12:36 AM
@Pip yeah you havent been in the chat for awhile

Pip
yeah
OMFG you startled me :P

hahaha what started you? was your volume up

Pip
headphones on, was focused on programming
noise loud and sudden :P
alright
you have time for me to ask you a question @ChristianCareaga?

Yes, Im not busy!

Pip
kk
I have this class
class Clicker(Button):
    clickerImage = ObjectProperty(None)
    global image_dir
    image_path = image_dir + os.sep + "clicker.png"
    image_down_path = image_dir + os.sep + "clickerDown.png"

    privateNum = 0
and I need to call this:
Clock.schedule_interval(self.pull_cookie_num, 1.0 / 10.0
but without the self
and I can't do __init__ either
because that won't let the button call things that it needs to call, in the engine
any ideas?

12:42 AM
hmmmm

Pip
wow....
nvm
I figured out another, simpler way to do it
I have a widget tree, and I can just inherit the number from the parent to the child
instead of having everything push and pull the cookie amount
brb, bathroom break
back

haven't been progemming lately

Pip
why not?
such fun!
much time commitment!

Idk I havent had anything to write

Pip
work on something with me?
idk what, but still
sounds fun

12:54 AM
Me and daniel are going to maybe write an app this summer

Pip
In what programming language? Java?
I wrote mine in Python and Kv language (as you probably figured out)

We are going to use C#

Pip
cool
using Unity, or from scratch?

using Xamarin

Pip
cool

12:56 AM
and maybe Monogame or something

Pip
@hasherr tried Xamarin, I think
this is what it looks like, atm
testtext will be replaced shortly with the cookie number
like this:
that is from the actual game I have open in the background
and now it looks like this (this is the layout it will be in the final form)

Pip
that is the layout
yeah, the image is nice (it is the original game)

1:17 AM
are you going to put it on the marke
t

Pip
eventually
if Ortiel lets me
(he is the one who made the original game, if you didn't know)

omg I found another awesome oneman dev game

@Pip I don't like Xamarin.

Pip
lol

1:28 AM
it's very shiny too! :D oh man.

300 bucks for a single license is absurd.
I was literally offended.

xamarin... 300 bucks

for what?

300 dollars for a single feature: Unlimited app storage
I could make the same app in probably less lines of code with Java for free with unlimited app storage.

Xamarin is 300 bucks?

1:31 AM
Yeah, for an Indie licesnse
You have to pay $300 so that you can write code for a mobile platform which you could normally write for free.

Nevermind about that then
Ridiculous

Pretty dumb.

Maybe we will just write Necro this summer

Were you planning on using Xamarin?

yeah to make an iOS app with C#

1:34 AM
Yeah. Sorry for shattering your dreams :(
On the + side, now you get to use Obj-C! :)

Nah, it's okay better now than later, It was more of an idea

Pip
wait a sec
you can use Python

Pip
Kivy can be compiled to iOS
and Android

does it have all the features

1:35 AM
@ChristianCareaga Or Java.

Pip
the same code can be used on all three major desktop platforms, Android, and iOS
and it's free

Or C++. I think.

@hasherr I don't know either! haha

Pip
the entire thing is free, all donation funded @ChristianCareaga

Interesting

1:35 AM
@ChristianCareaga lol
@Pip Is that what you're doing these days?

Pip
yep
making Android Apps with it

I'm making Android games with Java.

Pip
no iOS because you need a 100 dollar per year developer license
good for you @hasherr

@Pip Also a Mac to do it

Yeah me and dan were gonna split the 100$

Pip
1:36 AM
yeah

yeah there is no windows Ios emulator or whatever

Pip
@hasherr just to compile it

Thanks, bud. Going to deploy my first game this week hopefully

Pip
and I would borrow a friends, or use one of my uncle's
@hasherr nice!
I already deployed a pong thing with a friend

If not next week. I have to wait for the stupid government to send me my debit card D:<

Pip
1:37 AM
:(

@hasherr your little ghost game?

10-14 business days

is it done

Ya, Chris.
Done, not polished
I'll work on that this week

Pip
working on Cookie Clicker and an Aquarium thing, in Python, for Android, right now

1:39 AM
You guys are actually doing stuff haha I feel lazy lol

Pip
lol

I'm not coding right now. Working on research paper.

