12:00 AM
Same link updated content.

and someone else can post an answer creating the colander

43 mins ago, by J. Musser
@ZachSaucier Yes, I think it's a good idea to leave out personal medical questions, they may bring up answers that are poor practice/harmful, and it's better to go without these.
Shall we do that^^

@ZachSaucier I think we'd need a separate post about what we expect from answers.

Officially in the post?
@MattS. Good idea.

@MattS. that's reasonable

12:02 AM
@J.Musser mark medical questions as off topic?

@ZachSaucier It would be less confusing to find your way in for users directed to the post by comment also.
@MattS. Thought? I think that is good.

Yeah, alternative medicine is gross

Biology.se has that rule.

@MattS. the question that brought it up: lifehacks.stackexchange.com/questions/1626/…

Yeah... gross

12:03 AM
Also, no previous solution metioned

Anyway, shall we rule medical questions off-topic, for the obvious reasons?

@J.Musser what would those reasons be? (so that we can be clear)

@ZachSaucier Mostly that the answers (as hacks) are highly likely to be harmful/poor practice.

@MattS. the post looks good. I'd add some emphasis, i.e. bold to the call to action

@ZachSaucier And so we don't end up with a lot of "I have this pain. I've tried this, this, and that, but nothing happened. What can I do?"
That would be awful.
Either of you want to be a room owner?

12:07 AM
o/

@ZachSaucier As in, "me!"?

ya, it's a raised hand :)
also waving if it's a greeting

yeah, waving.

woot
I'm in chats most days

12:11 AM
@MattS. seriously, thank you for all the time you've put into this. Greatly appreciate it. The whole site will soon, too. The work you're doing is really very valuable.
@ZachSaucier I figured, it's good to have more than one owner in case something pops up when one's absent. Long as they're gonna hang around, right? :D
The highest starred post on the wall is depressing and old.

haha, ya
@J.Musser Fixed :D

@ZachSaucier :D
@ZachSaucier You can also just remove the stars if u want.

really?
Oh, true!
never knew that

@ZachSaucier yeah.

that's sick

12:20 AM
You can also pin important messages now.

ya, I'm a room owner in the web SO room
just never knew about cancel stars

@ZachSaucier ah.

always it was a "cancel" for the menu subconsciously

@ZachSaucier Why is that?

sick meaning awesome. Now I can remove the stars for crap messages in the other room

12:22 AM
@ZachSaucier yeah.

the activity on lifehacks main has died off a good bit

@ZachSaucier yup. Tomorrow's sunday too.
That's normal.

I suppose it is
so used to SO where there are always tons of new questions
though thinking back on GD it's the same

It might end up like Earth Science public beta, and get .3 q/day most of the time. :D Or was that Sustainability.se?
@ZachSaucier GD as in?

GraphicDesign.SE

12:26 AM
oh.

@J.Musser our questions per day is improving, but fluctuates

@SabreTooth yeah. At least you guuys don't have a dormant 'winter' like we do on GL.

haha

it is dropping off for the season though

2.4/day now.
I was thinking of sustainability.se, which is at .7/day now.
GL's still at 3.1/day.

12:31 AM
I wonder what GD is

@ZachSaucier 11/day

how do you find out?

Graphic Designgraphicdesign.stackexchange.com

Launched Q&A site for professional graphic designers and non-designers trying to do their own graphic design (e.g. programmers creating icons/logos for their applications)

@ZachSaucier there^

I wasn't sure if launched sites had an area 51 still...

@ZachSaucier They do.
The ones that didn't start that way don't though.
It shows the activity from the end of beta.
Actually that's not accurate then.
At all.
sorry

12:35 AM
ya, haha :)

i hope my new avatar pic shows up here soon

@SabreTooth The eye?

creepy

oh good it is showing

@MattS. @J.Musser Looking back on my answers, this one of mine does an alright job of saying what's the usual and providing a hacky alternative

12:39 AM
@ZachSaucier Why?

? why what?

Were you looking for feedback?

no
just thinking about what we talked about earlier dealing with answer requirements/recommendations

eye am watching you....he he he

@ZachSaucier Ok. Yeah, that answer meets the requirements.
@ZachSaucier Over the last 30 days, they got 10.066666666667 q/day.

12:48 AM
Hey @J.Musser you should change your screen name to "I am Groot" - just watched Guardians of the Galaxy

@SabreTooth Never watched.
Is it good?

hilariously awesome

"I am Groot"?

