3:11 PM
mornin

morn

Afternoon.

how goes it?

It goes.
But not quickly enough.

@DrRDizzle ahh

3:26 PM
deep

shallow

So, English people of this site, sup with the elections last week? I don't know your fancy systems.
All I know is Theresa May got boned and not in a good way.

@MattD by English to you mean England/Britian?

@DForck42 Correct.

@MattD Everyone lives in a constituency. Those constituencies are represented by Members of Parliament. People vote for who they want to represent their constituency. The party that ends up with the most MP's being elected controls Parliament.

3:29 PM
And from what I understand that did not happen, correct?

@DrRDizzle sounds very similar to how the house and senate are set up here in the US, just broken up slightly differently

Yes. If you fail to achieve an overall majority, no one party can control parliament, which is called a "hung parliament".
The Tories failed to acheive an overall majority. As such, they ended up looking for other parties to "team up" with in a "coalition government". AFAIK, that failed too.

And by not calling for the vote, May would have had her party as the majority still, right?

Yup.

And the elections to have decided that didn't have to go down for another three years?

3:31 PM
@MattD Yup, self-boned.

Yup. The reason she called the election early was because the Tories only had a small majority, and that would have been difficult to work with. Obviously, she's now in a much worse position.

Right, as far as the whole Brexit thing is concerned.
The way it's been described on the news is she could have just let things ride with her small majority, and negotiated Brexit which has to be done in 2 years, and the next general election wasn't for another 3, so she totally boned herself.
That sound about accurate?

100% accurate.

So what's the concern(s) now that there's a hung parliament with Brexit negotiations about to get serious?

Some suspect that she did this on purpose so she has an excuse to resign so that she doesn't end up being the person held responsible for Brexit, but I think she just messed up.

3:34 PM
@MattD If you have a chance watch John Oliver's show from Sunday. He covers it in detail.

@MattD It just makes the negotiations far more complicated. Rather than having to ensure that most of her Tory MP's are on board with any proposals put forward, she now has to gain support from MP's in other parties too.

Oh, was that his big to do for Sunday's episode?

Yep...good show

Gotcha.

..and he shows Lord Buckethead.

3:35 PM
So can the Prime Minster call for a special election like this pretty much whenever? Just be like, "Fuck it, it's Tuesday, let's have a special election?"

morning @steelersquirrel

@MovieReel Great question! Great answer @Paulie_D :)
@DForck42 Hello!!

@MattD Pretty much...but one assumes that she agreed it with her party leaders. The campaigning pretty much screwed her over. It was not great.

@steelersquirrel how goes it?

3:38 PM
@steelersquirrel Thanks...repcapped all day so it's pure altruism on my part.

@DForck42 Good. Just hanging out over at my parent's on my way to Salem. Nothing much :)

@Paulie_D I think it's wild that your guys' and gals' leaders can just call elections like that.

@steelersquirrel fun
apparently after I left this morning the cat got into the garage and into an air duct... fiancée wasn't having a great morning

Yeah...I have a +1 today. I was confused

Damn, I forgot that Sorkin wrote A Few Good Men. Man I love his stuff.

3:40 PM
I love that movie! One of the best courtroom dramas.
One of the few roles that I love Tom Cruise in

Indeed. And it has awesome military pathos mixed into it.

I have never seen A Few Good Men.

Hmmm.. I think I have an answer for that Jurassic Park question but it's likely to get closed before I can confirm it....plus the map isn't canon.

That mixture is what made JAG a great TV-show (which was surely inspired by that movie anyway).

Q: Why turn back instead of following the tour route?

FlavvyI was re-watching Jurassic Park (1993) recently, trying to follow the characters' paths on a map, and noticed something a bit strange. When the group starts the tour, they get in the electric cars at (1), enter the park at (2), go past the dilophosaurus enclosure at (3), go on to the no-show T-r...

@NapoleonWilson True that... I loved JAG.Even with the weird unresolved cliffhanger when they changed networks

3:46 PM
@MattD Not really, no. She needs the support of other parties to do it.

@Paulie_D I feel like there's a question there that's worth keeping, but they lack enough info the follow what their issue is

@DForck42 I agree but there's nothing canon or definitive to confirm that they took the longer route back...which is the problem. I'm not even sure there is such a map or diagram. I've found at least 3 different semi-offical maps and they are all different - Which would actually be my answer plus I think there's something in the script.

