Article about Riot's artistic process: na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/champions-skins/…
Specifically how they differentiate 3 different robot-like visual sets.
hahah: "ղօ ղ⊘⊘ҍʂ ąӀӀօաҽժ"

SO logo contest
I like the C64 one, though it's not really mass market.
I think they may have picked the best one in there. I see a few others that are decent
18:49
people are idiots. "Uninstal Java 8, Install Java 7 to run Code Collaborator"
$ java -version
java version "1.8.0_51"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_51-b16)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 25.51-b03, mixed mode)
I assume 1.8 means version 8, but that's dumb.
Jon
Jon
@Pip yah, EVGA are good for video cards.. apparently have a lifetime warrantee
lifetime warranty?
Jon
Jon
Although i haven't confirmed this, I have a friend that swears by them
That is what he said
Hard to believe
Also, EVGA motherboard, FART SOUND
hello hello
Jon
Jon
ASUS has been in the motherboard game forever now -- their BIOS cannot be beat
they have been cheaping out on their lower end mobos lately though
but still good
18:52
can they tell if you burn the card out mining cryptocurrencies with it?
4
Jon
Jon
(in terms of pcb thickness)
LOL, I don't know.. let me check on tha tlifetime warrantee
I've been told it's now a very bad idea to buy used GPUs because they might have been thrashed mining
Jon
Jon
depends on the card
Must be registered
Must be original owner also
looks like it would be covered if it burned out through excessive use
Jon
Jon
Yeah, seemingly
typically, the fan goes out first
I imagine they can tell if you OC it
which probably voids the warantee
18:55
yeah, but no need to OC it to mine :)
ROKIT LEEG strategy
You'll find that interesting, Jon
Jon
Jon
watch this while I watch that
saw that earlier today! AWESOME
Jon
Jon
lol
pathetic is a better word for it
wow
what a save
Jon
Jon
yeah, i use a lot of those strategies already
i typically stay back a bit
18:59
i found one other person who thinks exactly as i do
we typically do well in 2v2 because we both cycle round
Jon
Jon
ball chasing was my original strategy
mine too
think thats how everyone starts
as you get points for interacting with the ball, so more interaction = better right?
19:16

19:36
Sup Rhys
not much pip, planning on getting a square i can move around this evening, thats my goal
Pip
Pip
sounds good
Feels weird to see the Blue Nametags in here again :P
how come?
Jon
Jon
you are part of the 1%
go f yourself @RhysW
:P
Pip
Pip
Just does. You're one of the very few that do game dev stuff :P
19:39
@Jon :D I feel special
@MickLH yep that would be very good alternative.
Pip
Pip
You're one of the like... 3 non-GDSE mods I've ever seen in here for something that's not a flag.
:D
So top 0.0001% more like
Jon
Jon
when stuff gets flagged, this channel goes to hell, lol
they don't know how we roll in here
Pip
Pip
Okay... maybe there aren't that many mods. But still
@Jon completely correct. This is a way more chill chat room than many
yeah, its kinda nice
19:41
I don't know why the hell do I get the flag messages?
coding sometimes just makes you want to yell expletives to whoever will listen
Pip
Pip
Absolutely
Jon
Jon
agreed, lol
I mean I don't have that much high reputation, and I've never been a mod in any channel ever
Pip
Pip
Huh, idk
Oh yeah you do
6.6k rep is more than enough
19:43
Every time I see another mod in here, I get just a bit scared that somethings happened. Luckily, it's been pretty chill
Pip
Pip
mhm
hjahhaha
:)
Pip
Pip
I honestly think the only blue I've seen in here is Rhys, Noc, and... Josh?
there was another
Pip
Pip
hmmm who else
19:44
with some pixelly looking jelly bean thing as his avatar
the one I accidentally insulted
@Almo umm, story time?
Fredly
yup Fredly
Pip
Pip
oh yeah him
19:45
couldn't remmeber the name
But still others, pop up.
Pip
Pip
It was a Minecraft porkchop IIRC
oh yeah
hes from arquade isnt he?
