@AnkitSharma I'm afraid I'm still fighting the injunction that the LeVar Burton estate filed against it. Those people mean business. :(

HAHAHA!! I'm afraid that I'm probably the only one who knows what that is...maybe Catija ;)
When is another close vote going to be put on that Homo Erectus thing? It's driving me crazy. Napoleon and Ankit have ditched us. This is crazy! ;)

Q: Cinema-only scene in Star Wars VII?

黄雨伞I believe to clearly remember an impressive shot from Star Wars: The Force Awakens of stormtroopers emerging from landing ships on Takodana, while already firing at Maz Kanata's castle. I did not find this scene when I watched the movie on DVD. Does anyone else remember it? Could it be that this ...

Q: Why did Galen Erso abandon the Empire?

stevvveEarly in Rogue One, we learn that Galen Erso at one time worked as a scientist for the Empire. Based on this previous experience, Krennic intended to manipulate Erso into rejoining the Empire to work on the Death Star. What lead to Galen Erso to leave the Empire?

5:51 AM
Wow star wars question already started
@steelersquirrel awwwwwwwwwww
@steelersquirrel I am jealous
@MAFIA36790 I had 2 from long long time, but now left 1

> Men are like steel. When they lose their temper, they lose their worth.

user116211
@AnkitSharma yeh; I'm ignoring the tag in order to avoid sopiler.

A J
Nice quote @NapoleonWilson. That's why I don't lose temper and play games such as counter strike, halo etc to control my temper.

user116211
uff, the classic games of engineers ;P

A J
@MAFIA36790 I was going to add the tag, but found it already has been created.
@MAFIA36790 I have more games, but my laptop does not allow to install more.

user116211
Although my last venture was Assassins Creed 3; after that I got too busy to involve any more in games.

6:51 AM
@AJ why O.o
@AJ we can all read that already :P

A J
I just play these games for one or two hours
@AnkitSharma I no longer require it so ..
@AnkitSharma It was just a conversation starter. ;P nothing else.

@AJ I bring that here :p

A J
@AnkitSharma Alright, I didn't know so edit it.

nevermind
not a big deal

yep

user116211
@AJ Hmm; I do want to have an Alienware; my normal laptop is not suitable for the gaming experience.

A J
That's why I now only have counter strike. I install and remove other games whenever I want to play.

@MAFIA36790 Sound all fine to me

@MAFIA36790 86/2 looking good.
I never asked more than one question in a single day.

user116211
7:05 AM
I've asked two questions in a single day.

A J
@AnkitSharma did it many times.

@AJ I think I have asked 3 in single day
@AJ but all reasonable

A J
@AnkitSharma Yes I know.
Perhaps that's why you didn't earn 2nd Socratic badge yet.

user116211
Hmm; I have only got the badge for a single time.

A J
You need to ask them on separate days
@MAFIA36790 On physics?

@AnkitSharma I now require 60 more.
But that's too far.

user116211
@AnkitSharma More resignations?

user116211
cde asked 100 questions now.

@MAFIA36790 on hold resignation got accepted and got soem clumsy hadoop work

7:49 AM
and hadoop is not as flexible as mysql, so will have to work around with combination of hadoop and mysql

user116211
@AnkitSharma hmm

And I am not even in mood to do this work

user116211
@AnkitSharma Although, I couldn't understand any of these, all the best still.

I want to learn hadoop but time constraint is thin
@AJ I don't know how to track second one

Q: Dialog in Kapoor & Sons

Hmm, what flag should i use for this post?

@MAFIA36790 Blatantly off-topic.

user116211
okay.

user116211
Initially, I also thought of Google Translate; but indeed it gives weird result.

user116211
Last time, I used it to translate a Russian paper; although it could translate, it was near to unreadable.

user116211
8:47 AM
The problem with Google Translate is that it cannot keep track of the correct arrangement of the sentence in the other language.

A J
@MAFIA36790 I once translated Oh shit man.. It translated it as Are gande aadmi.

@AJ you wanted Tatti aadmi?

A J
9:03 AM
@AnkitSharma I think I told you this before, but not Mafia.

maybe

A J
@AnkitSharma I was finding what does it give. :D

@MAFIA36790 problem is more due to non literal meanings
sometime word's meaning get changed depended on the sentence

@MAFIA36790 Here is the great one.
Whilst Ali & Jonny sounds like an appalling US sitcom I'm hoping they will produce many smiles for us England fans and scowls a plenty for the Indians... 260-3 at stumps will be fantastic.

Hey Dizzle!

@AJ I'm annoyed.
I bought tickets to see Rogue One: A Star Wars Story last night, but I ended up being too ill to go.
:(

Ah, that's sad. :(
How is your health now?

