Q: Carl Douglas of 'Kung-Fu FIghting' fame

wcullenCarl Douglas's 1974 song 'Kung-Fu FIghting' has been in so many movies and is a wonderful homage to the chopsocky flicks. But, no matter how much I searched I couldn't find out: Did the Jamaican-born Carl Douglas himself ever study martial arts?

A J
@steelersquirrel but he didn't.

1:39 AM
@AJ Wut? He told me that he did. How do you know that he didn't?

A J
@steelersquirrel check the transcript. If he told Ankit in a secret room, I don't know.

@AJ Maybe they have another super secret place that they can talk that we don't know about... ;)

2:08 AM
WALT!! I FINISHED THE SOPRANOS!!
I don't know how I feel about that last season.
It was really dark and depressing compared to the previous seasons. It didn't have that charm and humor that the previous seasons had. That whole thing with AJ...Ugh.
And, I can't believe that Tony killed Christopher!!! OMG!!!
I was totally not satisfied with the final episode!!! Argh!!
It was a great show, though! OMG! I can't believe how great it was and how emotionally involved with it that I became ;)

2:25 AM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ why? Anything special ?

A J
@steelersquirrel yeah. :P

@steelersquirrel I want to but stuck in stuff , I guess weekend I can get time

A J
@steelersquirrel A summon for Walt. ;)

2:32 AM
@AnkitSharma Ohhhhhh...like, strippers? Exciting!! ;)

I got out and tried to dance on stage kind of thing which only had pipes and was risky and bouncer came after me and then I tried to bring a wild cat with me but then somebody took it away :)

A J
Lol

@steelersquirrel no

@AnkitSharma Okay, what? You tried to bring a wild cat on stage with you? OMG!

That ahole friend told one of the girl that I got a crush on her and I can only listen to her , so she took care of me with other two girls , they didn’t allowed me drink any further :(
@steelersquirrel not on stage , they drag me down the stage so I was down sitting on floor sad and took a wild friendly cat and started playing with her and then other girls reminded its time for me to leave as our flight time is soon and one of them took away cat :)
Some of the stuff I shared on Insta
Not my crazy dance
that cat

2:38 AM
I don't know what is more disturbing...the fact that you got drug off of the stage or the fact that you have wild cats running around a dance club :P

A J
@AnkitSharma That was the main thing to post there. ;P

ANKIT IS A CRAZY MAN!!!
LOL

@steelersquirrel the club had so many entrance that a friendly cat came inside

A J
@steelersquirrel he looks like one in that pic. ;)

THat was not really a stage I guess as we were not allowed to go there

2:40 AM
@AnkitSharma Yeah...there are lots of "friendly pussycats" here hanging out at the strip clubs :P
@AJ Hehehe!

A J
@steelersquirrel haha

And my impression went down in front of this girls I don't even know

The pussycats get even "friendlier" if you tip them well :P

Even the would-be-bride taking care of me
@steelersquirrel now it's taking wrong turn

@AnkitSharma Meh. Don't worry. See...that's how you get attention from us girls. You totally have it all figured out! ;)
@AnkitSharma Wrong turn? Me? Wuuuuuut? I have no idea what you're talking about 0:)

2:42 AM
@steelersquirrel they were all married, only two unmarried and one of them have crush on my friedn who is getting married soon and other one had boyfriedn and now thinks that I like her
My friend got to know this girl during matchmaking by her mom and he though she is way out of her league and he said yes to different girl but this girl said yes
So she came there on same time by coincident for her friend's bachelor and we joined on multiple occasions for clubbing
It was fun
she still likes him and know he is getting married
I don't know how people handle this awkward situation so easily
--------rant end-------
what's up with you @steelersquirrel

@AnkitSharma There are no awkward situations!! ;)

A J
@AnkitSharma unless they had a serious relationship, it's not awkward at all.

@AnkitSharma Nothing much. I'm trying to get a few ToW questions posted. If I don't, I fear that Napoleon would kill me because I have hounded him so much about starting this challenge ;)

@AJ she was getting little intimidated while dancing with him

A J
@steelersquirrel do you know that I told Nap a mean joke? ;)

2:53 AM
@steelersquirrel lol, so how was your sudden plans

A J
@AnkitSharma that was definitely awkward.

7:03 PM
Hi, anyone here?

Guess not. :P

hey @Catija! I didn't know you hang out here too.
I have a somewhat unusual request, maybe you will be able to help too.

I've always got a toe in here, even if I don't participate much.
What's up?

I want to exercise recognizing emotions in others
What I need is to watch records of people experiencing emotions, but preferably such that I can't understand the words they are saying
and also preferably such that they are really experiencing them and not playing them as actors.
I was thinking that maybe reality TV in languages which I don't understand will be good for that.