@NapoleonWilson I believe that the person who Cruises character was based on tried to save one of the guys from the death penalty in this horrible crime committed in Connecticut a while back
The Cheshire, Connecticut home invasion murders occurred on July 23, 2007. Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters were raped and murdered, while her husband, Dr. William Petit, was injured during a home invasion in Cheshire, Connecticut. The Hartford Courant referred to the case as "possibly the most widely publicized crime in the state's history". In 2010, Steven Hayes was convicted of the murders and sentenced to death. His accomplice, Joshua Komisarjevsky, was found guilty on October 13, 2011, and sentenced to death on January 27, 2012. In August 2015, the state of Connecticut abolished...

@Paulie_D ahh

Those guys deserved the harshest punishment imo.

3:58 PM
Based on the map provided, my assumptions were: sending them back the way they came put them in a safer area of the park, as the southern half of the island is mostly herbivores, and it's flatter which makes rescue easier. Also puts them closer to the East Dock for evacuation.

@steelersquirrel so life in solitary confinement?

@DForck42 For one of them, yes. Because one of them wanted to die. I believe he committed suicide in jail. I watched a documentary on the case a while ago.
What they did to that family and the torture they put them through is unthinkable. I was so upset after watching it.
Some of the stuff that gets flagged in SE chatrooms simply baffles me.

iirc I once saw someone in the Math chatroom get flagged for referring to cheerleaders as "beautiful"

@Ixrec ...what?

inorite

4:16 PM
Yeah. It's just silly.
Woot! The A Few Good Men post is in HNQ!!
@NapoleonWilson Where are you? I came in to say hi to you and you disappeared :'(
@Ixrec someone flagged "wtf" I could understand if it was spelled out, but that's just silly, imo.
Anyways, I gotta go. Sorry I missed you @NapoleonWilson :'(

4:36 PM
I am back, hopefully nothing is on fire

@AnkitSharma Just my burning passion for board games being fueled this weekend.

that's fair
@steelersquirrel I love that film

Q: Asian thriller movies

Aishah AiniAsian movie about killing people in a play and there's no way out for the actors. Even when they asked for help, all the viewers thought it was not real and just a part of their play. They need to play some kind of killing game in order to get out of the cage on the stage. I remembered they speak...

@steelersquirrel Awww, I'm here. :'(
After you disappeared I just watched American Gods, sorry.

S S
@AnkitSharma Did you see Babumoshai Bandookbaaz teaser?
Nawazuddin siddique is in it

4:55 PM
@NapoleonWilson how has ti been?

Quite nice. I really enjoy it and am looking forward to every episode.

@SS no

The story is a little slow-paced at times and sometimes I'd like to know more how the main storyline with Shadow progresses, rather than seeing a ton of stretched-out flashbacks and side stories, as this newest episode.
But those side-stories are nice nevertheless.

@NapoleonWilson cool. I might watch it once it's fully released and available on amazon to stream (without a subscription)
@NapoleonWilson yeah I heard they added a lot of content to the show to flesh out a lot of things that aren't mentioned in the book

It would just be a pity if there were no more seasons, since I doubt they'd wrap anything up in the single episode that's left. ;-)
But I guess there'll be more since I'm sure people like it.

4:59 PM
@NapoleonWilson how far have they gotten?

7/8, it seems.

@NapoleonWilson have they done the tree scene yet?

Oh, so I gather you know the book?

@NapoleonWilson I read it not too long ago

I don't know the book story. But Odin and Shadow met up with Vulcan last episode, with interesting developments. And the dead wife is traveling with the Leprechaun in an ice cream truck to...wherever. ;-)

5:02 PM
to see what all the hype was about
@NapoleonWilson I don't recall Vulcan being in the book
what's the character's name?

Uh...the guy leading the weapon factory in the super gun-crazy town.
The actual god goes under various names anyway. Isn't Vulcan just the Roman version of Hephaistos?
Oh, Wikipedia says:
> a new character created by Green and Fuller, though inspired by an initial concept of Gaiman's, specifically for the series and described as having "bound himself to guns".
So...new stuff, I guess.

@NapoleonWilson That was my interpretation.

But how can you do Americana without guns anyway? ;-)

A J
5:27 PM
@NapoleonWilson What is Americana?

