seen
@AnkitSharma But he's done a few different genre's now, including war and cop.
@DrRDizzle I know and answer remains the same
@AnkitSharma Fair enough then, I guess. There are entire genres you dislike?
09:09
I don't follow war/cop/military/spy film. With some rare exceptions
@AnkitSharma They aren't my favourite genres or anything, but I can think of some excellent films that fit into each category.
You're doing yourself a disservice by ignoring them.
Although having said that, I don't watch romantic comedies, so I'm being a bit of a hypocrite.
I rarely enjoy anything from those genres , so i go for it as a last option. But i do appreciated few like Saving private ryan, captain Phillip, shindler list
Schindler list is my all time fav
@AnkitSharma I've never seen it. I really need to fix that.
@DrRDizzle Yeah you should.
My top two fav film about nazis are Schindler list and life is beautiful. Schindler list serious business but life is beautiful is quite emotional and sometime funny too
I think both won oscar
My favourite film about Nazis at the moment is Inglorious Basterds, I think. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc or Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade comes second though.
09:20
I want to see Inglorious Basterds but i am scarred of accents
@AnkitSharma Scared of accents? What do you mean?
@DrRDizzle I don't understand all the accents and from trailer it doesn't seems like a plain american accent film
@AnkitSharma As in, you can't understand what they are saying because of their accents?
@DrRDizzle I mean i can understand most of the hollywood film but when i try something from UK or Germany, then i don't get there slang, sarcasm, jokes and sometime miss few word due to different pronunciation and accents
@AnkitSharma Would subtitles help?
Also, just so you know, Inglorious Basterds is a Quentin Tarantino film. It's an American movie, even if it starts Brits and Germans.
Plus, it's got Zemo in!
And Magneto!
And Nick Fury narrates it!
09:31
lol
k
but what kind of accent used ?
@DrRDizzle I do go for them when i have issue
@AnkitSharma Various throughout. Brad Pitt has a broad Texan (?) accent, Christoph Waltz German, Michael Myers is explicitly British.
wow, i seriously need subtitle then
My backlong is increasing too fast
I'd still recommend it, especially if you like Tarantino's other films.
Not into Tarantino that much but will give it a try later
@AnkitSharma Are you looking for cliché Nazis or historical, realistic Nazis?
10:20
@Loong I don't care about historical accuracy that much when I watch a film
small bit of here and there is fine to me
If Schindler’s List and Life Is Beautiful worked for you, you could try The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
@Loong I heard about it but didn't got my hand on it and then forgot
11:07
oh god. ankit did you just ask about character tags?
what were you thinking
on meta?
0
Q: How were all of Wolverines bones covered with Adamantium?

RincewindOk so in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movies we see clearly for the first time how his bones became covered with Adamantium but it raises another question... Who were all of his bones covered with Adamantium? If you watch the scene you will see that there are only a few places (on the major bon...

0
Q: How were Wolverines joints not frozen when he was injected with the Adamantium?

RincewindSo if we think about it they just poured liquid Adamantium over Wolverines bones but should it not have pooled and locked his joints like glue does in you put to on something movable?

12:01
@KutuluMike yes
granted, i went stupid and chimed in on a meta question as well
12:21
@DrRDizzle brad pitt is doing a tennesse/appalachian mountains accent in inglorias bastards
4
Q: In which accent does Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) speak?

ShuklaSannidhyaI don't know if Stack Exchange is the right place to ask this question but I am very keen to find out: Which accent has Brad Pitt adopted in the movie Inglourious Basterds for the role of Lieutenant Aldo Raine?

