Interesting things happening in meta here:

A: What is a lifehack?

JaydlesI've given this a some thought lately, because while this topic presents a lot of challenges for our model, I think this could be a very useful site, if we can limit the scope enough to make it appealing to a core community and as helpful as it can be. My thinking below doesn't deviate much fro...

@Sterno "Should we close if there are no lifehack answers?" - that's pretty much what Jaydies is talking about. I agree it should be a separate question

Yeah. the comments on that are getting huge but typing up a disagreement doesn't feel like it's own answer about scope

I think he should have just made a separate meta, yes :P

This is helpful content, but I feel like it should be placed on a meta issue discussing it specifically — Zach Saucier 8 mins ago
yes

Yeah, a new meta makes sense.

I think lifehacks.stackexchange.com/q/2394/78 is low quality but I'm trying to think of why. Perhaps because it's "not a real problem"? Meaning the answer is "make sure something is in front of the sensor"?

I've seen this idea of basing questions based on the answers tossed around a few times, so a meta to get the community talking specifically about that's a good idea.

@Wipqozn there's already a meta for that meta.lifehacks.stackexchange.com/questions/1124/…
we're talking about something related but different

@ZachSaucier A close reason like that would fall under basingquestions based on the answers though.
I'm not going to pick hairs in chat about that though.
Well, anymore than I just did with that message, haha.
But I am talking about the same thing, I'm just talking about it in a broader sense.
Anyways, I agree a meta is a good idea.

6:54 PM
How much time do you give a question before you decide it's never going to get an answer?

@MattS. why does it matter? Either the question is on topic or it's not. We can't wait for answers to determine that. Same thing happens in other communities

@MattS. That's one the major problems with it.

@ZachSaucier How do you close a question saying that it will never get an answer, if it never has time to get an answer?
That's why you can't close questions based on answers.

agreed

@MattS. Yeah, I don't think anyone in this chat conversation was saying we should do that.
But Meta is the place to sort the good ideas from the bad.

6:55 PM
tis a good thing, the sunspotter question is gone

I got a red shirt hat but I look dumb in it. :(

@SabreTooth that's irrelevant. Your question is still on topic

@Sterno @ZachSaucier Either of you working on a meta for "Should we close if there are no lifehack answers?"
If not, I'll make it.
IF so, then I'll just wait until you're finished and post an answer.

@Wipqozn I'm not working on one, but the answer is no
same problem as before, can't base on topic-ness of questions on answers

@ZachSaucier I haven't been following the conversation, but you're absolutely right, in a vacuum. What specific question was under discussion?

@Shokhet Not a question, a meta answer

@Wipqozn Hadn't seen that one. I'll look at it now, thanks :)

7:05 PM
@ZachSaucier i don't think so - a science-hack is not a life-hack.... not an everyday thing at all

@Shokhet Large comment discussion sparked due to his final point:
> For a lot of questions, It will NOT be possible to evaluate whether they are on-topic without seeing the answers

@Wipqozn Jaydles said that??
that's odd

@Shokhet Yes. To be honest, I don't disagree with him that, but I just see that as a major problem this site has. Since a Lifehack is an answer, not a question, it makes it really tough to judge the on-topicness of a question without an answer.

Oh dear, he actually did say that.
@Wipqozn True.

@Shokhet Yes

7:08 PM
@Wipqozn All right :)
@Wipqozn That's kind of what we tried to do with the "what have you tried?" requirement for questions -- a need to bring up at least one conventional answer, as well as why it didn't work.
Although that requirement brought some argument with it (though I think it's workable)

@Shokhet Yeah, I know. However, as I think I've said before I don't think that's a good solution.

@Wipqozn Why not?
/ still reading Jaydles' answer

@Shokhet It requires the asker to already have a possible answer to their problem, which askers won't always have. I might have no idea at all how to solve my problem. With this "what ahve you tried? requirement I can't ask my question. That's not right. Also, people will just wind up adding made up fluff to questions so they get by the radar.

@Wipqozn I need to think about that. You raise some good points, there.
@Wipqozn One at a time: [1] if you have no idea how to solve your problem, you're not looking for a lifehack -- you're looking for a solution. We can't have that, because then we'll be the dreaded "catch-all site."
[2]

> you're not looking for a lifehack -- you're looking for a solution
That honestly doesn't make any sense to me. A Lifehack is a solution.

7:17 PM
one second

@Wipqozn no
it's an alternative

@Wipqozn [2] Maybe we need to make a requirement of "what have you realistically tried?" IOW, something that makes sense to have tried.
@J.Musser Yes; that's more or less what I would have said.

@J.Musser An alternative solution. I really don't understand. Could you expand or clarify?

If someone is asking for a solution and doesn't clarify why it must be an alternative solution, or hack, that question is ot.

Warning: This isn't such a good time for me. I may have to leave relatively soon. You'll all be in here later?

7:20 PM
@Shokhet likely, yes

@Shokhet Probably, yeah. I can make a point to poke my head in.

@J.Musser You, I already know about.