@NapoleonWilson ahh, explains why I don't know it
@AJ things about america

@AJ American culture-like thingies.
I'm sure it has a better actual definition, but I'd define it as artifacts, imagery and cultural considerations evoking an inherently "American" feeling. The mixture of which with all other kinds of older traditions (which modern American culture itself could be regarded as being partly made of) is a large part of what American Gods derives its fascination from, I think.

@NapoleonWilson looks like they got a good actor for him

To define it in the most "down-to-earth" way, it's the stuff and feelings that come to your mind when you close your eyes and just think "America". If that definition bears any scientific accuracy I don't know, though. ;-)

@NapoleonWilson scanning though the Wikipedia listing of episodes, it doesn't look like they're that far into the book
it doesn't look like Shadow has even taken up residence at that one place yet

5:39 PM
@DForck42 It doesn't feel that way either, seeing how nothing too signifcant has really happened yet. (Which isn't necessarily meant in a negative way.)

@NapoleonWilson well the book is kinda slow and plodding

S S
@AnkitSharma It is #4 on trending on youtube

S S
But I didn't like the trailer TBH

seen it , not interested

Q: In the film Wonder Woman (2017), how did they sail from Themyscira to London in one night while sleeping?

BigDataLouisOne would have thought it would take longer to sail that far and also it seemed unreasonably lucky that the boat went in the right direction while they were sleeping. (But I'm not a sailor).

This is muthaeffin' super news, like bigtime:

A: Can we increase the maximum tag length?

Shog9This can be increased, but only up to a maximum of 35 characters. This means zen-and-the-art-of-motorcycle-maintenance is right out. I increased the allowed length to 32, thus allowing zen-and-art-of-motorcycle-maint, which should be a little bit easier to recognize. This sort of compromise is ...

Go tell your friends!

@NapoleonWilson cool, but we really need a tag system overhaul
which all of the devs at SO are too afraid to tackle
but oh no, we need a documentation system that is terrible...

Q: Does the fog obscuring Themyscira do anything except hide the island?

stancialIn Wonder Woman (2017), the Amazonian island of Themyscira is obscured from the world by a mystical fog. After being hidden away for apparently thousands of years, this fog is penetrated first by Steve Trevor's crashing plane, then by multiple German boats. It would seem unlikely that this coul...

Q: Stop motion possible claymation film from last 1980s early 1990s Moon Sun Hill snail? Fable

EmilyDoes anyone remember the name of a short film or maybe it was a tv program from the early 1990s or late 1980s , I think it was a program depicting fables, I used to watch it on a video tape, in the UK although it may not have been British. Basically all I can remember is a sun setting over a sma...

Q: Who wrote the Electra Woman and Dyna Girl theme song?

T.E.D.From my childhood I remember Electra Woman and Dyna Girl in part for being one of the few live-action superhero shows available, but primarily for the awesome theme song. I remember it actually changing time in the middle, which is not something you hear a lot from throwaway TV show theme songs. ...

Q: Does the telephone pole in the new Twin Peaks appear in the Fire Walk With Me movie?

Keshav SrinivasanIn last night's episode of the Showtime revival of Twin Peaks, i.e. episode 6, Richard Horne (presumably related to Benjamine Horne) runs over and kills a little boy with his truck. Carl Rodd, an old trailer park owner who first appeared in the movie Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, witnesses this...

Q: Why does Mike call Jimmy "Saul"?

John BellIn Breaking Bad, Mike clearly calls Jimmy by his alternate name "Saul" multiple times. In Better Call Saul we see that their paths are crossed quite considerably before Jimmy even starts using his alter ego of Saul Goodman. Why does Mike entertain this alter ego name? He doesn't seem the type of...

9:40 PM
Wut?! How come I never realized the weapons dealer henchman guy from Ghost Protocol is pretty much the same guy who worked for Max in the first movie. And they even got the bag over the head. So was this just some little reference or an actual story relation? I don't think Max would be all too happy to see Ethan after what he did.

@NapoleonWilson dunno what you're talking about

Fixed.

> Dumb luck?
> Was it? I mean, look, we were unprepared, in the dark, disavowed. The only thing that functioned properly on that mission, was this team. I don't know how we ended up together, but I'm glad we did.

Q: Car racing cartoon

TON TAKUI had once watched this car racing animated tv show and I can't remember it. The cars were kind of like the tamiya car designs and there was different functions on the cars too. The cartoon was was where these kids(I think) race with like these toy cars. Also the main characters car had wings whi...