i only know that because living in tenn, meeting mountain folk, he nailed it pretty good, though most of the mountain folk butcher the spoken english language worse then ankit and i together type it
@Himarm the one time you're supposed to misspell a word, you don't.
i googled appalachian
because i spelled it appilcation
@Himarm wrong word
I CANT BE PERFECT
12:53
byran cranston playing zordon in the powerrangers reboot
13:09
@phantom42 That was genuine concern
@Himarm ROFL
...
I had other ideas too like "WTH few question have x character tag when the question is about y character and movie tag is already there?"
But now i will let the dead cat rest on the couch to save the glorious front page. I don't know why comment went to front page when my second suggestion was tag merge which never affect front page.
13:30
@AnkitSharma yeah, but character tag discussions tend to end... poorly.
we tried for a long time to get them under control
or to come up with some sensible guideline for usage
because our tagging rules make no sense. nor do our users seem to want them to.
Comments were
@Ixrec - I'm still waiting for the tiniest scrap of evidence that retagging stuff helps anyone. — Valorum 6 hours ago
@ankitsharma - I haven't seen any evidence that retagging results in anything other than low-value edits crowding new posts off of the front page. — Valorum 6 hours ago
that's a different conversation about whether or not anyone should bother fixing them
And i agree with none of the answer
13:34
versus "should there be rules to begin with?"
Dizzle said burn everything and other answer said keep everything
I am a DBA and i know the value of standardization.
What purpose serve ?
familiars are common elements in fantasy works
but pretty much...none
ok
Even nobody bothers to merge superman/clark kent and green arrow/Oliver queen
Maybe due to spoiler ?
13:39
/shrugs
was there a request for merging them?
well both arnt exlussive right?
green arrow doesnt always have to be oliver queen
@phantom42 You have not read my meta post....grrrr....., it clearly have that meta link
i glanced at it this morning on my way out the door
@Himarm then i need 4 tags for roy harper. , , and
not going to bother going into that hornets nest
13:42
roy harper is stupid tho

Q: Should [clark-kent] be a synonym of [superman]?

amaranthThe clark-kent tag has four questions and the superman tag has 341. Should clark-kent be a synonym of superman, or is there value in having both tags? The only similar situation I could find is that tom-riddle is a synonym of voldemort. There is no bruce-wayne tag. I didn't make any attempt to s...

@AnkitSharma actually, we have at least one user who would make that argument
hes a minor character
user132126
@AnkitSharma Needs 2 more people that can actually vote on it to get approved.
@Himarm i think rule was 10 question per character not minor / major
@CreationEdge that is not impossible.
13:44
the argument is that someone may not remember arsenal's real name, or may not know roy harper is arsenal, or that he's red arrow or speedy, or whatever, so the question should be tagged with multiple things in case they're searching
user132126
@AnkitSharma No, there's no rule like that, really, it was a suggestion
Just fixed up your answer; I suspect it's being downvoted because people disagree rather than because it wasn't in good English, but no harm in making sure. — Rand al'Thor ♦ 1 min ago

Q: Did the Winter Soldier and Black Widow programs ever interact?

Rogue JediThe Winter Soldier and Black Widow programs were both Soviet operations where citizens were modified and brainwashed into near-superhuman assassins and used for espionage and enemy elimination. Both were in use from soon after World War II right up to the fall of the U.S.S.R. In either the Marve...

what are thoughts about this tagging ^
what is this russian tag
lol
user132126
13:46
Exactly.
@AnkitSharma russian needs to go
user132126
I was like "Whut? WTF? lol no"
i could make the case either way for TWS
or russian tag needs to just be "Media created in Russia, using the Russian language "
really, it's the wrong tag, but i dont think we have a tag for the TWS program
nor do i think we really need one
user132126
13:48
Black-widow also should be removed, too, because it's it's about the program, not the character, and the tag is not about the program.
user132126
IE, it's not talking about Bucky and Natasha, it's talking about the operations that created them.
I want to remove Russian tag but i don't want people to come after me amd i am not going to raise meta for every single tag issue
user132126
That's our environment here, now, raise a meta about everything or do nothing
@AnkitSharma and this is why mike and i just stopped trying to help fix tags
i'll add/fix universe tags and story-id tags, but that's it
everyone wants a mess? have at it.
@phantom42 but that's not possible with old questions too
user132126
13:50
It's not even just a mess they want, but an argument
3
mike's criteria seemed to have been going well as an objective measure for character tags, and then all of a sudden it got huge backlash after we started using it
it wasn't perfect, but it was about as good as anyone could come up with
user132126
It frustrating that it's just a handful of us even involved with the discussion, but we can't come to a middle-ground?
but yeah, ad hominem attacks abound when tag discussions come up
user132126
And I feel like policy is sometimes more about who you like rather than what's better for the site.
@CreationEdge i felt like a middle ground had been reached. then all of a sudden, everyone reversed
user132126
13:54
Let's blame chat. :D-
or at least, no one was super opposed to the proposal going in, and then suddenly everyone came out to say it sucked after we started implementing
user132126
This whole Nolanverse thing only came up because stuff started hitting the front page a lot, and that seems to get people riled up.
user132126
I need to restart. brb
@CreationEdge where do you stand on spy-fi?
for me, that's the real rub. spy-fi is off topic, but nolanverse is on topic.
@phantom42 I'm afraid you need to provide me concrete proof that spy-fi is off-topic. Charts and graphs and spreadsheets, plz.
13:57
@KutuluMike i've got your charts and graphs right here, buddy
no spreadsheets?
nah, too lazy
lol
I hate blur lines and nolan trilogy vs spy-fi is a big blur line
do we actually have a meta saying "this version is on-topic, so all versions are" (e.g comics-batman is, so all batmans are)?
i know we've discussed it in chat before, but i don't recall an actual meta post argument
I don't know
user132126
14:08
@phantom42 I just mentioned this in mos, actually
user132126
in Mos Eisley, 26 mins ago, by CreationEdge
@DrRDizzle I think some spy-fi definitely doesn't qualify, but some does, so I have a hard time making any blanket statement, even internally, about them.
user132126
And 14111's answer here addresses a lot of the "issues" people have with Bond-style stuff:
user132126
10
A: Is James Bond science fiction?

