Q: What is the name of this technique?

ApprenticeI saw this in two japanese movies (as I remember), and they were not from the same directors. First was Kagemusha, and the other one was Kwaidan. And they both used the same background style. It's kind of a paiting [that gave me an oniric sensation]. I don't know if this a technique that is comm...

Q: Does this device used to create suspense have a name?

GendoIkariSometimes films will create suspense by having the audience along with character not know whether or not another character knows a secret. And if the character does actually know the secret, it would be bad / put the good guy in danger. A good example is the scene in Inglorious Basterds with H...

Q: Can I watch Better Call Saul first without having seen Breaking Bad?

nicolasx18I'm gonna try to be both as quick and precise as possible. Oh and, by the way, please, NO spoilers. Thanks in advance. So, a couple of days ago I decided to start watching Better Call Saul: Netflix suggested me that, and since I wanted to try something new, I gave it a shot. Two days ago I finis...

Q: What is the meaning of the flashback to Joy's time in Holly's house?

Michelle HooverSo in Prisoners, at the part where Joy is in the hospital, and she opens her eyes, they show a flashback of her time in Holly's house. They show this maze book with a note on it "finish all the mazes and you can go home". What does that mean, does it imply anything?

Q: Will I lose something important if I watch "Better Call Saul" before "Breaking Bad"?

nicolasx18edit: I'm very sorry that you closed my previous answer, but I don't think the suggested question is even comparable to mine: definitely, the question is similar and it involves the same two TV series. However, my case is way more specific, and I'd love to hear fresh answers in 2020 from people ...

@M.A.R. Sir I’m very very weak at chemistry, Organic Chemistry seems very tough to me. I tried Morrison and Boyd Organic Chemistry but when it came to solving the reactions I couldn’t do nothing. Please suggest me something

3:11 PM
@KnightadmiresChappo I think McMurry and Solomon & Fryhle are the easiest organic chemistry books to understand. Haven't really carefully read the latter, but the former is pretty nice in how it manages to simplify things. With organic chemistry, you gotta grab a book, sit down, and read from page 1 to finish, boring parts included.
It's like a new language, because you're gonna use multiple signs, each conveying one special meaning
Have you done that with Morrison and Boyd or did you just read the "new" parts?
@KnightadmiresChappo Hah, well, I think the only reasonable answer here is "deal with it".
I'm saying that as someone who's been 17 only recently
Yeah, you go crazy for this stuff, it's so easy to go crazy over this stuff at 17, and self-control is chafing
But, it's only gonna ebb away when you're no longer 17, so.
It's deeper than that, really. We crave for a freedom that's not there, and even if it is, we can't immediately vision the ruin it leaves behind.

Q: Where is this episode of Power Rangers Jungle Fury filmed?

@M.A.R. I’m saying that as someone who’s 17 only recently
How old are you?

3:59 PM
@KnightadmiresChappo 21
Maybe
But with good confidence

@M.A.R. Is there any chance you can tell me the full form of MAR?

It's my initials
I've disclosed my name before in other chats, but I do like an aura of feigned anonymity

Hahahahaha
Okay, just tell me what A stands for. LOL

Amin
As long as advertisers have no idea what they're trying to sell me, I guess names are meaningless

Yes
Is it Amin or Ameen?
I think later have more real pronounciation

4:07 PM
The former usually
Depends on what you pronounce it with

Is it Muhammad Amin R ? :)

Aye

@M.A.R. What does “Fiza” means in your language ?

So some people argue that the way the Persian version of the name is pronounced, it really should be romanized to "Mohammad", but the Arabic versions of . . . well, Arabic words have always been spelled Arabicly
It's really a cover-up for the thinly veiled hostility between us and certain Arabic nations, but maybe the fact that I dunno how to spell my name in English tells us something

Does it mean “nature” ?

4:12 PM
@KnightadmiresChappo Uh, Persian? The closest that comes to mind is the name of a firecracker
@KnightadmiresChappo Nope
فضا is an Arabic word which should mean space, but it might have other meanings in Arabic nations

@M.A.R. No, I’m really serious. It’s a name of somebody

. . . and فضا is not someone's name o.o
Maybe if you know the Arabic spelling, it helps
There are 4 ways of saying "z" and you have complications involving vowels and glottal stops

فضا = Fiza ?
The full name is Fiza Siddiqui

@KnightadmiresChappo Only remotely. The name is probably different, lemme Google
Apparently it's of Urdu origin and it means "breeze"

It means “breeze” ? Someone told me it means something like “nature”

4:18 PM
Shrug this side of the river, no one's name is that

“Shrug this side of the river” what? Didn’t get you?