Do you need to be able to hear their voices or could you mute the screen?

7:10 PM
I prefer to hear them, but not understand.

I'd avoid reality TV. It's occasionally scripted and it's always overacted.
I'd try to find some good documentaries instead.

What I tried until now was to look up lists of popular reality TV titles in Spanish, but it turned out that I might need a special subtype of reality TV.
Yes, the one I tried was called La Rosa de Guadalupa, and it is very obviously scripted.

Mexican TV is extremely over the top and crazily acted.
Especially their soap operas.

I was thinking that maybe some kind of elimination shows might be better, maybe Big Brother style

There'd be a big cultural difference but there are lots of those in Japan.

7:12 PM
something where they film people in preferably not-scripted situations, and then just cut out the most interesting parts to show.
Yes, preferably from a north atlantic culture, not Asian.

That's why I recommend documentaries over reality TV.

I don't know, do people show many emotions on documentaries?

What languages do you consider yourself fluent in? Apparently not Spanish or Portugues?
Absolutely.

I want the opposite - nonfluent.

Depends on the documentary.
@rumtscho I know... but I can't find stuff if I don't know what languages you're fluent in.
I'm guessing that the list you are fluent in is shorter than the one you're not.

7:15 PM
The documentaries I have watched recently were 1) series on the history of Germany, and 2) nature documentaries, e.g. the wildlife at the Rhine. They did have inserts of professors explaining something, but not really emotional.
Very fluent languages: Bulgarian, English, German. Somewhat fluent (so preferably not those, but might consider trying a great match): Italian and Russian.
There was something I watched recently on Netflix, I don't know if I'd call it a documentary or reality TV. It was about girls in a juvenile correction facility.
They filmed how the girls flip out, they had interviews with them where they explained how they can't kick their drug habits, how much they hate somebody from a rival clique, how difficult it was to see their boyfriend gunned down, etc.
The problem is, it doesn't work if I try an audio track in a different language - first there is still a faint trace of the original track on Netflix, and second it is kinda "overacted" and misleads.

Yeah, you need to find documentaries about people, not history or nature.

But something like that "girls in juvenile prison" thing would be very well suited.
I am not sure that I have seen many documentaries about people, maybe only those about historical personalities.
I saw that Netflix has something about a narco cartell boss, but it seemed to be more of a "replayed" format.

This one doesn't (necessarily) fit your needs... the main language is in English but many of the people who are talking are speaking Kurdish: imdb.com/title/tt1334109/?ref_=nv_sr_1

or "re-acted"? I don't know the right word. I think they have scripted scenes of his life and filmed people playing those.

More like a historical re-enactment?

The Kurdish documentary is a partial match.

(Full disclosure, the director of the film hosted my wedding)

The interviews mean that people are telling stories, and remembering their emotions. Which is different from experiencing them in the moment.
It would work I guess, but not perfectly optimal.
@Catija hey, you know some interesting people!

There's a lot of interesting work done by Vice News in Ukraine, talking with the people who live there - who are obviously going through a lot of emotional stuff

Ukrainian is a dialect of Russian, so might be almost too understandable. But maybe I should try.

7:28 PM
@rumtscho That's true... but (as someone who's watched lots of elimination shows)... the cast is often coached to be overly combative or emotional.
... because that's what makes "good TV".

@Catija OK, I suspected that they are not entirely themselves there.

Sometimes, if you watch the after-show stuff (after the end of the season), they claim "that's not me... I'm never like that".

In Skin wars, there were some people who were obviously playing a role. But I thought they were just insincere people who wanted to uphold a certain version of themselves to the camera.
Is that what you had in mind for Vice News?

Yeah, I think something like that.
The news-reel style of their reporting gets you into current events and sometimes you're seeing things hit people in the middle of things.

The first 3.5 minutes of that video weren't very productive. A lot of English, very few scenes of people saying/doing something.
yes, there was somebody having to duck from something falling, but it was over too quickly I guess.
It is kinda too quick - before I can identify who is present in a scene and why he is there, the scene already changes.

7:41 PM
They're not all like that.
Anyway, I don't watch a ton of non-English media... I know that they don't hype-up the drama on shows like The Great British Bake-off, so it's possible that it's less common in some countries, I'm not sure.

Even if you have not watched stuff personally, do you have ideas how to search for that kind of material?
As I said, typing "popular Spanish reality TV titles" didn't work well, are there better, more precise sources?
Or should I be typing "Skandinavian documentaries about people" or something like that?

The problem with "Spanish" is that it includes Mexican... which are probably not the best choice... is there a differentiation in German between Spanish meaning the language and meaning the country?

not really. There is an equivalent to "spanish-language" as a compound adjective, probably doesn't get used that much as compared to just saying "spanish" though.