Groot is a humanoid tree
and that is all he says

haha!

12:50 AM
great movie though

@SabreTooth Does he calculate q/day on graduated sites?

nah, never came up in the movie

Then I can't be him.

another Groot?!
lol

The pastebin is updated with the latest I have.
I'll add in the no medical advice and formatting later I still have other things to do yet.

12:54 AM
@MattS. ok cool.

If you guys are dying to have it posted soon you're free to take it and post it yourselves.

@MattS. I think it can be finished first.
Unless we keep coming up with nw things.
The new questions have been good, everyone saw the comments. So it's not like an emergency.
I'd rather not have to significantly alter it once posted.
Of course, if it becomes necessary, we will.
Monologue... sorry :)
From that post: Because a lifehack is an alternative solution to a problem, it is necessary for us to know exactly what solution the person asking the question was looking to use in order to solve the problem, and the reason why they couldn't use that method. If the question can't share a solution that they are looking for an alternative to then that question is off-topic on this site. I'm quite clearly looking for an alternative to using a corkscrew. [contd.] — starsplusplus 4 mins ago
^^ What's the best way to guide this user in the right direction?
Never mind.
He has a point.
@MattS. What do you think about this:
[contd.] Nowhere in that post does it suggest that the "solution you are looking for an alternative to" has to be something you've tried, just that you have to explain what is wrong with the "normal" solution. That includes "I tried it and it didn't work", but also "I don't own the right equipment", "my X is broken", "it has a side effect I don't want", and so on. If you want to exclude all these other reasons and only allow "I tried it and it didn't work" you should make that much, much clearer in your draft post. Because that's not currently what it says at all. — starsplusplus 2 mins ago
^^ It's a valid point.
It doesn't specifically say that you have to actually try something.

1:13 AM
one thing to be careful about (and this is from outside experience), if you spend too much time refining the rules, then the changes will probably turn more members off - nothing will be ever perfect

@SabreTooth I don't think we're spending too much time.

not saying you were, but ust something to consider as you develop these guidelines

@SabreTooth Turning off members isn't what I'm afraid of.

Hi @J.Musser :)

@Shokhet Hiya!
> Because a lifehack is an alternative solution to a problem, it is necessary for us to know exactly what solution the person asking the question was looking to use in order to solve the problem, and the reason why they couldn't use that method.
Should be changed to:

1:21 AM
Just to be clear: I really appreciate what you're doing for the site, and I'm absolutely on board that it's necessary.....I'm just not sure why this specific instance is a problem with "what have you tried?"

> Because a lifehack is an alternative solution to a problem, it is necessary for us to know exactly what solution the person asking the question has tried in order to solve the problem, and the reason(s) why they weren't satisfied with the use of that method.
or similar @MattS.

(this specific instance = lifehacks.stackexchange.com/q/60/59; for those who haven't been following our discussion)
@J.Musser I don't see the difference between the two

@Shokhet looking to use, versus actually tried.
I think that needs to be more clear.

@J.Musser Got it.
@J.Musser You're the owner of the Junk Drawer now?

9 hours ago, by Feeds
J. Musser has been automatically appointed as owner of this room. (What does this mean?)
I was automatically appointed by the site.
I added Zach as well.
If you intend to stick around the site for a long time, You could be one as well.

1:30 AM
all hail, the Junk Drawer overlords!

@Shokhet Mostly by how it's worded - it sounds more like, 'these are the parameters, how can I work around them?' than 'I've tried these things, and they aren't working for this reason.'
If that makes sense.

@J.Musser I saw that starred :)
@J.Musser I probably wouldn't want it.....I'd have to skip one day every week, as it is ;-)

@Shokhet Ok.

@J.Musser Okay. So if you think that changing the wording is important, I'll get right to it :)

@Shokhet I think that will make it more clearly on-topic, especially as a great example question for the site (which it is).
Thanks!

1:36 AM
@J.Musser Yes, people have used it as an example of on-topicness....although I'm not sure how much of that was the question, and how much of that was the answer.....

@Shokhet Very cool answer - and it was entirely on-topic.

I'm here by the way

Many questions were.

ping me if you need me

Hi @ZachSaucier! Congrats on room ownership :)

1:38 AM
lol, thanks?
@Shokhet how do you like our new scope?

If you're not careful, @Zach, you'll get nominated for moderator.....
@ZachSaucier Looks good.

