Jon
Jon
12:00
i played the leaked doom3 src and builds when it was still in alpha
The graphics were jaw dropping at the time
It also destroyed my high end PC
Jon
Jon
And the source code was scary
scarier than the actual game
funny, I can't remember a truly scary scene in D3
it was still pretty light on horror
Jon
Jon
bathroom scene
must have forgotten it
Jon
Jon
12:05
first encounter with that dog creature thing... eating a body
light flickering.. it looks up at you
oh shiiii
yeah totally forgot most of it
still not scary, I guess it's not my type of horror lol
Jon
Jon
But in all seriousness, the flashlight design decision was ridiculous
let me think of something that I find to be scary
Jon
Jon
Lets make them shoot in the pitch darkness...
Resident Evil 4
Scene where that monster jumps out of the fridge
that's just a zombie shooting game
Jon
Jon
12:08
Nearly shat myself
oh yeah, Dark Seed
I found those two to be scary
and there was this other one
Jon
Jon
In RE4 they usually start mood music when monsters are near.. in this particular scene, near the end of the game, there is just quietness
Then BLAM!
Not expected.
but those are just jumpscares
Jon
Jon
Looking at Dark Seed, never saw that one before
I remember the box art
horror is supposed to also have psychical effects and sort of manipulate your mind
monsters going BOO at you is not horror
Jon
Jon
12:09
the penumbra series then
those were decent yeah :D and amnesia
Jon
Jon
Oh... there is this new horror game I saw teh other day....
Not out yet.
people praised thief 3's cradle mission
Jon
Jon
Looked scary... I can't rmemeber anything about it though...
I dropped thief 3 right before it
Jon
Jon
12:11
Evil Within
check that out
the devil inside had books which explained how each zombie came to existence
basically a history of each
I found those books (with pictures!) to be the scariest parts of the game
Jon
Jon
love game lore.
I don't personally read it.. but I like it.
Evil Within looks REALLY GOOD :)
I wanna kill that butcher guy
still seems like cheap horror to me :D
going to the military base in fallout 1 was scary
damn.
and meeting harry the supermutant in the necropolis
also in fallout 1
fallout 1 had darker and grainier graphics than fallout 2
so it was easier for it to scare you
fallout 2 was like a fucking disney movie in comparison
Jon
Jon
The Last of Us
never played it
but I have to say
the fungi plot thing is my type of horror
mainly because it seems legit :D
Jon
Jon
12:16
Yeah, i haven't played it either
I want to
u see for I... don't have 3 playstation threes
I just saw some melodramatic moments in there that make it look like a B movie
Jon
Jon
My brother just bought a V10 4x4 ford 350
the devil inside had some of the best tracks in there
and it was quite an original game with its reality tv show plot
Jon
Jon
1992 eh?
not really, more like 2000+
Jon
Jon
12:21
oh, yeah sorry i was mistaken for the other title
2000 yeah
you were filmed by a tv show as you entered a haunted house
so the third person perspective was actually the cameraman behind you
Jon
Jon
the music would be better if there were more offkey notes, to make it more eery
There are a couple, but not enough :)
Oh yeah, since you are here, got a question.
it was still a zombie shooter
not that much on the horror side except for the overall atmosphere and... lore
I mentioned I only found the books to be scary :D
Jon
Jon
hehehe
I was also 8 or sth
Jon
Jon
12:23
go in a game, read a book.
Jon
Jon
I don't have enough time to read books inside games anymore lol.
> tfhdrt4 years ago
>
> this song makes me kill som fucking zombies
fuck yeah
the game also had quite a lot of puzzles
it was a Cryo game after all
basically a nice successor to alone in the dark
Jon
Jon
Alone in the dark :D
what's the question?
Jon
Jon
12:25
Not really a question
I had a problem last night, and was wondering if you had some insight maybe
I have a plant -- and i want it to play a crush animation when it is stepped on
The animation is like 14 frames or so... and I only want it to play when something is moving on top of it.. if it is not moving, the animation should pause
CollisonOnStay() seems to be what I should be looking at
that, or set a flag while in OnEnter
and set it again while in OnExit
Jon
Jon
I think the issue might be because my IsMoving is not being set properly.