9:23 AM
I'm fine now, thanks. It was just a migraine.

user116211
So, can you go for the show in time?

A J
@DrRDizzle Tickets? Were you going with your gf?

user116211
Did you buy tickets again?

@MAFIA36790 The showing was last night. I'll probably have to wait until the weekend, or maybe even Wednesday, before I can see it now. Which sucks.
@AJ No, with my friend.

user116211
ohh

user116211
9:26 AM
@DrRDizzle Questions are already coming; so I'm going to ignore the tag for now.

user116211
DVK has also said he would watch the movie.

@MAFIA36790 Ditto. I really don't want it to be spoiled for me.

A J
@DrRDizzle Would it require to watch all previous star wars movies?

@AJ I'd be very surprised. AFAIK, Disney are doing everything they can to pretend that the prequels never even existed. There is a reason that Star Wars: The Force Awakens owes so much to Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, after all.

A J
So I don't have to watch all of them?

9:30 AM
@AJ I don't think so. I'd guess that at least some knowledge of the Star Wars franchise would be useful though.
(This is all guesswork though)

A J
ok

user116211

user116211

10:09 AM
@AJ where?. Flag them and they will be handled if really needed

Anyone here who often reads reviews?
I'm considering adding a rating of some kind to my reviews (probably a 5-star system) - any thoughts on that?

A J
@DrRDizzle Yeah we'd love that option.

@AJ Is this a reply to my "star rating" comment, or Ankit's comment about flags?
I see.

A J
@DrRDizzle Anyway, that's a nice idea to add the star rating system. Many blogs have rating systems.

@DrRDizzle I prefer 1 to 10

10:27 AM
@AnkitSharma I was going to use Netflix's rating system. 5 stars is "Loved it", 4 stars is "Really liked it", 3 stars is "Liked It", "2 stars is "Disliked it" and 1 star is "Hated it". 0 stars would be reserved for the worst movies imaginable.
Actually, maybe 4 stars would do.
4 = great, 3 = good, 2 = ok, 1 = bad, 0 = terrible

A J
@DrRDizzle So, the rating system is for movies, not for your reviews.

Although I wonder if that would result in me giving far too many movies 4 stars?
@AJ I don't understand what you mean. It's a rating system my reviews will use to conclude the review by giving the movie in question a rating of some kind.

A J
@DrRDizzle Actually at first, I thought this rating system will be for the review you wrote. In simple words, how good or bad your review is.

@AJ Haha, what? So people would be able to review my reviews?

A J
LOL. That's what I thought. English is a confusing language.

10:40 AM
Sorry lol
No, I think that would be a really bad idea. All it would mean is that anything I write that is either a) showing a strong opinion of b) even mildly controversial would get bad ratings.

@DrRDizzle I can never go by that rule as I have way many film I really adore but can't give them full star so I go by IMDb rating and give them 9/10
So I need more variations

A J
@DrRDizzle No, that's a good idea. A movie you thought is bad might be good from the perspective of others. That might make you realize what's a good movie. ;P :D

@AnkitSharma Why can't you give films you love a maximum rating?
@AJ ¬_¬
:P

10 is for perfect film
9 amazing film but not perfect
8 very good
7 good
6 enjoyable

etc etc

10:59 AM
So there isn't a single film that you'd give 10/10?
If it's an unreachable goal, why have it?

A J
@DrRDizzle Did you gave 10/10 ratings to any movie?

@AJ I've never given out ratings before, so no. But if I had, there are a number of films even just this year that I'd give a perfect score too.
For example: The Hateful Eight, Creed and Green Room.
Of course, none of those things are perfect movies - no such thing exists - but they're films that are as good as they can possibly be. Hence, maximum score.

@DrRDizzle I have gave it to few films
But my most common one on IMDb are 7 and 8
9 and 10 are for very few films
@DrRDizzle I think I have 10-15 films in that list
5 bearable
4 hardly bearable
3 very bad
2 made me puke
1 make me kill my self
@DrRDizzle But If I have to rate Alaadin I will give it 8
My 10 are Gang of Wassupur and memento , rest I will check and tell u later
@DrRDizzle ^^^
Green Room will be 7

11:19 AM
@AnkitSharma 7?!?!?!
Just "good"?!?!

7 means good but it had issues for me
7 is a good thing in my books

I don't think we've actually discussed the film in any real detail - what issues did you find with it?

same slasher film cliquey moments
I said I loved it and even recommend it to others but 8 or above rating means I want to watch it again and again which is not true with green room

Fair enough.
@AnkitSharma When you say cliquey, I presume you mean cliched?