Pip
Pip
I think so
19:47
I'll run for gdse mod again next time there are elections
Jon
Jon
All hail our new overlord @Almo

I don't think i've ever been in this chat room and not seen Almo
hahaha
@Noctrine you're missing an e, it's fredley =p
Pip
Pip
All hail!
3 mins ago, by Noctrine
Fredly
19:47
@RhysW and, yes he's an arqade mod =p
I started coming here in... whenever I was working for Spearhead. needed Unreal help
Pip
Pip
Mispelled :P
@KevinvanderVelden thought so! Haven't been there in ages
Pip
Pip
@Almo Add me on the launcher? :P
I remember finding ShotgunNinja and ToddersLegrande at the time
Pip
Pip
19:48
I wonder where Spartan went, speaking of
Todders! Where is he now?
Jon
Jon
Largo Legrande
He left after a fight with Icy
oh
Pip
Pip
oh really. Remember what they were going on about?
19:49
real bummer, but he says he's happier not worrying about what's going on in the channel
@Almo yep there was... but I can't remember the name either
(I still play LoL with him)
@Almo there is at least a positive then
yup
Pip
Pip
Well. Tell him I say hello next time you see him then
19:50
wondering if any of you guys is super good with mysql?
@KevinvanderVelden I never spell it correctly :|
Pip
Pip
I have done a little, not a ton though @Ali.S
I'm ok with mysql
:O Is that what happened? I missed that.
depending on the complexity I may be able to help
if not, I know where to go to get help fast
19:50
@Ali.S My dayjob includes mssql, so if it's just SQL you need help with =p
I'm wondering how can I run an 'insert' statement, within 'select' query? to put some data into a temporary table?
hmm that's beyond me
@Ali.S insert into $table ( $columns ) select $columns from bla
Jon
Jon
insert then select
sql is like yoda
At least, I think that's sql and not specifically MSSQL
Jon
Jon
19:51
mysql might not support this
You can do subqueries with mysql
im fairly sure it supports that
mysql experts can be found at the devshed forums
rudy937 wrote a book on it
Or just try the syntax that should work? =p
19:52
have to deal with mysql every day unfortunately for me
Insert within a select, like you want to select something and insert data into what was returned from the select?
this is what I've got right now:
create temporary table tries(device_id int not null unique, cnt int not null);
SELECT version, (
CASE WHEN known_ids.device_name IS NULL
THEN source.device_id
ELSE known_ids.device_name
END
) AS device, TIME, submission, country, level, try, hint, moves
FROM (

SELECT @submission := (
CASE @device
WHEN device_id
THEN @submission +1
ELSE 1
END ) AS submission,
BEGIN
INSERT INTO tries( level_id, cnt )
VALUES (
play_logs.level_id, 1
) ON DUPLICATE
KEY UPDATE cnt = cnt +1;
@Noctrine I have the advantage of being an arqade (site and chat) regular so =p
Or you want to select, and then write something as a notification that you've selected?
just going to post this superchill thing again because it deserves to be heard. Preferably with great headphones, or a subwoofer. (there's a deep bass rumble that gives it teeth)
19:53
@KevinvanderVelden I want the opposite.. it's a select query which has another select query inside it
selects can definitely have selects in them
@Ali.S oh, I don't think that's possible
though usually you can express it better as a join, rather than selects in selects
You want to select the results of a select?
and it that nested select, I want to do an insert!
19:54
So you want to select from something that you've selected
and insert to know that you've selected?
Joe
Joe
sounds like you want a script... not a super query?
Yep.
let me start from the begining... this is the query I had in the first place:
SELECT version,
        (case when known_ids.device_name is null then source.device_id else known_ids.device_name end) as device,
        time, submission, country, level, try, hint, moves
FROM (
        SELECT @submission := (
                CASE @device
                WHEN device_id THEN @submission + 1
                ELSE 1
                END ) AS submission,
                @try := (
                CASE @level
                WHEN level_id THEN @try + 1
                ELSE 1
                END ) AS try, version, @device := device_id AS device_id, TIME, country, @level := level_id
Alternatively, you want a DBA to assault you later.