user14111I believe most of the denizens of this stack exchange consider James Bond to be off topic, for no logical reason. None of your "things that place it outside the genre" carries any weight whatsoever. no aliens, alternate universes, time travel etc. Most science fiction stories have no ...

user132126
My question is... What does it hurt? Do we really think we're going to be flooded by Mission Impossible and James Bond questions? Is that realistic? I dunno.
we have 10 upvotes saying james bond is on topic
in a dupe though
user132126
14:11
But a dupe of a policy that's fairly well inclusive.
@CreationEdge that's fair. saying a genre is definitively on/off can get squirrely. to my knowledge, the bourne movies never get really sci-fi in any way. but bond and MI do (MI, maybe moreso)
the first scene of MI he takes off a perfect mask
user132126
The Piers Brosnan Bond movies got really sci-fi, but I never watched them.
user132126
An invisible car?
a giant space lazer that can destroy anything
is the theme to die another day
with 2 people who have complete face and dna changes
fingerprints the works
thats pretty sci-fi ish to me
halley barry
ontopic
14:16
Didn't Bond travel to space once, to like a moon base or something?
welp
theres the shared universe questions
next will be a straight up should we make spyfi ontopic
that covers shared universes, but what about same franchise, different universe?
e.g. batman
user132126
@Himarm It'll get closed as dupe.
user132126
Which is stupid and circular.
i see rand wants to
which is awesome
user132126
14:25
Where at?
because for the past 7 months, everyone has been saying gilles' old guidelines are no longer good enough
but then he says gilles answer covers it
thats exactly why i asked this question meta.scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/9549/…
we the people of sci-fi fantasy are not the people who started this site
dam near all of them have quit
we shouldnt have to deal with circle jerk closes to re-ask questions settled by dead people 5 years ago
@Himarm or they've been "exiled"
the weirdest part of all of this, is that our mod hasnt seen any sci-fi movie ever made
i dont mind continuing to use gilles guidelines, but you can't say they're no longer applicable when you don't like them, but that they are when it's convenient for you
14:30
marvel dc starwars nope
user132126
When I read Gille's answer, it seems pretty clear that there's leeway towards spy-fi, and it already can be on topic.
hadn't he not even finished the books he's named after? or am i thinking of someone else?
thats him too
@CreationEdge gilles answer was very inclusive
its been a year and a half since he said he stoped reading them
at book 10 out of 14
@CreationEdge its that little line about animals that pissed me off about gilies answer, or rather how our people handle that line /sigh
user132126
14:33
Ergh, this stupid SDK... I'll BBL
@phantom42 and yet, when I had the nerve to ask if we needed to revisit our guidelines and make sure they still represented community opinion I got skewered
"Can you provide me some concrete evidence that making these on-topic hurts the site?"
3
that's now my automatic response to every meta question.
i'm just going to alternate between "42" and "spoon"
maybe throw in an occasional "rum"

Yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me.