The animation never stops playing.
It was late too..
I'll have another look at it
alright, let me know how it goes
this track was always playing while reading book
it added to the atmosphere
I just wish the game was more popular
so I could find screenshots of the books to post here
the pics were pretty nice and explicit
Jon
Jon
yeah, google searches bring up the movie
say, here's a horror plot I'd find to be to my liking
something like, a random family in their home
and something causes some sort of psychosis for each member at a time
and they end up murdering each other based on imaginary crap
that would work
I should buy this one
annoyingly, I already had one, but I sold it sometime ago
that was silly
at least it's unpopular so it's cheap to replace
Jon
Jon
12:38
that plot sounds very generic
really?
maybe
I find any monster-involving plots to sound generic
Jon
Jon
better horror plot, you are a mind manipulator gone crazy, you enter people's minds and control them into killing people for you -- the murders that generate the most press gives you the most points
isn't that a thriller more like?
is that even a sentence, what did I write there
Jon
Jon
naw... because the endgame, enter your own mind!!!
yeah make it a mind manipulation virus that goes out of control to make it horror
Jon
Jon
12:40
and end up stuck there for all of eternity
Has Anyone Really Been Far Even as Decided to Use Even Go Want to do Look More Like?
@Jon holy shit :O
plot twist
I still think my insanity-based plot is better :D
perhaps make it so only one member of the family goes insane
Jon
Jon
then the game zooms out and you see yourself in a mental hospital, drooling in a wheelchair
and you can closely see his torment
Jon
Jon
Was it all in your head?
WHICH FINALLY REMINDED ME OF THE GAME I WANTED TO MENTION
sanitarium
it had insane people
Jon
Jon
12:42
yeah. classic :)
asylums
that one was good horror
except for the fucking aztec plot
what the hell was that
de_aztec was great man
this whole level was fucked up
Jon
Jon
I never got that far
I just tried it out at a girlfriend's house
do give it a try or at least watch a walkthrough if you don't have patience for the puzzles
Jon
Jon
12:45
I was a Zac McKracken / Maniac Mansion point and click kinda guy
Why can't the weekend last longer? :(
@ToddersLegrande :(
I once brought a mate to play DMC4 with me
Jon
Jon
spoiler, he doesn't cry.
when he saw that part at the beginning
where nero revs up his sword and proceeds to ride it like a bike
he fucking lost it
LOL
I got too used to japanese weird shit
I didn't even notice that
lol
oh alex you were supposed to hit me bro, wtf, i almost went back to denmark
12:52
was I supposed to hit you if you left or if you stayed?
ive gotta stay away from the toxic female
"toxic female"
i mean, cs is more enjoyable than sex
they have decent music
@MickLH ikr
except now I stop myself from playing cs so I can play other games too
otherwise I keep on buying and never playing
and programming is more enjoyable than conversation with them
12:55
at least computers listen to you
Jon
Jon
i slept with a female programmer once
well, 3 times actually
did you both do Thread.Sleep(SLEEP_TIME)?
or did you overlap each other first?
lol i think he means... "lower level"
oooooh
like usleep(...)
12:58
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH
Asm proc
push rbp ; re-aligns the stack to a 16-byte boundary (CALL pushed 8 bytes for the caller's return address) as well as prepares for setting up a stack frame
sub rsp, 32 ; 32 bytes of shadow space
mov rbp, rsp ; finalizes the stack frame using the current stack pointer
    ; sleep for 1 second
mov ecx, 1000 ; ecx = sleep time
    call Sleep ; call sleep
lea rsp, [rbp+32] ; get rid of shadow space
pop rbp ; clears the stack frame and sets the stack pointer back to the location of the caller's return address
more like this
when you look at this level, the computer sure does a lot of things pretty fast
sometimes I wonder how it can be that people still don't find it to be fast enough
@AlexM. typically because they do to much stuff
or rather they don't use what they already have efficiently enough
after all, if you have $1000 to spend in a night, you don't feel like optimizing your expenses so you only spend $100
Jon
Jon
its about optimization really
I can write a collision detection system that bring a pc to a crawl with only 2 entities on screen
When working with business apps, you rarely see speed issues, because they are not that apparent, and you are not doing as much with your hardware.
