9:00 PM
I started using chrome just because of G+.
but still IE manages many sites (not google stuff) better than chrome.
when IE9 came out, it just kicked other browsers off. with it's shiny JS processor and use of GPU.

I donno, I use the address bar for everything, and even the Faux Bar plugin for Chrome is better than the default Chrome address bar:

Well, guys, thank a lot(!) for helping me test this. I see there are some issues, but I am glad to see we could play some matches without crashes or other big problems. I'm off, back to coding and bug fixing. see ya

but soon others got better and better, after 3-4 months they passed were IE was.
damn it M$, why it takes so long for you to release an update for your apps?

In Faux Bar though, I have to type 3! Three whole characters before stuff pops up. In FF 2 is enough and "as" gives me what I want
</rant>

:D In IE nothing gives you what you want!
ie's address bar almost shows your browsing history, it doesn't search anything for you

9:06 PM
tbh, I haven't even tried IE for this test, and that's because I'm forced to use IE8 at work, if I'm to use IE at all
nothing beats the Awesome Bar (tm) for typing stuff in to

if I'm not googling then I'm typing in a URL - chrome's default address bar is perfect for this

I don't have the same experience with it. Both of those screenshots were taken moments after each other and they were both working off the same data
yeah, I type partial urls, or history items, or keywords, or bookmarks, you name it

you evidently don't have any urls that start with ast...

And that's because I don't, "ast" is in the title of the page

I don't do it based off keywords is the or bookmarks or anything. just urls
Which is why your experience is different than mine :)
I just use google and urls
so you having a different experience is expected

9:10 PM
yup, and once you're used to it, you can't switch, :(

my mind is good at memorizing urls for some reason

So I guess you use the bookmarks drop-down for all of your common websites then?

I don't have bookmarks XD

Well... that's just it, you don't need to do that. It's just like why memorize a phone number when you know the person's name and have an address book on your phone?

Precisely.
;)
Which is why I like Chrome! Keeps it simple out of the box

9:14 PM
in my metaphor, "phone number" == "web address" and "person's name" == "title of or the page or some other keyword for the page"

I understood

So, you memorize phone numbers?

metaphorically speaking yes
in reality no
I memorize URLs which makes the default chrome address bar suitable for me
I don't memorize phone numbers so I need an address book (hopefully my phone includes one!)

Way back in 2008, we had Alexis Ohanian and Steve Huffman, the founders and co-creators of Reddit, on the Stack Overflow podcast. We chatted about a bunch of stuff, but one of the things they said that always stuck with me was that Reddit always took an explicitly hands-off, no moderation approach to their content from the very beginning.

I found that a bit shocking, since I’ve… never seen that work. Certainly on Stack Overflow and Stack Exchange we are very much pro-moderation — and more so with every passing year. We have literally hundreds of community moderators. We spend  …

I'm not saying those advanced bars are bad they are definitely good for those who use them! Just saying I like Chrome because it does exactly what I want it to

9:17 PM
Kind of hard to say that memorizing the name of someone is so much easier when someone has been memorizing numbers their whole life

1 hour later…
10:31 PM
names have fewer bits of information, thus are easier to remember
assuming it's a common name
if I told you my name was Xjirczixx it wouldn't be any easier to remember than 887429842

10:45 PM
@Tetrad: I'm always so conflicted by this argument. I was a beta user of SO and it was much less "noisy" ... although it was also a lot more "fun"
I'm an SO hipster. it was cool, then it became mainstream.
but then again, the goal is not to be an ivory tower, it's just to make the plebians wipe their feet at the door.

@Jimmy good thing I don't visit web pages in greek very often, otherwise my method of memorizing keywords in the title of the page would be screwed
Oh wait, not quite true, you can bookmark something, then attach english words as tags to it, then type the english words in the address bar to find it, yay!

I can see how that would be convenient
I've kind of gotten used to re-googling everything

It's like, an un-personalized awesomebar
well, I guess now that google is personalizing search, it might result in the same thing eventually

My company phone directory is on the intranet, and I can never remember the address: (obfuscated a little, but) ht-tp://iman/eGuide/server/eGuide
So I bookmarked it and added "phone" as a tag, problem solved
yeah, Google is personalizing more and more, it's pretty cool

I think I'd just type in eGuide and have Chrome suggest the full URL

11:11 PM
opens chrome to see if it would actually work

well it pulls from your history
so if you've been there
it should give you the suggestion

Yup, so as long as you type a part of the address, regardless of where it shows up in the address, you're ok. That's alright

oh, also, it remembers words from the title too
if you remember the title of the page

Well, why didn't it pick up all of the Asteroid Outpost hits when I typed "ast"? It picked up 1 at the bottom of the list, but only after asking if I wanted to search for an Aston Martin

the heuristics are weird I guess
I'm not sure how it decides one page is better than the other
I do notice that history suggestions are kind of mixed in with search keyword suggestions

11:16 PM
chrome auto-search bar thing does weird, annoying stuff sometimes...

Pentadactyl has spoiled me for all other web browsers.

Right on
I can see how that would be useful if you knew and loved Vi

Or, really, for anybody who prefers to use the keyboard over using the mouse.

Sadly, lynx/links2 aren't really viable web browsers any more. The web has gotten too complicated. :(

11:23 PM
Oh, and what is the difference between "vi", and "vim"?

an m

gmail shows up surprisingly readably in links
vi is ancient, vim is better

gmail is also pretty awesome with degrading and stuff

So kinda like the difference between CVS and SVN?

most sites don't have that awesomeness

11:24 PM
Same but better?

'vi' is the original program, which was written for unix. 'vim' is one of many vi-alikes which were written for various different operating systems, often adding new features. Vim was originally for the Amiga, for example.

I'm not a particularly good vim user, so when I use vi, I tend to get stuck in some state that's hard for me to undo. It feels a lot more unpolished.

It's difficult to find 'vi' these days, really. Most systems now use vim, sometimes set into a vi-compatible mode, which disables vim's added features.

my school's solaris cluster didn't have vim. sad times.

(If you're in a state in vim and you don't know how to get out of it, control-c will get you back to normal mode, or abort any lengthy process that vim is doing)

11:28 PM
yeah... Notepad is the same way
>.>

Notepad has lots of lengthy processes! xD

I get into this one mode where all I can do is type characters

I keep trying to teach myself emacs, but it just won't stick. Too many modifier key combinations.

@JohnMcDonald I got stuck in that mode a lot, too. I ended up installing an extension to get rid of the problem

tries to think of what extension could get rid of the problem
Alt+F4 isn't an extension

11:34 PM
replace notepad.exe with notepad++ maybe

(i use notepad++)

yeah, completely honestly, I use jEdit most of the time, not notepad
I find the regular expressions in notepad++ have troubles with new lines
That's a no-no

i usually don't need to do much regex stuff in notepad++

yeah, I don't use regular expressions all the time, but I do use them, and when I do, it's nice to be in an editor that implements them properly
and I've been using square selections more and more often
instant selection highlighting is awesome too (by that I mean that your selection instantly highlights all other instances of what's selected)
anyway, I've got to go