:O
so long as a mod doesn't have to know anything about lifehacks I might possibly consider it, lol

@ZachSaucier I kinda thought that's how it always should be, so (to me) it's not all that new.....it's definitely a huge step to make that clear to everyone, so we're all on the same page

it was for us as well, just not exactly
and definitely not as clear

I mean, people have drawn comparisons to Skeptics.....their scope is basically everything, so long as you follow their rules for asking (AFAICT; I don't have an account there) ......if we can do the same thing here we have a shot at getting out of PB, methinks

I gotta go now, be back later!

@Shokhet cya!

2:01 AM
question on who are moderators came up again

@ZachSaucier linky?

@ZachSaucier answered
Oh, you too
You're faster than me.
:D

You looked up the actual details

What do you think of the newest question (about mousepads)?
Seems odd that paper folders make good mousepads, and plain paper gives too much friction.

2:12 AM
Topic wise I didn't see any problems when I looked

Yeah, it fits in our scope.
I will dv the answer.
And the question.
Paper works great.
edited and removed dv. More clear now.

2:28 AM
Sorry for not being clear.

@Quincunx Where?

Q: Who are the Moderators

iliveunderawesomerockThis proposal has a large amount of users, but none of them have over all of the Privileges if I am not mistaken. So this leads me to ask "Who are the Moderators? And how are they moderating? When I click the moderation tab, nothing appears. This is not my first beta, but I was not able to be t...

On my question
I don't understand why, but I can't upload photos using the tool in the answer. I want to upload a photo of the best folder I've ever used, and point out what's different.
Maybe I'll just have to create a random blog or something and try uploading there.

@Quincunx Link it here? Maybe I can add it.

@Quincunx use imgur

2:30 AM
Yeah, I'll need to upload it first. Hmm. Maybe the picture could be better.

@Quincunx It's better now with the edit.

@ZachSaucier Unfortunately, I decided to get a web protection software for myself, and I don't have the password, someone else does. It blocks imgur
Hmm. That actually might be why I can't upload

@Quincunx I can upload it for you. All I need is the link.

@J.Musser Yes, I understand. The only problem is that for you to have a link, I need to have uploaded online already. I understand how StackExchange works; at that point I might as well just use a link to where I uploaded it rather than have imgur upload it.
And I'm going to take a better picture first anyways, since I realized that my first is too zoomed out to see the benefit.

@Quincunx Right click the image, click 'open in new tab', copy the url, post it here, and I can add it in.

2:35 AM
@J.Musser I understand how the internet works. This picture is my own picture
And you went the hard way. Just right click the image, and click on 'copy image URL'.

@Quincunx Or you can use: <img src="" height="" />. That works on SE.

@J.Musser I am aware.

good.

Like I said, the image needs to be on the web for that to work. Right now the image is on my computer
In case you haven't realized, I have spent quite some time on SE

Oh! ok.

2:36 AM
And have quite a bit of rep on some (well, one) site

@Quincunx Code golf?
I see.

Yep

I'm active on Gardening.se, just went over 20k there.

Nice. I got much less active on code golf because I've been preoccupied with school. And I also keep giving bounties so my rep keeps dropping.

Why not upload the image somewhere else, and let someone add it to your post?

2:39 AM
Yes, I will do that. I'm just lazy right now and am delaying doing that. Actually, doing things on this site is me being lazy and putting off studying for finals...

@Quincunx I keep going to work, but my site's a very slow beta, so I can't be very active anyway...
@Quincunx lol :p

:)

We're finally getting somewhere with this site.

I guess the thing about code golf is that it takes time to answer questions. On some sites, you can simply write whatever comes to your mind, but with code golf, you actually have to solve the problems and (in the case of ) golf your code before posting it. So answering takes quite a bit more effort.

Did you see the meta post we're working on yet, @Quincunx?

2:42 AM
Not yet

If you want to, I can give you the link (which is on the star wall)

Is it the who are the moderators?
Or perhaps the one meta meta post which has been starred in this chatroom?

@Quincunx The pastebin link. It hasn't been posted yet.
It's under construction.

Oh okay

read through it, and post any thoughts

2:46 AM
Okay wow. You seem to trust me really fast. I'm a little surprised.

@Quincunx Anyone may see it.
We want input.
Matt S. did the writing.
It's the result of all the extended discussions we have been having in this room. Some of the proposed changes we want to add have been starred on the wall.