but as you might notice it computes "submssion" field in a wrong manner
since submissions should be ordered by "time" but to compute "tries" you need to order rows by "level_id"
19:56
I don't think I have any nested selects in LowDown. Just looking through the files
$query = "SELECT lcc.contestid, lcc.duration, lcc.num_entries, lcc.winning_number, lcc.deadline, lcc.winner_userid,
                       lu.display_name
                FROM ld_completed_contests lcc
                INNER JOIN ld_entries le ON le.userid = $userid AND lcc.contestid = le.contestid
                INNER JOIN ld_users lu ON lu.userid = lcc.winner_userid\n";
Joe
Joe
so to my point, "Does this really HAVE to be query language?" is that the point of what you are trying to do? or is it just to accomplish something whatever means necessary?
that's about as complex as my queries get
oh wait there's more
$query = "SELECT lcc.contestid, lcc.duration, lcc.num_entries, lcc.winning_number, lcc.deadline, lcc.winner_userid,
                       lu.display_name
                FROM ld_completed_contests lcc
                INNER JOIN ld_entries le ON le.userid = $userid AND lcc.contestid = le.contestid
                INNER JOIN ld_users lu ON lu.userid = lcc.winner_userid\n";
if($type == "1")
{
    $query .= "WHERE lcc.duration = 1\n";
}
else if($type == "24")
{
    $query .= "WHERE lcc.duration = 24\n";
@Joe well I'm mostly exploring right now...
checking what the possibilities are
Joe
Joe
so you can probably get this to work... but what your building is a nightmare
performance wise / reliability / readability
it might be a nightmare for readability but certainly not performance-wise
actually I only wanted to add 3 lines to the code, which sadly is not working
Joe
Joe
19:59
iirc subqueries are some of the least efficient things you can do with mysql
one to create a temporary table, one to erase it's contents when the user changes, and one to update number of tries
@Joe that's not always right... it really depends on how you use them actually
for an example, once I managed to reduce the time a procedure required to be done in php by doing the whole thing in query language
adding two sub queries
the result was an improvement from 120s down to 0.2s
Joe
Joe
apples to oranges i think man
just because sql server can run faster then your apache doesnt mean its performing well
increase the records on those tables and your going to be pulling your hairs out
nested selects, multiple joins order by all things thats are rigorous for sql to do in my experience
you have a few things going for you, your not selecting *
EXPLAIN [THE MONSTER QUERY HERE];
drop an explain in front of that
right now, my code runs more like two consecutive selects, with different orders
Joe
Joe
and its just easier to get all your data once then format it with logic or?
logic as in php?
20:04
git really seems excessively complex. git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Git-Tools-Reset-Demystified
Joe
Joe
yes
Pip
Pip
git is nice
not really
right now, explain give 5 rows.
2 of them have 2500 row content each, and the rest only less than 10 values
doing that in php would certainly cost me more
and will use higher inter-process bandwidth
Joe
Joe
so if your staying that small by all means
20:06
I'm pretty sure I won't have that much problem till ~100k rows
but more than that I don't know what's going to happen
Joe
Joe
at work im at 1.4 billion records, we cant do any of that haha
that feels more like... you can't do anything
hahah
@Joe we also have some databases with millions of records and can't do that... We still do though
@Joe wow, we hit a few million recently and that was tough enough to start managing
20:08
@Almo clients do a lot to humanize it.
@Joe but seriously how would you copy 1.4billion records to the php to sort/post process them?
Joe
Joe
not possible
were talking ~thousands of terabytes on disk
in text
@Ali.S You don't necessarily have to use apache for it. You can write bash scripts also.
@Noctrine is it really that much faster?
@Noctrine when talking about a billion records. Don't use anything interpreted
Get some goddamn compiled code
20:09
Is Ali going through a billion records?
Joe
Joe
2500 :D
Then Bash'll be ok :p
@Noctrine Oh wait, I thought we were talking about joe's thing =p
@Joe for now.. it's expanding
@Noctrine I prefer doing things with SQL
no php, no bash script, just pure SQL
Not having to marshal data back and forth does make a lot of things faster
20:11
@KevinvanderVelden that's the thing
so any idea how to insert into a table, in middle of select query?
