heh. You really do get that sort of response sometimes (well, absent the Spongebobism), but mostly, it's nearer to surprise. Unfortunately even when it's clear what sort of information is required to get help, many are unable to articulate any clear question beyond "Is my data significant". Prompts like "are you interested in seeing if one group tends to have higher/lower values or are you interested in any kind of difference in distribution" often still don't get a clear answer.
Of course the question always comes after they have collected data, so even if they can articulate a question, if they haven't got a suitable design or a sufficient sample size*, there's not much you can do for them except explain what the experiment died of. . . . . *(so many biology experiments have n=3 per group!)