:D

Okay, let me pretend you meant to phrase it like this instead.

@Wipqozn All right. FWIW, I'm with @J.Musser on this one.

7:21 PM
> you're not looking for an alternative solution -- you're looking for a conventional solution
Does that phrasing mean the same thing to you as "you're not looking for a lifehack -- you're looking for a solution?
If so, then I understand what you mean. IF not, I still don't.

@Wipqozn That's what I meant, yes.

@Wipqozn I think that's the deal pretty much

@Shokhet Okay, gotcha.

@Wipqozn Have a hat ;-)
....you're already wearing one, though, Franklin ;-)
I have to go now -- see ya!

@Shokhet haha, yeah. This is something of a joke. I used to have a Turtle avatar, and then I changed it. People got upset, so I agreed to change my avatar to a Turtle again, and so I changed it to this. I'm a tricky one.

7:24 PM
:)
....brings back good memories

@Shokhet I'll be leaving soon myself. Toodles for now.

Enjoy your day, everyone :)

Q: What's the difference between a Lifehack and a DIY solution?

Matt S.Two questions showed up recently that asked for DIY solutions to their problem. Is there a way to fix the broken stand for an apple cinema 23" acrylic display Closed for being off-topic, though really it was just unclear (which is what I voted for). How to repair broken Dymo D1 tape roll Cl...

Last 4 new questions are on hold

@J.Musser :/

Maybe I should try and think of one

@Jon Being on-topic on another exchange does not mean that it's off-topic here. That said, I'm not sure where this question would get a better answer -- for now, the question's here; let's see what happens. I don't see anything in the current version of this question that would make it off-topic here. — Shokhet 36 secs ago

About "I'd be careful of requirements like 'creative'" -- appears that the community already understands that. — Shokhet 9 mins ago
On ""specialist product" answers" -- makes sense. Care to open a new Meta question on the topic so that this can be made clearer to everyone? — Shokhet 7 mins ago
"For a lot of questions, It will NOT be possible to evaluate whether they are on-topic without seeing the answers." -- what makes you say that? Your "two core criteria" are the definition of answers, not questions. On questions, we can judge the likelihood of having "lifehack" answers by the first of your "assorted thoughts": "There probably has to be an obvious approach" — Shokhet 23 secs ago
@Wipqozn @J.Musser You around? ....the above comments are basically my thoughts on Jaydles' answer.

I'm here

Hiya :)

@Shokhet I am now.

So I finished processing Jaydles' answer; my comments to it are printed above.

@Shokhet I don't understand what you mean by this
@Shokhet I disagree with allowing them

11:28 PM
@Shokhet His concern is because the top post in that meta contains the following
> Lifehacks are creative, meaning they use materials that are on hand for uses besides their intended use.

@Shokhet it's not very clear what you're suggesting here

@ZachSaucier He doesn't think that "creative" is a good requirement for our site; the votes on the linked Meta answer (mine) shows that the community agrees with him on that point.
@ZachSaucier Why

@Shokhet "interesting" != "creative"

@Wipqozn "creative" was a requirement for answers? I didn't realize that
@ZachSaucier IOW, I don't agree with his last point. I believe that point came about because he was using the definition of "lifehack" to judge questions -- I'm arguing that that definition is only relevant to answers. To judge the on-topicness of questions, you need to figure out if there is an "obvious approach"

I see

11:33 PM
@ZachSaucier D'you think that comment needs to be deleted and reworded? ....I see now how it's worded confusingly.

I think that one should be
and you're just plain wrong on the first one :P "interesting" != "creative"
!= means not equals if you're a programmer
sorry I use it by habit in chats

On your last point: I disagree. Your definition of "lifehack" defines answers, not questions. The criteria for deciding the on-topicness of questions should be what you wrote about in another part of your answer, that "There probably has to be an obvious approach" — Shokhet 10 secs ago
better?
@ZachSaucier I knew that
....even though I'm not a programmer

good :)

Thanks :)

@Shokhet because they're not creative, meaning they don't use materials that are on hand for uses besides their intended use

11:36 PM
@ZachSaucier Well, I'm wrong anyway on that one. I thought that part was discussing questions, not answers

to allow them is to change our definition of a lifehack drastically (for the worse, I'd argue)

@ZachSaucier That's true, but I agree with the reasoning he presented in the relevant bullet point. Should he turn that into a new question, you can take it up with him there as an answer. (or here, as a comment, whichever you prefer)

I am in the process of commening :)

@ZachSaucier But read that paragraph in full, first, though -- he has good reasons in there

The requirement of "creative" comes with the clarification of "meaning they use materials that are on hand for uses besides their intended use" to restrict answers from posting the commonly known DIY solution. Therefore it's not subjective - it either is the intended use or it's not — Zach Saucier 5 secs ago
the emphasis is on the clarification, not the word creative itself
if you can find a better word for it I'll be happy to change it

11:43 PM
Shoot, I've just been called. I gotta go; hopefully I'll be back in here later.
See you!