Joe
Joe
cant say that i do
Don't think it's possible
It won't be faster than using a well made sql query, but it'll be written faster than trying to figure out that query.
And it'll be faster than running through apache -> php -> mysql.
It would enormously complicate everything if you were updating in the middle of a read
@KevinvanderVelden well you can actually do that...
Joe
Joe
20:13
@Noctrine /signed
you can update on multiple tables... joined together
and those joined tables can be temporary ones, created on the fly by some other select operator
@Ali.S you mean "update...select"?
yep
That's a select followed by updating the data =p
20:14
i love visual studio 2015
But thinking of how those queries work, actually inserting in the middle of a select - I can't think of a way that'd work.
Pip
Pip
@RhysW it's pretty nice :)
@KevinvanderVelden update T1 join (select T2) on T1.x = T2.x set T1.y = T2.y
The problem with doing "select (update select)" is hell
Heh, this actually just spawned an interesting conversation in my little work area about how a database system can handle this kinda thing.
Joe
Joe
20:15
@Ali.S write a Stored Procedure in your SQL and then call it from your query?
@Ali.S yep, internally that will just be read data, update data
@Joe that's the only solution I could think of
but I was curious if it was possible without it
Joe
Joe
thats as close as I could think of to do this, but your still taking a query language, and writing a program
also it should be stored function, not stored procedure :P
Joe
Joe
but functions by nature are not allowed to make changes? I might be wrong about the difference
20:17
@Joe I don't know... I never used any of those
I just know that you can only call functions in update/insert query
Joe
Joe
UDF ( function) cant do insert or update, where SP (stored proc) can
maybe i have it wrong... now im confused... TO GOOGLE
Joe
Joe
... reminds me... im hungry
@Almo what?
Triggers can bite you in the ass because they happen invisibly
You could have one operating you forgot about giving you weird results and you have no idea why
20:22
@Almo you would hate to hear what we use triggers for
Worse or better than sending emails?
hahah :)
replication
(As in, sending the email from the trigger, not as in creating a record for a thing to email)
@RhysW how does that work? Bidirectional or one way? =p
@KevinvanderVelden yes
in some places one way
in some places both ways
dont ask
its a headache
20:26
Hmm that was probably hell to make
oh it gets better
the mysql version we started with, wasn't millisecond precise
two updates happen within the same second? no idea which came first, data overwriting everywhere, fun fun fun
beaten only by their UTF 7.5
Pip
Pip
wow that sucks
well, we call it utf 7.5, they called it utf8 but if you use it they reserve a bit for themselves, so you dont get full utf8...
they had to implement another utf8 later on that was actually utf8
Joe
Joe
20:29
^ I think this is why im still stuck on latin1
and managing conversion
Bleh, I'm going to bed. Cya people later o/
to prove i didnt just make that up
"Turns out MySQL’s utf8 charset only partially implements proper UTF-8 encoding. It can only store UTF-8-encoded symbols that consist of one to three bytes; encoded symbols that take up four bytes aren’t supported."
and i shit you not, we discovered this because the client complained they could not enter the symbol for the pile of poo: 💩
9
Joe
Joe
first of all... clients right?!
reading more it seems it's not possible... since "subqueries are always select queries"
Joe
Joe
second haha wtf doesnt that mean mysql UTF8 should outright fail hard for any multi byte language like Japanese?
20:32
@Joe it was japanese support that screwed us over, yup
Joe
Joe
damn good catch
"MySQL’s utf8 only allows you to store 5.88% ((0x00FFFF + 1) / (0x10FFFF + 1)) of all possible Unicode code points."
Joe
Joe
I run localization for my product, and Japanese is on my road map
less than 6% of utf8 and they call it utf8!
@Joe there is a proper utf8 that is full utf8 you can use now
Joe
Joe
i see so this was 2012 "utf8" aka "utf7.5"
20:34
@Joe yup
also side note: woo hoo my cube now runs around the screen as i press keys! this evenings goal met
up next: gravity
Joe
Joe
crazy man... youd think with the popularity of mysql and this new litle thing called asia, there might have been a fix a little sooner
Pip
Pip
@RhysW awesome
i know it must seem insignificant to the rest of you, but its a decent step for me :P
Pip
Pip
Nono, that's fantastic
Was my first big step as well
Joe
Joe
@RhysW haha sorry, the first step is the biggest... all down hill from there
20:38
:P i hope its all downhill im working on gravity!