Okay. One thing I'm tempted to comment on is the English. I feel like some stuff can be phrased better

@Quincunx Yes.

"meaning psychological questions will still be off-topic, but also questions in other areas such as mathematics and programming." sounds weird. The but doesn't fit quite right. Perhaps the ", but" should just be " and"

It's a rough draft right now. Phrasing changes are good input.
1 hour ago, by J. Musser
> Because a lifehack is an alternative solution to a problem, it is necessary for us to know exactly what solution the person asking the question has tried in order to solve the problem, and the reason(s) why they weren't satisfied with the use of that method.
There's another one^

2:51 AM
Ah. That's what that was. Okay

@Quincunx You mean all the comments I left?
They're actually being effective.

All the comments? Or the comments you posted on my post? Or what?

> Thanks for your contributions! Please describe what you've tried so far, and why that wasn't satisfactorily successful. Questions that lack this basic information will shortly be ruled off-topic, and closed. If possible, update your question before that happens. Thanks!
@Quincunx I posted dozens of that ^^ over the site.
All the questions where it applied.

Oh. I haven't read closely at many questions, but I read a bunch on meta and also the highest voted questions to see what questions should be like. I did discover basically the exact content of your comment there.
I can't think of anything to add to the scope.

@Quincunx With the new meta post (currently a paste) implemented, we will have to close all the questions that do not comply.

2:55 AM
Is that bad?

I think we should add that all medical questions are off-topic.
@Quincunx Not bad, but it was my reason for mass-posting that comment. That way we hopefully won't be closing most of the questions on the site.

Tried so far: for my example something as easy as using the mouse on the bare table.
Is there any reason you need to keep going @Quincunx? Why not just post the chat message?
I don't know why, but I dislike the pink number bubble when I'm active in chat.
Unless it's being used to refer to a specific message

@Quincunx I click the 'reply' button, which leaves a little arrow on the front of my post. That arrow shows which of your messages I'm replying to.

Yeah. I know about that. I just find it weird that you do that even when it's not necessary to.

It's a habit.
It helps when folks are reading through the transcript.

3:00 AM
Okay that makes sense.

I can stop if you want.

Just do whatever you want.

:D

?

I want to eat cake.

3:01 AM
:-) Then eat cake!

I have no cake and it's late at night.
I can't do whatever I want.

Eat ice cream then.

Ice cream's good.
I want a billion dollars now.

Then do it!
Get yourself a billion dollars

anyway, sorry. /me is goofing off
back to buisness...

3:03 AM
@J.Musser That makes sense. For things like cuts, I can think of answers like "use tissue paper pressed against the cut to stem bleeding". But that doesn't seem like a good lifehack

Also, it's liable to bring up harmful/poor practice answers.

Yes

My first thought:
4 hours ago, by J. Musser
@ZachSaucier Yes, I think it's a good idea to leave out personal medical questions, they may bring up answers that are poor practice/harmful, and it's better to go without these.

That was among my first thoughts. I just forgot to mention that in my message.

We need to come up with good reasons in order to add it to the meta post.

3:08 AM
I don't think the scope post mentions anything about non-physical problems with physical solutions.
Some non-tangible problems obviously can be solved with physical solutions, but this doesn't seem like it should be on-topic
I can image people posting 'study tips' questions or something.
I guess this might fit into the "... make one's physical life more efficient"

@Quincunx example?
As it looks so far^^
easier to read than pastebin.

@J.Musser Uh I thought of a few then promptly forgot them

@Quincunx Are they on-site, or theoretical?

Theoretical
@J.Musser I actually find the pastebin easier to read...

Ok, still important though.

3:13 AM
@Quincunx mainly because I like selecting text and doing similar funky stuff when I read.
Hmm. The scope does say that the problems should be physical...

@Quincunx So you can't think of an example?

No. I forgot them and I don't want to go thinking again because I need to start studying again...

@Quincunx Okay.
:19054590 sorry, misclick.
I was writing reply.

Oh! You can reply from the right.
I always use the dropdown menu...

@Quincunx The dropdown menu's on the left...
It takes too long.

3:18 AM
Yes.
Yes

I don't use it.

@Quincunx But the dropdown menu is the only way I know to reply to my own post

@Quincunx I rarely do that.

@Quincunx <-- maybe I do things like this too much...
Okay. Anyways, I should get studying.

@Quincunx Thanks for your thoughts.