Pip
goodnight, guys

night! :D

Pip
I will be back in about 10 hours or so, for about an hour
then school :/

1:43 AM
I will wait for you!

Pip
anyhow, goodnight!

I WILL, I WILL! MISS U ;_;

Oh yeah you are on the otherside of the US haha night

Pip goes to bed so early.
It's not even 9 yet.

its 9:50 where he lives

1:48 AM
Nope, 8:50

oh yeah its 3 hours
from west to the east coast
He goes to bed early

He normally goes to bed even earlier
Like ~8

3 hours later…
4:35 AM
hi

4:57 AM
Hello

hey

It's a rather quite evening, the typical rude and crude gang seem to be occupied in the real world!

hahaha
I got to go
bye

I think I've had my fair share of scaleform. It seems the industry is very much on the scaleform bandwagon, or the custom solution. I think it would be interesting to see other big user interface solutions
Ah, alrighty then. Have a good evening.

what ?
what are you talking about ?

5:04 AM
Scaleform is a middleware UI solution that is quite popular, and a royal pain in the butt.
It is without a doubt the most popular commercial product, with the biggest alternative being custom in house development
I think the industry needs some new players in the UI market

I see
In my opinon, developpers should make their own UI adapted to their games, there shouldn't have a standard UI for games, It would be boring

Well scaleform isn't a standard look, it's a toolset that allows for the UI to be authored largely using Adobe Flash. Scaleform then acts as a rendering and functional middle man to the rest of the systems

I see

It reduces the need for engineers to be directly involved in getting UI content into the game
Which is fantastic

a developper like me would use is own solution to avoid un-used ressource like Scaleform can does

5:10 AM
Unfortunately, it also comes with a rather substantial performance overhead, and plenty of other shenanigans
Many companies do roll their own solutions. It is quite the time consuming process to develop entirely new systems though, and the amount of time and money spent doing that is often not ideal.
Therefore middleware solutions are often preferred

it's ok when you need to get things dones quickly, but it's not ok when you need to get things done correctly !

Professional middleware solutions have entire teams dedicated to developing and maintaining them. I would have more confidence in that, than I would a short term in house solution.

time is money, but sometimes more times can bring more money. Do you know what I'm saying ?

That is a possible situation yes

The fact is that in those solution you don't really know their sources. You have to trust them like a blind guy, if a problem occur you will feel how hard it is ! But with house solution you know the shit you write ! :)
I got to go bye

5:24 AM
Oh man. I love the accessibility of Infinity Wars as a TCG
There just isn't a good TCG community where I live
MTG online is alright but its dated =/

Hmm, well thats unfortunate
I'm not a big trading card fan these days. We play Dominion at work a good bit, but thats not a trading game

I live in rural Wisconsin. It's expected unfortunately :(
I own Dominion hoping my wife was going to enjoy it but sadly its not the game for her

I grew up in Iowa, and we had a good community for magic the gathering. That was over 10 years ago though
Duel of Champions is a good online trading card game
and its freemium

I thought about that one a bit
Not playing it myself, since Infinity Wars is also freemium and the first one I settled upon and like a lot, I can say the consensus of what I read is Infinity Wars > Other online TCG offerings
Comparing it to Hearthstone is a bit of an apples vs oranges situation but IW is definitely more my style

I still have yet to try hearthstone

5:30 AM
It was fun for a little while

I just find myself not wanting to sit at a computer much when I get home.

I'm a fan of being able to vary up strategy and kind of come up with my own fun twist on things and Hearthstone definitely lacks the variety / depth that would appeal to that

Spend 10 hours a day on one

5:48 AM
It's more of a separation of work vs play than time spent on vs off the computer
Though obviously its not the case for everyone

4 hours later…
9:41 AM
Morning

hi

ning! :D
game provides more "scary" feedback if you get scared, with help of bio feedback device. This game helps you to overcome fear.

That could be good for my PTSD.
Intriguing.