Joe
Joe
well played
...that was bad im sorry
Pip
Pip
lol
@RhysW I just read that post you know about utf8mb4?
@Ali.S yup, its what we moved to in the end, so the client could have their japanese characters and their poo symbols
20:42
also I'm wondering what would happen if you tell mysql that you are using ansi, while actually putting utf8 data inside?
will it break?
i honestly have no idea, it probably wouldnt be happy and you wouldnt be able to read the data back out too well
Pip
Pip
you could probably store it as binary data
Joe
Joe
@Ali.S afaik the characters themselves have the encoding mysql doesnt do any conversion if you put utf8 into latin1 and pull it out you still get utf8
at least in my experience
cant speak to ansi
@Joe which is funny because if you put utf8 into utf8 you dont always get utf8 out... ::P
Joe
Joe
lol thats why i said latin1
20:49
that's what I thought too... the only difference being connection encoding and case-insensitive comparison
Joe
Joe
well thats different if you are programatically encoding
that will definatly mess you up
21:08
"Dislike" coming to Facebook. Zuck has this to say about it: "However he went on to say he did not want it to be a mechanism with which people could 'down vote' others' posts.

Instead, it will be for times when clicking 'like' on 'sad' posts felt insensitive."
Pip
Pip
@Tyyppi_77 oh nice, you got Fanatic a while ago. I fucked up my streak a while ago, up to 31 days again
I got fanatic as well
Pip
Pip
@Almo that's.... probably a bad decision
oh on SO not GD
Pip
Pip
yeah
only like 140 people with it on GD total
21:09
@Pip I don't think it will go well
Pip
Pip
agreed
So. You've used Unreal before, right? I'm looking to try it out
Suggestions on where to get started? (other than the obvious "tutorials" page)
Tips?
the UE4 tutorial videos are quite good
21:26
@Pip @Almo :P i'm not good at programming since I haven't taken it serious enough yet :D
Pip
Pip
lol
I think I spent more time playing league than coding in the summer xD
Pip
Pip
The modeling is definitely something you could make money on though
But the thing is I haven't found my fav language yet :P I think C is going to be it
Pip
Pip
straight up C?
21:27
Or C++ :P
I haven't had time to learn them but I dont like Java/JavaScript/Python/Ruby/C# as much as I think I'll like C++ :D
:O
you take that back!
lol C++?
Pip
Pip
C# is the best. You should know this by now
c# is the best :(
Nah :P reminds me too much of Java :D
21:29
probably the only reason im not homeless :P
Pip
Pip
I like C++ as well, but C# will always be the most baller language
I rather code in JavaScript than in C# or Java
Pip
Pip
@RhysW orly?
pretty much, i have no real formal education after a secondary school level
Pip
Pip
I mean. What happened?
21:30
Lol literally everytime I want to do something in C#/Java/Python I think, I can do this in JavaScript instead :P (more portable, no compile times, runs in a browser, access to html)
@Pip got into a few life rough patches all at once
took a job as an apprentice developer on a whim, never looked back since
lol Pip I wish I could finish making models rn for you guys but school gives so much hw ; - ;
anyways, im off to sleep now! gravity will have to be beaten tomorrow. cya!
Bye RhysW!
cya muffin, oh btw, i think your models are awesome
21:33
thx! :D
lol if only my family thought so too :P
My thinks I'm playing video games when she sees me modeling xD
they might come around. took mine a while to understand i could make a living from computing
:D well I'm 16 still so I have time to improve :D
yup! you'll find plenty of supportive people here im sure
lol never ending support :D
tried moddeling before, yeah i basically got a cube, and a slightly bigger cube and that was the best i did :P
21:35
LOL that was me 3 years ago xD
21:59
just won a dota game... simply because out enigma had both refresher and bkb
