Hey there, I was wondering if this site would be fine with me asking a question about the repercussions of a certain feature in a game? E.g. I find it interesting to have features like in-game-radio; voice-chat as an actual part of a game that can be influenced in-game with means such as signal jammers or equipment to listen into frequencies
But how many people would actually probably enjoy such a thing, and how many are, excuse my language, too dumb to understand that this is not normal voicechat?

depends on the game
If it's a game like Arma 3 and you hear mic static, you're gonna assume it might be a game element
If it's COD then you assume a fault

@dot_Sp0T That might be OK. Key points: give us your context, and ask a question that can have a single best answer -- definitely don't poll us for our personal feelings on the matter. I recommend asking for evidence, citations, etc, such as similar games that added or removed it. (There may not be any, though.) Overall though: why not playtest it and find out?

Q: Extract Models Textures From Halo 5 Forge

masterj2001So I installed Halo 5 Forge PC the other day in hopes of being able to extract models and textures from the game so that I'd be able to use them in Blender. However, after installing model and texture ripping software I was presented with this error from Windows: So I'm not exactly siure how I ...

probably better for gaming.se
gamedev se is more about creating games rather than ripping textures from existing games

Seems like it's fit for SO as well.

Would we even facilitate that request as a legal matter?
Or would it be OK?
could be OK, now that I think about it that kind of stuff would be useful for cosplay, etc. i don't imagine that has a legit purpose inside the role of developing games, though.

10:35 AM
I need to flag it for migration somewhere and I'm torn between Arqade and here.

Arqade.

Off-topic? :(

Texture & model ripping is a thing game fans will be enthusiastic helping with, game developers less so. They will have a better chance of being well received on arqade.
hrm wait
there's also a modding community, is that topical for here or arqade..?
... It could be relevant to here under .... this is a tough one

I don't think modding is OK with arqade last time I checked

10:52 AM
I talked with Arqade people and they said it's OK.

Does anyone else feel euphoria when they drink coffee

Cool then! Maybe that's not modding per-se ;)
@ShaunWild Not me!

I get a really strong buzz
Drives me through the day haha

I have quit drinking caffeinated coffee and tea 10 months ago; I could say it helped with the stress but it did not :P

I only get a buzz sometimes from caffeine, not very consistent for me :(

11:07 AM
@ShaunWild I don't. Sounds like some pretty good coffee.
What variety do you have? How do you prepare it?

And at what frequency do you drink coffee?

Maybe like thrice a day
sometimes 4 cups
I get it from my local Greggs in the morning and just drink regular coffee in work
Just instant coffee

oh huh. i dunno then.
i was wondering if you got something super syrupy or flavored or prepared with butter cubes, since the energy rush would feel pretty impressive.

butter cubes?

11:17 AM
The only time I've heard something about that was about that guy who spent like 30 days alone in the Antarctic... :P

Butter in the coffee. Picture it in cubes though, like sugar cubes, so that people could measure it out in cubes.

Geez, people do that?

Yeah. It's supposed to impart a good energy kick in the coffee that helps with waking up. At least that's how it's been described to me. Could just be BroScience™ or an urban legend.

Said like that it sounds super un-healthy, but I bet it compares to the sugar and fat they put in your Iced Cappuccino at your local Tim Hortons or the equivalent at starbucks...

fat is fine
carbs are the devil

11:22 AM
I guess it depends on how much fat you ingest, and the type of fat too.

about 25ml of butter (a bit more than a 3cm or 1.25 inch cube) is about 160 kcal, which is about the same as you get out of eating a whole croissant. I have little porridge cups for breakfast and those are ~250kcal.
For reference, daily intake would be 1800-2000kcal

Like a lot of things, you have to budget :P Budget money, budget time, budget calories; if a cube of butter is what makes your day, why not!

@ChrisMcFarland Can confirm, currently down nearly 3 stone from cutting carbs

wtf
my feed disabler seems to be broken

What's a feed disabler#

user92578
it's a script that I have that's supposed to disable the feed popup

Ah well
It's hardly intrusive hehe
I have a portrait monitor so I never notice it :P

user92578
ah, looks like chat has gone https

Q: Is this question about Maya modeling off-topic?