@mazurka - If it wasn't for all the liberal nay-sayers, nuclear power would be really awesome, practically limitless and dirt cheap. — Valorum 11 mins ago
wtf
...
when he gets political is when i really remember he doesn't live in the US
I didn't realise nuclear opposition was a leftwing stance.
@DrRDizzle generally, it's not
So what's he on about with the phrase "liberal nay-sayers"?
US liberals typically want 100% renewable power, or nuclear as an alternative.
nuclear is definitely not the "liberal" option, but many are open to it
@DrRDizzle hell if i know
it boils down to liberals wanting to get away from fossil fuels. beyond that, depending on how left you go, you start balancing wind/solar and nuclear
this is a gross simplification, of course
15:34
newsmax.com/US/gallup-americans-oppose-nuclear/2016/03/18/id/… its less favorable by dems and more favorable by reps but apperently the majority of the US are moving agaisnt it
For the record, I support the use of nuclear power.
basically the american public supports the cheapest option currently natural gass
@Himarm Holy shit, the comments.
i dont look at news comments anymore
thats like going to 4chan
sometimes worse
@Himarm because we keep giving coal subsidies
15:40
most of my state is nuclear, seems safe to meee
californa was having a big fit over nuclear energy wernt they?
the rest of the country doesnt seem to care
@KutuluMike Maybe i can use it in reverse ;p
there's a higher percentage of liberals that are anti-nuclear power than conservatives.
but the difference is not really significant.
that recent poll i found said it was like 54 rep, to 34 dem
but on the other side, liberals also tend to be slighty better educated on average, and better-educated people tend to be more pro-nuclear power.
so it really depends on exactly how you ask.
but there's a heavy anti-nuke faction among, e.g. Greenpeace and similar groups, and those are very heavily liberal.
they skew the results.
having said that, plenty of conservatives are also anti-nuke, so it's just an idiotic point.
15:57
it would have been better to say the hippies block nuclear power
it is also a stance that has changed a lot.
every time there's a nuclear accident (TMI, Fukushima) there's heavy liberal backlash against building more plant.
it's been what, 5 years since the last one, so people are starting to dial back on the knee-jerk reaction.
the real question is what this all has to do with the nolanverse
that sci-fi ish nuke they made in 3
but i mean why bring it up as part of the conversation
bringing up the nuke is one thing.
bringing up the politics is another
oh. there is no point. he just likes to pick stupid fights.
he's practically the textbook definition of a troll
that's not even getting into the stupidity of the claim that nuclear power is 'dirt cheap' and 'practically limitless'
16:06
Were having a company picnic for lunch
were outside and its raining
oh joy
its not raining here yet.
wait 5 minutes, it'll change
16:22
It almost always rains when we have outdoor events at work, or it is super windy.
it can't rain all the time
tell that to the UK
Heh.
I live in a desert, it doesn't rain all the time, usually only when we schedule events outside.
I vote against a russian tag.
17:23

there is a hilarious conversation going on in meta chat
in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 21 secs ago, by Shog9
OH: I want Thaddeus to moderate the entire Internet
:-(
That would actually work awesome... as long as you knew what topics to never ever talk about :)
its like impossible to make that guy angry... 95% of the time.
based on the things that make him angry, i don't think that 95% of the time thing would hold true given responsibility over the internet
5% more like
things like 4chan or any comments on blogs or news articles would destroy that in a second
17:33
that's true.
i am mostly amused by the repeated contention that Mos Eisley should be held up as a standard for chat rooms. on SE>
is there a law like godwin for how fast/inevitably internet comments go racist?
"we used to be terribly terribly awful. we got treated like 6 year olds for a while, and now we're only a tiny bit terrible. look how awesome we are."
usually you call someone stupid, then some sex term, then racist
thats my progression at least
with a few added obesenties at each stage
We wouldn't have these problems if Mike and I were moderators. We'd have, like, a whole different set.
everyone would be dead to you for one thing
easy to moderate dead people
17:40
is it? do zombies follow directions well?
moderators have nothing to do with it.
because everyone's a moderator in chat.
did having kevin and keen and ferret and thaddeus keep mos from degenerating into a chaotic mess?
when I abandoned Mos, the general sense of the room was that I was terrified of saying things for fear that it would be flagged by someone as "over the line"
from a few persusals of their transcripts I don't get the impression it's any better.
read between 10pm-4-5 am on the weekend when stealerfans on
even in here I don't talk normally because it still feels like an SF/F chat room.
its all baseball chat code words for sex
shit I would say in a heartbeat in the screening room or bridge or SO chat I censor myself in SF/F chat.