@Blue In real life, if this dev were a therapist, she will put you in a room that will shrink itself.
and the gameplay experience is supposed to be something like that, I suppose.
I hate insects. If I were in a confined space with insects, I will freak out. Then if someone pours even more insects, I will start to scream.
"Stop! Please! I will do anything you ask, Please. Stop"
"No. You must overcome the fear of insects. I shall purge you of the fear with... more fear"
"Ahhhh!!! NNnnnnnnnnnnnnnno"

Well there's a real therapy that is 80% successful called flood therapy.
I'm actually doing that today funnily enough.
It makes you relive your trauma by describing it to yourself in the present tense.

9:56 AM
oh my... ok, alright. And 80% successful ratio. That's counterintutive but I guess pulling it out is better than burying it deep

You then have to listen to yourself describing the trauma to get used to the idea that it is a memory, not a present happening act.
80% is an incredibly high success ratio.

I guess then reinforcing(attempting to indirectly experience it) fear factor in game to overcome fear can actually work. Now it's really interesting.

Yup.
Same principle, different application
Watch Markiplier's play through, it shows how effective responsive escalation can be.

that guy, I know. He doesn't seem to get really scared at all; he seems to experience fear in more of objective sense.
he has a good voice btw.

10:41 AM
yo

hej

sup

11:03 AM
yo

I am working on web based game. We r a team of 4. As we get frustrated working late I am seeing more f&n words being thrown into comment section.
I never had like, "oily rolling" team. This team, oily rolling, is fun. And this, working along git, very new to me.

I didn't understand a thing
can you rephrase?

my team, we have a good spirit. They are very pleasant to work with. However I am not familiar with this git/github thinging that we r using.
The comment section of github is filled with playful anger and frustration, because we are working late and everyone's tired; 6 am.

at 6AM you're working early

?!
you are right, technically.

11:22 AM
Hello

hello.

I'm wondering, can I occasionally ask advice here about 3D development?

you can ask for advice about 3D development on any chatroom
it's just that on some you may receive an answer while on others you may not

Can I expect to get reasonable answers here? ;)

yeah

11:24 AM
The resources on the internet are... let's put it, not the best
Then I may become a comonner here :o

sounds good

I'l just start very open, does anyone have experience with 3D Shadow Mapping?

btw now is not the most active hour, I think.

note that not all of our experienced engine developers are here

I could imagine, it's similar in other chats

11:27 AM
you may get better results asking in several hours from now

I am just another student wanting to make a 3D game (starting at the beginnings), so I'll be working on both engine and anything else
I'm doing a Software Engineering Bachelor on university and planning to start a Graphics Master in about 1,5 years

sweet man, mind asking u where the college at, like in state or city?

One concrete issue I am having is that I am getting very blocky shadows on a 4096 x 4096 shadow map, which is actually immensely huge
I'm from The Netherlands, studiyng in Eindhoven

Eindhoven. from google, I get many fancy pics of cool buildings. woo ha.

I'm unsure on what part of the scene my light map (depth map with respect to the light), should include and whether there are any rules for that
Where are you from if I may ask?

11:30 AM
rocheste,( right, rochester, my bad) NY :( ... sorta rural. It's quite deserty outside campuse; school in the middle of nowhere.

ah, that's kind of a bummer I guess

was it not rochester?

Nnnno! it had been expired for further edition! calls moderator for help INVISIBLE MAN!

wut

i made a mistake "rocheste," I am missing "r".

Q: Why do I see a lot of games using Unreal engine when there are much better alternatives?

Adam AroldI play games on my computer often and I see a lot of games using the Unreal engine. Can someone explain why do developers choose to use this engine? In my opinion there are much better alternatives. For example games running on the cry engine look way better and the engine itself is more optimized.

You have obviously never played a game based on the unreal engine nor the cry engine. I have played many and I always feel the same. Since you are not familiar with the cry engine I can't accept your answer. — Adam Arold 11 hours ago
lol
it's not enough that his question is offtopic and he doesn't care
he also goes full retard

I guess I need to work on this:
"So, to compute the light projection matrix, take all visible objects, remove those which are too far away, and compute their bounding box; Add the objects which lie between this bounding box and the light, and compute the new bounding box (but this time, aligned along the light direction)."
and wow at that guy

throw negative votes into his face. intentionally not accepting good answer for your ego is sin.