There's فضه in Arabic meaning "silver" but that's pronounced more like fezah
@KnightadmiresChappo I mean I haven't met anyone in my life named that so I can't say

I don’t know how they pronounce in her language but in class “Fiza” was pronounced as “ F- e - z- ah”

My mother tongue is Azeri Turkish, here, names of Turkish origin are common

Fiza is pronounced in same way as Rita

4:22 PM
There's apparently a Bollywood movie titled Fiza

What’s Bollywood?

Fiza is a 2000 Indian crime thriller film written and directed by Khalid Mohammed. It stars Karisma Kapoor in the title role, along with Hrithik Roshan as her terrorist brother and Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan as their mother. The movie was produced by Pradeep Guha on a budget of ₹55 million and had a theatrical release worldwide on 8 September 2000. Upon release, Fiza received positive reviews, with its storyline and soundtrack, as well as performances earning praise. A box office hit, the film earned ₹247 million worldwide. Fiza was nominated in various categories at Filmfare Awards including Best Actor...
@KnightadmiresChappo Indian cinema
Probably not an accurate label but it's become second nature for me to call it that

@M.A.R. I thought you were Iranian ? You live in India or something?

I'm Iranian

So, the conclusion is you have never met anyone or came across with the word “Fiza” and all that you can tell me is from Google, ha?

4:25 PM
Aye
But I have good Google Fu, so there's that

Is there any chance that your acquaintances can tell you something about “Fiza” ?

My only acquaintance at the moment is my little brother playing games besides me, so

LOL
Please promise me that one day you will tell me the exact meaning of “Fiza”

6:07 PM
Are questions about movie making considered on topic here? Meaning from the point of view of someone actually making a film, not about the production process of existing films. I checked the help centre but wasn't fully sure how to interpret the line about "questions about ... production".
Reason I ask is someone on SFF wants to ask a question about making their own films, and I wonder if we should recommend this site (with the appropriate "check site guidelines first" disclaimers) as well as Worldbuilding.

6:37 PM
@Randal'Thor If you ask like this, then not really. The distinction is precisely between making it yourself and analysing someone else's work.
(Of course that distinction isn't necessarily "precice", though. But usually it's viable to work out the primary viewpoint.)
There's Video Production and Sound Design for much of the other stuff (albeit not all).
You can ask broader general questions how some effect is commonly done for example, without concentrating on a specific film. This might be considered as somewhat in between. But the focus is still on how people already do that, not how you could do it.
Wait, oh my. In any case, Worldbuilding might be more what this guy has in mind anyway.

7:01 PM
@NapoleonWilson Right, that's what I thought from the help centre but wasn't sure. I'd forgotten Video Production when asking in here, but remembered it while writing my meta answer - that might be the best choice. I'm not really sure why people are recommending Worldbuilding - it's a possibility, since the guy is asking on SFF, but to me at least "moviemaking" suggests more the process of making a movie (not necessarily fantasy) than that of inventing an imaginary world to set it in.

Q: What's so baiting in Benoit's words?

ask.fm from russiaIn Knives Out (2019), Linda speaks to Detective Benoit, who came to investigate Linda's father's death: Linda: Yes, I mean, Walt, he's done well with what Dad gave him. Not that it matters. But really, Dad hands him a book twice a year and Walt publishes it. It's just not the same. Benoi...

@Randal'Thor Well, from looking at the question (or the single sentence available from it), it really seems more like he has some cool story ideas rather than being an up and coming movie producer.

Who knows. Anyway it's quite possible the question they're thinking of wouldn't be on-topic for any SE site ;-)

From that single question I wouldn't be terribly sure he uses "moviemaking" with a very precise intent.
(And that's not figuring in other questions even.)

Q: Why is it important for a film adaptation to be true to the original?

Muniza SiddiquiI am writing an essay about why accuracy is important in a film adaptation of a comic book, and I couldn't find a way to explain it without sounding too opinionated. I understand that a movie is not the same thing as a comic book and that they need to lose some detail in the movie, but other than...