@DrRDizzle Same here. Sorry. Mostly because of the villains, I didn't really get them.
@DrRDizzle I actually struggle even with 1-10 and often want to give something half a point more. So if it were me, I'd go with 1-20 half-stars. :O

11:27 AM
@DrRDizzle ooops sorry

@AnkitSharma Wow, you're strict. I think I gave 10\10 to about 150 titles on IMDb (out of about 2,500)

@Walt holy moly
@Walt my 10 is too strict, will check and share the stats later

@AnkitSharma My 10s roughly fall into 2 groups: Masterpieces (in various genres) or great films that I really connected with. Or both, of course. :)

@Walt But we hardly have same opinion on films ;)
But I even change my ratings sometimes after seeing it again

@AnkitSharma Tell me about it. :P Most of my 10\10 are probably from the 30s-80s.

11:35 AM
@Walt What didn't you get about them?

@AnkitSharma Me too. Sometimes significantly; I initially gave Shallow Grave 10\10 but after rewatching it, it dropped to 7. I realized the protagonists were just jerks.

@Walt That's way too... precise. There is no way that there is anyway a meaningful difference between 7.5 and 8.

@DrRDizzle I think we went over it at some point
@DrRDizzle There is to me, for some reason

You're talking about a difference in quality (already something nigh impossible to quantify) of less than 5%.
At least with a 4-5 star scale, the quality difference is as broad as 25-20% per star.

@DrRDizzle In a nut shell, they weren't explained very well and their motives, methods and overall attitude weren't very convicing

11:38 AM
@Walt Yeah, I found your old comment on it.

@DrRDizzle It's because it's hard to quantify that I struggle to give such definitive scores. But that's just me

@Walt Out of curiosity, have you seen Blue Ruin, the director's previous film?
@Walt But... the more precise a score, the more definitive it is, no?

@DrRDizzle No. Heard from someone that it's... problematic

@Walt then they will be in my not rated list

@AnkitSharma <shakes head>

11:41 AM
@Walt That's an interesting take to say the least. Did they expand on that?

@DrRDizzle to me 1 to 10 is enough for 1 to 5 I will go with point values too

@DrRDizzle I dunno, sorry. I barely remembered that. ;)
@DrRDizzle That's crazy talk. Your logic's as warped as a Dali painting

Huh. Well, I'd recommend watching Blue Ruin to anyone. It's a less conventional film than Green Room in a lot of ways, as much a commentary on the cycle of violence that revenge can form as it is a revenge movie.

@AnkitSharma Would you be willing to watch my 10s from the 90's onwards?

@Walt But like... 3 stars out of 5 is the same as 6 stars out of 10, yeah? But when the stars either side are equivalent to 4 out of 10 and 8 out of 10, that means that 3 stars effectively covers the range from 5 - 7 out of 10, if you follow. So it's much less definitive.

11:45 AM
@DrRDizzle It's still a range. I want to be more precise.

@Walt But a range is much less definitive than a precise score.

@DrRDizzle Exactly. Wait, are we still talking about the same thing?

@Walt I have no idea. I'm saying that a definitive score is much less useful when it comes to the qualitative (not quantitative) nature of something as subjective at times as criticism.

@Walt I don't mind that, I love trying new stuff

@DrRDizzle Well, that's where we differ. But it's an interesting take.

11:50 AM
Anyway, has anyone seen anything worth talking about recently? I saw The Birth of a Nation on Tuesday, but that doesn't really qualify.

@AnkitSharma OK, what sort of tone are you after? Broody? Moody? Gloomy? I got it all

@Walt "What kind of colour do you want? Red, scarlet, rose, ruby? I've got it all!"

@DrRDizzle Haven't seen a new movie in weeks. :(

@Walt It doesn't have to be a new movie to be worth talking about ;P

@DrRDizzle Three Colors: Red is one of them, actually. And it's kinda broody. And from 1994.

11:54 AM
@Walt Are they the French movies that Edgar Wright took inspiration from for his Cornetto trilogy?

@Walt ace of all trades

@DrRDizzle Mmm IMDb says I saw [Breathe](www.imdb.com/title/tt3365778) not long ago. And it was nice up until the ending, which kinda ruined the whole thing.

@Walt Good films with terrible endings annoy me so much, because the terrible ending usually ends up being the only thing that sticks with you.

@DrRDizzle Very few blue-blooded robots and darts to the head there, though

@Walt Haha.

11:58 AM
The Midnight Meat Train ending ruined it for me

I may well end up rewatching the entire Cornetto trilogy over the Christmas period in order to try to figure out which one I like the most once and for all.