I don't have enough rep to vote down :(

lol it's fine MickLH left a comment it seems
Why do people still try to solve their differences with violence? — MickLH 15 hours ago

I'd VtC it, but Josh was faster. :D

11:42 AM
I'm trying to lead you gently to the idea that it's a matter of opinion, and that there might not always be a rational reason behind a game using one tech. over another except someones emotions. — MickLH 14 hours ago
emotions in development is something like a motif for MickLH's topics of discussion
I don't really know about emotions tbh

Rage. It's mostly pure, unadulterated rage.

but this guy reinforced my opinion that today's society is just too friendly
and allows idiots to survive
anyway, back to coding, this game ain't gonna make itself

@AlexM. game? R u making game? You said you were more interested in doing other things a while ago. Change in mind? What game? Me curious?

well I have to develop games at work lol
I do other stuff at home

What kidn of game? :o
kind*

11:45 AM
for kids
nothing exciting

r u trying to rip off kids money? with those micro-transaction thingings? (or maybe good educational game...)

no comment

but you just commented.

I dropped this one here before but damn this is a good mix
I'm not even sure which one I like best, this or Armin's ASOT 2011
that was also godlike

12:00 PM
@AlexM. Dude I got curious of your workplace so I googled a bit then I found picture of you dancing.

no shit, it's on my public facebook profile

yeah.

I become quite merry when drunk

oh darn, I need to use my brain...
Ned to calculate which objects are visible in the scene

@skiwi There's the perfect solution, and there's the one where you kinda wing it in the rough ballpark, throw it at the graphic card, say "There, you make sense out of this mess" and get at least an order of magnitude more performance. ;)

12:08 PM
sadly I need to calculate it on the CPU, however it should be a cheap calculation
GPU can do the expensive stuff

It's "cheap" when you leave out a lot of possibilities (objects intersecting, transparency, reflection and refraction, vertex shaders, GPU-based skeletal mesh morphing ...), but even so it's a lot of pain where a simpler Z-buffer based solution could lead to roughly the same visual result.

I see, but I'm pretty sure an AABB calculation needs to be done on the CPU side, as my objects on the scene are not stored in the GPU
Perhaps that's something I should revise at a later point

use all the CUDAs
lol or don't I just program gameplay
LOL

12:35 PM
I guess it may be better at some point :)

1:07 PM
So who's excited for Evolve?

I'm quite excited
Though doesn't seem like they offer any graphical/modelling innovation, so that part of me is sad

Q: Is padding brackets objectively the best way to write C programs?

Benvoid Function( int, char ) versus: void Function (int, char) My friend keeps saying otherwise. What is objectively the best way to write brackets?

lol

wow
that question

Guys. Important question.
What is objectively the best food one can get in the world?

pasta and cheese with sweet tomato sauce
anyone disagreeing is an ignorant fool
pasta and cheese is the best food one can get in the world
objectively speaking

1:18 PM
salmon. raw salmon.

lutefisk lol

lololo
lutefisk lolo
I usually give all my lutefisk to gods

I heard lutefisk is horrible
and I first heard about lutefisk in this game

or is it just a god? I don'r remember
yeah it's just a god
I'm not sure if I have actually ever eaten lutefisk. I've just seen it in the shops everywhere

I think this is the best WoW theme among all

1:42 PM

ooh metal cover
in the meantime, star this please:

Q: Ideas for the 2014 Spring GameJam

Alex M.We'll hold the Spring GameJam soon enough (in a month or so, starting today, 3 March 2014). Drop all of your ideas for the new GameJam as answers here. Based on a combination of votes and relevance of comments under each answer, we'll make a list of stuff and then a poll, for everyone to vote to ...

I think the old format is fine, it just needs some advertising

say that in an answer
also suggest ways to advertise
we could remove the need for users to get rep to participate completely

as soon as I come up with some ways to advertise better

1:54 PM
the Lounge gamejam didn't take place on meta stackoverflow
it took place on their own website

that's true too

I could host the jam myself temporarily
I'll add that as an answer

A: Ideas for the 2014 Spring GameJam

Alex M.Right now, in order to participate, users need reputation. This requires new users to build up some rep if they want to participate. Advertising the jam is a great idea to gain new users, but if the rep requirement will immediately throw them off. My suggestion: we host the jam externally. We do...
