Q: Can we build mathematics without studying it?

SiddhantinfThis is one question that I can never get the answer of, because I am too young at this moment. My question is that can a common person like me, not a genius, just a normal person, build mathematics on my own? I mean to say that if I don't refer to any books or resources, can I prove some results...

When I saw that question, it reminded me that I have heard or read somewhere that some mathematician re-invented differential and integral calculus on his own as a kid. He had his own symbols for derivatives and integrals, but he was able to get at least some basic results. Anybody heard the same story? Do you remember the name? (I think he was Russian.)