Anyways, profiling should be part of your project lifecycle
3
thats why iI get annoyed at nubs who wont just write the code on a whim
If you want your code to not suck, you're gonna have to try all the options while profiling anyways
13:12
@Jon Not true. There are some really poorly written enterprise level business apps out there. I don't understand :(
Though I suppose you did say rarely :P
The only speed issues I've run into in business apps were when the developers though it would be OK to work on the remote DB live over an SQL tunnel
lol if I look at my average message from afar
I'm wondering how and why you guys manage to put up with me
well at least I break all fuck in sentence count records
that's still something
Jon
Jon
Put up with you?
All I have to do is click the little X at the top and you are gone
but but but... that kills everyone :O
Jon
Jon
hehe

Q: How to approach rendering in a 2D Sprite-based game?

user42030Let's assume you have some classes like Player, Enemy, Map and Tile. The first approach would be to let the things draw themself, e.g.: void render(){ player.draw(); enemy.draw(); // etc. } But that doesn't feels right... the next idea would be to make a class Renderer, but then I wo...

"That doesn't feel right"
Jon
Jon
lmao
I'll never get "doesn't feel right" when it comes to solving problems
it either works or it doesn't
there's no "I feel it doesn't work"
Jon
Jon
Good god, whats up with that answer
Pros:

Used by half-life 2 and several other games
wow what a pro
Now each approach is just fine. My current project is almost a hybrid of the two due to special requirements. Now you aren't going to be writing a AAA game, so work with whichever approach you prefer.
Now you aren't going to be writing a AAA game, so work with whichever approach you prefer.
there must be some sort of thing about AAA games
where the preferences of developers are invalidated
I got a sort of hybrid too
13:30
and replaced with rigid intergalactic rules that must be followed
A sprite has render() which renders it on screen, and it also has queueRender() which makes the sprite add itself in the renderer
Jon
Jon
People wanna be like the pros
'It makes him feel violated'
hahaha
Jon
Jon
lol, i had to post that
guys, I need some help from someone better in english than me
here's the thing
Jon
Jon
13:31
you mean gooder in english
what is X called there?
Jon
Jon
eh?
what is it called in french
percentage?
yes but it's the percentage relative to something
is there a term for this
Pikiwedia
Jon
Jon
13:33
relative percentage
return (100f*B)/A;
this is the whole thing
Jon
Jon
lol, bbs break
amount of a of b in percentage
lol idk
the percentage of how many Bs there are in A?
jesus christ how do you properly document this function
how many Bs there are in A wtf
I should ask this on EL&U
there are no "b"s in a "wtf"
13:36
how much b is of a?
@Lasse that makes sense I think
maybe someone good in math and native english speaker should tell us how it is
I'm good in math, I'm a native speaker, and I have never heard a term for this
I just checked wikipedia, and found nothing
guess "Finds the value of X in X% of A is B." works well enough then
it should make enough sense to anyone reading it
Add an example with values, there's no way this will not puzzle someone
13:41
I'd write "how many % b is of a"
or the other way around
what Christoph said
@Christoph right, I should do that
If you can typeset math in your documentation, add the formula as well
    /// <summary>
	/// Finds the value of X in (X% of A is B).
	/// e.g. PercentageOf(4, 2) => 50.
	/// </summary>
this should do the job then
Is this for doxygen?
13:44
no, it's just the intellisense parsed comments
not sure I can do anything fancy like TeX and stuff in it
looks good to me
what Almo said
@AlexM. "The ratio of B to A (in percent)"
Or just "B over A (in percent)"
the ratio thing seems to make the most sense
though for documentation purposes I guess just showing the formula is best