3:21 AM
Not sure I gave many thoughts, but okay. Bye.

@MattS. I've changed a couple things. See pastebin.com/XchX54mk. If you can add those to your post, or with better wording, that'd be great.
We should think of a lasting title for the post. Something containing 'new' isn't lasting.
How it would look: i.stack.imgur.com/UpDiN.png
Most notably: added a section about medical questions, and clarified the section about 'what have you tried', also a small readability edit on the part about psychological questions.

3:58 AM
... They tried to be cool, but "1337" isn't "1137".

@J.Musser Or edit the question after the site stabilizes, to change it from a 'change to how things are going' to 'the authoritative post by which the scope of the site is judged', which it would be in the first case, but after the site stablizes, some of the 'change' aspects of the post can be removed.

@J.Musser Do you think that
is an improvement?
.....I'm outta onions.

hmm, but that isn't a solution.
The problem here is that you haven't tried a solution and had an issue with it.

What have you tried (in vain) in the past? .....I could write in the same impersonal tone "people have tried" .....would that work?

Q: What happened to all of these questions?

Khan PowerSo during the definition phase of Lifehacks.SE there was a place where people posted example questions: http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/64409?phase=definition Are these going to be asked sometime? I know many aren't, and I was wondering if it was okay to ask some of these questions mys...

4:09 AM
@MacGyver @J.Musser Do we have a linkable, already posted (on Meta) policy regarding our newest iteration of policy? ....I just wrote an answer to this question, but would like to add the caveat of putting in solutions already tried.
Example questions are missing that.

@Shokhet sorry, was writing.
I put up a 'temporary' answer explaining where we are and the best route of action.

@J.Musser that's alright...I posted the answer I would have anyway, making vague references to "policy," without links. Those might be edited in later.

@Shokhet I see.
nice

.....and clarified that it hasn't been posted as policy yet, but hopefully will be soon.

4:30 AM
@iliveunderawesomerock Congrats on 1k! Great job providing detail in your answers. Seems you are an expert‌. :-)

4:46 AM
@J.Musser Thank You! I am not trying to get rep though :? I am just trying to give detailed answers, because other users seem to not care about showing how this site gives good answers. Rep means nothing if the site fails. Awesome work in the meta BTW, you might become a mod if this site doesn't fail :)

@iliveunderawesomerock Ha, yeah. do a good job, and rep comes in on it's own. No rep-whoring necessary. Thanks for the encouragement, I like this site, and helping out in meta is one of the ways I think I can keep it alive.

@J.Musser I'm not much help in Meta but I will ask a question about answer quality and who is destroying this site, because I think they are important questions.

@iliveunderawesomerock 'who is destroying the site'?

@iliveunderawesomerock I don't think you need necessarily mention names, though -- I think identifying problematic user behavior is much more useful

@Shokhet If you mean odd behaviors by former Kevin Johnsrude, he is in the process of deleting his account, after a meta rant in which he described how bad I was. :)

4:53 AM
@J.Musser People with bad answers, I think the question problem is being solved. But the answer quality is very bad, there is no research and it is disgusting seeing 2 sentence answers.

@iliveunderawesomerock We will work on a post about answers once the question post is finished. Which, btw, did you read through that yet?

@J.Musser I don't count that as a success -- I think some straight communication would have solved the problem. He gave useful answers, and was polite when people were polite to him......I'm not saying that you were rude, necessarily, but that people are often more terse than need be.

@Shokhet I would never mention names. I would simply talk about the behaviour and how to solve it. And maybe some of the destroyers can join in the discussion.
@J.Musser I read it and the post seems pretty good. I did star it, I like how people are taking charge this beta needs leadership.

@iliveunderawesomerock pastebin.com/XchX54mk is the latest version.
@iliveunderawesomerock Yes it does.

@J.Musser I read the post.....I think it's good, but I don't like the opening sentence all that much. ....perhaps "struggling" is a better word.

4:58 AM
@J.Musser Awesome post, truly. I may remember some criticism later, but here are 2 things are thought about it immediately.

@Shokhet It was not a success. If I could have thought of a way to resolve it I would have. He thought I was only blanketing his posts with my auto comment.
@Shokhet good to note.

@J.Musser I figured that when I saw the title of his (now deleted) Meta post somewhere in chat.

@J.Musser The post had some grammar needs. I saw how some things were not capitalized, but that is not important.

@iliveunderawesomerock Anything major?