New Fantastic 4 second half just destroyed it for me

@DrRDizzle I'd rate it Red>Blue>White. Can't decide between the 3 Cornettos, though, I like them all the same.

@AnkitSharma 10 Cloverfield Lane did it for me. Seriously one of the best films of the year, right up until it jumps the shark entirely with its last few minutes.

@DrRDizzle I tried and kept changing my mind

12:00 PM
@Walt Same, I go back and forth all the time. It may well by the trilogy that defies quantification.
Confusingly, I think The World's End may well be the best one, but also my least favourite. Make sense of that.

@DrRDizzle Babadook was kinda the opposite. Didn't really connect until the last minute or so
@DrRDizzle I kinda know what you mean

@Walt I still need to see that, but I've heard it is really good.

@DrRDizzle It's very intense, but good
@DrRDizzle Hot Fuzz was initially my fave, FWIW

@Walt FWIW?

12:06 PM
Ah.
Shaun of the Dead was my favourite, but then again, it was the first one I saw.

...And now it's gonna be stuck in my head. Stupid Cardigans! :(
@AnkitSharma Have you seen Goodfellas, at least?

@Walt nopes

@AnkitSharma <OK, breathe, relax, he's young, it's not his fault>
@AnkitSharma OK, start there.

Goodfellas is great!
One of Scorsese's best movies, and being as he's one of the best living directors...

12:16 PM
1990 ,
8.7/10 - IMDb
96% - Rotten Tomatoes
89% - metacritics
I can try that

Is it really news that people liked Goodfellas? It's widely regarded as one of the best films ever made.

I have seen very few Martin Scorsese films as most of the hyped one are older

He's my favourite director, and the reason I like films as much as I do.

I like Shutter Island and hugo from him

Hog?

12:21 PM
but only seen this two

@AnkitSharma Sure. Er, it's was unofficially Batman 1.5, a sidequel to Burton's Batman. <darting eyes>

Do you mean Hugo?

If I am not worng then hugo was my 9/10
and Shutter Island 8/10 or maybe 9 not remember

@AnkitSharma Hugo was cute. Didn't really like Shutter Island, everything about it was so very familiar

Hugo was nice (damn, I'm turning into @NapoleonWilson), but it pales in comparison (both in quality and in style) to much of the rest of his filmography. Then again, only Scorsese could trick general audiences into watching a biopic about a turn of the century pioneer of film.

12:24 PM
@DrRDizzle Yeah, I mostly liked it because I love Melies

@Walt I have to confess to have never actually seeing one of his movies.

And it was obvious that so does Scorsese
@DrRDizzle Look'em up, they're probably all on Youtube. They're gems

@Walt I plan on it. There are a number of hugely influential films from hugely influential directors that I've been meaning to hunt down for some time now. I'm hoping that a subscription to the BFI might help me there.

Q: What is the significance of tomato?

user44457In The beginning of "We Need To Talk About Kevin", people celebrating tomato festival. In Middle of the movie, we can see Eva standing before tomato sauce cans. What is the significance of tomato ?

@DrRDizzle You might be a better client than Ankit, then. OK, what are you after?
@DrRDizzle I'd start with the 42-reel version of Greed. I think I have it lying around somewhere

12:32 PM
@Walt Obviously Melies but also Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Akira Kurosawa, Alfred Hitchcock.
In fact, anything that could be considered "important" in the history of cinema really.

@DrRDizzle You've come to the right place

I've seen a lot of films, but almost all of them (the vast majority, at least) have been released in the last decade. That's... kind of unacceptable for a would-be critic.

Chaplin's best IMO: Gold Rush, Modern Times, City Lights, Great Dictator. Probably in that order. Though everything he directed is great, except maybe for the last 2 (King in New York & Countess from Hong Kong)
@DrRDizzle As for Keaton, The General is probably one of the greates comedies of all time. Sherlock Jr. is also great, as is Our Hospitality IIRC, and also look for Cops which features some amazing stunts
Actually, why look for it, here it is:

@Walt The General is the only film of his I've actually seen.

@DrRDizzle Great. If you had to see one, that's the one I'd recommend

12:41 PM
to em hugo was amazing
shutter island was good but too similar top previous work so my rating to it is in blur line

A J
@Walt I've seen City Lights, Modern Times, and Circus. Love all of them.

@AJ Nice. Just about every moment in Modern Times is genius. And the last line in City Lights is one of the few moments in cinema where I might admit I had something in my eye that made it momentarily itch or something
Kurasawa: Sheesh, too many. My faves are probably 7 Samurai & Rashomon, but there's also Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Ran...
Same with Hitchcock

A J
Have you seen Circus?