Hmmm... Maybe try French?
I don't know why... but this sounds awesome.
> (in which duets have to run a recipe with one in the kitchen and the other giving him orders via a headset).

7:57 PM
It looks fun, yes
there are episodes on YouTube, I am starting one
let's see if it also works for the emotion reading part

My mental image would be that the person having to do the cooking would quickly start getting annoyed/frustrated by the person telling them what to do. :P

it seems that the person who is doing the telling is also getting frustrated, maybe because the person on the other side does not report effortless success
The beginning seems to be kinda like a teaser though, I am not yet within the action itself
Hmm, while the recipe goes on, I cannot get my attention off it :)

8:13 PM
hee hee.

Good! The emotion I wanted to start with is anger. But not simple very strong anger, but different sub-emotions of the anger group, including the subtle ones. Like displeased, impatient, etc.
And there is one of the women who is in one of those states more than 50% of the time.

Awesome!

I don't think this is something I would have noticed without the exercise - if I were only watching the show for itself.
But now I do, I catch myself developing an opinion of her.
Not a nice one.
The second wife also has a mild dictator streak while giving instructions. But nowhere as strong as the first.
And the third is nice, having fun.

Q: In movies, how do actors get "hanged" without any danger to them?

BrettFromLAI have seen many movies in which actors stand in a gallows, with with a noose around their neck. The gallows floor drops out, the actor falls several feet, and stops with a jerk. Here is a similar scene from the end of Schindler's List, in which Amon Goeth (Ralph Fiennes) is hanged: ...

@Catija thank you for helping me find that show
it is indeed a very nice one to watch. In addition to working well for my purpose. I recommend it.
When you concentrate on it, it doesn't actually matter that it's in French.
OK, I must say I do know a tiny little bit French. But so little, I mostly don't catch a single word I know.
At least when they are talking to each other. I understand the recipes.

8:53 PM
It's difficult to know English and not recognize some French. :) Glad it was a good one for you!

French punctuation is hella weird

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I'm not exposed to any punctuation in the video.

@rumtscho thank God
It would've ruined your food
French pronunciation is hella weird too
When Macron, or any French for that matter, talks, it feels like they're squishing words

By the way, @rumtscho I found that TV show here: ofrench.com/culture/reality-tv-france
Maybe there will be others that will tickle your fancy?

@Catija thanks, the content of the article looks good.
Did you post some automatically translated version though?
> The first “confinement” game French was born and it is an immediate carton despite the debates surrounding this concept, judged by some people as unhealthy and voyeur without any sociological goal.

9:01 PM
@rumtscho Is it German for you? It's English for me.

It is English for me. Just not correct English.

Oh, yeah, the quality is low but maybe it's by someone who's not fluent?

It certainly reads like a translation from another language. I don't know if somebody non-fluent wrote in French and translated it, or if it was ran through an autotranslator.
Most of the sentences are much better than the one I posted, with only slight weirdness.

9:15 PM
oh, cool, they have a twist at the end of that couple cooking show

Oh?

Each wife gets her eyes bound, and has to taste all three products and give points, without knowing which is her team's

Oh no! HAHAHA That's awesome.

I have 2 more questions to ask...you guys better get with the program up in here ;)
@Memor-X Awwwww. I'm sorry. What is cordial?

Squash (also known as dilute or cordial), in British English, is a non-alcoholic concentrated syrup used in beverage making. It is usually fruit-flavoured, made from fruit juice, water, and sugar or a sugar substitute. Modern squashes may also contain food colouring and additional flavouring. Some traditional squashes contain herbal extracts, most notably elderflower and ginger. == Drinks == Squash is mixed with a certain amount of water or carbonated water before drinking. As a drink mixer, it may be combined with an alcoholic beverage to prepare a cocktail. Citrus fruits (particularly orange...

user45664My deleted question turns purple, and does not disappear -- why? Is there a time lag or voting that must occur?

Purple, heh

@steelersquirrel i suspect it's been thrown out because the fridge was more tidier but that's just as bad because there was cordial in it, there were marks on the side for refill line and it had my name on it

@Memor-X that's how much your colleagues value you

@Memor-X Do you guys have cleaning people that come in and clean your office? Maybe there was somebody new. That happened to me one time and my coffee creamer was thrown out. I don't even know how to explain what happens when I don't have my coffee creamer ;)

@steelersquirrel we do have cleaners but i don't know how stupid they have to be to throw it out when there is drink in it, markings and someone's name on it

@Memor-X You would think...
My coffee creamer had my name on it accompanied in bold writing "PLEASE DON'T THROW OUT" Uhm...yeah ;)

@steelersquirrel urrrg, i just with people weren't so retarded

Yeah. I know it's frustrating. In my case, the cleaning people were new and they didn't speak or read english, so they just decided to throw everything out. lol.