CharanorI recently voted to close this question about modeling in Maya. I believe this question to be off-topic and my reasoning is this: It has nothing to do with game development. While it's true that you can use Maya in game development that does not mean that this question is on-topic here. This que...

Q: Network-wide HTTPS: It's time

Nick CraverUpdate 2017-05-22 stackoverflow.com is now https://. I've written up a lot of what it took to get here in a blog post. Next up is chat and then https-only cookies. We'll be ramping up HSTS max-age directives as we go. I'll continue to update this post as we deploy new bits. Update 2017-03-16 ...

user92578
A little odd, there chat isn't marked as done.

Chat isn't forced-https yet
i have been using http(non-s) chat because i didn't realise i could use https

user92578
I'm pretty sure I was just automatically redirected here

Oh man I stumbled on the paranormal SE area 51 proposal again
that's some ridiculousness right there

12:11 PM
that's a thing, yeah.

user92578
I feel like the religion ones are all ready a little stretch, but I guess those do kinda serve a purpose for the society or whatever

user92578
My favorite is the Flying Spaghetti Monster proposal

@Tyyppi_77 Well apparently, at least for christianity.stackexchange.com, it all seems to be reference to Christianity related books, or stuff like that, so there seems to be a "rational" part to the question...

user92578
"Does God control “demons”?"

user92578
Sure, there can be some "objective" questions/answers on those sites, like I'd imagine something like "Can I cook this food X to my guests?"

user92578
12:17 PM
awwwwww

user92578
the spaghetti monster one was closed

Yup, I guess not enough people were interested...

Q: LibGDX: Colllisions between bullets and enemies in arrays

James StoddernI am writing a "Gauntlet" style game. So far I have managed to successfully detect collisions between my player object and my ghost enemy objects, and when they collide they drain the player's energy. The Ghosts are stored in an ArrayList. I now have bullets which the player can fire, these are...

is this question moving the goalposts..?
they have an UPDATE: paragraph at the end which says "I guess the question now is [thing]", and I can't tell if that should be a new question or is genuinely a refinement of this one.

While certainly related, I would put it in the "new question" category

12:32 PM
new question
Should be edited out I guess...

Ok, I removed it. It's 2 years old, but mostly out of a process of ensuring it sets a good example of how questions should get asked.

Yeah; the guy was last seen in last September; maybe he'll get the notification and accept the answer :P

I've also been editing statements of "any help would be appreciated", "any thoughts", "i hope this solves your problem", etc to take chips out of the noise and improve the signal:noise ratio

I generally leave them there because it 'gives colour' to the site and let show the human nature of the poster. But I remove the signatures.

That's true, though I see those phrases extremely pervasively on programming issues.

12:45 PM
I don't mind them hehe, but there does not seem to be a rule about that specifically, at least not here.

ah, the good old code as images: gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/142133/…

DH.
Not to mention the lack of description of the question

Lol why not make stuff complicated when you can make it simple? :P

DH.
"Why it doesn't work?" vomits spaghetti code on post

user92578
so this is just me

user92578
but he's not actually setting the AudioSources to anything, right?

user92578
4:26 PM
Also I'm really annoying by the meta URL change

user92578
If I want to go on the main site, I type in "ga" and I get the suggestion

user92578
If I wanted to go to meta, I typed "me" and got the suggestion for meta

user92578
Now it'll require "gamedev.m"

@Tyyppi_77 It's because you're not addict enough. Both of the tabs are pinned, here, so I never have to type the addresses :P
@Tyyppi_77 Looks like it.

user4704
Yeah.

user4704
4:33 PM
I think he expected setting the audio clips via the inspector to automatically initialize the similarly-named sources?

user4704
shrug

user4704
Oh

user4704
Maybe he expects setClipForSrc to be doing it

user4704
"ref" works in Unity right?

user4704
4:49 PM
I'm just going to assume yes and put that in my answer.

Internet seems to say it works.
But I haven't used Unity/c# to tell.

user4704
5:04 PM
Whatever, I have nearly 80k reputation, I can't possibly be wrong!

user4704
:P

:D

@JoshPetrie good move!