@AJ Me? Sure :)

A J
Love that horse scene.

12:54 PM
...Tried to come up with Hitchcock recommendations, but it's probably more than 20. Just watch his more famous works

A J
@Walt Have you just suggested someone some movies as I can see stars on the list of movies?

@AJ I love how they say he's funny without even knowing it. That's just comedy in a nut shell: Don't try to be funny, just be funny
@AJ Yeah, to Dizzle. Tried to, anyway
@DrRDizzle Though at the very least watch Rear Window, Vertigo & The Birds
2

OK, thanks.
Out of curiosity, how have you managed to watch all these films? YouTube, or have you bought them, or what?

@DrRDizzle I've been watching them since I was born :/ I own a lot of them, sure
@DrRDizzle How are you with Altman? You like?
Or is that too recent

1:12 PM
@AJ It's not from me, though.
@MAFIA36790 I haven't even finished that yet. But it was really nice.

@AJ The amount of inventive and memorable scenes in Modern Times & Gold Rush almost makes me angry. Some comedies don't even have 1, and they have like a dozen each. The guy could've been even richer if he just spread his talent a bit thinner
@DrRDizzle [Oh, except A Woman of Paris, too. I don't really remeber that one.]
@AnkitSharma Did you see The Untouchables, at least? C'mon, give me something
Anyway, look for that one too. You might also like Midnight Run from my late 80s 10\10.
@DrRDizzle Oh, and also watch Kagemusha, definitely. OK, I'm done spouting old titles. :P

A J
1:30 PM
@NapoleonWilson Yeah, Ankit told me.
@Walt oh

@Walt Altman? I don't follow.
I have seen 0 Altman films.

1:44 PM
@NapoleonWilson Connor is still a disappointing character for me.

user116211
The War at the Bunker Hills was quite fascinating, if I remember.

A J
@DrRDizzle How come you get time to watch all these movies? I even couldn't finish those you and Ankit suggested.

user116211
Charles Lee is okay.

A J
Moeen was on fire today.

@AJ I don't have the time, I make the time. Films are a hobby for me.

1:48 PM
I would like to play Black Flag; planned for future.

@MAFIA36790 Ditto.

A J
@DrRDizzle That's almost 30-40 movies Walt suggested. How much you will take to watch all these stuff?

@AJ It will take me a long ass time. It's not like I'll watch them all tonight lol.
But I tend to watch at least a couple of movies a week, usually more. If I just slip one of those in every so often, I'll be done in no time!

A J
alright
Hello @DForck42

Q: What is the significance of tomato?

user44457In the beginning of "We Need To Talk About Kevin", people are celebrating a tomato festival. In the middle of the movie, we can see Eva standing in front of tomato sauce cans. What is the significance of tomatoes?

A J
@DForck42 Didn't watch that movie and Google search doesn't yield any proper result.
I went one year back yesterday.
I'll continue my search from there.

@AJ :-D

@AJ You can try my old question on the witch of 1920, if you have watched it.

@AJ Clue: The tomato cans that Tilda Swinton's character is standing in front of there are reminscent of Andy Warhol's "Cambell Soup Cans"
Warhol's work here was intended to be "without personality or individual expression".
Which I believe Kevin says of himself at some point in the film.
"What personality?"

A J
It seems you know it very well, then you should answer it.

I haven't seen the movie though. I could be talking total nonsense.

@DrRDizzle I think it's an excellent comment at the very least

Maybe. But I'd rather leave it up for someone who has actually seen the movie to add to that.
But the gist of the shot in question is that Tilda Swinton's character is haunted by her sons actions and intimidated by her son himself, which is represented by her being dwarfed and surrounded by Andy Warhol's "Cambell Soup Cans", itself representing her sons lack of personality.
I need to watch this film, sounds interesting.

How do you search unanswered questions sorted by date?

user116211
@AJ it opens by default; newest unanswered

A J
I need a tag in it as well.
Never mind. I figured it out.
thanks.

A J
Hmm, I have to wait for new questions.

2:42 PM
how does one hide specific tags again?

Q: Alan Tudyk in Frozen and Zootopia

steenberghBrowsing through Alan Tudyk's IMDB page, I noticed he voiced a character in Frozen: The Duke of Weselton. Slightly higher on the list is his vocal appearance in zootopuia, as Duke Weaselton. I'm guessing this is not a coincidence. Is there an official source that confirms the naming of his Zooto...

user116211
There is a option to hide questions on the concerned ignored tags; tick that.

@MAFIA36790 thank you, found it

user116211
@DForck42 :)
